JEM'HADAR BRIDGE Continuous from the end of "Umbra." EZRI and WORF are facing WEYOUN, DAMAR and the Breen General, THOT GOR. N.D. Breen and Jem'Hadar as needed. WEYOUN Commander Worf... I hope you'll accept my deepest sympathies regarding the approaching demise of the Klingon Empire. WORF The Klingon Empire will outlive the Dominion by many centuries. WEYOUN Your loyalty to a hopeless cause is admirable. (turning his attention to Ezri) You must be Ezri Dax. My predecessors -- Weyoun Four and Five -- had a high regard for your predecessor, Jadzia. EZRI I assure you, the feeling wasn't mutual. WEYOUN How unfortunate. After all, you and I have so much in common. We're both merely individual links in a long chain. EZRI And that's where any similarity ends... WEYOUN (sighs) I hoped we could have an amicable relationship. (to a Jem'Hadar soldier) DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - TEASER 1A. 1 CONTINUED: WEYOUN (Cont'd) Secure the prisoners below. And make sure they share a cell. (pointed) They may wish to physically comfort each other during the long trip back to Cardassia. Thot Gor chimes in with a burst of harsh STATIC. WEYOUN (chuckling) I find inter-species mating rituals fascinating to watch. Don't you? With a GROWL, Worf takes a step toward the Vorta, but his Breen guard touches him with his truncheon. Worf falls to the floor. One of the guards grabs Ezri as two others pull Worf to his feet and hustle them off the Bridge. DAMAR (re: the truncheon) Interesting device. WEYOUN (to Thot Gor) I'm so sorry. Where are my manners? (indicating Damar) Allow me to introduce Legate Damar, head of the Cardassian Union. (to Damar) Thot Gor. DAMAR (to Thot Gor) Thot -- that's the equivalent of a legate, isn't it? Thot Gor issues some STATIC. DAMAR (to Weyoun) What did he say? WEYOUN He says you need to get your universal translator adjusted. DAMAR I would've -- if I had known we were meeting with the Breen. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - TEASER 2. 1A INT. JEM'HADAR CORRIDOR (OPTICAL) The FEMALE SHAPE-SHIFTER and TWO N.D. Jem'Hadar guards walk down the Corridor and stop just outside the door to the bridge. The Female Shape-shifter's disease is very much in evidence, with her face and body covered with dry and flaking bits of flesh. She takes a moment to prepare herself before going onto the bridge... seems to gather her strength... and then with obvious effort, she MORPHS away all signs of the disease. Holding her head high, she EXITS to... 1B INT. JEM'HADAR BRIDGE - CONTINUOUS The Female Shape-shifter ENTERS and steps towards Thot Gor, approaching him with deference and respect. She even manages a smile. FEMALE SHAPE-SHIFTER It is a distinct pleasure to finally meet you. Thot Gor issues STATIC. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - TEASER 3. 1B CONTINUED: FEMALE SHAPE-SHIFTER Thank you. If our face-to-face talks are as productive as our subspace communications have been, I'm sure we'll sign the treaty documents within a few days. Thot Gor answers with STATIC. DAMAR (sotto, to Weyoun) I haven't even seen this treaty. WEYOUN (sotto) We'll discuss it later. FEMALE SHAPE-SHIFTER (to Thot Gor) This is a great day. The alliance between the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion will end the destructive war that has torn this quadrant apart for so long. With the Breen at our side, the Federation will not be able to stand against us. They'll be erased from the face of the galaxy... On her confident and determined expression, we -- 2 OMITTED FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT ONE 4. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes.) 3 EXT. SPACE - JEM'HADAR & BREEN SHIPS (OPTICAL) Both ships at impulse. 4 INT. JEM'HADAR BRIDGE Damar is reading a PADD and fuming while Weyoun looks on. (The Female Shape-shifter and the Breen have gone. N.D. Jem'Hadar as required.) DAMAR This is outrageous! Have you read this treaty? WEYOUN Parts of it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT ONE 5. 4 CONTINUED: DAMAR There's a reference to "territorial concessions" that Cardassia will make to the Breen. But it doesn't say what those concessions are. WEYOUN (reassuring smile) Oh, you needn't worry about that. They've all been itemized in a secret protocol between the Dominion and the Breen. All you're required to do is sign the document as the acknowledged leader of the Cardassian Union. DAMAR I want to see this protocol. WEYOUN It wouldn't be much of a secret then, would it? DAMAR (incredulous) You expect me to agree to territorial concessions when I don't even know what they are? Weyoun patiently tries to convince Damar that this is a reasonable proposition. WEYOUN Damar, you're missing the point. We need the Breen to win this war. When it's over, there will be more than enough territories available to compensate Cardassia for the loss of a few minor planets. DAMAR There are no "minor" planets in the Cardassian Union -- WEYOUN You know what I think you should do? Talk to Thot Gor. Express your concerns. He's very reasonable and quite personable once you get to know him. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT ONE 5A. 4 CONTINUED: (2) DAMAR I don't trust him or his people. The Founders should never have agreed to give away Cardassian territory without my consent! Weyoun suddenly goes stone cold and Damar realizes he's gone too far. WEYOUN I'm sorry, I think I misunderstood you. It sounded as if you were implying that Cardassian territory did not belong to the Founders. Surely that's not what you meant. There's a moment of complete silence on the Bridge. Everyone is staring at Damar, who knows he can give only one response. DAMAR No. Of course not. WEYOUN Good. I look forward to receiving the signed documents from you within the hour. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT ONE 5AA-6. 4 CONTINUED: (3) Weyoun turns back to his console and Damar is momentarily aware that he is very much alone in a room of enemies. But he doesn't leave. WEYOUN Is there something else? DAMAR The Klingons have attacked Septimus Three. WEYOUN I'm aware of that. DAMAR Are you also aware that they've landed fifteen divisions? The Cardassian troops will not survive without reinforcements. WEYOUN I assure you that the Septimus Three situation will be dealt with. We won't allow your brave soldiers to perish in vain. You have my word. Damar isn't sure how much that is worth, but he doesn't have much choice at the moment. He EXITS. CUT TO: 4A OMITTED (BECOMES SCENE 7A) 5 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Establishing the station. 6 INT. CAPTAIN'S OFFICE GENERAL MARTOK and SISKO are looking over some PADDs. MARTOK Septimus Three will fall within the week! The Cardassian Eleventh Order is a reserve unit -- old men and walking wounded. They don't stand a chance. SISKO I think you're right. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT ONE 6A. 6 CONTINUED: MARTOK (puts down PADD) But enough about the war with the Dominion. I want to hear about the war at home. (off his look) You just married that freighter captain, didn't you? SISKO Yes... MARTOK Then war has broken out, whether you know it or not. A long, grueling, intoxicating war. (thinking back) I remember the day my beloved Sirella first moved into my home. I had a pet targ. Had him since I was a boy. A filthy, mangy beast -- but in his bony breast beat the heart of a warrior. Of course, Sirella loathed him. (a beat) To make a long story short, while supervising the unloading of her bags, Sirella "accidently" left the front door open. (a beat) DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT ONE 7. 6 CONTINUED: (2) MARTOK (Cont'd) My faithful targ, ever-ready to follow the call of the wild, tottered outside on his frail legs and disappeared into the forest. (a sigh) I never laid eyes on him again. SISKO Lady Sirella draws first blood. MARTOK You see my point. Don't get me wrong, I would not trade Sirella for all the targs on Kronos... And over the course of our marriage I've won more than my fair share of the battles between us. (a beat) But in the end, I know she will win the war. SISKO I'll keep that in mind. Martok smiles. CUT TO: DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT ONE 8. 7 INT. KAI WINN'S QUARTERS - BEDROOM WINN and DUKAT are relaxing in bed, both wearing BATHROBES. They're nibbling on FRUIT and breakfast PASTRIES, and sipping some odd-colored FRUIT-JUICE. The mood is intimate and playful. WINN (inspecting the plate) You ate all the milaberries... DUKAT Have Solbor bring us more. Winn smiles as she selects some other piece of fruit and begins to slice it with a small KNIFE -- WINN And give him another chance to frown disapprovingly? DUKAT (smiles) The good Ranjen doesn't much care for me, does he? She pops a piece of fruit in his mouth -- WINN You'd think he'd be pleased to see his Kai so happy. DUKAT (taking her hand) Are you happy, Adami? WINN More than I've ever been in my life... He leans over and gives her a brief kiss. WINN The Prophets are smiling on us, Anjohl. They've not only brought us together, they've given us a great task -- the Restoration of Bajor. DUKAT Our world will be reborn. And you will be its leader. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT ONE 9. 7 CONTINUED: WINN (humbly) It's a sacred responsibility... Winn gets up and moves to the MIRROR, studies her reflection searchingly. WINN I pray I have the strength to do what the Prophets are asking of me... Dukat stands and moves in behind her. DUKAT I'll be at your side. We won't fail them. She smiles gratefully at him in the mirror. DUKAT But the Restoration will not come without a struggle. There will be those who'll stand in our way. WINN No one can be allowed to interfere with the will of the Prophets... DUKAT Not even those who claim to speak in their name. Winn stares into her eyes in the mirror, as if to see if she understands what he's saying. WINN The Emissary... DUKAT (nods) In your vision, the Prophets said he'd faltered. WINN I can only hope he doesn't choose to oppose them. Their love is strong, but so is their wrath... They stare at each other in the mirror. Off the unholy pact they've made together... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT ONE 10-11. 7AA EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL)(STOCK) A Jem'Hadar ship traveling at warp. 7A INT. JEM'HADAR CELL (FORMERLY SCENE 4A) Ezri and Worf are hanging UPSIDE DOWN in a dark and dimly lit room, (all we can make out is the back wall). EZRI I hate to say it... but this is doing wonders for my back. WORF I doubt that was the intent of our captors. EZRI Probably not... WORF (a beat) We must get back to the station and warn Starfleet about the Breen... EZRI You're right. There's just a few problems. We're on a Jem'Hadar ship... hanging upside down... heading in the wrong direction... and... WORF And what? EZRI I think I'm getting spacesick... And off this moment, 8 OMITTED FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 11A-12. ACT TWO FADE IN: 9 INT. SISKO'S QUARTERS Sisko, in civvies, is cooking when KASIDY ENTERS, carrying a BAG. He goes to greet her. SISKO Welcome home, Mrs. Sisko. KASIDY Thank you, Mr. Sisko. He kisses her and she tosses the bag on a couch. Sisko returns to his cooking. SISKO How was the cargo run? KASIDY Interesting. It seems my Bajoran crewmembers have decided that serving under the wife of the Emissary is a little different than serving under his girlfriend. (beat) I've known some of those people for ten years or more and suddenly they're asking me for advice about their children, their husbands, their wives... their spiritual relationship with the Prophets... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 12A-13. 9 CONTINUED: SISKO Welcome to the club. Which reminds me... every spring, the Emissary holds a little ceremony to bless the women on the station who want to become mothers someday... KASIDY (suspicious) What does that have to do with me? SISKO There's been a request made -- several, in fact -- that the Emissary's new wife perform the ceremony this year. This week, actually... KASIDY No. SISKO Kas... KASIDY No. I've got to draw the line somewhere. I married you -- I didn't convert. And I'm not going to start acting like I suddenly believe in the Prophets. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 14-14A. 9 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO I don't want you to do anything you're uncomfortable with. KASIDY Good. Then it's settled. (moving on) I'm going to take a sonic shower. SISKO Take your time. Dinner won't be ready for another fifteen minutes. Kasidy EXITS. We stay on Sisko as he goes back to his cooking. SISKO (to himself, philosophical) And so the battle begins... CUT TO: DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 15. 10 EXT. CARDASSIA PRIME - DAY (MATTE SHOT) Establishing the planet. 11 INT. CARDASSIAN HOLDING CELL Where Worf and Ezri are now incarcerated. We find them both lying on their backs, as Worf struggles to pull a small metal pin out of the cell's single bunk with his bare fingers. The tension between the two of them is still palpable. EZRI Let me try. WORF No. You lack the necessary strength. EZRI And your fingers are too fat. Now move over -- Ezri tries to reach for the pin, Worf refuses to yield. Suddenly, Ezri lets out a yelp of pain and lurches upward, knocking her head on the underside of the bunk. EZRI Ow! WORF Be quiet. But Worf softens as he sees Ezri rubbing her head and sucking on her finger. WORF Are you hurt? EZRI Yes, I'm hurt. You cut my finger and made me hit my head! WORF It was an accident. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 15A. 11 CONTINUED: EZRI I still don't understand how getting a pin out of that bunk is going to help us escape. WORF If you would stop interfering and allow me to remove the pin, I will show you. Now let me look at your head. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 16. 11 CONTINUED: (2) EZRI No, thanks. The last time you touched me, things got a little out of control. WORF You are right about that. I was seduced and betrayed. EZRI Seduced? I seduced you? WORF At least we agree on that point. EZRI We do not! WORF You desired a physical relationship with me from the start. That much was obvious. EZRI You have the biggest ego of any man I've ever known. WORF Considering how many men you've known, that is quite a statement. EZRI Am I supposed to be embarrassed that Jadzia had a few lovers before you? WORF A few? EZRI You're right. It was more than a few. It was dozens. Hundreds. In fact, I don't think there was anyone aboard D.S. Nine who wasn't her lover! Worf looks up sharply, but before he can throw back a rejoinder, there is the SOUND of footsteps outside the door. Worf scrambles out from under the bunk and sits down just as the door OPENS and Damar, Weyoun and two N.D. Cardassian Guards ENTER the cell. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 17-17A. 11 CONTINUED: (3) Because of the cramped space, one Guard is forced to remain in the Corridor, while the other stands just inside the door. Weyoun and Damar are both carrying PADDs. WEYOUN Let me take this opportunity to welcome you both to Cardassia Prime. I trust you've been well- cared for so far? Neither prisoner answers him. Weyoun looks over his PADD and shakes his head sadly. WEYOUN I've been looking over the information you supplied to the Breen during your interrogation, and the results are a bit confusing -- as mental probes so often are... (a beat) I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sifting through the data and clarifying certain issues for us... EZRI You can't be serious. WEYOUN I'm always serious. You see, if you don't do as I ask, I'll have to hand you over to Legate Damar... (sotto voce) ... and you know how ruthless Cardassians can be. Weyoun looks to Damar, who holds up a PADD. DAMAR (reading) "It is my duty to inform you that you are to be turned over to a Cardassian Tribunal to stand trial as war criminals." EZRI War criminals? What are the charges? DAMAR It is not necessary for you to know that. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 18. 11 CONTINUED: (4) DAMAR (Cont'd) What you do need to know is that you will be found guilty and executed. WEYOUN However... if you decide to help us in our search for a quick end to this miserable war, your sentence will be reduced to life imprisonment. EZRI You want to end the war? Why don't you convince the Founders to surrender. Weyoun steps up to Ezri, holding up the PADD. WEYOUN You know, my dear... it would be a shame if you were to die without the good Doctor Bashir knowing how you felt about him. But before Ezri can respond, Worf grabs Weyoun's head and TWISTS IT -- snapping his neck. One of the Guards rushes for Worf, but it's too late -- the Vorta slumps to the ground with a surprised expression on his face. The first Guard HITS Worf with his rifle butt, while the second covers Ezri with his weapon. The first Guard then aims his weapon at Worf's head, but Damar stops him. DAMAR Wait! The Guards pause with their phasers pointing at Ezri and Worf while Damar checks on Weyoun. He's dead. There's a beat, and then Damar begins to LAUGH. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 19. 11 CONTINUED: (5) Ezri and Worf exchange a surprised look at his reaction. DAMAR (to Weyoun) Overconfident. The hallmark of the Weyouns. Maybe the Founders should eliminate that from your genetic recipe next time. Still amused by the whole affair, Damar stands up and looks at Worf. DAMAR You know they'll just make another copy of him. You should've killed me; there's only one Damar. WORF I'll keep that in mind. DAMAR I'm sure you will. (beat) Consider his offer, Klingon. You die in two days. (to Guards, re: body) Pick that up and let's go. The Guards pick up Weyoun's body and EXIT along with Damar. CUT TO: 12 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Re-establishing the station. 13 INT. KAI WINN'S QUARTERS Winn and Dukat are enjoying drinks together on the couch. The mood is relaxed, intimate. As Dukat pours Winn a glass of springwine, she studies his face for a long beat. WINN Who are you? Dukat is momentarily thrown by her sudden question -- has she seen through him? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 20. 13 CONTINUED: DUKAT What do you mean? WINN I mean, who are you, Anjohl Tennan? I want to know everything -- about your family, your childhood... DUKAT It would bore you... WINN Not at all. What might seem trivial to you matters a great deal to me. I need to know more about this guide the Prophets have sent me... this simple farmer... this man who shares my bed... He rests a hand on her shoulder and she takes it. There's a long beat as they gaze at each other, then suddenly the SCREEN WHITES OUT and we -- CUT TO: 14 INT. PROMENADE - VISION (OPTICAL) As the SCREEN WHITES IN, Winn finds herself facing the Sisko Alien. SISKO ALIEN We are of Bajor. Suddenly the KIRA ALIEN is nearby. KIRA ALIEN We await the Restoration. WINN I am ready. I have met the Guide. You need only tell me what to do. I give myself to the Prophets in all things. Suddenly the SOLBOR ALIEN is nearby. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 21. 14 CONTINUED: SOLBOR ALIEN She does not understand. Suddenly the ODO ALIEN is nearby. ODO ALIEN She is fearful. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... The Aliens begin to close in around her, and we see that their eyes are now GLOWING RED. SISKO ALIEN Give us your allegiance Kai Winn Adami... SOLBOR ALIEN Restore us to our rightful place in the Celestial Temple... ODO ALIEN Reject the false Prophets... KIRA ALIEN Walk our path... and embrace your own destiny. SISKO ALIEN Feel our love... the love... of the Pah-Wraiths... The Sisko Alien holds out a hand and opens it -- there's a RED EARRING on his palm. WINN No... WINN They... they came to me... a vision. DUKAT Blessed be the Prophets... WINN No! They weren't the Prophets. They were... She can't bring herself to say it. DUKAT They were... what? WINN (a whisper) Pah-wraiths. Dukat staggers back as if hit by the news. He feigns a struggle himself. WINN (urgent) Find Solbor. Have him go to the Shrine and bring me the Orb. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT TWO 23A-24. 17 CONTINUED: (2) WINN (Cont'd) I must bare my soul to the Prophets and beg their forgiveness... DUKAT Eminence, are you sure that's wise? What do the Prophets -- WINN (a roar) Go! Bring me the Orb! Dukat drops his head and rushes from the room. Once he's gone, Winn allows herself to collapse into a chair. She looks exhausted, defeated. CUT TO: 18 INT. HABITAT RING CORRIDOR Dukat is walking down the Corridor at a quick pace... and we can tell he's pleased with the latest turn of events... FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... DOMINION BRIEFING ROOM Damar is sitting at a console with his feet up and having a glass of kanar when WEYOUN EIGHT ENTERS. At the sight of the new Weyoun, Damar bursts out laughing, much to Weyoun's displeasure. Two N.D. Cardassians are working consoles in the b.g. DAMAR Well. Hello. WEYOUN I'm glad you find the death of my predecessor so amusing. DAMAR You misjudge me. I miss him deeply. (lifts bottle) Here -- let's drink to Weyoun Seven. Weyoun makes no move to take him up on his offer. WEYOUN When will the prisoners be executed? DAMAR When their trial is completed. The legal protocols must be observed. WEYOUN When? DAMAR The execution is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Fourteen hundred hours. WEYOUN Have they signed the confessions? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 26. 20 CONTINUED: DAMAR No. (beat) Maybe you should talk to Worf again. Damar laughs again, and Weyoun simmers. The door now OPENS and Thot Gor ENTERS along with Three N.D. Breen. WEYOUN Ah. Welcome to our command center. Thot Gor looks around for a beat and then lets out a burst of STATIC. WEYOUN Of course. Go right ahead. Thot Gor and the other Breen move to examine the consoles in the room. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 27. 20 CONTINUED: (2) Thot Gor turns back to them and issues another burst of STATIC. DAMAR Absolutely not! That database is classified -- But Weyoun intercedes, cutting Damar off. WEYOUN What Legate Damar means to say is that the entire database is open to you. Feel free to examine it at your leisure. Thot Gor nods and goes back to work. DAMAR (sotto, to Weyoun) You surely don't mean that. WEYOUN (sotto) On the contrary, I'm quite sincere. DAMAR (sotto) They don't need to know everything about our military operations in order to help us. WEYOUN (sotto) The decision was made by the Founder herself. (beat) The Founder has also decided that from now on your military recommendations should be submitted to Thot Gor, who will pass them on to her. DAMAR I will not! Thot Gor turns back briefly at the outburst, then goes back to examining the various consoles and monitors. Weyoun turns on Damar, deadly serious. WEYOUN I trust that was simply an unguarded emotional outburst, so I will ignore it. This time. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 27A. 20 CONTINUED: (3) WEYOUN (Cont'd) Make plans to do exactly as the Founder has instructed or you can schedule an execution for yourself as well. Weyoun moves over to guide Thot Gor and Damar is left to stew on his own. CUT TO: 21 INT. CARDASSIAN HOLDING CELL - CLOSE ON WALL PANEL Which is OPEN. We can see that one of the metal legs on the bunk bed is lying on the floor and a supporting pin has been removed. Something CLICKS inside the panel and Ezri looks up at Worf. EZRI Ready. 23 INT. CARDASSIAN CORRIDOR Where a Cardassian Guard is standing outside a door. The door suddenly OPENS in a shower of SPARKS and Worf and Ezri rush out. Ezri SHOOTS a Cardassian Guard who appears. Another Cardassian FIRES at them from behind. One shot MISSES, but the other HITS Worf in the leg -- he goes down. Ezri SHOOTS the guard. WORF Go! Leave me! EZRI Shut up. Ezri tries to help him to his feet. WORF You never listen... EZRI Look who's talking. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... KIRA I'll help tie him up if that's what it takes. QUARK comes over to the table with a festive-looking bowl of Bajoran food. QUARK Koganka pudding. KASIDY I didn't order this. QUARK Compliments of Ranjen Surfan and his wife. (whatever) It's traditional or something. Quark looks across the room and Kasidy follows his gaze. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 29A. 29C KASIDY'S POV An N.D. Ranjen and his Wife raise their glasses in silent toast. 24D RESUME Kasidy smiles and waves back at them. QUARK Enjoy. And with that, he EXITS. KIRA (smiling) Better get used to it. KASIDY (with a rueful smile) Just call me Mrs. Emissary... Do you know I've had complete strangers stop me on the Promenade and ask me to ask the Prophets to bless their children, their crops, their homes... KIRA It must be a little overwhelming. KASIDY Ridiculous is what it is. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 30. 24D CONTINUED: KASIDY (Cont'd) I don't talk to the Prophets -- I don't even believe in the Prophets. Immediately, Kasidy realizes what she's just said and who she's said it to. KASIDY Not that there's anything wrong with believing in the Prophets... KIRA (smiling, no offense taken) It's all right KASIDY It's just that I have my own set of beliefs. Beliefs that I was brought up with. That's why I don't feel right about what Ben is asking me to do. (off Kira's look) He wants me to stand up in front of a group of Bajoran women and ask the Prophets to give them children. Kira considers this, then offers: KIRA My father was never a religious man, but once he got married, he attended services every day because it was important to my mother. KASIDY That's very sweet... I guess I'm just afraid that if I do this for Ben -- if I start down that road -- where will it all end? I don't want to lose sight of the things I believe in. KIRA I can understand that. KASIDY I mean, didn't it bother your father to do something he didn't believe in just because your mother did? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 30A. 24D CONTINUED: (2) KIRA I asked him that once. You know what he told me? That that was as good a definition of marriage as he'd ever heard. Kasidy takes a moment to think about Kira's words. Just then Quark reappears with another bowl of Koganka. QUARK The Bajoran couple at table four. Quark moves off. Kasidy looks down at the plate thoughtfully, then looks up to Kira. KASIDY I love Ben... and I want to make him happy. But how much Koganka can I eat? And as Kasidy contemplates her own question -- DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 31. 24E INT. QUARK'S - FIRST LEVEL (FORMERLY SCENE 33A) O'BRIEN and Bashir are at the bar, nursing a couple of drinks. O'Brien is watching Quark carefully pour a drink into a glass and set it in front of an empty chair, while Bashir is brooding and staring into his glass. O'BRIEN Do you have to do that? QUARK I do it every day at this time. O'BRIEN I know. But it's sort of... morbid. QUARK Morbid? That implies she's not coming back. Bashir looks at him sharply too. O'BRIEN I'm not trying to imply anything of the kind. QUARK One of these days Ezri's going to come walking through those doors again and this drink is going to be sitting right here waiting for her when she does. O'BRIEN Well, in the meantime, all you're doing is reminding us that she's missing. QUARK No one's forcing you to sit here. Beat. BASHIR (mutters) It was the Badlands... O'BRIEN What? BASHIR What? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 31A. 24E CONTINUED: O'BRIEN You said something about the Badlands. BASHIR Did I? (beat) I was just thinking that... if Worf's escape pod hadn't drifted into the Badlands, the Defiant would've found him and Ezri never would've had to go out looking for him. QUARK I never thought I'd hear myself say this... but I wish the Defiant had found that lumbering Klingon oaf. Quark moves off to deal with some customers, leaving the two of them alone. O'BRIEN We can't do anything to change what's happened, so let's just... hope for the best. Bashir nods, he knows his friend is offering good advice. And yet... BASHIR I was just starting to... O'BRIEN "Starting to" what... ? BASHIR I don't know. But there was something about her... something that made me... happy. She was an old soul and yet she was young at heart. (beat) I don't even know what I'm saying. Bashir takes one more look at the solitary drink sitting on the counter and then EXITS. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... He said there were certain security precautions that had to be observed before the Orb could be removed from the Shrine. (beat) May I ask what you're planning to-- WINN No you may not. This is far beyond your ability to comprehend, Anjohl. Dukat has no choice but to swallow that, but he doesn't have to like it. The door CHIMES. WINN Come in. Solbor ENTERS, accompanied by two Bajoran Guards who are carrying the ORB TABERNACLE. Two other Guards stand watch in the Corridor. SOLBOR (formally) The Orb of Prophecy... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 32. 26 CONTINUED: WINN (to Guards) Place it on the table and then go. They do as they are told. SOLBOR How may I serve you? WINN You are not required here. Thank you. Solbor shoots a glance at Dukat, who is obviously not leaving, but keeps his comments to himself. Solbor and the Guards EXIT. Winn goes to the Orb and tries to settle herself. Dukat moves closer to her (but not so close that he could see inside the Tabernacle when it opens). DUKAT There's nothing to fear. WINN Of course not. I am the Kai. The Prophets will make everything clear to me. She takes a deep breath, then reaches out and... 27 ON THE TABERNACLE (OPTICAL) as it OPENS, revealing the rotating ORB itself. 28 RESUME As Winn looks down into the Orb. A moment passes and then Winn begins to look confused. WINN Something's wrong DUKAT What? WINN There's nothing. The Prophets show me nothing. They won't speak to me... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 33. 28 CONTINUED: She closes the Tabernacle and looks as if she might collapse at any moment. Dukat rushes to support her. WINN They've forsaken me... because I've been in communion with the evil ones... She closes her eyes and sags against Dukat. He holds her in his arms and tries to comfort her. DUKAT Adami... this may be hard for you to hear... but you must listen. She looks up at him. He steadies her, looks directly into her eyes. DUKAT There's something I've hidden from you. I didn't come here by chance. I had a vision... the true gods of Bajor came to me and asked me to serve them. Winn is chilled to the bone at his words. WINN The "true gods"... ? DUKAT (nods) The Pah-wraiths. They led me to you. WINN No... DUKAT They're not evil. They care about Bajor. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 34. 28 CONTINUED: (2) WINN No... DUKAT They want to make it strong. But Dukat has gone too far too fast. Winn reacts swiftly and violently. She wrenches away from his grasp and HITS him across the face, catching Dukat completely off-guard. He staggers back. WINN HERETIC! DUKAT Listen to me! WINN GET AWAY!! He catches her wrists and forces her to listen. DUKAT Enough! The Prophets have done nothing for you. During the Occupation, they turned their backs and let our people suffer. WINN Let me go! DUKAT You've sacrificed everything for them, and how have they rewarded you? By choosing an alien to be their Emissary. They've rejected you at every turn. Even now they won't speak to you. WINN (calling over her shoulder) Solbor! Dukat claps a hand over her mouth and whispers into her ear. DUKAT The Pah-wraiths will give you everything you've ever dreamed of -- power, the adoration of your people. In spite of all your protestations of humility, that's what you've always wanted. Admit it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT THREE 34A. 28 CONTINUED: (3) DUKAT (Cont'd) Stop pretending to be something that you're not. Take what they're offering you. Winn twists herself free and wheels on him with wild eyes. WINN Get out. DUKAT So be it. Go crawling back to your Prophets. Beg their forgiveness. Live the rest of your life in Sisko's shadow. With a last look her way, he turns and EXITS. She backs up against the wall and then slides down to the floor, where she sits in abject grief while the Orb looks down at her in silent judgement... KAI WINN'S QUARTERS - LIVING ROOM Solbor ushers Kira -- now in uniform -- into the room. Solbor removed his outer vestments some time earlier in the night, and his tired expression tells us Winn's been keeping him working all hours lately. SOLBOR Colonel Kira to see you, eminence. Winn is sitting on the couch in her vestments and cap. She's pulled herself together somewhat, but the strain and fatigue are still there just below the surface. She gestures that Kira sit -- WINN Come in, child. Thank you for seeing me at such a late hour. Solbor bows and EXITS -- KIRA What can I do for you? Winn considers how best to proceed. WINN I've often sensed that you don't approve of how I've conducted myself as Kai -- that you believe I've put my own political interests ahead of our people's spiritual well-being. Kira has no way of knowing where Winn is going with this. Her silence confirms Winn's statement. WINN (pained) I wish I could say I disagreed with that assessment... Kira is utterly nonplussed by Winn's admission. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT FOUR 37. 31A CONTINUED: Winn's features crumple and anguish creeps into her voice. Kira can see that her pain is genuine -- she kneels in front of her, takes her hand. KIRA (gently) Eminence, when you told me that the Prophets had spoken to you, I prayed that it would open your heart. That it would change you -- WINN I want to change -- I'd do anything to earn their forgiveness. (anguished) But I'm afraid it's too late -- KIRA It's never too late. Even the worst of us can be redeemed. WINN How? KIRA I'm not a Vedek, but it seems to me that you have to set aside the things that led you astray -- ambition, jealousy... WINN (desperate to believe) Yes, I've given in to the temptations of power. KIRA Then turn away from temptation -- DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... KIRA (moved by her remorse) Everything will change once you step down as Kai, you'll see. Winn's features falter. She stares at Kira for a beat. WINN Step down? Kira nods, she thought that was understood. WINN I don't understand. Why would I do that? Bajor needs me. KIRA (I thought we agreed) Eminence, being in power is what led you down the wrong path. WINN But I'm resolved to change. Winn stands and moves to the window. WINN (rationalizing) Don't you see? Once I've regained the Prophets' trust, I'll be better able to serve them if I remain Kai. Kira sits back as the realization dawns that Winn isn't willing to do what it takes -- she's still the same political animal she's always been. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT FOUR 38A. 31A CONTINUED: (3) WINN If the Prophets wanted me to step down, surely they would have told me so. Kira stands and turns to her. When she speaks it's without judgment -- she's holding out hope that the Kai might still come around. KIRA They don't always use words to make their wishes known. Sometimes they speak to us by touching our hearts. And only you would know if they've done that. Winn knows full well that Kira's asking her to be honest with herself. She does her best to rationalize staying in office, but it comes out wan and unconvincing. WINN Bajor needs me... KIRA Good night, eminence. And with that, Kira turns and EXITS. Weyoun lets the laughter die in his throat at the sight of Damar, shooting Thot Gor a sidelong glance. Damar gets the feeling that they were just laughing about him. WEYOUN Damar. There you are. I want you to hear this. Thot Gor had an interesting observation regarding our forces along the Romulan border. In his view, we have failed to take advantage of several weaknesses in their defenses. DAMAR Is that so. WEYOUN For instance, their colony in the Unroth System is ripe for attack. Their long-range sensor array is being repaired and... Damar suddenly sees something on his monitor that deeply shocks him. DAMAR Septimus Three has fallen! WEYOUN Excuse me? DAMAR Septimus Three -- an entire Cardassian Order has been wiped out! (beat) The sacrifice made by the Eleventh Order was not in vain. They forced the Klingons to commit valuable troops and resources to capture a strategically worthless planet. Thot Gor issues a burst of STATIC. WEYOUN I'm glad you agree. DAMAR Well, I don't! You condemned a half million loyal Cardassians -- WEYOUN If they were truly loyal, then they died willingly for the Dominion. There can be no greater sacrifice. DAMAR And how many more of these sacrifices will my people be asked to make? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT FOUR 41. 32 CONTINUED: (2) WEYOUN (coolly) Your people? We are all one with the Dominion. Vorta, Cardassian, Jem'Hadar, now Breen -- we all serve the Founders and we'll all make whatever sacrifices they deem necessary. Weyoun holds Damar's seething gaze for a moment, then turns back to Thot Gor. WEYOUN (pleasantly) Thot Gor, would you mind reiterating your plans for the Unroth System? I seem to have lost my train of thought. Damar stalks out of the room. Thot Gor issues STATIC once he's gone. WEYOUN (to Thot Gor) Yes, I know. Ezri Tigan's contribution to the Dax legacy... will be to end it. WORF There is no honor in self-pity. EZRI You know Worf, I've had just about enough of your little Klingon aphorisms. The only reason I came on this mission was to save your miserable life, so the least you can do is stop acting like a self-righteous targ. WORF Your motives for finding me were not honorable. EZRI Do you really think I disobeyed orders, and risked my life so I could seduce you? I hate to burst your bubble Worf, but it wasn't that good. WORF Always the barb, always the joke. EZRI Let's cut right to the heart of the matter. Do you really love me -- me? Ezri? WORF You are trying to turn this around and make it about me... EZRI Answer the question. Do you love me? WORF I made my feelings clear back on Goralis Three. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Strange... " - REV. 03/19/99 - ACT FOUR 44. 34 CONTINUED: (2) EZRI What is it, Worf? Could it be that you're feeling guilty? That you don't have the same feelings for me that you had for Jadzia? If that's true, maybe we both made a mistake back on Goralis. So maybe we both should be forgiven. Fury flashes in Worf's eyes, but he pulls back. WORF This night would be better spent preparing ourselves for the next life, rather than rehashing the mistakes of this one. But in this case, it is... appropriate. From the moment I first saw you on the station, I knew that you were not Jadzia. And yet I also knew that a part of her was still alive within you. On Goralis, I allowed myself to see her... instead of you. EZRI I felt the same way. A part of me -- the part that was your wife -- wanted very much to be close to you. WORF I realize that Jadzia saw... physical love very differently than I do. To her it could have many meanings... but to me it is a... deeply spiritual act. The two Guards slump to the floor dead, revealing Damar standing there with a phaser in his hand. Worf and Ezri are dumbfounded. Damar quickly strips the dead soldiers of their weapons. DAMAR There's a Cardassian patrol ship sitting in Launch Bay Three-A, two levels above us. Its computer has all the necessary information to get you past our security checkpoints. EZRI Why are you doing this? DAMAR I want you to give a message to the Federation -- tell them that they have an ally on Cardassia. He holds out the phasers for them to take.
