This is the first episode in which the Bajoran Occupational Government is mentioned. It was previously implied that the Cardassians simply eliminated the Bajoran government altogether during the Occupation of Bajor. The Ilvian Proclamation, which sentenced all collaborators to exile, is also revealed.

This marks Camille Saviola's (Opaka) first appearance since her character chose to remain in the Gamma Quadrant in the first-season episode, "Battle Lines". She returned once more in an orb shadow, but physically, Opaka presumably remained in the Gamma Quadrant. ("Rapture")

The visible tension between Winn and the crew of DS9 is left over from Winn's attempt to stop Keiko O'Brien from teaching secular science to Bajoran schoolchildren. During a visit to the station, Winn coerced a Bajoran worker to try to kill Vedek Bareil, who opposed Winn's way of thinking and threatened her popular support. However, as there was no evidence to prove her involvement, she was never indicted. ("In the Hands of the Prophets")

The name of Kai Opaka's son is never revealed.

Ferengi Rule of Acquisition #285 states "No good deed ever goes unpunished."

The Bajoran Choosing Ceremony is the process, primarily a popular vote among the Vedeks of the Vedek Assembly, that the Bajoran Kai is chosen.

Bek was a Prylar of the Bajoran religion during the Occupation of Bajor. During the time of the Kendra Valley Massacre he was the liaison for the Vedek Assembly and the Occupational Government.

The Dakeen Monastery was a religious retreat on Bajor. During the Occupation of Bajor, Vedek Bareil Antos visited the monastery during the time surrounding the Kendra Valley Massacre, and during his visit, he had virtually no communication with the outside world.

The Kendra Valley Massacre occurred during the Occupation of Bajor, where 42 members of the Bajoran Resistance were killed.

Prylars are considered monks within the Bajoran religious establishment. They are able to hold services, and also assist Vedeks and other higher-ranking members of the religious orders.

Vedek Tolena was a candidate for Kai in 2370. Major Kira Nerys joked with Vedek Bareil Antos, who was also a candidate for Kai, that she had planned on voting for Tolena.
