Federation Excelsior-Class Starships
The Excelsior
class has proved its value to Starfleet for nearly 100 years,
since the days of the original U.S.S. Excelsior NX-2000, used
as a testbed for the transwarp project. In the 2370s,
Excelsior-class ships are among the most common in the fleet.

HISTORY
The
U.S.S. Excelsior NX-2000 is the prototype for the Excelsior
class, one of Starfleet's most successful designs of starship;
with some modifications, this class of starship stays in
service into the 2370s. The Excelsior class features the
classic design elements of Starfleet vessels, with a saucer
section, engineering hull, and two warp nacelles supported by
pylons. It is distinguished by its elongated shape and
graceful curved bow.
After initial
tests with an experimental transwarp drive fail, the prototype
is refitted with standard warp engines and a new class of
Federation starship is born. With the new engines, the
Excelsior is capable of reaching high warp speeds. It is also
fitted with phasers and photon torpedoes, which are fired from
launchers on each side of the engineering hull.

BRIDGE
By 2290, the
original bridge module has been replaced with a unit that is
somewhat smaller and more typical of ships of the period. On
the perimeter bulkhead behind the captain is a schematic of
the ship. In the centre of the bridge ceiling is a red
hemisphere with rotating lights inside; this is part of the
Red Alert system.
The captain's
chair is isolated in the centre of the room and can spin
through 360 degrees. For the captain's convenience, a small
hexagonal table may be placed before him or her to hold
personal objects or beverages.
The main science
station is behind the captain and to the right, in nearly the
same place as it was on Constitution-class starships. The helm
and communications are also in their familiar locations
between the captain and the main viewscreen. An auxiliary
science station is far forward on the captain's right.
