Bertila Damas (Sakonna) also appears in Voyager's "Survival Instinct" as Three Of Nine, or Marika Willkarah.

Features recycled Tau Cygna V matte painting from the Next Generation episode "The Ensigns Of Command" being used as the Volan II Maquis settlement.

Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko) does not appear in this episode.

One of the Maquis at the meeting between Commander Hudson and Gul Evek is a colonist of Dorvan V who appeared in the Next Generation episode "Journey's End" only a month before.

Sisko states that a few ships have been lost in the Badlands, foreshadowing the occurrences of the USS Voyager two years later.

The conversation that Sisko has with the Admiral was actually included in the script, even though it would not be heard. The conversation can be found in the script here.

In the first scene of act 1, when Kira and O'Brien are searching the wreckage of the Bok'Nor, Kira is not wearing her Bajoran earring.

Jeri Taylor on "The Maquis, Part I":
"We knew that we wanted to include a renegade element in Voyager, and that the show would involve a ship housing both Starfleet people and these idealistic freedom fighters that the Federation felt were outlaws. So in order to avoid having some burdensome backstory and exposition in Voyager's pilot, we decided we could plant the idea of the Maquis in the shows that were already on the air."

Director David Livingston on "The Maquis, Part I":
"It was tough because it was a setup show. You know going into it that you're not gonna get all the goodies. You have to do all the work, all the exposition, all the character introduction, so it lacks something on its own. You can't really pay off anything you set up, because that's going to happen in the next part. The second hour's going to get the action. I got very little action, although I got to have Gul Dukat hit somebody!"

David Livingston talks about the Kira/Dax scene at the start of the episode:
"Nana and Terry are great together, especially when they're discussing sexual stuff, because although it's two women talking, it always ends up kind of bizarre. Kira is kind of macho, a very masculine kind of woman in a military uniform, who has a sexual side, but most of the time is running around acting really rigid. And Dax has been both a man and a woman several times, so the dynamics between the two are a lot more interesting than just two women talking."

David Livingston on his intentions on Sakonna's outfit:
"I had something to do with that. In fact, I wanted her even more provocatively dressed. I thought it would be a great contrast to put this woman in a really sexy dress. She needed to be sexy - she was putting the make on Quark!"

Robert Blackman on Livingston's suggestion:
"We've never had a clear view of a Vulcan's form. Robert Fletcher (the costume designer for many of the Star Trek feature films) really developed a look for them in the films, but everyone's taste is different. I take certain things from that - the width of the shoulders, a kind of neckline - and then go on to do an interpretation that makes sense to me. But for Sakonna, it was going to be something else entirely: purple panne velvet dress right down to the ankle, with purple shoes. And we were already in the process of making it when we found out Rick Berman was opposed to it."
