This is the first episode in which Morn is named in the
script (although not in dialogue). Of course, as almost any DS9 fan
knows, "Morn" is an anagram of Norm, a character in Cheers who could
always be found at the bar. Up until this episode, Morn had been
informally called "the Grinch" or "Grandpa Grinch" by the show's crew. |

D.C. Fontana, who co-wrote the teleplay, was a frequent
writer of the original Star Trek, and an assistant of Gene Roddenberry. |
Gregory Itzin would later appear as Hain in the season
six episode "Who
Mourns For Morn?" and in the seventh season episode "Critical
Care" of Voyager. |
Colm Meaney (Chief O'Brien) and Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko)
do not appear in this episode. |
Fionnula Flanagan would appear later on the Next
Generation as Juliana Tainer in the episode Inheritance and as V'Lar in
the Enterprise episode "Fallen
Hero". |
Anne Haney previously appeared as Rishon Uxbridge in the
Next Generation episode "The
Survivors". |
To date, this is the last Star Trek episode written by
original series veteran, D.C. Fontana. |

The story of this episode bears a vague resemblance to
the biblical story of King Solomon's decision to split a baby in half.
However, the episode mainly served as an avenue by which the writers
sought to clarify the process of Trill joinings, particularly given the
radical differences between "normal" Trill and the Trill seen in TNG's "The
Host". |

At one point Selin Peers refers to the ruling body of the
planet Trill as the Trillian government. This was the only time the term
"Trillian" was used to describe the Trill -- which, in turn, could be
viewed as an alternative name, such as "Vulcanian" was to Vulcan. |
