The explosion expands for a beat... then FREEZES, and then REVERSES. The recording FREEZES again at a point where the ship is still mostly intact, but the first SPARK of an explosion can be seen. A HAND comes into frame and points to the SPARK. KIRA'S VOICE Right there. 2 OMITTED 3 WIDER (OPTICAL) Where KIRA, DAMAR, GARAK and RUSOT are watching the monitor. The three men all lean closer to see what Kira is trying to show them. KIRA The explosion began in the intercooler matrix. (to Rusot) Your men were supposed to put the bomb here... Kira points again, at an intact part of the ship. KIRA (continuing), ... in the secondary plasma relay. RUSOT What difference does that make? The ship was still destroyed. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - TEASER 2. 3 CONTINUED: GARAK The intercooler's an obvious choice for sabotage. Their security checks could've found the bomb and disarmed it before the ship left orbit. RUSOT But they didn't find it. KIRA That's not the point. Your men ignored their instructions and their training. Rusot bristles and Damar tries to defend him. DAMAR Let's not lose sight of the fact that the mission was a success. KIRA It was a success because Jem'Hadar security slipped up and we got lucky. (to Rusot) Don't use those men again for anything except routine reconnaissance. RUSOT They're five of my best men! Bronok is one of the most experienced -- GARAK You've been told before -- no names! KIRA (strained patience) Every cell has to be insulated from the cell above and below. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - TEASER 3. 3 CONTINUED: (2) KIRA (Cont'd) If I know the names of your men and I'm captured... RUSOT I've heard the lecture. KIRA Then you shouldn't have to be reminded! Rusot takes a step toward her, but Damar puts a friendly, yet firm, hand on his shoulder. DAMAR (calm) It's been a long day. Why don't we take a break. Rusot pulls his temper back under control for Damar. RUSOT Good idea. (pointed at Kira) The air in here is getting stale. Rusot stalks away and EXITS. KIRA (to Damar) Are you going to do something about him? DAMAR I am. I'm giving him my support. Damar holds her eyes for a beat and Kira can see that this is not the time for that particular debate. KIRA All right. Damar EXITS. GARAK That does not bode well. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " -REV-03/22/99 - TEASER 4. 3 CONTINUED: (3) Kira suddenly sees something O.S. KIRA Odo! 4 ODO and two N.D. Cardassians ENTER the cavern. Although Odo walks a bit gingerly and there's a slight strain to his voice, there's no other outward sign of the Shape-shifter disease. He hands her a PADD, but she barely glances at it. ODO The raid on the Tevak shipyard was successful. I penetrated the Operations Center and disabled the security protocols. The rest of the team sabotaged the dilithium storage bunkers. An hour after we left, the entire facility was vaporized. KIRA You should get some rest... ODO That sounds good to me... KIRA (to Garak) Anyone in the bunkroom? GARAK No. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - TEASER 5. 4 CONTINUED: KIRA It's all yours. He nods and heads for a tunnel. KIRA Odo... good work. ODO Thank you. Odo EXITS. And once he's gone, we can see that Kira is really very worried about him. CUT TO: 5 INT. TUNNEL (OPTICAL) As soon as Odo is out of sight from the main cavern, he sags against the wall and we can see that he's been putting up a brave front for everyone. He's wracked with pain and on the verge of exhaustion. He MORPHS into his true form -- a desiccated and flaking body. He looks even worse than the last time we saw the Female Shape-shifter. With a final glance behind him, he heads painfully down the Tunnel. 6 INT. REBEL CAVERN Kira is looking over a PADD. KIRA Starfleet Intelligence says that a contingent of Breen engineers arrived on Kelvas Five last week. Breen engineers... (beat) Have we had any reports of Breen ships in that system? GARAK No. As a matter of fact, no Breen ships have been reported in that entire sector. KIRA So why send engineers... ? Do you have any contacts on Kelvas Five? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - TEASER 6. 6 CONTINUED: GARAK No. But I think I know who might. Excuse me. Garak EXITS. CUT TO: 7 INT. SECOND CAVERN Odo is sitting on one of the bunks, resting when Garak ENTERS. Garak stops short at the sight of the desiccated constable, surprised by his condition. Garak shifts his weight and Odo whirls around. ODO It's just like you to come sneaking in here without warning. GARAK My approach may have been quiet, but I assure you, I had no intention of "sneaking" up on you. My apologies. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - TEASER 7. 7 CONTINUED: Garak looks him over for a beat. GARAK If I may ask... ? ODO Why have I... deteriorated so rapidly? I've been assuming dozens of different shapes over the past few weeks. Changing form seems to... accelerate the progress of the disease. GARAK Perhaps you should stop. ODO And do what? Lie here and wait to die? No, thank you. I'm here to work and work is what I'm going to do. GARAK I see. (beat) I take it that Commander Kira is unaware of your... true condition? ODO That's right. And I prefer that it stay that way. GARAK I won't breath a word. ODO See that you don't. She has enough on her mind without worrying about me. And I don't want her... GARAK Pity? Odo looks away and clearly Garak is right. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - TEASER 8. 7 CONTINUED: (2) ODO Is there a reason you came in here? GARAK We have need of a contact on Kelvas Five. I remember you once mentioning that you knew several -- ODO (wants this over with) I might have a few names for you, I'll have to give it some thought. Garak turns to go, then turns back. GARAK Odo... I hope you know how much I -- ODO (brusque) If I don't want pity from the woman I love, why would I want it from you? Garak gives him a quick smile of acceptance, then EXITS. As Odo lies back down on the cot and sinks down into his own suffering... FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT ONE 9. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes.) 8 INT. INFIRMARY (VPB) Where BASHIR is working at one of the consoles. He's been at this for hours and he's dog-tired. COMPUTER VOICE DNA analysis complete. He turns around and moves to a complicated apparatus involving petri dishes, test tubes, etc. that has been quietly working away on the opposite side of the room. Bashir activates the MONITOR next to the apparatus. BASHIR Display results. A large of amount of information is displayed on the screen. Bashir reads it quickly, then reacts with disappointment. He sits down heavily, rubbing his temples. O'BRIEN ENTERS. O'BRIEN Morning. BASHIR (surprised) What time is it? O'BRIEN Oh-six-thirty. Another all-night session? (off his nod) That's four in a row. You can't keep this up. BASHIR I'm beginning to agree with you... and to add insult to injury, I'm not getting anywhere. (re: apparatus) My DNA integration theory was another blind alley. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT ONE 10. 8 CONTINUED: O'BRIEN So where does that leave you? BASHIR Back to square one. Whoever engineered this Shape-shifter disease did a good job of covering their tracks. O'BRIEN Julian, it's time to face facts. You're not going to pull a rabbit out of your medkit. The Founders themselves haven't come up with a cure -- and they have the resources of the entire Dominion at their command. (beat) Now, I know you don't want to hear this, but the only way we're going to find a cure is to track down the man -- or woman -- who created this thing in the first place. Bashir is tired and this is a very old argument by now. BASHIR Miles... O'BRIEN We have to find a way to get inside Section Thirty-one. BASHIR We tried that. We tried and we tried and all we succeeded in doing was to waste two weeks chasing phantoms from here to Vulcan. You want to face facts? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT ONE 11. 8 CONTINUED: (2) BASHIR (Cont'd) Face this fact -- Section Thirty- one has managed to stay in the shadows for three hundred years. They're not going to suddenly come scurrying into the light just because Miles O'Brien and Julian Bashir are on the case! O'BRIEN Which is why I still say we should take this to Captain Sisko and let him contact Starfleet Intelligence. Maybe they can -- BASHIR All that will do is alert Thirty- one to that fact that we're onto them. And you know what they'll do next? They'll go deeper into hiding and they'll probably send someone here to destroy what little headway I've made. No. No more cloak and dagger games. Science is the answer here. Every puzzle has a solution, every disease has a cure, it's just a matter of finding it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT ONE 12. 8 CONTINUED: (3) BASHIR (Cont'd) Now, if you'll kindly get the hell out of here, I'll get back to work. Bashir turns his back on O'Brien and begins working the computer console. O'Brien glares at him for a moment, and then EXITS. CUT TO: 9 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) A few KLINGON SHIPS are orbiting the station. 10 INT. CAPTAIN'S OFFICE GOWRON is storming around the office, while SISKO tries to rein in his own temper. GOWRON Martok's attack on Avenal Seven was a disgrace! He had the advantage of surprise -- the Dominion wasn't expecting us to take the offensive so soon after the Breen entered the war. Avenal should've been an easy victory for him, but instead he's handed us a shameful defeat! But Sisko is equally furious. SISKO General Martok and I both advised you against attacking a world so deep inside Dominion territory. He was outnumbered six to one at Avenal. GOWRON (dismissive) Six to one. A good commander finds ways to beat the odds, not hide behind them. SISKO He didn't hide behind anything! He fought harder and longer than I would've in his place. Have you read Worf's after-action report? (off PADD) DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT ONE 13. 10 CONTINUED: SISKO (Cont'd) Seven Klingon ships destroyed! Five others heavily damaged! And Martok himself is in critical condition in the Rotarran Sickbay. GOWRON (a shrug) He's expected to survive. SISKO That's not the point. This whole operation was a waste of resources, men and equipment. The blame lies with the man who ordered the attack in the first place, not with the man who tried to carry it out. The implication is clear and for a moment, Gowron's eyes flash in return. But then Gowron shifts moods quickly like the practiced politician that he is. He smiles and puts a hand on Sisko's shoulder. GOWRON That's one of the things I like about you, captain. Your loyalty to your friends. SISKO This has nothing to do with loyalty. GOWRON (patronizing) Of course not. In any case, you needn't worry. Martok's a... popular general with the troops. And that counts for something. I won't relieve him of command... yet. (beat) His flagship won't return to the station for three days. That should give me time to finalize plans for our next operation. SISKO Chancellor, we can't afford to keep wasting ships in these reckless attacks! Gowron fixes him with a steely gaze. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT ONE 14. 10 CONTINUED: (2) GOWRON (low, threatening) I like a brave man, Captain... but not a foolish one. The soldiers of the Empire are mine to command. And if I say the attacks will continue... they continue. Sisko can't challenge that and he knows it. Gowron holds his eyes for a beat, then EXITS. Sisko reacts with anger and frustration... but there's not much he can do at the moment... CUT TO: 11 EXT. CARDASSIA PRIME (MATTE SHOT) Establishing. 12 INT. DOMINION BRIEFING ROOM WEYOUN, THOT PRAN and the FEMALE SHAPE-SHIFTER are looking over information on one of the wall monitors. (No N.D.s in the b.g.) WEYOUN ... and as you can see, the Klingon raid on Avenal was easily broken up. FEMALE SHAPE-SHIFTER I am less concerned about a Klingon attack than I am about this Cardassian rebellion. We cannot fight the combined military forces of the Federation, the Klingons and the Romulans while facing a full- scale uprising behind the lines. WEYOUN I completely agree. However, the situation is well in hand. We still control the Cardassian military, while Damar has only a handful of terrorists at his disposal. I can assure you both that this "rebellion" poses no threat. Thot Pran issues a burst of STATIC. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT ONE 15. 12 CONTINUED: FEMALE SHAPE-SHIFTER (to Weyoun, re: Thot Pran) He's correct. You also assured us that Damar would never turn against the Dominion. She gives him a withering look. WEYOUN (squirming) That was an... error, to be sure. But an understandable one. No one could've foreseen that Damar would become a terrorist. The concept is antithetical to the very nature of Cardassians. They respect authority. They value the rule of law and the security of order -- which is exactly what the Dominion offers them. The Female Shape-shifter just stares at him. Thot Pran issues another BURST of STATIC. Weyoun glares at him, but the Female Shape-shifter smiles in Thot Pran's direction -- she's clearly still treating the Breen with deference. FEMALE SHAPE-SHIFTER (to Thot Pran) If our cloning facilities were operational, I would eliminate this Weyoun immediately. (to Weyoun) Damar must pay a price for his treason. Redouble your efforts to locate his wife and children. Then begin interrogating Cardassian teachers, scientists, local officials... the population has to understand in no uncertain terms that dissent will not be tolerated. (beat) I also want to begin putting Cardassian civilians in and around Dominion military installations. If Damar destroys another shipyard, he'll have to kill a good number of his countrymen in order to do it... that should help turn the people against him. WEYOUN An excellent plan. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT ONE 16. 12 CONTINUED: (2) FEMALE SHAPE-SHIFTER Your opinion was not solicited. (to Thot Pran) Thot Pran, the sooner we can regain the offensive on the front lines, the better. The installation of Breen weapons aboard Dominion ships should be accelerated. Please issue the appropriate orders to your engineers. Thot Pran nods and EXITS, leaving Weyoun alone in the room with the Female Shape-shifter. FEMALE SHAPE-SHIFTER How long until the cloning facilities are operational again? Weyoun swallows hard. WEYOUN Not for... several days... perhaps even weeks. FEMALE SHAPE-SHIFTER Keep me informed. She EXITS. OFF Weyoun's expression... CUT TO: 13 INT. REBEL CAVERN Garak is briefing Kira, Damar and Rusot. GARAK ... and according to our new contact on Kelvas Five, the Breen will begin installing their energy dampening weapons aboard Jem'Hadar fighters within a week. DAMAR (to Kira) Has the Federation made any progress on counteracting these weapons? KIRA They're still having trouble understanding the underlying technology. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT ONE 17. 13 CONTINUED: DAMAR Why aren't the Klingon ships affected by these Breen weapons? KIRA We don't know that yet either. (beat) But, if we could supply the Federation with one, it would give them a chance to come up with a countermeasure. GARAK I had the same thought. Kira ignores the following Rusot/Damar exchange -- she's coming up with a plan. RUSOT (outraged) Our priority should be to free Cardassia from the Dominion, not to do Starfleet's dirty work. DAMAR We're all in this together. By helping Starfleet, we're helping ourselves. Rusot doesn't like that answer, but swallows it. Again. Kira, meanwhile, is beginning to see the outlines of a plan... KIRA (to Garak) There's a Cardassian repair facility in the Kelvas System, right? GARAK Yes. I take it you have something in mind? KIRA (still working it out in her head) It won't be easy... but if we can get onto the bridge... (decisive) All right. We'll use a five-man team. The four of us, plus Odo. (beat) Garak, I'll need everything we have on the Kelvas facility. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT ONE 18. 13 CONTINUED: (2) Garak looks hesitant. KIRA Something wrong? GARAK Possibly... could I have a few words with the commander... He leads her away. 13A GARAK & KIRA In a somewhat private area. KIRA What's on your mind? GARAK It's about taking Odo on this mission... (beat) I'm afraid there's no easy way of putting this... he's been hiding the true extent of his illness from you for some time now. His condition has severely deteriorated. And the more he changes form, the worse it gets. KIRA I know. (off his look) I love him, Garak. You think I wouldn't notice? GARAK Why the pretense? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT ONE 19-20. 13A CONTINUED: KIRA Because I also know that he doesn't want me to find out about it. He wants to put up a brave front and protect me from the truth. Fine. If that makes this easier for him, if that gives him one last shred of dignity to hang onto, then I'll go on ignoring what's happening to him right up until... right up until the end. (beat) Anything else? GARAK No. With that, the mask closes in over Kira's features again and she heads back to rejoin Damar and Rusot. KIRA (to Damar) All right... we're going to need a Cardassian shuttle with up-to-date security protocols... FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE NINE:'Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT TWO 21-22. ACT TWO FADE IN: 14 OMITTED 15 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) As a Klingon BIRD OF PREY DECLOAKS and docks at station. 15A INT. SURGERY Where GENERAL MARTOK is lying unconscious on the bio-bed. Numerous DEVICES are attached to his arms and chest and he's wearing a Klingon surgical gown. WORF is watching an N.D. Nurse check the various monitors and equipment that are hooked up to his friend. SISKO'S COM VOICE Sisko to Worf. WORF (to com) Worf here. SISKO'S COM VOICE I'd like to see you in my office, commander. WORF On my way. Worf takes a last look at Martok, then EXITS. 15B INT. CAPTAIN'S OFFICE Sisko is at the desk when Worf ENTERS. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT TWO 23. 15B CONTINUED: SISKO How's Martok? WORF Doctor Bashir said he'll make a full recovery. SISKO I'm glad to hear that. (beat) Mister Worf, we have a serious problem on our hands. WORF (nods) Gowron. SISKO He seems hell-bent on continuing these offensives regardless of the cost. WORF He is a stubborn, arrogant man. SISKO That may be true, but he's not a fool. He's risking our entire defense posture. Why can't he see that? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT TWO 24. 15B CONTINUED: (2) WORF I suspect the Chancellor cannot see anything at the moment... except for one man. SISKO You mean Martok? WORF Gowron sees him as a political threat. These attacks against the Dominion are designed to humiliate Martok in the eyes of the Empire -- to force him to endure defeat after defeat. SISKO Are you telling me this is a political vendetta? WORF It would not be the first time that a Klingon Chancellor put his own interests ahead of the greater good. Sisko stares at him for a beat... takes a step or two away from Worf to let this outrageous idea sink in. SISKO Something has to be done. WORF I agree. And I have a solution. But it will not be easy. SISKO Do whatever it takes, Worf. Those Klingon ships out there are the only thing between us and the Breen. Gowron's risking the safety of the entire Alpha Quadrant and it has to stop. WORF Understood. Worf EXITS. CUT TO: DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT TWO 25. 16 thru OMITTED 17 18 INT. REBEL CAVERN. Kira is sitting at a table and working on some PADDs when another PADD is suddenly tossed on the table in front of her. She looks up to see Rusot standing there. RUSOT My men have secured the shuttle. They'll meet us at those coordinates. Kira barely glances at the PADD as she pushes it to one side and then goes back to her own work. KIRA Good. RUSOT Are you enjoying yourself? Getting Cardassians to do your bidding must give you great satisfaction. KIRA I'm a little busy right now, Rusot. Go find someone else to play with. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT TWO 26. 18 CONTINUED: Rusot leans down close to her, cornering her in her chair with his body. She watches him coolly. RUSOT You may have fooled Damar into believing that you're here to help fight the Dominion, but I know why you're really here. KIRA This should be good. RUSOT You killed hundreds of Cardassians during the Occupation. Now you're getting a chance to do it again. That's why you're here, isn't it? To hang a few more Cardassian neckbones from your belt? (beat) Admit it, Kira -- you won't be satisfied until every one of us is dead. Kira tries to get up. KIRA I don't have time for this... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT TWO 27. 18 CONTINUED: (2) He tries to shove her back down, but the second his hand touches her, the heel of Kira's palm smashes into his chin. She hits him a few times hard and fast and in the blink of an eye she has him face down on the ground and at her mercy. KIRA (continuing) Don't you ever touch me again. RUSOT I guess I hit a nerve... She twists his wrist in a certain way and he grunts in pain. KIRA That's hitting a nerve, Rusot. Keep pushing me and you're going to find out just how many nerves your miserable body has. She twists his wrist again and then releases him and stands back. He slowly gets to his feet and there's a moment as they stand there face to face. RUSOT When this is all over... and the Dominion is defeated... KIRA You won't have any trouble finding me. They glare at each other for a moment, then Rusot EXITS. Kira watches him go, then hears... GARAK'S VOICE You'll have to do something about him long before that, commander. She turns to see Garak as he steps out of the shadows, holding a phaser. KIRA (dry) Thanks for all your help. GARAK You appeared to have things under control. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT TWO 28. 18 CONTINUED: (3) GARAK (Cont'd) (beat) Despite his statement to the contrary, Rusot won't wait until the end of the war to make his move. I suggest that you not wait either. Kill him... before he kills you. OFF Kira's expression as she realizes that Garak just may be right... FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT THREE 29-29A. ACT THREE FADE IN: 19 INT. SURGERY Martok is still lying on the bio-bed, but he's conscious and is hooked up to fewer of the medical devices. He looks at Worf with outrage. MARTOK Challenge Gowron? In the middle of a war? It's treasonous! I won't do it. WORF Gowron is leading us all to ruin. It is your duty to challenge him to protect the Empire! MARTOK You would have me protect the Empire by breaking my oath... by spilling the blood of a Klingon brother while an enemy stands at our door? Where is the honor in that? WORF Gowron is sacrificing our troops for his own petty reasons. Where is the honor in that? MARTOK The troops are his to command, Worf. It is not our place to question him unless he acts with cowardice -- and there is no proof of that! WORF You are not listening! Martok still can't wrap his mind around this -- he looks at Worf as if he's gone completely mad. MARTOK I've heard every word you said. You want me to become Chancellor. Me. (beat) Tell me Worf, how do you think the members of the High Council will react when they're asked to follow a common man from the Ketha Lowlands? A man without a drop of noble blood in his veins? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT THREE 30. 19 CONTINUED: WORF Kahless himself was not high- born. MARTOK Kahless was divine. WORF Your name is revered throughout the Empire. If you seize the Leadership, every warrior from here to Kronos will swear an oath to you. With that kind of support, the High Council will have no choice but to accept you as chancellor. MARTOK You sound like a Romulan. WORF You know I'm right. Martok has heard enough. MARTOK I am a loyal soldier of the Empire! I would rather die than dishonor my uniform by raising a hand to my chancellor in a time of war! I would bring shame to everything I have fought to protect! Everything I believe in. WORF General -- MARTOK My decision is made and we will not speak of this again! Worf looks at him for a beat, then realizes that further argument is futile. He EXITS in frustration. CUT TO: 20 EXT. SPACE - RUNABOUT (OPTICAL) Moving at warp. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT THREE 30A. 21 INT. RUNABOUT Kira in the pilot seat, Odo sitting next to her. In the b.g. Garak and Damar are standing near the Replicator. Garak hands Damar a PADD. Kira is watching Odo closely -- he notices. ODO You're staring again. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT THREE 31. 21 CONTINUED: KIRA Sorry. I just can't help... worrying about you. ODO Don't. It may be a long time before the first symptoms manifest themselves. And by then, I'm sure Doctor Bashir will have found a cure. She gives him a brave smile. KIRA Right. (beat) Can you take the helm? I'm going to get some raktajino. Odo nods and Kira heads for the rear of the cockpit. 21A NEAR THE REPLICATOR Her mind still on Odo, Kira goes to the replicator and at first doesn't notice the stunned look on Damar's face or that Garak is regarding him with a sympathetic expression. She works the Replicator and then picks up on the vibe. KIRA What's wrong? GARAK One of our listening posts picked up a message that... the Dominion has succeeded in locating Damar's family. DAMAR They're dead. There's nothing to say and Kira doesn't try. Damar is still trying to sort through his reaction. DAMAR My wife and I... she was a difficult woman. Selfish. Stubborn. But she wasn't part of this rebellion. The Dominion knew that... the Founder knew that... Weyoun knew that. To kill her... and my son... (beat) The... casual brutality of it. The... waste of life. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT THREE 32-33. 21A CONTINUED: DAMAR (Cont'd) What kind of state tolerates the murder of innocent women and children? What kind of people give those orders? A part of Kira knows she should keep her mouth shut, but the worry and stress over Odo are fraying her nerves and she finds herself saying KIRA (pointed) Yeah, Damar, what kind of people give those orders? Kira immediately regrets opening her mouth, but too late -- Damar's eyes blaze with fury and for a moment, it looks as though he might lunge at her. He keeps it under control, however, and simply drops the PADD in disgust and revulsion, then heads for the cockpit and takes the pilot's seat. KIRA (to herself) That was stupid. GARAK Not at all. Damar has a certain... romanticism about the past. He can use a dose of cold water. KIRA I could've picked a better time. GARAK If Damar is the man to lead a new Cardassia... if he's the man we hope him to be... then the pain of this news made him more receptive to what you said, not less. QUARK'S - SECOND LEVEL EZRI and Worf are at a table, sharing drinks and trying to figure out what to do about Gowron. WORF ... and in truth, I understand his position. It is the duty of all soldiers to support their leaders in time of war. Asking Martok to stand against Gowron was a foolish error. EZRI So what are you going to do? WORF (with little faith) Try to persuade Gowron to discontinue these attacks. (beat) You've said very little. EZRI I'm a counselor. Most of my job is listening. WORF I'm not interested in counseling. I need something more useful. (off her look) That's not what I meant. EZRI I know what you meant. Look, I'm just not sure I should be giving you advice on what to do in this situation. This is a Klingon matter. WORF You're still a member of the House of Martok. EZRI This is the first I've heard of it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT FOUR 37. 32B CONTINUED: WORF Martok and I discussed it weeks ago. (a shrug) He likes you. He thinks you're an honorable woman and a worthy successor to Jadzia. (casual, taking a drink) So do I. EZRI That's very sweet of him... of both of you. WORF Sweet? EZRI Not a very Klingon word is it? WORF No. EZRI It's very... honorable. WORF Better. But a little obvious. Now, tell me what you think. Ezri takes a moment. EZRI Okay. But, I'm not sure you're going to like it. (beat) I think the situation with Gowron is just a symptom of a deeper problem. The Klingon Empire is dying. And I think it deserves to die. WORF You're right. I don't like it. EZRI Don't get me wrong, I'm really touched that you still consider me a member of the House of Martok... but I tend to look at the Empire with a little more skepticism than Curzon or Jadzia did. (beat) DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT FOUR 38-40. 32B CONTINUED: (2) EZRI (Cont'd) I see a society in deep denial about itself. We're talking about a warrior culture that prides itself on maintaining centuries-old traditions of honor and integrity... but in reality, it's willing to accept corruption at the highest level. WORF You're overstating your case. EZRI Am I? Who was the last leader of the High Council that you respected? Has there even been one? His silence speaks volumes. EZRI How many times have you had to help cover up the crimes of Klingon leaders because someone told you it was for the "good of the Empire?" (beat) I know this sounds harsh, but... the truth is, you've been willing to accept a government you know is corrupt. Gowron is just the latest example. (beat) Worf, you're one of the most honorable and decent men I've ever met... and if you're willing to tolerate men like Gowron, what hope is there for the Empire? Off Worf's expression as he realizes that she may be right... 33 EXT. SPACE - THE CARDASSIAN SHUTTLE (OPTICAL) Moves at impulse toward a CARDASSIAN SPACE STATION which hangs in space. The three Cardassians are all carrying phaser rifles and Kira's uniform is torn and scorched. Kira's hands are manacled behind her back and they look for all the world like a guard detail escorting a dejected Federation prisoner. They round the corner and head toward the airlock, which is guarded by a Cardassian soldier named VORNAR and an N.D. Jem'Hadar. Damar and Rusot let Garak handle the situation, trying to draw as little attention as possible to themselves. GARAK We have a prisoner for the Vorta in command of this ship. Garak pulls out a Cardassian PADD and hands it to Vornar, who looks it over. VORNAR Everything seems to be in order. But you will have to leave your weapons here. He hands the PADD back. GARAK Why? Vornar isn't happy about it either. VORNAR New orders from Dominion Headquarters. No armed Cardassians allowed aboard Jem'Hadar vessels. GARAK (bitter) It sounds like they don't trust us anymore. Vornar glances at the Jem'Hadar, who simply looks coolly back. VORNAR So it would seem. (beat) I'm sorry, but those are the orders. GARAK It's not your fault. Damar is the last man through the airlock and just as he's about to exit... VORNAR (casual) Good luck... Legate Damar. LUARAN ... we'll run the first test firing in two hours, fourteen minutes. (listens) Agreed. Coordinate it with central operations. Luaran turns to the new arrivals. LUARAN What's this? GARAK We have a prisoner. LUARAN I can see that. Why are you bringing her to me? GARAK This is Commander Rota -- deputy intelligence officer for this entire sector. I would think you'd be interested in interrogating her. That gets Luaran's attention. She swings the eyepiece away from her face and looks Kira over for a moment. LUARAN I wasn't informed of this. GARAK I'm sure the report hasn't reached you yet, but that's not surprising. We only took the commander prisoner yesterday. Something about this rings false to Luaran. She looks Garak over closely. Klingon Admirals and Generals (both male and female). As Gowron rages, Worf seems lost in thought -- Ezri's words are still ringing in his ears. Gowron points to the map on the wall monitor. GOWRON Our next target... Sarpedion Five. The Generals and Admirals exchange concerned looks -- none of them think this is a good idea. MARTOK Sarpedion is the headquarters for the entire Twelfth Order. GOWRON (to Martok) Yes. You'll take fifteen Vorcha- class battle cruisers in first to soften their defenses. Then -- MARTOK Chancellor. That world is one of the most heavily fortified positions in the entire Cardassian Empire. Fifteen battle cruisers will barely scratch their defenses! Gowron seems to relish Martok's objection. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... But in the end, Martok feels the call of duty and his hand drops away from the knife. MARTOK I will fight any battle, anywhere... for the Empire. GOWRON (with a sneer) Spoken like a true warrior. Martok sits back down and Gowron goes back to the map. Worf looks at Martok and realizes that something's got to give. GOWRON After Martok has softened their defenses -- WORF No. Worf stands up. WORF We cannot attack Sarpedion. GOWRON I decide what can and cannot be done. WORF You rule without wisdom and without honor. The warriors gathered here will not say this to you... but I will. You are squandering our ships and our lives in a petty act of vengeance. You do not care what happens to the Empire, you only care about Gowron. A deep hatred burns in Gowron's eyes. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Tacking into... " - REV. 03/22/99 - ACT FIVE 58. 56A CONTINUED: (2) GOWRON I should've known better than to trust you again. WORF What I say now, I say as a member of the House of Martok, not as a Starfleet officer... you have dishonored yourself and the Empire. You are not worthy of leading the Council. Shocked looks go around the room. GOWRON There can be only one answer to that. Gowron strips off his cloak and goes to a wall display of BAT'LETHS. Worf goes to another display and grabs a bat'leth. Martok grabs his arm. MARTOK Worf, this is madness... But Worf pulls away and turns to face Gowron. The other Klingons are gathered in a circle around the room. Gowron swings the bat'leth first and Worf parries it. The two men fence with each other for a moment, then begin the battle in earnest. The fight is close and brutal... each man wounding the other several times... as the Klingons watch the contest, their own blood begins to rise... they start yelling and cheering on the combatants... Worf now fights with the two pieces of sword as if they were knives. Gowron has the advantage and presses it, driving Worf back... but then he overextends himself and Worf pulls him off-balance. The two men crash to the deck together, Gowron on top. Gowron struggles up, fire in his eyes... but then Worf PLUNGES the two pieces of sword deep into either side of Gowron. GOWRON (difficult) You will... not... have this... day... With an heroic effort, he manages to get to his feet, with both pieces of sword still sticking out of him. Worf is now disarmed and if Gowron can just swing the bat'leth at him, he can deliver a death blow... GOWRON (dying breath) Victory... is... mine... The bat'leth still in his hand, Gowron falls to the floor, dead. There's a breathless moment... then Worf goes to the dead man, kneels down, opens his eyes and gives the traditional DEATH CRY. While Worf is still kneeling, Martok picks up the CLOAK and drapes it around his shoulders. MARTOK Hail Worf! Leader of the Empire! (beat) Worf! Worf! Worf! He takes the cloak from his own shoulders and goes to put it on Martok's shoulders. Martok stops him. MARTOK Worf... I do not seek the leadership. WORF Kahless said, "Great men do not seek power, they have power thrust upon them." He puts the cloak on Martok's shoulders and stands back. WORF Hail Martok! Leader of the Empire! Leader of destiny!
