Attack Fighter

HISTORY & DETAILS
The
Starfleet Attack Fighter is one of the Federation's most
durable and adaptive combat craft. It is designed solely for
tactical missions, with little regard in its construction for
diplomatic or other non-combat functions. The ship is first
brought into service in 2369 to 2370. The basic 30-meter long
design is equipped with warp and impulse propulsion, as well
as thrusters for delicate and precise manoeuvres. The
equivalent of warp nacelles are wrapped around the craft's
squarish main body, visible only as familiar blue grilles, and
twin impulse engines arranged on the aft roll bar.

While the
Starfleet Attack Fighter is only a cramped two-seater vessel,
it is heavily armed. It has a forward phaser emitter, fitted
on its underside just below the nose, and each wing carries
three launch tubes. In recent years, the launchers have been
easily upgraded to handle quantum warheads instead of older
photon torpedo loads.
By the time of the
Dominion War, the vessel has proved to be highly adaptable
in interstellar
dogfights, and in attack raids against
Dominion/Cardassian forces. The fighters have been a key
element in fleet tactics since the start of the war, and were
instrumental in the initial attack against the
Dominion/Cardassian forces in the battle to retake Deep Space
Nine. As well as operations in the Dominion conflicts of 2374
and 2375, this ship has also operated against Starfleet
forces, as several early models were captured or otherwise
appropriated from Federation bases and shipyards by the Maquis
renegades for use against the Cardassians in the Demilitarized
Zone.
In 2370, these
craft take part in the first skirmish between the Maquis and
the Federation, with the Fighter holding its own against
Sisko's Danube-class Runabout.
