RICK BERMAN
(Writer, 'Emissary')
"The stuff that we reshot is very normal on a pilot. We
probably did less than most two-hour pilots. It wasn't a
question of making [Sisko] more sympathetic, as far as I
was concerned. I think Michael and I had very specific
ideas about what we wanted, and the actors were just
getting their feet wet."
"I miss it
all [cut scenes]. There's a wonderful scene where Sisko
goes back down to Bajor to return the orb to Kai Opaka
that we took out. Cutting is horrible, especially when
it's something so close to you as the pilot was."
"I think we
are all happily surprised at the response. I knew that we
had created a show that had wonderful potential and,
slowly but surely, I knew that it was coming together and
was going to be wonderful. I expected it would be
successful, but I didn't expect it would be as successful
as it was and I was a little bit amazed. We were in 'Time'
and 'Newsweek'. I think that both Michael and I are the
kind of people who aren't all that comfortable with
praise. As a result, we just sort of brush it aside and
plunge on, which is what we've being doing."
