This episode takes place on the fourth anniversary of the Battle of Wolf 359.

Altrina had lunch with Jake Sisko and Tiet in 2370. Tiet pointed out to Altrina that she was eating worms instead of Klingon food, a revelation after which she vomited all over the table.

Nidell and Gideon Seyetik prepared a dish in 2370 using an Andorian boiler. It was cooked at exactly 500 Kelvin.

Andorian tuber root is a high-calorie delicacy from Andoria. Jadzia Dax is particularly fond of it.

Sisko refers to Samuel Beckett, along with similarily natured Vincent Van Gogh and Y'Raka as an example of pessimistic artists who created something of great worth. Contrary to this view, Gideon Seyetik described their works as "dreary, dark and depressing".

Blue Horizon is a Federation planet terraformed by famed terraformer Professor Gideon Seyetik. His crowning achievement on the planet was Da Vinci Falls. Commander Benjamin Sisko and his son Jake visited Blue Horizon on their way to Deep Space 9 in 2369.

Jake Sisko has a calculus test in this episode.

The Central Gallery is an art museum on Ligobis X. In the 24th century, the Gallery featured several of Gideon Seyetik's paintings. Julian Bashir once visited the Gallery and, when he met Seyetik, told him he had never seen such huge canvasses.

Benjamin Sisko orders Chiralten tea (with a double twist of lemon) instead of raktajino.

Epsilon 119 is the dead star which Professor Gideon Seyetik took a shuttlecraft carrying protomatter into in an attempt to re-ignite it. The experiment was a success although the professor lost his life.

"The Fall of Kang" was an epic poem written by the Klingon poet G'Trok. The following excerpt is quoted by Gideon Seyetik:

"So honor the valiant who die 'neath your sword...
But pity the warrior who slays all his foes."

Ice salt is a popular ingredient in foods, a variety of salt. Gideon Seyetik used a dash of ice salt in his broth.

Kalo root is a plant that is used in cooking.  Gideon Seyetik used it in one of his recipes. He seared the Kalo roots slightly before putting them on slices of roasted Waroon.

The USS Prometheus NCC-71201 was a Nebula-class starship in service in the 24th century, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Piersall. In 2370, the Prometheus was assigned to assist Professor Gideon Seyetik in his project to re-ignite the dead star Epsilon 119.

Psychoprojective telepathy is a telepathic ability of the Halanans. On a visit to Deep Space 9 aboard the USS Prometheus, Nidell lost control of her psychoprojective telepathy, allowing Fenna to appear to Benjamin Sisko.

Sapphire wine is a blue-colored alcoholic beverage from Earth. According to Gideon Seyetik, Sapphire wine resembled the deep blue ocean near Da Vinci Falls on planet Blue Horizon.

Terosa Prime is a planet. Federation Professor Gideon Seyetik and his wife Nidell visited Terosa Prime in 2367, during which Nidell nearly died when she lost control of her psychoprojective telepathy and created an alter ego, Fenna.

Villus Thed was a member of a telepathic species. Odo received a subspace transmission that indicated that Thed was on his way to Deep Space 9. He told two of his Bajoran deputies to notify him when Thed arrived and to keep him under constant surveillance. Odo also reminded them to stay "at least" five meters from him, as he would be able to read their thoughts if they came any closer.

Redspice is a type of Vulcan herb.
