The plot of the episode elaborates on a statement made by
Gul Dukat: "On Cardassia, the verdict is always known before the trial
begins, and it's always the same." (see "The
Maquis, Part II") |

The discussion to which Evek alludes occurred when
O'Brien contacted Evek for assistance in exterminating a colony of
Cardassian voles that had made its home aboard DS9. At the time, he was
credited simply as "Cardassian Officer." (see "Playing
God") |

This is the first time we discover that the Cardassians
use cosmetic alterations in order to infiltrate their enemies. A later
example would be Seska on Star Trek:
Voyager whose true identity is revealed in the episode "State
of Flux," and Gul Dukat, who masquerades as Anjohl Tennan in Season
7. |

O'Brien states that his position on DS9 is Chief
Engineer, although it is Chief of Operations, which he repeatedly states
later while he is processed. |

The Cardassian Articles of Jurisprudence were laws
governing treatment and rights of prisoners in the Cardassian justice
system. These articles included such cautions as:
"You have the right to refuse to answer questions, but such refusal
may be construed as a sign of guilt." |

Central Prison is a facility on Cardassia Prime. In 2370,
Miles O'Brien was taken there after having been arrested by Gul Evek on
a charge of giving weapons to the Maquis. |

Conservator is a Cardassian title, vaguely similar to
that of a lawyer. In effect, however, it is more equivalent to that of a
public defender. The Conservator is not supposed to win a case, but to
prepare the criminal for a moving confession of guilt on the floor of
the court. |

Gul Evek lost two of his three sons during the Cardassian
Wars. |

Minezaki Koto was a Japanese composer in the late 18th
century. When Miles O'Brien had angered his wife Keiko by bringing
technical literature on their vacation in 2370, he tried to please her
by playing some music from Minezaki in the runabout. |

The Petersons were a family who lived on Deep Space 9 in
2370. Miles O'Brien and Keiko O'Brien left their daughter, Molly with
the Peterson family when they went on vacation that year. It was
humorously suggested that Molly liked the Petersons better than her own
parents. |

The USS Prokofiev was a Federation starship that
was in service during the late 24th century. The Prokofiev was
dispatched to the border of the Cardassian Demilitarized Zone in late
2370, following the arrest of Starfleet officer Miles O'Brien. The
Enterprise-D and the Valdemar were also ordered to patrol the
border of the DMZ. |

Will Kayden served aboard the Rutledge, as did Raymond
Boone until his capture at Setlik III. |
|
|
|
Amongst the casualties of the Setlik III massacre were
Captain Maxwell's family, as well as Rutledge crewmembers Will Kayden
and Raymond Boone. Boone himself was killed by the Cardassians after
being captured. He was replaced by a surgically altered Cardassian
operative. He was not revealed as an imposter until 2370. |

Raymond Boone, or rather a Cardassian operative
surgically altered to resemble him, settled with his family on Volan III
to operate a ladarium mining sluice following his return from Cardassian
custody after Setlik III. |
