The Jem'Hadar use an antiproton beam to detect the USS Defiant through its Romulan-designed cloaking device. The Cardassians would later use the same technique to find the hijacked Defiant under command of the renegade Thomas Riker ("Defiant").

Beritium and Diamide are valuable metallic alloys used in the construction of Cardassian skimmers. Kira Nerys' earring was made of diamide-laced beritium, from the wreckage of a skimmer she destroyed in her first battle with the Cardassians.

The Callinon system is located inside Dominion system near the Karemma homeworld. Callinon VII is the site of an unmanned subspace relay station where the Karemma were instructed to direct all their enquiries to the Founders. Dax and O'Brien were stranded on Callinon VII when a Jem'Hadar strike team forced the Defiant to leave the system.

The dirak is a unit of currency used by the Karemma. The Karemma First Minister, Ornithar, offers Quark 52 diraks for Kira Nerys' earring.

The ODN matrix is a part of a starship's optical data network, or ODN. T'Rul told Benjamin Sisko that she couldn't restore warp drive on the Defiant because she couldn't align the ODN matrices with the phase inducers.

A subspace variance is radiated from cloaked ships at warp speeds, according to T'Rul. This variance is apparently detectable by the Jem'Hadar. When the cloaked Defiant was detected by the Jem'Hadar in the Gamma Quadrant, Benjamin Sisko's first instinct was to decloak and prepare to fight them. T'Rul stated that dropping out of warp would eliminate the subspace variance. The Defiant would then become undetectable.

Apparently the Ferengi have established a tulaberry wine trade with the Karemma by this point after negotiating such a trade in "Rules of Acquisition."

Odo uses one of the Defiant's Type 18 shuttlepods to escape the Jem'Hadar attack and lands it on the Founder's homeworld. The Type-18 is a smaller version of Starfleet's larger shuttlecraft although some are outfitted with low-capacity warp drives. The craft has a small amount of cargo space available and can support two pilots comfortably.

Commander Sisko assisted in the design work and flight tests of the USS Defiant at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards orbiting Mars.

A Yoruba mask is an ancient form of cultural art from Africa. Sisko owned a 2,000-year old Yoruba mask which he brought to Deep Space 9 when he returned from Starfleet with the Defiant. Jake said that when his father finally brought the mask and other items in Sisko's African art collection out of storage on Earth to DS9, it meant that the station was now officially their home.
