Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #3 states "Never spend more for an acquisition than you have to."

Bryma is a planet in the Demilitarized Zone, site of a Cardassian colony. In 2370, the Maquis suspected that it was the location of a weapons depot used by Cardassian insurgents to launch attacks against Federation colonists in the DMZ.

Hakton VII is a planet in the Demilitarized Zone, and the site of a Federation colony. In 2370, three colonists were killed on Hakton VII by Cardassians, who claimed it was in response to the Maquis bombing of the Bok'Nor.

Umoth VIII is a planet in the Demilitarized Zone, and the site of a Federation colony. In 2370, 35 colonists were hospitalized after eating food from public replicators on Umoth VIII. Cardassian sabotage was believed responsible.

The Xepolites are a neutral, spacefaring race indigenous to the Alpha Quadrant. Xepolite free traders often worked as intermediaries for the Cardassians, and many of the arrangements they were involved in were illegal. This included the smuggling of weapons to Cardassian colonists in the Demilitarized Zone.

Hetman is a title referring to a position of authority in Xepolite culture, analogous to a ship's Captain. Drofo Awa was the Hetman of the Xepolite freighter encountered by Commander Sisko and Gul Dukat in 2370.

Lissepians were often used as intermediaries between the Cardassians and their colonies in the Demilitarized Zone following its creation in 2370. The Lissepians, however, were caught more often than their fellow Cardassian intermediaries, the Xepolites.

Dukat can shield his thoughts from a Vulcan mind-meld.

Cardassian trials decide the verdict before the public spectacle of the trial itself. (see also "Tribunal")

Hudson and Sisko both swore that they would make Captain by their thirties and Admiral by their forties.

The Regreeins are a species who farm wheat.
