HISTORY & TECHNOLOGY

The Romulan D'deridex-class Warbird is also known to Starfleet as a B-Type Warbird. It is the standard Romulan battle cruiser throughout the latter half of the 24th century. The Warbird is much larger than Starfleet's Galaxy-class starships, and is only a fraction smaller than the Dominion's Jem'Hadar Battleship. It can reach high warp speeds, and is equipped with disruptor cannons and a cloaking device. The design of the Warbird benefits from technology that the Romulans gained during an alliance with the Klingon Empire in the late 23rd century.

Unlike Starfleet ships, which are powered by the interaction between matter and antimatter, the power source of the Warbird is a forced quantum singularity, literally a miniature black hole. Once the quantum singularity has been activated, it cannot be shut down. The power signature of Romulan engines is compatible with Federation warp cores.

While useful for avoiding one's enemies, the cloaking device is not infallible. Even a cloaked ship may be detected under certain conditions, for instance if it goes to warp in a radiation field. While the Warbird is cloaked, the shields cannot be used and weapons cannot be fired, although the disruptors may be charged. While cloaked, a Warbird monitors all of its electromagnetic emissions to make sure nothing gives away its position. This means that when a Warbird is under cloak it cannot communicate with other vessels.

DESIGN & LAYOUT

Inside the Warbird, the walls and floor are a light brown colour; shades vary from chocolate to pumpkin orange. Doors and wall supports are a muted green, and vertical green glowing strips adorn the walls. Corridors are punctuated by vertical lines of blue light. Doorways are D-shaped, and feature a single sliding door.

The Engineering room is circular, with consoles around the perimeter of the room and on a central column. The engine itself is housed in a chamber just off the engineering room. Engineering personnel stand at their duty stations.

Officers aboard the Warbird dine at a single table in a wardroom just off the bridge. The chairs have complex backs that appear to be designed for artistic appreciation rather than for comfort.

BRIDGE

The latest Warbird bridge - seen during the combined Romulan/Cardassian assault on the Founders' homeworld in 2371 - retains the basic layout of a roughly circular chamber, with outward-facing operational stations situated around the central command position. The room is split into two tiers of roughly equal area, with the aft level accessed by two steps leading up from the forward level. The command chair is on a podium that protrudes out into the forward section while remaining at the higher level of the aft. This appears to be designed to accentuate the commander's authority, though no displays or controls feed to the position.
