HISTORY & DETAILS

The Vor'cha-class Attack Cruiser is one of the largest and most powerful ships in the Klingon Defence Force. At more than 480 meters long, it dwarfs the K't'inga-class Battle Cruiser and the K'Vort and B'rel-class Birds-of-Prey. Because of their heavy weaponry, Vor'cha-class ships often form an important part of large fleets. Several ships of this class are in the armada which attacks Deep Space Nine in 2372. Despite their massive armaments, Vor'cha-class vessels such as the Toh'Kaht are also used on biosurvey missions, often as part of the Klingon effort to find new worlds that are suitable for colonization.

DESIGN - WEAPONS

Vor'cha-class ships follow classic Klingon design principles, with a forward module separated from the main body of the ship by an extended neck. The main body forms a roughly triangular shape, with the warp nacelles at the outer edges. The ship can be fitted with different forward modules, depending on the requirements of a specific mission. On standard missions the ships is fitted with a massive forward-mounted disruptor cannon; a single blast from the disruptor is normally powerful enough to completely destroy an unprotected ship, and repeated fire can break through even the most powerful shields and ablative armour. In situations where speed is more important than firepower, the disruptor cannon can be ejected. The bridge is immediately behind the cannon in an elevated module that always remains with the ship. If necessary, the disruptor cannon can be replaced with other kinds of hardware which are suited to different kinds of missions.

Vor'cha-class ships are also equipped with several other, smaller disruptor cannons, making vessels of this class among the most heavily armed ships in service. Propulsion is provided by matter/antimatter engines and the ship is capable of achieving speeds in excess of warp 9. The ships has powerful defensive deflector shields and, like most Klingon fighting ships, is fitted with a cloaking device. As is usual, the ship cannot fire its disruptors or use its deflector shields while it is cloaked.

BRIDGE LAYOUT

The interior of the vessel makes few, if any concessions to comfort. The bridge is extremely spartan, with the commanding officer sitting in the centre of the room on a raised platform. The main viewer is directly in front of him, and his officers stand at their stations in a horseshoe formation behind him. The communications station is slightly behind the commander on his left; the engineering on a similar position on the right. The defensive systems station where an officer monitors and controls the shields and cloaking device, is also on the commander's right, but is further forward so that it is almost parallel with him. The weapons systems are located on a platform immediately behind the commander's chair, thus ensuing that the weapons officer has an unobstructed view of the main viewer.

By 2372, the Vor'cha class has been superseded by the Voodieh class, and the Bortas is replaced as the Klingon flagship by the Negh'Var. However, Vor'cha-class cruisers are still an integral part of the Klingon Defence Force and, like the K't'inga-class Battle Cruisers before them, will almost certainly remain in service for many years to come.
