Jaheel's Ship

TREKCORE > DEEP SPACE NINE > SHIPS & STATIONS > Jaheel's Ship

A small freighter, under the command of Captain Jaheel, suffers an ignominious fate when its commander attempts to break a quarantine on Deep Space Nine.

DETAILS

The compact cargo ship, under the command of civilian operator Captain Jaheel, is encountered by Starfleet on Stardate 46423. Midway through a freight run from Tamen to Largo V, Jaheel and his crew take a layover at Deep Space Nine. Their freighter is carrying a highly perishable shipment of Tamen Sahsheer, a form of fast-growing crystal from the planet Kelva, in the Andromeda galaxy.

Slightly shorter in length than a Defiant-class starship, Jaheel's transport vessel has a squat, reptilian appearance. A wedge-shaped forward module is decorated with blue trim features, nose-mounted docking clamps, and an airlock. The raised section on this unit is most likely the location of the craft's bridge.

Jaheel's bridge is compact, almost cockpit-like, and is illuminated within by bright blue, yellow and pink displays. The captain's chair is situated in front of one of the main bridge's control stations. The midsection of the ship is dominated by two large rectangular containers, which may be some sort of cargo pod. The style of these units suggests that it may be possible for Jaheel's crew to detach the pods, to assist with loading and unloading large cargo assignments.

At the rear of the ship, the main power core is protected from the rest of the craft's interior by a series of isolation plates. The energy generated by this system can be seen from the exterior as a red glow emanating from the main interstellar drive's intercoolers. Other systems aboard Jaheel's ship includes a complex, but redundant, communications system, a basic fire-control system, and a series of fuel cells, that act as a power source for many of its flight functions.

Jaheel brings his ship to Deep Space Nine to undergo repairs, and moors the craft at Docking Port 5, one of the main airlocks on the station's Docking Ring. When DS9 falls victim to an aphasic virus, triggered by a dormant Bajoran weapon left over from the Cardassian occupation, Captain Jaheel makes a formal request to Commander Sisko for permission to leave the station: he claims his cargo will spoil unless he reaches his destination within the next few days.

Sisko refuses to allow Jaheel to leave, as he and his crew may have already been infected by the virus, but Jaheel attempts to depart anyway, damaging the mooring clamps holding his ship to the station in the process. This rash action causes a rupture in the ship's power core that will destroy the freighter in short order. Sisko's decision to blow open the jammed clamps saves the Docking Ring from destruction, and Odo manages to save Jaheel's life, but nothing can be done to prevent the destruction of his ship and cargo.
