ODO'S QUARTERS At the moment, Odo's Quarters are in a state of transition. The humanoid style furniture (bed, chairs, etc.) have been pushed off to the side, waiting to be sent back to storage. Odo's changeling paraphernalia (the jungle gym, the sculptures, the various surfaces) are in piles in the middle of the room, waiting to be reassembled. Odo surveys the jumbled furniture as KIRA ENTERS from the corridor with another armful of Odo's old changeling accoutrements. KIRA Where do you want me to put this? ODO Wherever you can find room. Kira puts down the box of stuff next to a pile of furniture and other junk. KIRA I bet you can't wait to get all this put together so you can start shape-shifting around the room again. ODO I suppose. Though I did enjoy sleeping in a bed. KIRA Nothing's stopping you from sleeping in a bed if you want to. ODO Except that now when I'm asleep I have a tendency to revert to my gelatinous state and slide onto the floor. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - TEASER 2. 2 CONTINUED: ODO (Cont'd) (his decision is final) The bed goes. I'm a changeling, not a solid. No sense in pretending otherwise. Kira looks at the remains of Odo's humanoid lifestyle. KIRA Then I guess we can send all this to storage. Kira picks up some PADDS that are lying in the pile. KIRA What about these PADDS? Before Odo can answer, the title of one of the PADDS catches Kira's eye. KIRA (reading it) Finding and Winning your Perfect Mate by Doctor Jennings Rain? ODO I'll take that. Kira gives Odo the PADD, but they're both clearly a little embarrassed and uncomfortable. ODO (feels he owes her an explanation) I thought I was going to be a humanoid for the rest of my life, and... there were things... KIRA You don't have to explain, Odo. ODO I only read the first three chapters. KIRA Maybe you should finish it. ODO Why waste my time? Romance is for solids. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - TEASER 3. 2 CONTINUED: (2) KIRA You are solid... at least eighteen hours a day. I'm sure there're plenty of woman on this station who'd be interested in you if you gave them half a chance. Odo's growing increasingly uncomfortable with the direction of this conversation. ODO I'll keep that in mind, major. (changing the subject) Right now I'd be satisfied just getting this room in order. But before they can get back to work, the COM line activates. DAX'S COM VOICE Dax to Kira and Odo. ODO Yes, commander. DAX'S COM VOICE There's something we'd like you to look at in ops. KIRA On our way. She EXITS. Odo looks at the PADD, which is still in his hands, sighs, like it's a problem he will eventually have to deal with, and puts it aside with the things he's keeping. He EXITS. 3 INT. OPS Kira and Odo ENTER to find SISKO and DAX at Dax's station, looking at a readout. SISKO (to Kira and Odo) One of our listening posts in the Gamma Quadrant picked this up a few minutes ago. Kira and Odo join them at Dax's station. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - TEASER 4. 4 NEW ANGLE To include the display, which shows a random assortment of binary code. Running below the binary numbers is a string of Cardassian symbols. DAX It looks like a Cardassian military code, but the computer doesn't recognize it. Kira and Odo both study it for a second. KIRA It's Cardassian all right. But I didn't think there were any Cardassians in the Gamma Quadrant. SISKO None that we know of. Odo punches in a few commands. The stream of numbers and symbols doesn't change. Odo tries again, without success. He looks frustrated. ODO It's not Elgol-red. Or Fifth Order Military Encryption. KIRA Try Courier Code Five-Nine. Odo punches in the commands. Still nothing. ODO Strange. Most Cardassian codes use a recursive encryption algorithm, but this has a completely different coding system. KIRA Bajoran Intelligence has had plenty of experience breaking Cardassian codes. Maybe we should send it to them. DAX We did. As soon as it came in. We still haven't heard from them. ODO It might take some time. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - TEASER 4A. 4 CONTINUED: SISKO How much time? If someone's sending coded Cardassian messages from the Gamma Quadrant, I want to know what they're saying. Now. Odo knows there's another option although he's reluctant to use it. ODO We do have an expert in Cardassian codes living on the station. Sisko nods. He's not excited by his options either. SISKO Dax, get me Mister Garak. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - TEASER 5. 4A EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Establishing. 5 INT. REPLIMAT GARAK sits down at a table, joining BASHIR and ZIYAL (Gul Dukat's half-Bajoran daughter). He seems very pleased with himself. GARAK Sorry for the interruption. ZIYAL How did it go? GARAK I'm afraid I disappointed them. I think they were hoping that message they picked up would contain the key to defeating the Dominion. You should've seen the looks on their faces when I told them it was a five-year old planetary survey report. BASHIR (surprised) A planetary survey report. GARAK That's the look exactly. BASHIR I'd've thought you'd be a little disappointed, too. (off Garak's questioning look) It could have been sent by survivors from the Cardassian fleet that was lost in the Gamma Quadrant. GARAK (dismissive) Oh, I've given up hope of ever finding any trace of them. ZIYAL Really? I never saw you as the giving up type. From Bashir's expression, neither has he. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - TEASER 5A-6. 5 CONTINUED: GARAK (to Ziyal) There comes a time when you have to face reality, my dear. Those people are gone and they're never coming back. (a beat) Well, my young friends, I could sit here and chat all day, but I have dresses to make, pants to mend... It's a full life, if a trifle... banal. Garak gets up to take his leave. GARAK Tell Captain Sisko I'd be happy to decode any Cardassian laundry lists that come across his desk. Ziyal holds out her hand to Garak, who presses his palm against hers. It's the Cardassian equivalent of a kiss on the cheek. GARAK My dear. He EXITS. 6 CLOSE ON BASHIR AND ZIYAL As they watch him go. Bashir looks thoughtful, as if not totally satisfied by his conversation with Garak. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - TEASER 7. 6 CONTINUED: ZIYAL My father would be furious if he heard me say this, but there's something about Garak that I find fascinating. BASHIR He has his moments. CUT TO: 7 INT. AIRLOCK CORRIDOR Garak, carrying a duffel bag and dressed to travel, walks briskly toward the airlock, a man on a definite mission. Looking both ways to see that the coast is clear, he hits the airlock control and ENTERS... 8 INT. AIRLOCK Garak walks quickly to the door of a runabout which is docked at the end of the airlock. He takes a device out of his coat pocket and places it over the keypad. He punches in a code, the device lights up, and there's the sound of the runabout door unlocking. Garak smiles, removes the device and the runabout door opens. 9 INT. RUNABOUT Garak comes in and heads for the cockpit, only to find Bashir sitting in the pilot's seat, aiming a phaser at him. BASHIR Going somewhere? And as Garak reacts to this unexpected development, we... FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT ONE 8. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes) 10 INT. RUNABOUT As before. Bashir still has his phaser trained on Garak. GARAK Doctor, I really must remember to stop underestimating you. How did you know? BASHIR You mean that you were lying about the contents of the message? (smiles) You said you'd given up on finding Cardassian survivors in the Gamma Quadrant. But Ziyal's right. You're not the giving up sort. Garak smiles. Bashir has him there. GARAK Very good, doctor. You've come a long way from the naive young man I met five years ago. You've become distrustful and suspicious. It suits you. BASHIR I had a good teacher. (a beat) what did the message really say? GARAK It was a call for help. From Enabran Tain. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT ONE 9. 10 CONTINUED: Bashir looks surprised. BASHIR Tain? But you told me you saw the Dominion blow up his ship. GARAK I did. But Enabran Tain was the head of the Obsidian order for twenty years. If he survived that, he can survive anything. (a beat) I have to find him, doctor. I owe it to him. BASHIR You don't owe Tain anything. He had you exiled from Cardassia. GARAK Yes, but aside from that, we were very close. He was... my mentor. And I'm not going to turn my back on him. (a beat) If it'll make you feel better, come with me. All you have to do is make up some excuse for taking the runabout and we could leave immediately. Bashir thinks it over. BASHIR Let me get this straight. You're asking me to lie to my commanding officer, violate Starfleet regulations, and go off with you on a mission that will probably get us both killed? GARAK (takes a seat) I'm ready when you are. BASHIR In that case, let's go... (raises the phaser) to Captain's Sisko's office. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT ONE 10. 10 CONTINUED: (2) Now Garak does look disappointed. 11 INT. CAPTAIN'S OFFICE Sisko's just heard Bashir and Garak's story and is thinking it over. SISKO How do you know the message isn't a fake? That it was really sent by Tain? GARAK The code sequence was personally designed by Tain and myself. No one else knows it. Somehow he got that message out. Now I have to follow it back to its source. SISKO Did the message contain any coordinates? GARAK No. Most of it was identification code. The rest was just one word... "alive," repeated over and over again. So it should be easy enough to triangulate the source. (a beat) Captain, Tain might not be alone. There could be others. Troops from the Cardassian/Romulan fleet, survivors from the Dominion attack on New Bajor, even crewmen from the Federation ships that've disappeared in the Gamma Quadrant. This is a mission of mercy. You can't ignore it. Sisko thinks this over. SISKO I'm still not totally convinced the message is genuine. (comes to decision) But I suppose there's only one way to find out. Bashir knows what Sisko's thinking and doesn't like it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT ONE 11 CONTINUED: BASHIR Captain, you can't let him go. It is too dangerous. GARAK Your concern is touching, Doctor. But I assure you, I can take care of myself. SISKO Maybe you can. But you're still not going alone. Garak turns to Bashir and smiles. GARAK Doctor, I think you've just volunteered. SISKO Doctor Bashir isn't going anywhere. I have someone else in mind. And off Bashir and Garak's surprised reaction, we... CUT TO: 12 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Close on the Defiant in port. 13 INT. DEFIANT - WORF'S QUARTERS On WORF, who's sharpening his mek'leth. Dax is pacing around the cabin, clearly not happy with Worf. DAX I don't know what makes me more angry... that you agreed to go into the Gamma Quadrant with Garak... or that I had to find it out from Sisko. WORF I was going to tell you. DAX When? On your way out the airlock? DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT ONE 12. 13 CONTINUED: WORF A Klingon warrior does not have to explain why he chooses to face danger. Not even to his par'machkai. DAX So in other words, you were afraid I'd make a scene. That I'd embarrass you. Maybe even cry. WORF You are capable of anything. DAX Don't worry, Worf. I won't be shedding any tears over you. WORF (hopeful) Then you came to wish me a good death in battle? DAX No. I came for... Dax looks around, opens a drawer at the desk, and takes out a case of isolinear rods. DAX These. WORF My Klingon operas? DAX You're not going to be using them for the next few days. Someone might as well enjoy them. Worf doesn't look happy. DAX What? Something wrong? WORF You have a tendency to misplace things. DAX And you're afraid I'm going to lose your precious operas? DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT ONE 13. 13 CONTINUED: (2) WORF Yes. DAX It's a distinct possibility. So if I were you, I'd hurry back. (smiles) That is, if you want to keep your collection intact. Dax leans over and gives Worf a fierce kiss good-bye. DAX Have a glorious death. Or don't. It's up to you. She EXITS. We hold on Worf, and a smile of admiration crosses his face. She's a good woman. CUT TO: 14 thru OMITTED 15 DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT ONE 14. 16 INT. QUARK'S Garak and Ziyal are seated on the second level. Ziyal is worried. ZIYAL The Gamma Quadrant? You can't go to the Gamma Quadrant. GARAK I can. And I will. I have to. This doesn't make Ziyal feel any better. ZIYAL But if something were to happen to you, I don't know what I'd do. GARAK Oh, I'm sure you could find someone else to eat your meals with. Not that you'll have to. I fully intend to return. ZIYAL It's not just the meals. GARAK I know. I'm the only other Cardassian on the station. ZIYAL It's not that, either. And you know it. It's just that you're intelligent and cultured... and kind. GARAK My dear, you're young, so I realize you're a poor judge of character. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT ONE 15. 16 CONTINUED: ZIYAL Why do you always make fun of my feelings for you? GARAK Perhaps because I find them a touch... misguided. ZIYAL (hurt) If that's what you think, why do you spend so much time with me? Garak sighs. He's not used to talking about his real feelings about anything, but he really doesn't have the heart to lie to this girl. GARAK Because I'm exiled, alone and a long way from home. And when I'm with you... it doesn't seem so bad. ZIYAL I'm glad I can help. Garak is touched by her concern. GARAK Ziyal, no matter what happens, no matter how bleak things might look, I promise you, I will come back. I give you my word. Ziyal smiles. She reaches out and covers his hand with hers. ZIYAL I believe you. DUKAT (O.S.) Take your hands off her. Garak and Ziyal turn in their seats, but before Garak can even see what's happening... 17 NEW ANGLE He's lifted out of his seat and shoved against the second floor railing by Gul DUKAT. Dukat pushes Garak back so he's bent over the railing and grabs him by the throat. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT ONE 15A. 17 CONTINUED: DUKAT Touch my daughter again, and I'll kill you. Ziyal rushes to Garak's defense. ZIYAL Father, let him go. Please. Garak smiles. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT ONE 17. 17 CONTINUED: (3) GARAK (to Dukat) You do have a lovely daughter. She must take after her mother. And with a final smile for Ziyal, Garak turns his back and EXITS. 18 CLOSE ON ZIYAL AND DUKAT As Dukat looks down at his daughter with very mixed emotions. ZIYAL You're wrong about Garak, Father. He's a good man. DUKAT You have no idea how it pains me to hear you say that. (a beat) It's good to see you again, Ziyal. ZIYAL It's good to see you, too, Father. She hugs him. ZIYAL But what are you doing on the station? DUKAT I had a skirmish with a Klingon battle cruiser. My ship was damaged, so I came here for repairs... and to spend some time with you. (re: Garak) I can see we have a lot to talk about. Ziyal looks resigned to hearing a lecture about Garak. CUT TO: 19 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Dukat's Bird of Prey is still docked at the station. 20 INT. DOCKING RING CORRIDOR Sisko and Worf walk and talk. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT ONE 18-19. 20 CONTINUED: SISKO Remember, this is a reconnaissance mission. You're to avoid Dominion ships at all cost. I want you back in one piece. Sisko and Worf round the corner. They can see Garak waiting by the runabout (under the watchful eye of a Starfleet Security Officer). Worf eyes his traveling companion with distaste. WORF What about Garak? SISKO I'd like him back, too. (concerned) I don't suppose I need to tell you to keep a close eye on him? WORF At the first sign of betrayal, I will kill him. But I promise to return the body intact. SISKO I assume that's a joke. WORF We'll see. Worf walks up to Garak and the two of them EXIT into the airlock. And as the airlock door closes behind them, we... FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT TWO 20-21. ACT TWO FADE IN: 21 OMITTED 22 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) Worf and Garak's Runabout at warp. 23 INT. RUNABOUT Worf is at the controls, staring grimly at a PADD. Garak is in the co-pilot's seat, waiting for a reaction. Worf looks up in disbelief. WORF You want me to sponsor your application to Starfleet Academy? GARAK What do you think? WORF I think it's a bad idea. GARAK I'd write the actual letter. All you'd have to do is sign it. Worf hands the PADD back to Garak. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT TWO 22. 23 CONTINUED: WORF Find someone else. GARAK Why? Because I'm a Cardassian? You're a Klingon... Nog is a Ferengi. Starfleet Academy is a very accepting place. WORF (disgusted) You are not just a Cardassian. You are a spy. An assassin. A saboteur. These words hit home to Garak. He looks both embarrassed and hurt by the carnage he's caused. GARAK I know I've done some unfortunate things in the past. And I regret them. That's why I want to join Starfleet. Why I need to join Starfleet. I'm looking for a fresh start... a way to make up for all the damage I've done. To prove to myself that I can be better than I am. But I need your help... your support to start me on my way... to redemption. Worf feels like he's on the spot. His instincts tell him to say no, but his Federation training requires that he at least consider Garak's request. WORF If that's how you feel, I will... consider your request. GARAK That's all I ask. (a beat) Personally, I think I could be quite an asset to Starfleet. With my extensive experience I should be able to skip the lower ranks entirely and begin my career as a Commander. Maybe you should suggest that in your letter... tell them you'd be honored to serve under me. Worf realizes this is all an elaborate joke on Garak's part. He grabs Garak by the collar. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT TWO 23. 23 CONTINUED: (2) WORF Do not play games with me. You have no desire to join Starfleet, do you? Garak smiles, ending his little charade. GARAK No. I'm afraid I don't. Worf pushes Garak away. WORF Then what is the point of this deception? GARAK Lying is a skill like any other. If you want to maintain a level of excellence, you have to practice constantly. WORF Practice on someone else. GARAK Mister Worf, you are no fun at all. WORF Good. Garak rolls his eyes. This is shaping up to be a long trip. 24 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Re-establishing. 25 INT. REPLIMAT Kira is drinking coffee and reading a duty roster. She's trying to take a second or two to relax in the middle of a busy day. So she's not exactly thrilled to be interrupted by... DUKAT Major... You and I need to talk. Dukat takes a seat next to Kira. He's angry and not trying very hard to hide it. KIRA Dukat, I've had a busy day, and all I want to do is sit here, drink my coffee and... DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT TWO 24. 25 CONTINUED: DUKAT (interrupting) I left my daughter in your care. You promised me you would look after her. I trusted you. KIRA Listen, if this is about taking Ziyal to services at the Bajoran shrine... DUKAT I'm not talking about exposing her to your backward superstitions. She's half-Bajoran. That's part of her cultural heritage. I understand that. I'm talking about Garak. KIRA What about him? This gets Dukat even more upset. DUKAT (furious) She's in love with him. Kira knows what Dukat's upset about, but she thinks he's overreacting. KIRA I wouldn't call it love. DUKAT (pouncing) So you knew about it all along, and you've done nothing to stop it. KIRA Dukat, she was lonely. And the last time I checked, he was the only other Cardassian living on the station. DUKAT The man is a heartless, cold- blooded killer. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT TWO 24A. 25 CONTINUED: (2) KIRA Like I said, he's a Cardassian. (a beat) Your daughter is a grown woman, capable of making her own decisions. Now, I'm not very fond of Garak. I may even think their friendship is a mistake... but the way I see it, that's her prerogative. DUKAT You did this on purpose, didn't you? KIRA Did what? DUKAT Allowed my daughter to associate with a man you knew was my enemy. Stood by while he whispered poison in her ear. And all under the guise of doing me a favor. KIRA Let's get one thing straight, Dukat. I didn't bring Ziyal to the station for you. I did it for her. I knew she'd be a lot better off here than as a soldier fighting in your private little war with the Klingons. But Dukat will hear none of it. DUKAT Save your excuses, major. You've betrayed me. And I promise I won't forget it. KIRA (sarcastic) If that's a threat, I'm not impressed. DUKAT There was a time when Bajorans took Cardassian threats very seriously. KIRA Not anymore. Dukat glares at her. This isn't over. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT TWO 25. 25 CONTINUED: (3) DUKAT Good day, major. KIRA Good day. 26 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) The Runabout at warp. 27 INT. RUNABOUT Worf is at the controls. Garak comes out of the back. He's used the replicator and is sipping at a cup of tea. GARAK I don't see why these runabout replicators can't provide a more varied menu. (shuddering) I would like to get my hands on this fellow Earl Grey and tell him a thing or two about tea leaves. Suddenly the sound of the engines change and Garak looks up at the window. GARAK We've dropped out of warp. Is something wrong? Garak hurries over to the co-pilot's seat. WORF We can go no further. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT TWO 26. 27 CONTINUED: GARAK What do you mean? WORF My readings show that the source of the coded signal is deep in Dominion space. I have strict orders to avoid unnecessary risk. We must turn back. GARAK Believe me, I have no desire to take an "unnecessary risk." (checking his panel) But according to our sensors, there's no sign of Jem'Hadar warships in this area. WORF True. But the likelihood of contact will increase from this point on. And my orders were very clear. GARAK But we've come all this way. To turn around without an answer... it seems so... (searches for the right phrase) Un-Klingon. WORF I am also a Starfleet officer. Garak studies the starchart, desperately looking for a compromise. GARAK What if we go through this nebula? We could use it to avoid detection and get light years closer to the source of the transmission. WORF Our shields would be useless inside that nebula. GARAK But so would Jem'Hadar sensors. Garak tries his best to win Worf over. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... " - REV. 12/04/96 - ACT TWO 27. 27 CONTINUED: (2) GARAK The answer is out there, commander. We just have to have the courage to find it. Remember, it's not just Tain we're looking for. The Maryland, the Proxima, the Sarajevo... Starfleet ships that have been missing in the Gamma Quadrant for years. And their crews, brave soldiers... warriors of the Federation... unaccounted for. We owe it to them to do everything in our power to find them... and bring them home. (a clincher) It is the honorable thing to do. Worf glares at Garak's blatant attempt at manipulation. WORF You use that word, but you have no idea what it means. GARAK Maybe not. But you do. Worf can't deny that. After another beat, he finally gives in. WORF (reluctantly) Setting course for the nebula. Garak smiles, pleased that he's won this round. 28 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) The Runabout entering a nebula. (Stock from "VORTEX?") 29 OMITTED 30 INT. GARAK There're four more Jem'Hadar ships in close pursuit, and at least two ahead of us on an intercept course. Worf hits a series of commands. WORF We have to warn the station. There is only one reason for the Dominion to hide such a large fleet this close to the wormhole. GARAK You think they're planning to attack the Alpha Quadrant. WORF I am certain of it. Their ship is rocked again as Worf hits some controls. GARAK (off readouts) Your message is transmitting, but there's no way to know if it's getting through all this interference. It serves as the central area/prison yard for a Dominion Internment Center. The Dominion isn't big on prisons, or on taking prisoners for that matter. This facility is for an elite group of P.O.W.s, people who the Dominion is especially curious about. And Worf and Garak certainly qualify. They and three Jem'Hadar guards MATERIALIZE with a Dominion transport effect in the middle of the yard. They're immediately met by FIRST IKAT'IKA, an imposing Jem'Hadar soldier. He's been around long enough to be consider an honored elder, which means he's got eighteen years of military experience, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. GARAK Ah, good. You look like the man in charge. I was just trying to explain to your colleagues here that this is all an unfortunate misunderstanding. Ikat'ika reaches out an grabs Garak's chest in a vise-grip, squeezing the life out of him. IKAT'IKA Cardassians are all alike. You talk too much. Worf instinctively reaches out and grabs hold of Ikat'ika's wrist. WORF Let him go. Worf tries to pry Ikat'ika loose, but fails. One of the guards places a gun to the base of Worf's neck. IKAT'IKA I give the orders here. Release me or die. Worf considers it. GARAK, (pleading, barely able to talk) Worf. Do as he says. Worf thinks it over for a beat, then coolly releases Ikat'ika's arm. Right now, the area contains a half dozen Jem'Hadar soldiers watching two battling combatants. It's a Jem'Hadar fighting a Klingon. The fighting area is a circle with two posts. Whenever one of the combatants is knocked down, he must touch one of the posts or forfeit the fight. Worf and Garak step closer. It's clear that the Klingon is losing. The Klingon falls to his knees. Martok is laid out and no matter how hard he tries, he can't get back to his feet. The Jem'Hadar starts to go for Martok, but Ikat'ika holds up a hand. IKAT'IKA Enough. It's over. The Jem'Hadar combatant nods in acknowledgement and he and the other soldiers disperse. Ikat'ika turns to Worf. IKAT'IKA But for you, it's just beginning. With that, Ikat'ika follows his soldiers as they walk away. 54 thru OMITTED 55 56 NEW ANGLE As Worf and Garak go to Martok's aid. Worf bends down to check on the battered Klingon. WORF General... Martok looks at Worf, then Garak. MARTOK If you are Worf... then you must be Garak. He said you would come. Garak reacts. He suspects he knows who Martok is talking about. 57 INT. BARRACKS - NIGHT These are the prison quarters. They're very clean and very austere. Like much of what we've seen from the Dominion, form equals function, and nothing is wasted. The walls are riveted steel and the only furniture are metal bunks for the prisoners. There're only four prisoners present; two are Romulans and one is a Breen, dressed in his cold-weather gear. The fourth lies unconscious on a bunk at the far side of the room. Garak walks over to the far bunk with Worf and Martok trailing behind him. We see now that the unconscious form is ENABRAN TAIN. Living on that station has dulled your wits. Tain clearly has nothing further to say to Garak. GARAK That's it? After I've come all this way? After all I've been through? That's all you have to say to me? TAIN What do you want me to say? GARAK I want you to say "Thank you, Elim. Your loyalty is most gratifying. I knew I could count on you." SISKO A Dominion invasion of the Alpha Quadrant will affect Cardassia every bit as much as it will affect us. (a beat) Besides, we need all the help we can get. The Dominion picked a perfect time to invade. The Cardassian fleet is in shambles, the Romulans aren't much better off, and between the Klingon War and the latest Borg attack, Starfleet's spread pretty thin. DEEP SPACE NINE: "In Purgatory's... KIRA But Bajor will be cut off from the Celestial Temple. SISKO History's shown that when the Prophets want to communicate with Bajor, they find a way. (a beat) Besides, it's either that or Bajor becomes the Dominion's first target. Kira nods. She's not happy about it, but she knows that Sisko wouldn't be taking this action unless it was absolutely necessary. O'BRIEN We'll have to remodulate the deflector grid frequencies and rig a phase-conjugate graviton beam. SISKO You and Dax start work immediately. Dax nods. But something's bothering her. Martok is telling Worf and Garak how they got the message out. MARTOK Before this asteroid was converted into a prison, the Dominion used to mine ultritium here. There was no dome and each of these barracks had its own life support system embedded in the walls. GARAK And Tain was able to modify the life support system to create a subspace transmitter? MARTOK (nods) There's a crawl space just behind those panels. He'd spend hours in there, working. Every day for months on end. Cardassians. They're a clever people. Especially that one. (a beat) But within a few days, at best, he will be dead. Martok and Worf look over at Tain. WORF Then it is up to us to be clever. Just then, one of the ROMULANS we had seen earlier comes running into the barracks. ROMULAN They're releasing him from isolation. MARTOK Good. WORF Who? MARTOK A friend. BASHIR Frankly, I'm glad you came. (smiles) Misery loves company. But Garak isn't in the mood for jokes. GARAK My whole life, I've done nothing but try to please that man. I let him mold me, turn me into a mirror image of himself. And how did he repay me? With exile. But I forgave him. And now, here at the end, I thought maybe, just maybe, he could forgive me. BASHIR From what I've seen of him in the last month, he doesn't come across as the forgiving type. GARAK I was a fool. Let this be a lesson to you, doctor... perhaps the most valuable I can teach you... Sentiment is the greatest weakness of all. BASHIR If that's true, then it's a lesson I don't want to learn.
