TREKCORE > DEEP SPACE NINE > SHIPS & STATIONS > Federation Galaxy-Class Starship

The U.S.S. Galaxy NCC-70637 is a prototype vessel that inspires a whole series of Galaxy-class starships, among them the fifth incarnation of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The U.S.S. Galaxy incorporates classic Starfleet design features, and possesses one of the 24th century's fastest and most powerful warp engines.

DESIGN INFORMATION

In the late 24th century, Starfleet initiates a Galaxy-class Starship Development Project that results in construction of some of the most powerful starships in the Federation. The class is named after the prototype ship, U.S.S. Galaxy NCC-70637, and spawns a series of deep space exploration vessels.

The U.S.S. Galaxy introduces a slightly sleeker, more streamlined version of a classic Starfleet design. The saucer section is separated slightly above the main body on a graceful neck, while the stardrive section features the traditional parallel positioned twin warp nacelle design.

The Galaxy-class starships are designed and constructed at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars. Among the many scientists working on the project is Dr. Leah Brahms, from the Theoretical Propulsion Group, who contributes greatly to the development of the warp propulsion systems.

The U.S.S. Galaxy is also the prototype to the fifth starship to bear the name Enterprise, which becomes Starfleet's flagship - the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D. Other starships in this class include the U.S.S. Yamato NCC-71807, which is destroyed in 2365 by Iconian weaponry; the U.S.S. Odyssey NCC-71832, destroyed in 2370 by the Jem'Hadar; and the U.S.S. Venture NCC-71854, which leads a relief force to Deep Space Nine in 2372. The U.S.S. Enterprise is destroyed in 2371 when it is forced to crash-land on Veridian III.

An alternate future encountered by the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 in 2375 suggests that at least one Galaxy-class vessel - the U.S.S. Challenger - may still be in service in 2390.
