Odo, Bashir, Quark and Jake Sisko do not appear in this episode.

Astatine is an element, number 85 on the periodic table. The marshes of an M-Class planet, about 160 million kilometers from Orellius Minor in the Gamma Quadrant, are filled with astatine deposits.

A duonetic field inhibits electromagnetic activity and can be caused by the presence of astatine.

The Erewon-class personnel transport was a type of 24th century Federation starship. The Erewon-class was about four times larger than a Starfleet runabout.

The USS Rio Grande was exposed to high levels of gamma radiation after it flew near Orellius Minor.

The Gasko was a Romulan starship in service during the 24th century. In 2370, the Gasko reported the abandoned USS Rio Grande travelling through Sector 401 at warp 2 without any crew.

Gemulon V was to be the site of a Federation colony in the late 2350s, but the SS Santa Maria never reached its destination. Officially, it developed life support problems while travelling through the Orellius system and was forced to crash-land on a planet.

Golanga was a soccer player who played the game in the mid-24th century. In 2366, he hurt his knee in a game and had to have it replaced with a bio-implant.

Hematite is the mineral form of iron oxide. Miles O'Brien asked Joseph to have a look at a hematite deposit on a planet in the Orellius system, although O'Brien used the opportunity to incapacitate him.

The Hopi are a group of Native Americans originally from the Southwestern United States. A talented Hopi once taught Jadzia Dax a rope trick, which she used as a way of explaining to Kira Nerys about her plan of using a tractor beam at warp to "rope" a runaway runabout.

Orellius infection is caused by a microbe transmitted by an insect native to the M-class planet in the Orellius system colonized by Alixus and her followers. Its symptoms include swelling and high fever. Despite their best attempts, the colonists had not been able to discover a natural cure for it. It was likely easily treatable by medications found in a standard medkit.

The Orellius system is the star system around the star Orellius Minor. It contains one M-class planet, located at an orbital distance of 160 million kilometers.

The USS Rutledge was a Federation starship that was in service during the 24th century. In 2346, Miles O'Brien transferred to the Rutledge as an enlisted crewman. After rescuing 13 Starfleet officers from Setlik III in 2347, O'Brien was promoted to the tactical officer aboard the Rutledge.

The SS Santa Maria (BDR-529) was an Erewon-class personnel transport sent out to colonize Gemulon V around 2360.

When Benjamin Sisko asked Miles O'Brien to give his son some engineering experience, but not make it too easy, O'Brien replied that he would have Jake "up to his elbows in thorium grease."

Admiral Mitsuya was a 24th century Starfleet flag officer. Mitsuya was one of the best poker players in the fleet, next to Jadzia Dax. In mid-2370, Mitsuya diverted the USS Crockett to Deep Space 9 to talk about Cardassian foreign policy. Dax claimed that that was just an excuse to get Commander Sisko in a game of poker because Mitsuya cleaned him out the year before.
