PRODUCTION
BASE: Qo'noS Orbital Factory Base
In the early 2370's, the Klingon Empire unveils a new class of warship for its fleet. The first of these vessels to enter service is the I.K.S. Negh'Var, the flagship of the Klingon Defence Force. The largest ship in the Klingon fleet is the Negh'Var-class Attack Cruiser. At a huge 685.8 meters in length, it is comparable to a Federation Sovereign-class starship, and approximately three times the size of the older D-7 and K't'inga-class Battle Cruisers. Like most Klingon vessels, Negh'Var-class starships follow the traditional design of an avian hull form with an extended neck ending in a command and weapons pod. Warp nacelles are attached to the wings. The Negh'Var-class traces a clear line of design evolution from the earliest D-7 Battle Cruisers, and its hull structure and skin share many similarities with the smaller Vor'cha class. Standard combat systems include photon torpedo launchers and phase disruptor cannon arrays. Given that the flagship is often used as the personal transport of the Klingon chancellor, it is likely that the I.K.S. Negh'Var is fitted with a cloaking device, though it is yet to be seen in operation. The bulk of Negh'Var-class vessels makes them somewhat sluggish when facing smaller, more manoeuvrable craft, but this is balanced by the application of powerful deflector shield systems and a fuselage protected by thick plates of ablative armour. In addition, the Negh'Var-class weapons have enough power to at least disable any smaller craft. The first major engagement seen by the Negh'Var is the Klingon Empire's 2372 invasion of Cardassian space. On Stardate 49011, General Martok musters his fleet and enters the Bajoran sector, intent on penetrating Cardassian borders in an invasion attack. The intervention of Starfleet's Captain Sisko leads the chancellor to turn his fleet's weapons on Deep Space Nine, and the station takes a severe pounding. The decision by Gowron to break off the attack is fortunate indeed for the crew of DS9, as the Negh'Var's impressive arsenal is a force to be reckoned with.
