Not much is known of the Breen or their warships as indicated above. First encountered by Starfleet officers Worf and Ezri Dax when they were captured by the Breen in mid-2375 ('Penumbra'). The Breen took their Starfleet captives to a meeting at Cardassia Prime where they signed an alliance with the Dominion, joining the war against the Federation and its allies (''Til Death Do Us Part').

Starfleet came up against the Breen warships during the Second Battle of Chin'toka ('The Changing Face of Evil'), when the Dominion successfully took back that system from the Federation and its allies. Sent into battle first, the Breen ships turned their energy dampening weapons upon the combined Federation, Romulan and Klingon task force, disabling their engines, weapons and shields - leaving the fleet defenceless. The rest of the Dominion forces was then able to destroy the fleet, including the U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205, with little effort. A single Klingon Bird-of-Prey was left unaffected by the weapon due to modifications made to it before the battle by that ship's chief engineer; these modifications were later made to all ships in the Klingon fleet, allowing the Klingons to continue working against the Dominion forces.

After seeing the effectiveness of the Breen weapons, all Dominion ships were outfitted with the Energy Dampening Weapons. One of the Dominion fighters fitted with the new weapon was later captured by Colonel Kira, Odo, Garak, and the 'Cardassian Resistance' lead by Gul Damar, and taken back to the Federation so that both the Federation and Romulans can develop a defence against them. Several Breen frigates are present when the 'Alpha Quadrant Alliance' forces surround Cardassia Prime in the lead-up to the end of the war. These vessels were targeted by the Cardassian ships who had joined the Alliance ships when their homeworld's cities were being levelled by the Dominion, in response to attacks against them by the Cardassian population.
