HISTORY, DESIGN & USE

The type-3 Galor-class warship is the most powerful vessel in the fleet of the Cardassian Union. Galor-class vessels have been in use since the Cardassian border wars and, because the Cardassian constitution forbids the Obsidian Order from controlling military hardware, all of them are operated by the Cardassian Central Command. They are principally deployed on military patrol duty, and in situations where a dramatic and impressive show of force is necessary. They regularly operate in groups of three, though single vessels are not uncommon.

Galor-class vessels were a part of the joint Romulan Tal' Shiar / Cardassian Obsidian Order attack on the viewers homeworld that was ambushed, with all ships present being lost. Since Cardassia has joined the Dominion, massive new shipyards have been built where new Dominion vessels are constructed. However, the Cardassian Galor-class still form an important part of the combined fleet in the Alpha Quadrant.

The shape of Galor-class ships has been compared to that of a fish, since it has a head, fins, and a long tail with a shape that is reminiscent of a flipper at the stern. The ship is made up of a series of basically triangular constructions. The main body is on three distinct levels, with a separated bridge unit rising up from the bow. The front blades are equivalent to Starfleet nacelles and house the warp drive coils. Sitting atop the front blades is a smaller structure which houses the bridge.

On the main hull, just below the front blades, is a large, square, red weapons array. On the leading edge of each blade are two yellow lights, and on each trailing edge is one yellow light. The underside of the vessel has hardly any windows. The bridge is dominated by a single command chair, which is in the centre of the room. The size and positioning of the chair reflects the Cardassian partiality for impressing enemies and subordinates. Other officers stand at consoles around the perimeter of the bridge facing the walls. The main viewscreen is directly in front of the commanding officer. A large, illuminated Cardassian symbol is mounted on a grille at the back of the room.

LIMITED TECHNOLOGY

The technology used in the construction of the Galor-class ships is slightly less advanced than that employed by the Klingons or the Federation. Galor-class vessels are armed with disruptors and photon torpedoes, which are fired from the large weapons array at the front of the ship. The extreme weapons range of a Galor-class ship is 300,000 kilometres, which is somewhat less than the weapons range of Starfleet's Nebula-class starships. The weapons fire of a Galor-class ship is not sufficiently powerful to seriously harm a Starfleet vessel, such as the Galaxy-class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D, if it has raised its shields; the Federation vessel will suffer only minor hull damage, and perhaps damage to the power couplings.

Galor-class ships are protected by shields which can resist repeated phaser fire and even limited photon torpedo fire. The shields may be extended until they can protect small starships such as Starfleet's Defiant-class. However, in head-to-head combat a Galaxy-class ship is more than capable of destroying the shield generators of a Galor-class ship.

The propulsion systems on Galor-class ships use gas diffusion matter/antimatter engines and can maintain a standard cruising velocity of warp 5, and have a top speed of warp 9.6. They are not particularly manoeuvrable vessels; the Maquis regularly escape from them by taking their smaller fighters into the plasma storms in the Badlands.

SHIPS CREW

Galor-class ships carry a crew compliment of 600. Each crew is commanded by a Gul, roughly equivalent to the Starfleet grade of captain, and each Gul has at least two Glinns, or aides.

Cardassian crews sometimes wear helmets that are open at the front. They have a horizontal strap under the eyes and a vertical strap that joins in to the rest of the helmet; the strap appears to be made of leather and studded with metal.
