STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE "The Maquis, Part II" TEASER FADE IN: RECAP OF "THE MAQUIS, PART I" 1 EXT. JUNGLE - DAY HUDSON has brought SISKO to a secluded area where the Maquis have made a temporary camp. In the background, we see KIRA and BASHIR, surrounded by a handful of armed Maquis. Though Hudson continues to keep his phaser trained on Sisko, both men, at least initially, try their best to keep the mood light and unthreatening. After all, they've been close for a long time and neither is anxious to see their friendship end. Still, the tension between them is never far from the surface. Hudson is especially uncomfortable. He knows that he's betrayed Sisko, and he also has mixed feelings about turning his back on Starfleet. This is not a man who has an easy time justifying the use of violence. HUDSON (amused) Ben, you should've seen the look on your face when you saw me standing there. SISKO I hardly recognized you without your uniform. Hudson reaches down into a satchel and takes out his folded Starfleet uniform, which he offers to Sisko. HUDSON (re: the uniform) Lately, it's been feeling a little tight on me. Sisko looks at the uniform and then reluctantly accepts it. SISKO Just like that? DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - TEASER 2. 1 CONTINUED: There's a long beat as Hudson waits for a response, but Sisko just stares down at the clothing in his hand. HUDSON (trying to convince himself as well) It's just a uniform, Ben. SISKO Is that all it is? (a beat) I remember when you first put it on. HUDSON The day we graduated from the Academy. We both swore we'd be starship captains by the time we were thirty. SISKO (smiles) And admirals by forty. (with feeling) I think we've both done pretty well for ourselves. HUDSON We did, didn't we. But now... now I've found something better. (re: his Maquis comrades) These settlers, Ben, if you saw all they've accomplished without any help from the Federation... you'd be fighting along with them. SISKO I don't think so. HUDSON (insistent) They've traveled out here to the back of the beyond and built homes out of the wilderness. Maybe the Federation can turn their backs on them, but I can't. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - TEASER 3. 1 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO I'm not asking you to. But your joining the Maquis isn't helping anyone. Your actions have only endangered the treaty, put millions of lives at risk... HUDSON (interrupting) The Federation believes every problem can be solved with a treaty. But out here, on the frontier, without the power of the Federation to back it up, a treaty's just a piece of paper. SISKO Do you have evidence that the Central Command has violated the treaty? HUDSON Not yet, but we will. SISKO If you're depending on Gul Dukat for proof, you're going to be disappointed. HUDSON Why do you say that? SISKO Because I don't think he knows. HUDSON We'll find out, won't we. SISKO I want him back, Cal. HUDSON He's not here. SISKO Then where is he? A long beat of tension, then... DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - TEASER 4. 1 CONTINUED: (3) HUDSON I never thought I'd see the day where you'd side with a Cardassian against me. SISKO Damn it, Cal. I'm on your side. HUDSON You have a funny way of showing it. SISKO I'm trying to stop you from making the biggest mistake of your life. The Federation believes in this treaty. If you destroy it, Starfleet'll come after you, and they won't be satisfied until you're behind bars. But if we put a stop to this now... if we work together to end the violence... HUDSON (angry) The violence will never end as long as the Central Command keeps smuggling weapons to their colonies. (a beat, regaining his poise) I wish there was another way to handle this thing. I really do. No one wants peace more than the Maquis... Hudson doesn't see the irony in this, but Sisko does. SISKO And you're willing to blow up Cardassian ships to get it. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - TEASER 5. 1 CONTINUED: (4) HUDSON (simply) The Bok'Nor won't ever smuggle weapons again. SISKO And its crewmembers won't be going home to their families, either. Hudson's silence tells Sisko he's made his point. SISKO (continuing, pressing his advantage) Look, you say that the Central Command is behind the smuggling. Fine. Let's prove it. HUDSON How? SISKO We'll go to Cardassia... find the evidence to back up your claim. And when we do, we'll take it to the Federation... HUDSON (interrupting) No. The Federation abandoned us. Told us to take care of ourselves. Well, that's what we intend to do. But you, Ben, you could be invaluable. (off Sisko's look) Let us use your station. SISKO For what? HUDSON Any number of things. A maintenance facility for our ships... a supply depot... DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - TEASER 6. 1 CONTINUED: (5) SISKO (interrupting) I can't allow that. HUDSON Every week, innocent people are being murdered by the Cardassians... and I won't allow their deaths to go unpunished. A beat. Stalemate. Sisko understands how far over the line his friend has crossed. SISKO You don't want peace, Cal. You want revenge. Hudson knows he's lost Sisko. He tries to hide his regret with a casual bravado. HUDSON I prefer to call it retaliation. (a beat) I'm sorry we won't be working together, Benjamin. It would've been nice... like old times. Hudson gestures for Sisko to join Kira and Bashir. 2 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) As Sisko walks towards his officers, Hudson stays back and points his phaser at Benjamin. Kira sees this and shouts a warning. KIRA Commander! Two of the Maquis shoot Kira and Bashir. Sisko whirls back toward Hudson. HUDSON Sorry, Ben. Hudson shoots Sisko, who collapses to the ground. 3 ANGLE ON HUDSON As he looks down at Sisko's unconscious body. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - TEASER 7. 3 CONTINUED: HUDSON Let's go. Knowing Ben's temper, we don't want to be here when he wakes up. And as Hudson and the Maquis EXIT... FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 8. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes.) 4 INT. AIRLOCK CORRIDOR DAX is waiting as the airlock door slides open and Sisko, Kira, and Bashir emerge. Dax falls into step beside them as they walk down the corridor. Sisko is instantly in action, giving orders, working with a full head of steam. SISKO Lieutenant, I want to speak to the Cardassian Central Command. DAX Then you're in luck. Legate Parn will be arriving here within the hour. Sisko and Dax exchange a look, acknowledging that things are heating up. SISKO A Legate. I feel honored. While I'm waiting, I'll talk with Starfleet. DAX Admiral Necheyev's already here. This gets another look from Sisko. 5 INT. OPS O'BRIEN at his station. Sisko, Dax and Kira ENTER from the Turbolift. Sisko heads for his office while calling to O'Brien. SISKO Chief, The Maquis must have transferred Dukat off their ship before reaching that asteroid. I want to know where they've hid him. O'BRIEN I could retrace their warp trail. See if they met up with any other ships. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 9. 5 CONTINUED: SISKO Do it. Sisko continues into his office... 6 INT. COMMANDER'S OFFICE Sisko ENTERS to find a forboding Admiral NECHEYEV waiting for him. SISKO (a greeting) Admiral... NECHEYEV (no time for pleasantries) Commander, the Cardassian Central Command has gone on military alert in response to the kidnapping of Gul Dukat. 7 NEW ANGLE Sisko refuses to allow the Admiral's brusque manner to rattle him. SISKO I'm not surprised. NECHEYEV This Security Chief of yours... the shape-shifter. Sisko pretends to a calm he's not really feeling in order to protect his Chief of Security. SISKO Odo. NECHEYEV (whatever) Odo. Are you sure you wouldn't be better off with a Starfleet officer heading up your security team. SISKO Admiral, I have complete faith in Odo's ability to do his job. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 10. 7 CONTINUED: The Admiral does not look convinced, but decides not to press it. NECHEYEV If you say so, Commander. SISKO I do. As for Gul Dukat, I assure you that we're taking all possible steps to locate him. NECHEYEV Good. Keep me informed of your progress. SISKO I will. But Admiral, there's a bigger issue here than rescuing Dukat. NECHEYEV (skeptical) And what is that? SISKO The Maquis. This is clearly not one of the Admiral's favorite subjects. NECHEYEV The Maquis... are a bunch of irresponsible hotheads. SISKO These "hotheads" are responsible for the bombing of the Bok'Nor. NECHEYEV I'm aware of that, Commander. We never should've allowed those colonists to remain on the Cardassian side of the Demilitarized Zone. SISKO Well they're there, Admiral. And they're not leaving. NECHEYEV (annoyed) Don't they realize that they're jeopardizing our treaty with the Cardassians? DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 11. 7 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO The Maquis never signed any treaty. NECHEYEV What about Commander Hudson? He's lived with these people. What's his analysis of the situation? A beat as Sisko has to decide whether to tell the truth about his friend. SISKO I'll... have to ask him. NECHEYEV You do that. (a beat) I want you to find the Maquis, Commander... talk to them... remind them that they're citizens of the Federation... that it's imperative that we preserve the treaty with the Cardassians. SISKO A treaty the Cardassians may not be honoring. NECHEYEV Are you questioning Federation policy, Commander? SISKO All I know is that the situation in the Demilitarized Zone is deteriorating rapidly. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 12. 7 CONTINUED: (3) NECHEYEV Personally, I think you're overstating the problem. Establish a dialogue with the Maquis. They're still Federation citizens. I'm sure they'll listen to reason. Good luck, Commander. Necheyev EXITS. SISKO (to himself, incredulous) Establish a dialogue? What the hell does she think I've been trying to do? 8 INCLUDE KIRA As she ENTERS Sisko's office. KIRA Commander? SISKO (still fuming) Just because a group of people belongs to the Federation doesn't mean they're saints. KIRA Excuse me? SISKO (to Kira) You know what the trouble is? KIRA (not following) No... SISKO (emphatic) The trouble is Earth. KIRA (still confused) Really? DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 13. 8 CONTINUED: SISKO On Earth there's no poverty, no crime, no war. You look out the window of Starfleet headquarters and you see... paradise. Well, it's easy to be a saint in paradise. But the Maquis don't live in paradise. Out there in the Demilitarized Zone, all the problems haven't been solved yet. Out there, there are no saints... just people. Angry, scared, determined people who are going to do whatever it takes to survive. Whether it meets with Federation approval or not. KIRA Makes sense to me. A beat as Sisko regains his composure. He smiles at Kira. SISKO (slight chagrin) I'm glad someone understands. KIRA Legate Parn's ship just put in at Docking Bay Five. Maybe you'd like to give him the same speech. SISKO I just might do that. ODO'S COM VOICE Odo to Sisko. SISKO (to comm) Go ahead, Constable. ODO'S COM VOICE I think you'd better get down to security. I've caught one of the Vulcan's accomplices. 9 INT. HOLDING AREA Close on the panicked yet calculating face of QUARK. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 14. 9 CONTINUED: QUARK Commander, I assure you that I had no idea that Sakonna was planning to kidnap Gul Dukat. 10 INCLUDE ODO AND SISKO standing in front of Quark's holding cell. Odo harumphs. ODO Really. Then perhaps you can explain why the two of you were spending so much time together. QUARK Surely it's no crime keeping company with a beautiful female. You ought to try it, Odo. It might improve your disposition. ODO Do you expect us to believe that a Vulcan would be interested in you for your lobes. QUARK Vulcans are a species that appreciate good ears. (to Sisko) Commander, this is very embarrassing, having to discuss my personal life in such surroundings. SISKO Embarrassment is going to be the least of your problems unless you tell me what kind of business arrangement you had with that woman. Quark looks for a way out, but sees none and decides to make the best of it. QUARK All right. But first I want to make it clear that I was led astray by Sakonna's feminine wiles. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 15. 10 CONTINUED: ODO Save the excuses, Quark. Tell us what you were up to. QUARK Sakonna was in the market for certain items which I was able to obtain for her... at a considerable discount, I might add. SISKO What items? Quark looks from one unfriendly face to another. ODO We're waiting. Quark shrugs and decides he might as well get this over with. QUARK Let's see, where to begin... she wanted some deflector shields... navigational arrays... maybe... a couple of hundred photon torpedoes. SISKO (outraged) Photon torpedoes. QUARK (apologetic) And pulse cannons... and some high energy disrupters... ODO Weapons. You sold weapons to a terrorist group. QUARK (feathers ruffled) I did not. The Pygorians sold them the weapons. I merely... made some introductions. Besides, I hadn't even heard of the Maquis until after Dukat was kidnapped. SISKO I want a complete list of every weapon she purchased. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 16. 10 CONTINUED: (2) QUARK Of course. And if you need some one to testify against Sakonna in court, I'd be more than willing... ODO (interrupting) Would you? QUARK In a second. (to Sisko) And let me know if there's anyone else who needs testifying against. Odo harumphs. QUARK I'll tell you one thing, Commander, Sakonna was on a tight clock. Whatever she needed those weapons for, it's going to happen within the next few days. SISKO Just get me the list, Quark. Sisko turns to go. ODO Sir? Sisko turns back. ODO (continuing) I assume you'll be going out to search for Dukat again? SISKO As soon as O'Brien tells us where to look. ODO I'd like to join you. After all, I am in charge of security. SISKO (nods) I'd be happy to have you along. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 17. 10 CONTINUED: (3) ODO (acknowledges, then) One other thing... (re: Quark) How long do I keep him in here? SISKO (looking at Quark) Forever. Sisko leaves. Odo smiles. QUARK I've always enjoyed the Commander's wry sense of humor. But really Odo, how long am I going to be in here? ODO I'll let you know. Odo EXITS. QUARK Odo... this isn't funny. Odo... 11 INT. PROMENADE Sisko EXITS Security and finds Kira and Legate PARN waiting for him. Kira looks as thrilled as ever to be in the company of a Cardassian. For his part, Parn never bothers to glance at or address Kira directly through the entire scene. KIRA Commander, this is Legate Parn. He insisted on seeing you immediately. PARN Crucial business demands immediate attention. And as a member of the Cardassian Central Command I must assure you, Commander, that what we have to discuss is most crucial indeed. SISKO I understand. And I assure you that we're doing all we can to find Gul Dukat. The three of them start walking down the Promenade. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 18. 11 CONTINUED: PARN Please, Commander, your efforts are appreciated but unnecessary. (off Sisko's surprise) You see the Central Command has learned that Gul Dukat was the leader of a small group of misguided officers who were funnelling weapons to our colonies in the Demilitarized Zone. A beat as Sisko and Kira absorb this news. Sisko keeps a poker face, hiding his skepticism from Parn. KIRA So the Maquis were right. The Cardassian settlers are being supplied by the Central Command. PARN (to Sisko) Dukat and the others were operating entirely without our knowledge. The Central Command would never sanction anything that would violate our treaty with the Federation. We've arrested Dukat's co-conspirators and they'll be dealt with accordingly. SISKO Where does that leave Dukat? PARN With the Maquis... Where he belongs. SISKO Are you saying you don't want him back? PARN I assume the Maquis will execute him for his crimes. SISKO I wouldn't be surprised. PARN Well then, I don't see where it makes a difference whether we do it or they do it. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 19. 11 CONTINUED: (2) Kira makes sure she's in Parn's sight line even though she addresses Sisko. KIRA (to Sisko) How do we know they won't use Dukat's death as an excuse to send troops into the Demilitarized Zone? PARN (to Sisko) I assure you, Commander, there'll be no retaliation. Cardassia has no desire to go to war again with the Federation. You have my word. KIRA (underwhelmed) Your word? They stop at an airlock. SISKO (gentle restraint) Major. (to Parn) I've found our little talk very enlightening. PARN I hoped you would. SISKO Unfortunately, I have some business to attend to. But I hope you'll take some time and enjoy the station. PARN Thank you, Commander. But I too must return to my duties. (re: passing Bajorans) Besides I'm afraid the place has lost its charm since the last time I was here. He EXITS through the airlock. KIRA I don't believe a word he said. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 19A. 11 CONTINUED: (3) SISKO Neither do I. But he did tell me something I needed to know. (off her look) Cal was right. The Central Command is smuggling weapons into the Demilitarized Zone. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 20. 11 CONTINUED: (4) And as they ponder the repercussions... 12 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) 13 INT. OPS Sisko, Kira, Dax, and O'Brien are in conference around the Ops Table. Dax is in the middle of bringing everyone up to speed. DAX We've just received a report that three Federation settlers were killed on Hakton Seven. The Cardassians claim it was in response to the destruction of the Bok'Nor. SISKO Which gives the Maquis a new excuse to strike back. (to O'Brien) Chief, what've you found. O'BRIEN Based on the residual subspace distortion from their warp drive, I was able to plot the course of the Maquis ship that took Dukat. 14 INCLUDE A MONITOR (VPB) As O'Brien brings up a graphic illustrating the ship's route. O'BRIEN As you can see, long range sensors show no signs of any other vessels traveling along the same route. SISKO All right, then they didn't transfer him to another ship. What about a planet? O'BRIEN It's possible. Their course took them past five M Class planets. I downloaded their coordinates into the Rio Grande's computer. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT ONE 21. 14 CONTINUED: SISKO Good work. (to Comm) Sisko to Odo. ODO'S COM VOICE Yes, Commander. SISKO Find Doctor Bashir and meet me at Landing Pad "C" immediately. ODO'S COM VOICE On our way. Sisko and the others stand. Sisko and Kira head for the Turbolift. KIRA Commander, you know there's no reason to go after Dukat. I mean, you heard Legate Parn. They don't want him back. SISKO Are you suggesting we leave him to the Maquis? KIRA Why risk our lives for a man responsible for so many Bajoran deaths? The way I see it, he's getting exactly what he deserves. There's a part of Sisko that might agree with her, but... SISKO (stepping into the Turbolift) Landing Pad "C." (to Kira) The Central Command wants him dead. That's reason enough for us to want him alive. Hold on Sisko's determined expression and then... FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT TWO 22. ACT TWO FADE IN: 15 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) A small M class planet. 16 INT. CAVES SAKONNA sits before DUKAT, her fingers placed on his forehead in the familiar posture of the Vulcan mind meld. AMAROS and a handful of other Maquis watch as Sakonna goes through the ritual. SAKONNA (concentrating deeply) My mind to your mind... your thoughts to my thoughts... Dukat remains immobile, his eyes closed. Sakonna seems to be straining. SAKONNA My mind to your mind... Your thoughts to my thoughts... It still doesn't seem to be working. SAKONNA (continuing, strained whisper) My mind... to your... mind... AMAROS What's wrong? Dukat's eyes open and he smiles. DUKAT It's not working. That's what's wrong. Sakonna breaks the connection. She looks exhausted. SAKONNA This is quite puzzling. I am unable to establish a mind meld. It would appear he has the ability to shield his thoughts. DUKAT It's simply a matter of discipline. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT TWO 23. 16 CONTINUED: AMAROS Now what do we do? SAKONNA After I rest a moment, I will try again. DUKAT (in surprising good humor) You people really don't do this very well, do you? Now Cardassians know how to extract information. But it can get rather... unpleasant. And everyone knows how the Federation dislikes unpleasantness. AMAROS I share very few sentiments with the Federation. DUKAT Oh, that's right. You're renegades, aren't you? (a beat) Or so you'd like to think. Unfortunately, the Federation has taught you your lessons all too well. (almost pitying) You simply lack the... commitment to do what's necessary. AMAROS Tell that to the crew of the Bok'Nor. DUKAT (dismissive) Anyone can blow up a ship. But to look your enemy in the eye... knowing you'll remember his face for the rest of your life... and still be able to do what's necessary... now that takes a stronger stomach than you'll ever have. AMAROS We'll see about that. He starts toward Dukat, but Sakonna stops him with a restraining hand. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT TWO 24. 16 CONTINUED: (2) SAKONNA No. He's right. We do not possess the Cardassians' gift for inflicting pain. DUKAT (to Amaros) You see. SAKONNA (to Dukat) Nor would we want such a gift. AMAROS But we do need to know when the Central Command's sending its next weapons shipment. So if it's all the same to you, Sakonna... I'll take over the interrogation. (to Dukat) This way we can find out just how "committed" I am. SISKO (O.S.) I don't think anyone's that interested. All eyes turn to... 17 NEW ANGLE Sisko, Bashir, and Odo standing on the other side of the cave. Sisko and Bashir have their phasers drawn. The Maquis immediately point their weapons at the intruders. SISKO Put down your weapons. We're not here to fight you. AMAROS If that's true, then you'll let us go about our business. SISKO I'm not leaving without Dukat. AMAROS Then you're not leaving. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT TWO 25. 17 CONTINUED: BASHIR Look, we're on the same side here. We all want to stop the arms shipments. Why not work together. DUKAT (to Sisko; an impatient hiss) Stop talking and shoot them. The Maquis tense and get ready for a fight. Sisko raises his hand in a calming gesture. SISKO No. That's not what we want. DUKAT (urgent) What are you waiting for? SISKO (to the Maquis) Put down your weapons. ODO Do as he says. DUKAT Shoot them. When Sisko doesn't respond, Dukat suddenly leaps up and backhands Sakonna across the face, knocking her to the ground. 18 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) Amaros opens fire. The other Maquis follow suit. What happens next takes only a matter of seconds: 19 SISKO AND BASHIR (OPTICAL) Avoid the panicked shots of the Maquis and return fire with cool professionalism. Bashir stuns one of the Maquis while Sisko neatly shoots two others in rapid succession. 20 ANGLE ON AMAROS Who breaks and runs. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT TWO 26. 21 ODO (OPTICAL) flings out his arm, which morphs and stretches into a whip. 22 AMAROS (OPTICAL) Is caught around the neck by the whip and is yanked back off his feet. 23 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) As the whip recoils off Amaros's neck, Dukat runs over to Amaros, grabs him by the collar, and violently slams him up against the cave wall. Sisko rushes over and restrains Dukat. SISKO Let him go. Dukat ignores Sisko, who has to physically pull him away. SISKO (continuing) I said let him go. Dukat backs down. The other Maquis are groggily struggling back to their feet. Bashir confiscates their phasers. SISKO Odo, get these people secured on the runabout. ODO With pleasure, Commander. He starts rounding up the Maquis. SISKO (re: Amaros) Except this one. AMAROS You mean I'm free to go? SISKO (to Amaros, urgent but controlled) Tell Cal Hudson I haven't told Starfleet anything yet. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT TWO 27. 23 CONTINUED: SISKO (Cont'd) Tell him we can still solve this thing together, but we're running out of time. Tell him I still have his uniform. He can have it back anytime he wants. Amaros nods and takes off. Hold on Sisko hoping for the best but not even sure that Amaros will relay his message. FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 28. ACT THREE FADE IN: 24 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Re-establishing. 25 INT. DUKAT'S GUEST QUARTERS Dukat, seated at a table, pours himself a glass of some exotic Cardassian beverage. He pauses to admire its color, takes a sip, and closes his eyes in bliss. He then surveys the table, which is covered with Japanese-sized portions of Cardassian delicacies. As he reaches for one with anticipation, the door CHIMES. DUKAT (disappointed) Enter. The door opens and Sisko walks in. SISKO I just came by to see how you were doing. Dukat eats with relish. DUKAT I find a good meal to be extremely relaxing, especially after a difficult day. SISKO So do I. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 29. 25 CONTINUED: DUKAT Really. I wonder what else we have in common. SISKO Very little, I imagine. DUKAT (laughs) Other than the fact that you have my office. (a beat) What's going to happen to your prisoners? SISKO They'll be tried for their crimes under the Federation Uniform Code of Justice. DUKAT And if they're found innocent? SISKO I doubt they will be, but if they are, they'll be set free. DUKAT How barbaric. On Cardassia, the verdict is always known before the trial begins. And it's always the same. SISKO In that case, why bother with a trial at all? DUKAT Because the people demand it. They enjoy watching justice triumph over evil. Every time. They find it comforting. SISKO Isn't there a chance you might try an innocent man by mistake? DUKAT Cardassians don't make mistakes. SISKO I'll have to remember that. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 30. 25 CONTINUED: (2) Dukat eats some more of his meal, then... DUKAT One thing does puzzle me, Commander. Surely the Central Command was informed of my kidnapping. SISKO They learned about it almost as soon as it happened. DUKAT Then why was I rescued by you? And why wasn't the station surrounded by Cardassian ships demanding my return? SISKO We did receive a visit from Legate Parn. DUKAT (a satisfied smile) I'm sure he made some rather ugly threats on my behalf. SISKO He said that you were the one responsible for smuggling weapons into the Demilitarized Zone. And if the Maquis didn't execute you, the Central Command would. (deadpan) After a comforting trial I'm sure. A long beat as Dukat absorbs this while struggling to maintain his temper. DUKAT It appears my relationship with the Central Command has deteriorated somewhat. I knew this was inevitable the moment we withdrew from Bajor. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 31. 25 CONTINUED: (3) SISKO Are you saying they blame you for the withdrawal? DUKAT There are some who believe I should have killed every last Bajoran when I had the chance. (wistful) Ah, well. Too late for that, I'm afraid. Commander, it seems I was... SISKO (suggesting) Mistaken about the arms shipment? DUKAT It appears I was misinformed. I'm beginning to believe the Central Command is smuggling weapons into the Demilitarized Zone after all. SISKO You really didn't know, did you? DUKAT (trying to put on a good face) They never bothered to tell me. (a beat) If I help you stop the smuggling, will you help me stop the Maquis? Sisko pauses. He knows that would be like making a pact with the devil, but it seems that he and Dukat are on the same side for a change. SISKO You've got yourself a deal. I've called a staff meeting for oh-nine- hundred. DUKAT I'll be there. Sisko turns to leave. DUKAT Oh, and Commander? Sisko turns. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 32. 25 CONTINUED: (4) DUKAT Thank you for coming to my rescue. SISKO (wryly) I'm sure you'd have done the same for me. Both men know this is at best improbable. They exchange a look of mutual understanding and Sisko EXITS. 26 INT. OPS Sisko, Kira, Dax, O'Brien, Odo and Dukat are seated around the Ops table. SISKO Constable, you have the list of weapons Sakonna bought from Quark? ODO I do. And quite a list it is. (reading off a PADD) Six ship-mounted high energy disrupters, three particle accelerators, two hundred photon torpedoes and a dozen pulse cannons. KIRA With that kind of firepower, the Bajorans could've launched a full- scale assault on Cardassia. DUKAT (smug) And lost. O'BRIEN Sounds like the Maquis have had their fill of border skirmishes. They're ready for something bigger. SISKO According to Quark, they're planning to launch their first attack any day now. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 33. 26 CONTINUED: DAX (to Odo) Have you been able to make any headway with Sakonna? ODO Have you ever tried interrogating a Vulcan, Lieutenant? DAX No. ODO Neither did I until today. I wouldn't advise it. That calm measured voice that tells you nothing, that impassive stare, it can be quite frustrating. DUKAT Perhaps I could question her? SISKO I don't think so. DUKAT Pity. I like a challenge. KIRA You want a challenge, try finding out how the Central Command is getting weapons into the Demilitarized Zone. DUKAT (unphased) My guess would be by way of a Xepolite Free Trader. DAX Why the Xepolites? DUKAT Because the Xepolites have often served as intermediaries for us in the past. SISKO So have the Lissepians. DUKAT But the Xepolites have never been caught. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 34. 26 CONTINUED: (2) Dukat's words carry considerable weight. And as Sisko tries to decide whether or not to trust the Cardassian... 27 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) A Xepolite Free Trader being approached by one of the Runabouts. 28 INT. MEKONG Sisko and O'Brien are at the controls. Kira and Dukat are seated in back. O'BRIEN The Xepolite ship isn't responding to our hail, sir. DUKAT Of course they're not responding. Would you respond to a Federation hail if your cargo bays were full of Cardassian weapons? DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 35. 28 CONTINUED: SISKO (to Kira) Scan their ship, Major. Let's see what they're carrying. Kira works the proper controls. KIRA Our scanners can't penetrate their hull. O'BRIEN (off monitor) No wonder. It's composed of a sensor reflective material. They obviously value their privacy. SISKO Chief, you and Gul Dukat remain here. Major, you're with me. Let's go see if it's their privacy or their guilt they're trying to protect. O'BRIEN Sorry, Commander, but you can't transport over. They just raised their shields. DUKAT You're wasting time. Xepolite ships can reach a maximum speed of warp nine point eight. If they decide to run, we'll never catch them. KIRA (temper flaring) So what would you suggest? Dukat's happy for an opportunity to instruct. DUKAT I would breach their shields with my phasers and destroy their bridge. KIRA (that figures) Killing everyone there. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 36. 28 CONTINUED: (2) DUKAT That's correct. Then I would lock onto the ship with my tractor beam and tow it and its cargo back to the station. Very simple. Very effective. SISKO And needlessly bloody. KIRA Sounds like a Cardassian plan to me. SISKO Chief, fire a phaser across their bow. Let's see if we can't get their attention. O'BRIEN Yes, sir. He hits a panel. 29 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) The Runabout fires a warning shot at the Xepolite ship. 30 INT. MEKONG As before. O'BRIEN That woke them up. They're hailing us. Kira, Sisko, and O'Brien can't help but give Dukat triumphant looks. SISKO On my monitor, Chief. 31 INCLUDE MONITOR (OPTICAL) The XEPOLITE CAPTAIN appears on screen. XEPOLITE (on monitor) I am Drofo Awa, Hetman of this vessel. What do you want from us? DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 37. 31 CONTINUED: SISKO I'm Commander Benjamin Sisko of the United Federation of Planets. We believe you're carrying Cardassian weapons to their colonies in the Demilitarized Zone. XEPOLITE (on monitor, sincerely) Then you believe wrong, Commander. My ship is carrying five kilotons of Regreein wheat husks, nothing more. SISKO Five kilotons. That's a lot of wheat husks. With your permission I'd like to come aboard and see what that looks like. XEPOLITE (on monitor) Permission denied. Any attempt to board my vessel will be considered an act of piracy. Is that clear? SISKO Call it anything you like, but you're not going anywhere until we search your ship. XEPOLITE (on monitor, threatening tone) In that case, Commander... DUKAT (to the Xepolite) In that case, you'll do exactly as you're told. You'll allow us free access to your ship, so that we can verify that you are indeed carrying Cardassian weapons into the Demilitarized Zone. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 38. 31 CONTINUED: (2) DUKAT (cont'd) You will then follow us back to Deep Space Nine, where your cargo will be confiscated and you will make a full confession detailing everything you know about the smuggling of weapons into the Demilitarized Zone. You will then sign that confession, after which you and your ship will be allowed on your way. Is that clear. XEPOLITE (shocked) I don't understand... you're a Cardassian. DUKAT I'm not just any Cardassian. I'm Gul Dukat, Commander of the Second Order. You have fifteen seconds to lower your shields or we'll destroy your ship. The Xepolite looks panicky. XEPOLITE No... wait. DUKAT Ten seconds. XEPOLITE It's not that simple. DUKAT Seven seconds. XEPOLITE I've already been paid. DUKAT Four seconds. XEPOLITE Stop counting... stop counting. O'BRIEN He's lowering his shields. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT THREE 39. 31 CONTINUED: (3) XEPOLITE (on monitor, a defeated man) I'll await your arrival, Commander. HOLDING AREA Quark and Sakonna are sharing the same cell. QUARK I hope you're happy. SAKONNA I am a Vulcan. My emotional state is irrelevant. QUARK Well I'm a Ferengi. And my emotional state is very relevant. And right now, I'm miserable. And it's all your fault. SAKONNA You were well paid for your assistance. QUARK Not well enough. Look, why don't you just tell them what they want to know? Sakonna just stares at him. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT FOUR 42. 33 CONTINUED: QUARK (continuing, talking confidentially) I know the Cardassians can't be trusted. I know that the Central Command would like nothing better than to destroy the Federation colonies in the Demilitarized Zone. SAKONNA Then you agree with our position? QUARK Not for a second. SAKONNA Why not? QUARK Because your position is... (searching for the right word) Illogical. This takes Sakonna off guard. SAKONNA Do you propose to lecture me on logic? QUARK I don't want to, but you leave me no choice. It all comes down to the third Rule of Acquisition. (off her blank reaction) You don't know that one, do you? SAKONNA I am not well versed in Ferengi philosophy. QUARK Remind me to get you a copy of the Rules. You never know when they'll come in handy. Now, the third rule clearly states, "Never pay more for an acquisition than you have to." SAKONNA Logical. But I fail to see how that applies to my situation. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT FOUR 43. 33 CONTINUED: (2) QUARK You want to acquire peace. Fine. Peace is good. But how much are you willing to pay for it? SAKONNA Whatever it costs. QUARK That's the kind of irresponsible spending that causes so many business ventures to fail. You're forgetting the third rule. Right now peace could be bought at a bargain price and you don't even realize it. SAKONNA I find this very confusing. QUARK Then I'll make it so simple that even a Vulcan can understand. The Central Command has been caught red- handed smuggling weapons to their settlers. So from now on, every ship approaching the Demilitarized Zone will be searched. Without the support of the Central Command, the Cardassian settlers won't be so eager to fight. SAKONNA You forget the weapons they already have. QUARK They have weapons... you have weapons... everyone has weapons. But right now, no one has a clear advantage. So the price of peace is at an all-time low. This is the perfect time to sit down and hammer out an agreement. Don't you get it... attacking the Cardassians now will only escalate the conflict and make peace more expensive in the long run. Now I ask you, is that logical? Quark sits down, pleased with his performance. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT FOUR 44. 34 OMITTED 35 CLOSE ON SAKONNA As she tries to come up with an answer to Quark's argument. 36 INT. DUKAT'S GUEST QUARTERS Close on Dukat. SISKO According to Sakonna, the Maquis are going to attack the depot sometime within the next fifty-two hours. DUKAT But she didn't tell you on which colony the depot's hidden? SISKO She says she doesn't know. DUKAT (skeptical) How convenient. SISKO I believe her. DUKAT Why? Because Vulcans don't lie? SISKO As a rule, they don't. DUKAT They don't blow up ships either... as a rule. But let's assume she is telling the truth. I trust you haven't shared this information with the Central Command? DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT FOUR 45-47. 37 CONTINUED: SISKO No. I haven't. DUKAT Good. Because they would never trust you to handle this matter alone. SISKO But they would be able to tell me where the depot is located. DUKAT Leave that to me. (off Sisko's look) I may no longer be a favorite with the Central Command, but I know people who are. Sisko nods appreciatively. That's what he was hoping. SISKO In the meantime, I'll go to Volan Three. See if I can talk some sense into the Maquis. DUKAT And if you can't? SISKO Don't worry, Dukat. I told you I'd stop them. And one way or another, I will. Sisko EXITS. 38 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) Runabout moving through space. 39 OMITTED 40 INT. VOLAN COLONY MEETING HOUSE KOBB is presiding. Suddenly they hear noise from outside the council chamber. Kobb motions to Amaros to see what's going on. Amaros heads for the door, which suddenly opens and... 41 SISKO ENTERS, carrying a small satchel over his shoulder. KOBB (not pleased at the interruption) Commander Sisko, what a pleasant surprise. If you'll just wait a moment or two, I'll finish up this meeting and we can talk privately. SISKO That won't be necessary. I want everyone to hear what I have to say. (addressing the room) I don't know how many of you here actually belong to the Maquis. Those of you who don't probably have friends who do. So please make sure you pass along what I'm about to tell you. (a beat) There is a treaty currently in place between Cardassia and the Federation. If you make yourself the enemy of Cardassia, you'll make yourself the enemy of the Federation. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT FOUR 49. 41 CONTINUED: The crowd erupts in reaction. Sisko waits for the buzz to subside. SISKO Now I know the Maquis plan on attacking a Cardassian weapons depot. My advice to them... to you... is to call it off. Because I'll be waiting there. And I'll stop you. 42 NEW ANGLE Suddenly all the doors to the chamber open and Hudson and several armed Maquis ENTER. HUDSON A very rousing speech, Ben. I suppose my best rebuttal would be to kill you. SISKO But you won't. Sisko puts the satchel on to the floor in front of Hudson. HUDSON What's this? SISKO (a challenge) Your uniform. HUDSON You always were an optimist. Hudson puts the satchel down on a table. SISKO I have reason to be. The way I see it, now that we've stopped the shipments of Cardassian weapons, there's no longer any need for the Maquis. You and I can work together to reach a peace agreement with the Cardassian colonies. HUDSON It's too late for that. We're in a war here. And I intend to win it. DEEP SPACE: "The Maquis, II" - 02/17/94 - ACT FOUR 50. 42 CONTINUED: HUDSON (off Sisko's reaction) I could use your help, Ben. I'm asking you as a friend. SISKO And as a friend, I have to say no. If you attack that depot, you're going to have to get through me first. HUDSON I hope not. I truly hope not. 43 ANGLE ON HUDSON (OPTICAL) As he fires his phaser at the satchel, totally disintegrating it. Then Hudson and the Maquis EXIT. 44 ON SISKO Knowing that the next time he sees his friend, one of them might not survive. FADE OUT. OPS Sisko, Kira, Dax, Bashir, O'Brien, Odo and Dukat all at Ops as they prepare for their upcoming mission. DUKAT The Bryma Colony. According to my sources, that's the location of the weapons depot. SISKO Then our objective is simple -- prevent the Maquis ships from reaching Bryma. DAX We're going to have to intercept them before they're picked up by the colony's sensors. KIRA Good point. If the Cardassian colonists even suspect they're about to come under attack, they'll send a message to Cardassia asking for reinforcements. O'BRIEN I don't care how much the Cardassians care about the treaty. If the Maquis launch an assault against a civilian target, the Central Command will have to respond. SISKO We could wind up with a full scale war on our hands. We have to stop the Maquis. (a beat) Our runabouts will take up a defensive position just outside Bryma colony's sensor range. O'BRIEN The best way to detect incoming ships would be to hide a couple of dozen sensor probes in the system's Oort Cloud. BASHIR So we'll have three ships and they'll have two. The odds are in our favor, anyway. O'BRIEN Don't expect that to give us much of an advantage, Julian. The colonists are used to being outnumbered. They'll fight just that much harder. DAX (to Sisko) How do you propose to stop them? DUKAT (before Sisko can answer) What's that human expression? "Shoot to kill." Sisko gives Dukat a reprimanding look. SISKO We'll stop them with words if possible... with force if necessary. KIRA So if they fire at us, we have orders to shoot back? SISKO That's correct. We'll target their warp engines and weapons arrays, try to disable them. DUKAT How noble. I hope the Maquis will be as obliging to you. SISKO I've known Cal Hudson a long time.
