My favorite Human food. He pops it in his mouth and chews it. 2 NEW ANGLE To include SISKO and JAKE, who are sharing their dinner with Nog. It's calamari pasta with a brownish sauce. NOG (talking with his mouth full) Mmm. Delicious, sir. JAKE Terrific as always, Dad. SISKO I'm glad you like it. NOG Sir... if I may say so... this sauce tastes very familiar. SISKO It should. It's puree of tube grubs. A disgusted Jake drops his fork. JAKE Tube grubs? SISKO I figured if Nog is willing to eat squid, it's only fair that we try tube grubs. Besides, you said it was terrific. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - TEASER 2. 2 CONTINUED: JAKE That was before I knew what it was. SISKO Eat. You need more meat on your bones. Jake reluctantly picks up his fork and resumes eating. SISKO So, Nog... how do you like working security? NOG It's... very interesting, sir. JAKE That's not what you told me. NOG (sharp) Jake. SISKO Something wrong? NOG No, sir. Everything's quite satisfactory. Thank you, sir. JAKE Could've fooled me. Nog glares at Jake. SISKO Cadet, if there's a problem, I want to hear about it. Nog doesn't really want to talk about this, but... NOG Well, sir... It's the Klingons, sir. SISKO What about them? NOG It's their... attitude, sir. It's bad. SISKO Bad? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - TEASER 3. 2 CONTINUED: (2) Nog warms up to the subject. NOG They're loud, obnoxious, and if I may say so sir, generally intoxicated. They walk around the station like they own the place. And whenever a station security officer tries to talk to them, say to ask them to keep the noise level down on the Promenade... they ignore him. JAKE You mean they ignore you. Nog's chagrined. He hates to admit it, but it's true. NOG They never look me in the eye when I talk to them, sir. They just stare over my head and pretend I'm not even there. (a beat) I hate it when they do that. SISKO I can see how that might be annoying. JAKE Not as annoying as listening to him complain about it all the time. SISKO Here's what I suggest, cadet. Next time the Klingons refuse to acknowledge your presence... do what a Klingon would do. Confront them about it. If you stand up to them, you'll earn their respect. JAKE Or get your butt kicked... one or the other. SISKO Either way, they'll never ignore you again. Just then, the door CHIMES. SISKO Enter. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - TEASER 4. 3 ANGLE ON THE DOOR As General MARTOK, the commander of DS9's Klingon garrison, ENTERS. MARTOK Captain, I need to speak to you. (without looking at Jake or Nog) Alone. Nog throws down his napkin and stands up, ready to confront Martok. NOG That does it. SISKO (a word to the wise) Not now, Nog. NOG But sir... Jake takes a hold of Nog's arm. JAKE Let's go. Jake half drags Nog out the door. 4 CLOSE ON SISKO AND MARTOK Martok's attention remains focused on Sisko. MARTOK Captain, my crew and I were patrolling the Cardassian border, and we intercepted a very disturbing message. He hands Sisko a Klingon PADD. Sisko looks at the readout. SISKO (surprised) This is a Maquis code. MARTOK I was as surprised as you. I thought the Maquis had been wiped out by Cardassia and their Dominion allies. But it would appear I was mistaken. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - TEASER 5. 4 CONTINUED: SISKO Were you able to decode it? Martok reaches out and hits a button on the PADD. 5 CLOSE ON THE PADD (OPTICAL) As the numerical data is replaced by the face of an attractive Maquis Woman in her early thirties. Let's call her REBECCA. REBECCA Michael. I hope you get this message. We've launched the missiles. They should reach Cardassia in thirteen days. It may not bring back our dead, but at least they're going to have a lot of company. The message ends. 6 CLOSE ON SISKO AND MARTOK Now Sisko looks as worried as Martok. SISKO Did you detect any missiles? MARTOK No. But that proves nothing. (a reluctant admission) A few months ago, the Klingon high council decided to aid the Maquis in their fight against Cardassia. We provided them with thirty Class- Four cloaking devices. It was our understanding that they would use them on their ships. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - TEASER 6. 6 CONTINUED: SISKO But they could've been mounted on missiles instead. MARTOK You see the problem. SISKO The Maquis had access to tricobalt explosives, biogenic weapons, anti- matter warheads... MARTOK The death toll could be in the millions. Sisko still doesn't want to believe it. SISKO I knew the Maquis were desperate, but I can't believe they'd resort to something like this. MARTOK A saber bear is most deadly when it is trapped without hope of escape. SISKO Cardassia's under Dominion protection. If millions of their citizens are killed by human terrorists, they'll demand revenge. MARTOK And their new Dominion allies will see that they get it. They'll launch a counterstrike against the Federation, the Klingon Empire, the entire Alpha Quadrant. SISKO And begin a war that could destroy us all. 7 CLOSE ON SISKO As he reacts to the enormity of the problem and we... FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT ONE 7. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes) 8 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) The Defiant docks at the station. 9 INT. OPS DAX and WORF ENTER from the turbolift, where they're met by Sisko. SISKO Report. Worf and Dax fill Sisko in as they walk toward the Ops table where O'BRIEN is running a diagnostic. DAX Do the words "needle in a haystack" mean anything to you? WORF We spent over fifty hours searching the Badlands for signs of the Maquis missiles. Without success. DAX We would've stayed longer, but we had a hard time avoiding Jem'Hadar patrols. O'BRIEN Let me guess... they homed in on your plasma wake. DAX (nods) Even though we were cloaked, they were still able to track us. O'BRIEN (to Sisko) The Defiant's warp engines are too powerful. They ionize the nebular gases in the Badlands. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT ONE 8. 9 CONTINUED: DAX It's like a Ligorian mastodon moving through the forest. You may not be able to see it, but it definitely makes the leaves rustle. SISKO I need answers, people. If those missiles exist, they're only eleven days from their target. I want to know where they are and how to stop them. WORF We need more information. A way to narrow our search. SISKO I think I know someone who can help. And as Dax and Worf wait to hear Sisko's plan... CUT TO: 10 OMITTED 11 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) On a Federation-style Starbase. 12 INT. STARBASE BRIG Close on MICHAEL EDDINGTON, former leader of the Maquis, who's asleep on his bunk. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT ONE 9. 12 CONTINUED: SISKO (O.S.) Eddington. Wake up. Eddington's eyes open. His lack of enthusiasm at what he sees is palpable. EDDINGTON I'm dreaming, right? This is a nightmare. 13 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) To reveal Sisko, standing outside Eddington's cell, flanked by two Starfleet Security Officers. SISKO It's a nightmare, all right. But you're wide awake. Eddington sits up on his bunk. EDDINGTON I was wondering when you'd show up. I expected to see you here weeks ago. SISKO I've been busy. EDDINGTON But now you're here. So enjoy yourself. Savor the moment. I know you've been wanting to gloat over my defeat for a long time. SISKO I'm not here to gloat. EDDINGTON You deserve to. You won. I betrayed Starfleet by joining the Maquis. You swore you'd track me down, and you did. You got your revenge. SISKO Actually, that's what I'm here to talk to you about. Revenge. EDDINGTON One of my favorite topics. DEEP SPACE NINE: "B1aze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT ONE 9A. 13 CONTINUED: Sisko nods to one of the security officers. He deactivates the security field. SISKO I believe this was intended for you. 14 ANGLE ON EDDINGTON (OPTICAL) Sisko tosses him a PADD. As the security field is turned back on, Eddington takes the PADD and activates it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT ONE 10. 14 CONTINUED: Rebecca, the Maquis Woman we saw in the teaser, appears on the screen. It's the same message Martok gave to Sisko. REBECCA (on the monitor) Michael. I hope you get this message. We've launched the missiles. They should reach Cardassia in thirteen days. Eddington turns it off, interrupting the playback. SISKO Don't you want to hear the rest? EDDINGTON Why should I? It has nothing to do with me. Michael is a very common name. SISKO True. But somehow I think you're the right one. EDDINGTON Guess again. Eddington lays back down. As far as he's concerned, this meeting is over. SISKO (trying to stay calm) If those missiles hit Cardassia it could start a war. Billions of people could be killed. EDDINGTON If you expect me to shed a tear, you're going to be disappointed. I used up all my tears when the Dominion slaughtered the Maquis. I sat here in this cell for three days and listened to the reports as they came in. In those three days, everyone and everything I cared about was wiped out. SISKO I heard the same reports. It was a tragedy. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT ONE 11. 14 CONTINUED: (2) Eddington laughs bitterly. EDDINGTON (sarcastic) Your generosity of spirit touches me. (a beat) But you don't give a damn about what happened to us. And I don't give a damn about what happens to you. SISKO I don't believe that. You may've taken off the uniform, but you're still a Starfleet officer. And you don't want a war between the Federation and the Dominion any more than I do. EDDINGTON What you want and what I want doesn't really matter. There's nothing either one of us can do to stop those missiles from hitting their targets. They're cloaked, highly maneuverable, programmed to change course at random. You'll never find them. Sisko thinks this over. SISKO All right. Maybe we can't locate the missiles, but that doesn't mean we can't stop them. You must've programmed in an abort code, a way to deactivate the missiles by remote. EDDINGTON Even if there was such a thing... you'd have to transmit it from the launch site. And I don't think you're going to find that, either. No code, no launch site... I'm afraid you're out of luck, captain. (a self-satisfied smile) Looks like everyone's out of luck. But Sisko doesn't look ready to give up just yet. SISKO That's it? You're just going to lie here and do nothing. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT ONE 11A. 14 CONTINUED: (3) EDDINGTON That's what you do when you're in prison. Nothing. Just sit back and wait for the next counseling session, the next psychological evaluation, the next rehabilitation seminar. SISKO What if I could get you out of here? Arrange a pardon in exchange for helping me. EDDINGTON You like this, don't you, Ben? You like deciding the fate of others. It makes you feel important. SISKO This isn't about me. Do you want your freedom, or not? Eddington thinks it over. EDDINGTON Freedom, huh? Tell me, if they did release me, where would I go? What would I do? SISKO Anything you want. EDDINGTON What about bringing the Maquis back from the dead? Can I do that? Can you? Can anyone? Sisko doesn't respond. EDDINGTON No. I didn't think so. In that case, I'll tell you what I want. I want to lie here until the Jem'Hadar blow this place to pieces... and me along with it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT ONE 12. 15 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Re-establishing. 16 INT. INFIRMARY BASHIR is treating QUARK, who's got a nasty cut over his left eye. QUARK (flinching away) Careful. That hurts. BASHIR I haven't done anything yet. QUARK Well, what are you waiting for? I told you. It hurts. Just then, ODO and KIRA ENTER. ODO You'll survive. QUARK Did you catch him? ODO We caught him. Or I should say... Major Kira caught him. KIRA I didn't really do anything. I was in the Bajoran shrine, meditating, and he burst in, stark naked, and fell to his knees, crying out to the Prophets for protection. BASHIR Morn. of all people. Who would've thought he'd snap like that? ODO Certainly not me. Which makes me wonder... (looking at Quark) What could've pushed him over the edge? Quark responds with self-righteous indignation. QUARK Why are you looking at me? I'm the victim here. He hit me with a barstool. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT ONE 13. 16 CONTINUED: KIRA But why did he hit you? QUARK I don't have the faintest idea. KIRA Think harder. ODO Witnesses say you were talking to him right up to the second he went berserk. QUARK Of course I was talking to him. That's what bartenders are supposed to do. Talk to their customers. KIRA And what exactly was it that you were talking to him about? QUARK All I said was that the military personnel on this station were starting to look a little nervous. And when they get nervous, I get nervous. ODO That's all you said? QUARK Basically. (a begrudging admission) I might've done a little harmless theorizing. BASHIR About what? QUARK Oh... something like... it was only a matter of time before the Dominion launched a full-scale assault on the Federation and that when that happened the station would undoubtedly be their first target. He stops, but the others just stare at him, waiting for more. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT ONE 14. 16 CONTINUED: (2) QUARK And I might've idly suggested that there wasn't a hope in hell of any of us getting out of here alive. ODO And that's when he hit you with the barstool and ran out onto the Promenade screaming "We're all doomed." QUARK Some people just don't react well to stress. Suddenly Dax's Com Voice cuts in... DAX'S COM VOICE Ops to Major Kira. KIRA Go ahead. DAX'S COM VOICE There's an incoming transmission from Captain Sisko. KIRA I'll be right there. (to Quark) Probably wants to warn us that the first wave of Jem'Hadar is on the way. She EXITS. QUARK (calling after her) Very funny. But now Quark's feeling a little stressed. QUARK (to Bashir and Odo) She is joking, right? But neither Odo nor Bashir feel like holding Quark's hand right now. Bashir goes to work on the cut. BASHIR (no sympathy) Hold still. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT ONE 15. 17 INT. CAPTAIN'S OFFICE (OPTICAL) Kira is talking to Sisko, who's seated in the runabout cockpit. Intercut as necessary. SISKO (on monitor) My plan is to go into the Badlands, find the launching site, and deactivate those missiles. KIRA You make it sound so easy. You sure you don't want me to send the Defiant. SISKO (on monitor) The Defiant would just attract unwanted attention. KIRA Maybe. But I'd feel a hell of a lot better if you weren't out there alone. SISKO (on monitor) Don't worry, major. I'm not alone. CUT TO: 18 INT. RUNABOUT As Sisko turns and looks over at one of the side passenger seats. 19 NEW ANGLE To reveal a handcuffed Michael Eddington, sitting in the passenger seat, glaring mutinously at Sisko. 20 SISKO Who's got a phaser on his belt, turns forward to pilot the ship. We hold on the two of them, side by side for a beat, then... FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 16. ACT TWO FADE IN: 21 INT. RUNABOUT Sisko comes from the back carrying two plates of food, one of which he sets down in front of Eddington. SISKO Dinner. Eddington holds up his handcuffed hands. EDDINGTON What about these? SISKO What about them? EDDINGTON Makes it a little difficult to eat. SISKO You'll manage. Sisko sits down to eat his own dinner. Eddington awkwardly takes a bite. EDDINGTON Replicator entree number one-oh- three: Curried chicken and rice with a side order of carrots. Or at least that's what they want us to believe. But you and I both know what we're really eating. Replicated protein molecules and textured carbohydrates. SISKO It's not that bad. EDDINGTON It may look like chicken, but it still tastes like replicated protein molecules to me. SISKO If you don't want it, don't eat it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 16. 21 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON Remember that Thanksgiving dinner you cooked for the senior staff last year? How many months did it take you to grow all those vegetables in the hydroponic garden? Every ingredient fresh... real. (a beat) Though you did put too much tarragon in the stuffing. SISKO I wasn't aware you were a food critic. EDDINGTON I wasn't. Until I joined the Maquis and started eating real food. Food that I'd grown with my own hands. Fresh corn. As sweet as a baby's smile. And tomatoes. Do you know how hard it is to grow tomatoes? There's always too much rain... or not enough. It's too hot, it's too cold. (a beat) I wonder what happened to those tomato plants. (bitter) Probably burned to the ground along with everything else. Disgusted with the food, Eddington gets up and puts his tray in the replicator. SISKO If we don't stop those missiles, a lot of things are going to burn to the ground. And not just on Cardassia. EDDINGTON You never give up, do you, Ben? Here we are, having a pleasant conversation about food, and all you're thinking about is the mission. And how to get me to cooperate. (a beat) You're wasting your breath. As far as I'm concerned my life is over. I'm dead. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 17A. 21 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO For a dead man, you talk a lot. EDDINGTON (smiles) Then why didn't you leave me in prison? SISKO Because I have a job to do and I can't do it without you. EDDINGTON You're going to have to. I told you when you dragged me out of my cell that I wasn't going to help you. I meant it then and I mean it now. Sisko gets up and crosses to Eddington. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 18. 21 CONTINUED: (3) SISKO I'm trying to prevent a war. EDDINGTON You're the one who set the ground rules when you came after me, Ben. You're the one who made it personal. You could've looked the other way. You could've left the Maquis alone. But you didn't do it. You hunted us. Hounded us. Fought us every chance you got. And in the end, you set us up for the slaughter. (a beat) I expected better of you than that. So did a lot of people. People like Cal Hudson. That name gets Sisko's attention. EDDINGTON (continuing) I bet you haven't heard that name in a while. SISKO (softly) You're right about that. EDDINGTON He told me the two of your were friends at the Academy. SISKO And a long time after that. EDDINGTON Until he joined the Maquis. Sisko reacts with more sadness than anger. SISKO He betrayed his oath to Starfleet. EDDINGTON If it makes you feel any better, he paid for his "sins." He was killed in a skirmish with the Cardassians. Sisko turns away to hide his emotions from Eddington. He's taking this hard. SISKO He was a good man. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 19. 21 CONTINUED: (4) EDDINGTON He felt the same way about you. (a beat) He thought you were wrong about the Maquis. But he forgave you. Which is ironic, considering you never forgave him. You can't forgive any of us. And not because we betrayed Starfleet or the Federation... but because we betrayed you. Sisko doesn't answer this. He's still reeling from the news of Cal Hudson's death. EDDINGTON (going in for the kill) That's what this is all about. Your ego. Where Benjamin Sisko leads, all must follow. Sisko turns back to Eddington. SISKO Is that what you believe? Eddington gets in Sisko's face. EDDINGTON It's the truth, isn't it? The Maquis were never much of a threat to the Federation. But we were a threat to you. Our existence was a stain on your record. And you couldn't have that. Not when you were so busy measuring yourself for an admiral's uniform. Sisko's had enough. SISKO You want to blame me for what happened to the Maquis? Fine. Go ahead. Blame me. Blame Starfleet. Blame the Federation. Blame everyone but Michael Eddington. EDDINGTON (defensive) The Maquis won its greatest victories under my leadership. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 20. 21 CONTINUED: (5) SISKO (sarcastic) Your leadership. Your shining moment of glory. Michael Eddington gets to take off his gold uniform and play hero. Isn't that what you always wanted? To lead troops in a glorious cause. (cold) Well, you had your chance. And look where you led them. Right into their graves. This takes some of the wind out of Eddington's sails. EDDINGTON They died because I wasn't there when they needed me most. Because you put me in jail. SISKO They died because you filled their heads with false hopes. Sold them dreams of a military victory when what they needed was a negotiated peace. EDDINGTON We had the Cardassians on the run. SISKO And they ran right into the arms of the Dominion. (a beat) End of story. Sisko's had his say. He sits down. EDDINGTON Not quite the end. SISKO That's right. A few survivors from your noble crusade have decided to launch a pointless retaliatory strike against Cardassia. EDDINGTON It's not so pointless. If you can't have victory, sometimes you just have to settle for revenge. Eddington takes his seat. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 21. 21 CONTINUED: (6) SISKO Is that what you want? To be remembered as the man who helped bring about the worst war in Federation history? EDDINGTON Not quite the legacy I had in mind, but I can live with it. SISKO Can you? 22 CLOSE ON EDDINGTON As he turns away from Sisko, not giving an inch. 23 INT. QUARK'S Close on two Klingons playing the Klingon head-butting game as Martok and a fourth Klingon watch. MARTOK (loudly egging them on) You can do better than that. You're barely making contact. The Klingons go at it even harder. We... PAN TO: 24 NOG Sitting at a table watching the Klingons with a steely look in his eyes. He's rocked his chair back a la Henry Fonda in "My Darling Clementine" and is balancing himself on the back two legs. Jake sits next to him, feet firmly on the floor. There's a CRACK as the Klingons bang heads. Jake winces. JAKE I don't care what anyone says. That has got to hurt. NOG They're at sixty-five decibels. Loud, but not loud enough. JAKE What are you talking about? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 22. 24 CONTINUED: NOG Five more decibels and they'll be legally disturbing the peace. JAKE And then what? NOG And then I'm going to escort them to a holding cell. Jake can't believe what he's hearing. He waits to see if Nog's going to smile. But the Ferengi doesn't crack a grin. JAKE You're going to arrest General Martok for disturbing the peace? NOG I am. JAKE Aren't you going to at least call for some backup? NOG Jake, you heard what your father said. They won't respect me until I stand up to them. Alone. JAKE Personally, I think respect is overrated. Nog concentrates, still rocking his chair as he monitors the noise level. An especially loud round of laughter comes from the Klingon table. NOG That's it. Seventy decibels. They're mine. But as Nog pushes his leg away from the table to get up, he shoves to hard and rocks back out of control. For a moment he teeters awkwardly, then with a loud... NOG Whoaaa! Nog crashes backward to the ground. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 23. 25 NEW ANGLE Everything stops in the bar. Martok and the Klingons look over at Nog, and then explode with laughter. Jake goes to check on Nog. JAKE You okay? Nog lies on his back and looks up at Jake. NOG I'm fine. Just tell me when everyone leaves. JAKE Why? NOG Because I'm not getting up until they do. 26 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) The Runabout enters the swirling plasma storms of the Badlands. 27 INT. RUNABOUT Sisko's at the controls. We can see the light of the Badlands reflecting off his face. He's notices something on a panel. SISKO Eddington... Eddington, who was asleep in the other chair, opens his eyes. EDDINGTON Are we there yet? SISKO Where? EDDINGTON (smiles) That's the question, isn't it? Sisko doesn't respond to Eddington's jibe. SISKO There's something here I want you to see. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 24. 27 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON I'll pass, thanks. SISKO Suit yourself. It could be nothing. It's hard to get an accurate sensor reading in the Badlands. But if I'm not mistaken, there're two Jem'Hadar warships headed our way. Eddington lifts his head up, and for a moment it looks like this is a situation that might engage his attention. EDDINGTON (looks at the readouts) Yeah. Those are Jem'Hadar warships all right. You've got a problem. SISKO We both do. (a beat) They're getting closer. One AU away. Point Nine AU. You said you wanted to get blown to bits by the Jem'Hadar. Looks like you're going to get your wish. EDDINGTON I have faith in you, Captain. You'll get us out of this. SISKO Not me, Mister Eddington. I don't know the Badlands that well. Sisko leans over and unlocks Eddington's restraints. SISKO (continuing) But you do. Sisko gets up and moves to the back. That gets Eddington's attention. EDDINGTON Where are you going? SISKO To get a raktajino. EDDINGTON Now? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 24A. 27 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO My throat's a little dry. Eddington looks over at the empty pilot's chair and then back at Sisko. SISKO (to the replicator) One raktajino. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 25. 27 CONTINUED: (3) EDDINGTON You're crazy. They're almost on top of us. Sisko sips his raktajino. SISKO I'll say one thing about these replicators. They make good Klingon coffee. Suddenly an alarm goes off on the control panel. EDDINGTON They're scanning us. SISKO Should be in firing range any minute now. EDDINGTON Very clever, captain. But it's not going to work. I am not going to take the helm. SISKO Fine. EDDINGTON That is what you're trying to do. Sisko just takes another sip of raktajino. EDDINGTON (insistent) Isn't it? SISKO I'm just trying to see how serious this death wish of yours really is. I'm betting it doesn't even exist. Just like I'm betting you won't be able to sit back and let your friends start a war that could destroy the Alpha Quadrant. EDDINGTON That's an awfully big bet. SISKO I don't think so. Eddington knows his bluff has been called but he hates to give Sisko the satisfaction. SISKO (a challenge) Point Seven AU. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 25A. 27 CONTINUED: (4) Eddington has no choice. He throws himself into the pilot's seat and begins maneuvering the runabout. It banks hard to the right. Sisko almost loses his balance. He recovers, then steps up behind Eddington and watches him pilot the ship. SISKO Can you lose them? EDDINGTON (nods) I plotted a spiral course around a plasma filament. It should dissipate our warp signature. SISKO Very fancy. EDDINGTON You can take over now. SISKO I don't think so. Sisko sits down in the passenger seat and stretches his legs out, getting comfortable. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT TWO 26. 27 CONTINUED: (5) EDDINGTON Let's get one thing straight, captain. I'll get you to the launch site. And I'll help you deactivate those missiles. But then you and I are going to have it out once and for all. SISKO If you want a fight, mister, I'll give you one. EDDINGTON I don't intend to fight you, captain. (a beat) I intend to kill you. They exchange a hard look and then Eddington slowly turns back to the control panels. 28 CLOSE ON SISKO As he studies Eddington and takes a sip of his coffee. He doesn't doubt that Eddington means exactly what he says. FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 27. ACT THREE FADE IN: 29 INT. RUNABOUT Eddington is at the helm. Sisko stands at the rear platform. EDDINGTON Captain... when I joined the Maquis, I left some personal items behind on the station. SISKO As far as I know, all your things were put in storage. EDDINGTON You didn't happen to see an old Earth coin, about this big... (indicates) With a bird on the front? SISKO Bird? EDDINGTON A loon, actually. My lucky looney. It's an old Canadian coin. Been in the family for over two hundred years. SISKO It's probably in a locker in the Assay Office, along with the rest of your things. EDDINGTON I hope so. I'd hate to think I lost it. Sisko reacts to something he sees on the back panel. SISKO Speaking of things you thought you'd lost... The proximity alarm goes off again. 30 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) Two Jem'Hadar ships move through the Badlands. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 28. 31 INT. RUNABOUT As Eddington reacts to the same readings Sisko saw. EDDINGTON Damn. There's no way those Jem'Hadar ships could've tracked us. SISKO Obviously there is. Can you lose them again? EDDINGTON Dissipating our warp signature didn't work. SISKO Don't tell me the Maquis didn't have a Plan B. EDDINGTON You're not going to like it. SISKO Half an AU and closing. If you have a plan I guarantee I'll learn love it. EDDINGTON We're going to have to realign the impulse flow regulators. SISKO You mean shut down the engines? They'd be on us in a second. EDDINGTON Who said anything about shutting down the engines? SISKO You're thinking of realigning the emitter while the engines are engaged? One wrong move and the flow regulators will explode in your face. EDDINGTON You mean, in your face. I'll be piloting the ship. When you finish, we can use the impulse exhaust to detonate the plasma field behind us. Even if the Jem'Hadar survive the blast, the shockwave should wipe out any trace of our ion wake. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 29. 31 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON (Cont'd) (looks at the panel) Point four AU and closing. You'd better get started. SISKO Hold the ship steady. I don't want any accidents. EDDINGTON I'll do my best. Sisko stares at Eddington. He knows he has to put his life in the hands of a man he doesn't trust and it doesn't come easy. Sisko EXITS. Eddington turns back to his panel and smiles. He's enjoying this. 32 INT. RUNABOUT - JEFFERIES TUBE This is similar to the Jefferies Tubes on the Defiant, a tight space lined with power relays and system controls. Sisko crawls in, carrying a tool kit. He pops off a panel. Inside, along with the usual circuits there's a sealed metal box marked with hazard indicators. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 30. 32 CONTINUED: Sisko takes a deep breath to steady himself, then carefully begins to open the box. COMPUTER VOICE Warning. Attempting to access impulse flow regulators while engines are engaged is not recommended. SISKO Tell me something I don't know. (a beat) Disengage safeties. Authorization Sisko A four seven one. COMPUTER VOICE Acknowledged. Safeties disengaged. The Runabout goes to Red Alert. Sisko opens the box. Inside there're a half dozen pulsing power relays. Sisko takes out a tool and reaches over to begin carefully disconnecting one of the relays. Just then, the ship rocks and Sisko bangs the tool against the side of the box. SISKO (hits his combadge) Dammit, Eddington, I told you to hold this ship steady. 33 INT. RUNABOUT Eddington's at the controls. EDDINGTON Sorry, captain. We ran into a pocket of boron gas. 34 INT. RUNABOUT - JEFFERIES TUBE Sisko tries to keep his anger in check. SISKO (to com) Well, don't do it again. Sisko reaches out again for the relay. As he disconnects it, it sparks. He disconnects a second relay. He feels the ship shudder and stops, waiting for it to pass. Finally, when he thinks the ship is steady enough he continues his work. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 31. 34 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON'S COM VOICE You still there, captain? SISKO Disappointed? EDDINGTON'S COM VOICE Just checking. Sisko crosswires the two relays. The relays spark ominously. 35 INT. RUNABOUT Eddington looks with concern at the readouts. EDDINGTON (to com) Captain, I hate to rush you, but things are going to get very unpleasant if we don't get out of here soon. 36 INT. RUNABOUT - JEFFERIES TUBE Sisko is crosswiring another set of relays. SISKO I'm aware of the problem. The ship rocks again. SISKO (frustrated) Eddington. 37 INT. RUNABOUT Eddington pilots for all he's worth. EDDINGTON That wasn't me. They're firing at us. 38 INT. RUNABOUT - JEFFERIES TUBE Sisko hastily finishes the job. SISKO In that case... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 32. 38 CONTINUED: Sisko slams closed the box. SISKO ... let her rip. 39 INT. RUNABOUT Eddington hits a control. 40 EXT. SPACE The plasma behind the Runabout explodes. The shockwave blasts the pursuing Jem'Hadar and sends the Runabout shooting forward. 41 INT. RUNABOUT - JEFFERIES TUBE The ship shakes violently. Sisko is thrown around and goes head first into one wall of the crawlspace. He lies there half conscious as the ship continues to shudder. 42 OMITTED 43 INT. RUNABOUT Eddington looks like he's been tossed around, but he's all right. In fact, he's a little pumped up by the experience. EDDINGTON Well, that got the adrenaline pumping. (to com) No sign of the Jem'Hadar, Captain. Looks like we lost them. Eddington deactivates the Red Alert. He waits for a response from Sisko. There isn't any. EDDINGTON Captain? (urgent) Captain! Still no response. Eddington gets up. EDDINGTON Computer, locate Captain Sisko. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 33. 43 CONTINUED: COMPUTER VOICE Internal sensors are off-line. EDDINGTON Of course they are. Eddington gets up to check himself, but as he turns he's grabbed by... 44 NEW ANGLE Sisko. Blood trickles down his face from a forehead wound. He doesn't look like he's in a celebratory mood. Sisko shoves Eddington against the bulkhead. SISKO I told you to keep the ship steady. EDDINGTON You're alive. What a pleasant surprise. SISKO I'm sure. Sisko shoves Eddington toward the pilot's chair. SISKO Now, get us to that launch site. Eddington takes a seat and Sisko sits down in the passenger's chair. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 34. 45 INT. PROMENADE Jake and Nog are walking along the Promenade. JAKE All I'm saying, Nog, is next time you know I have a girl over, call me before you come home. NOG The two of you were only talking. JAKE Yeah, but you never know. NOG Jake, I know your track record. You never get past talking. JAKE That is a scurrilous lie. NOG "Scurrilous?" Is that worse than a regular lie? JAKE I don't see what the big deal is. Just check before you come home, okay? NOG Okay. And you do the same. JAKE Nog, you haven't had a date since you left the Academy. Unless you're counting holosuites. NOG Now who's being scurrilous? Just then, Nog stops in his tracks. He sees something disturbing up ahead. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 35. 45 CONTINUED: NOG I don't believe this. 46 NEW ANGLE - NOG'S POV Martok and two of his officers are standing in Jake and Nog's old spot on the Second Level. 47 ANGLE ON JAKE AND NOG As they react to the Klingons. Jake doesn't see the problem. JAKE What's wrong? NOG They're loitering on the Promenade. In our old spot. JAKE I guess they know a good view when they see one. NOG Don't you get it? They know I'm territorial about that spot. They're purposely doing this to insult me. Nog heads up the stairs. Jake follows him. JAKE Nog, you are definitely getting stranger as you get older. NOG I can't let them do this to me. Nog reaches the top of the stairs and puts a restraining hand on Jake's chest. NOG Stay back, Jake. This could get ugly. 48 NEW ANGLE Nog approaches the Klingons. NOG (screwing up his courage) All right... it's time for you to move along. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 36. 48 CONTINUED: Martok looks down at Nog. MARTOK We will decide when it's time to move. NOG Station regulation eight-two slash seven B clearly states that loitering on the Promenade is prohibited. MARTOK Is that so? Nog stands firm. NOG It is. Now either move... or I'm going to have to place you under arrest. Martok glares down at Nog for a long beat, then bends over until he's nose to nose with the young Ferengi. MARTOK You are either very brave or very stupid, Ferengi. NOG (nervous) Probably a little of both. Martok can't help himself. He laughs. MARTOK Indeed, courage comes in all sizes. (leans over Nog) But don't tempt fate. (to his companion, in Klingon) Khi-GOSH. ("Let's go") They stride off. Jake joins Nog. JAKE Nog. I'm impressed. NOG Klingons. You just have to know how to handle them. Nog struts off, standing a little taller. 49 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) The Runabout enters orbit around a planet. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 37. 50 INT. RUNABOUT Eddington turns to Sisko. EDDINGTON Next stop, Athos Four. A grim little fogbound piece of rock in the middle of nowhere. SISKO What better place to hide a missile launching site? EDDINGTON We thought so. SISKO Sensors aren't detecting anything. EDDINGTON That's the general idea. There's too much interference to detect anything. But it's there. SISKO We'll never get a transporter through all this static. EDDINGTON We don't need to. There's a shuttle pad not far from the launch site. SISKO Then take us down. 51 OMITTED 52 INT. CAVE TUNNEL - NIGHT Sisko and Eddington move through the tunnel, lighting their way with palm beacons. They both carry tricorders. Sisko's armed with a phaser. SISKO How far? EDDINGTON A few kilometers. This tunnel will take us most of the way. Sisko scans the tunnels. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT THREE 38. 52 CONTINUED: SISKO These tunnels are manmade. EDDINGTON I know. I helped dig them myself. They continue walking. CUT TO: 53 EXT. MAQUIS SETTLEMENT - NIGHT A heavy tulle fog partially obstructs our view of this frontier town. There's a well in the center of a small plaza. We hold on the well for a beat. Suddenly we see a hand grab hold of the lip of the well. Eddington pulls himself up out of the well. Sisko follows. SISKO Now where? EDDINGTON Give me a minute to get my bearings. It's been a while. Sisko looks distracted, like he's heard something. SISKO Do you hear something? Eddington listens. We hear movement, but it's muffled by the fog and we're not sure what direction it's coming from. Eddington's about to activate his palm beacon, but Sisko stops him, shakes his head and puts his finger to his lips. Slowly and carefully, they take a few more steps into the fog, both straining to see just a few yards ahead of them. 54 NEW ANGLE - THEIR POV As suddenly two figures emerge from the fog. They're Jem'Hadar soldiers. They're only a few feet away. And off this moment of surprise, we... FADE OUT. END OF ACT THREE DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FOUR 39. ACT FOUR FADE IN: 55 EXT. MAQUIS SETTLEMENT - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS (OPTICAL) The two Jem'Hadar soldiers quickly get over their initial shock of seeing Sisko and Eddington and raise their weapons. Sisko reacts quickly, shoving Eddington out of harm's way and barely getting to cover before the Jem'Hadar open fire. 56 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) On Sisko and Eddington, hiding behind some storage drums. Phaser fire flashes over their heads. Sisko looks approvingly at the drums. SISKO Duridium. That should hold them off for a while. (turns to Eddington) I thought you said the Jem'Hadar would never find this place. EDDINGTON I didn't think they would. (a beat) I was wrong. Eddington looks worried. He searches for an idea. EDDINGTON I say we rush them. In this fog, they'll have as much chance of hitting each other as hitting us. SISKO Too risky. EDDINGTON You never would've made it in the Maquis with that kind of attitude. SISKO It's not me I'm worried about. It's you. If you get killed, there'll be no way to stop the missiles. Sisko thinks for a beat, then hands Eddington the phaser. SISKO Take this. I'll circle around... try to draw their fire. You should be able to catch them off guard when they come after me. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FOUR 40. 56 CONTINUED: There's a stack of pipe lying behind the storage drums. Sisko grabs a piece to use as a makeshift club. EDDINGTON I can barely see two meters in front of me. How will I know what I'm aiming at? SISKO I'll be the one holding the pipe. EDDINGTON Attacking two Jem'Hadar soldiers with a pipe? (sarcastic) That's a brilliant plan. SISKO It could be worse. EDDINGTON I know. It could be me holding the pipe. Sisko slips away into the fog. 57 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) On the two Jem'Hadar, wholre struggling to find their targets in the fog. One of them motions to the other to move to the left. His partner nods, but before he can move out, they hear the BING of a pipe hitting stone. They turn in the direction of the sound. There's another BING. They turn again. The sound is moving to their right. As their bodies shift to the right, anticipating yet another Bing, Sisko suddenly charges out of the fog from their left. He clubs one Jem'Hadar in the head, dazing him. The other spins to fire, but Sisko deflects the rifle as the Jem'Hadar pulls the trigger and the shot goes wide. The stunned Jem'Hadar struggles to his feet, but as he lifts his rifle, he's shot by a phaser. He goes down. Sisko continues his struggle with the remaining Jem'Hadar. 58 ANGLE ON EDDINGTON Who has risen up from behind the drums and is aiming into the darkness and fog. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FOUR 41. 59 NEW ANGLE - EDDINGTON'S POV We can dimly make out two silhouettes fighting in the fog, but'there's no way to tell which one's Sisko and which one's the Jem'Hadar. 60 ANGLE ON EDDINGTON As he takes careful aim with the phaser. 61 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) On Sisko. The remaining Jem'Hadar knocks him to the ground and takes aim with his rifle, but a phaser shot blasts him off his feet. Sisko stands up and turns to see Eddington coming toward him. SISKO You've got sharp eyes. Sisko retrieves a Jem'Hadar rifle. EDDINGTON Not really. I just waited to see which of you was knocked down first, and then I shot the one still standing. SISKO Thanks for the vote of confidence. EDDINGTON I was right, wasn't I? (a beat) Now help me drag these bodies over to the well. Maybe that way the other Jem'Hadar will look for their friends and not for us. Sisko and Eddington each grab a Jem'Hadar by the legs and start pulling them away into the fog. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FOUR 42. 62 EXT. MAQUIS SETTLEMENT - BY THE WELL - NIGHT Minutes later. Sisko pushes the second corpse onto the lip of the well. Just then, the dead Jem'Hadar's communicator sparks to life. JEM'HADAR COM VOICE Patrol team two report... Patrol team two... The voice is cut off as Sisko dumps the body into the well. SISKO In a couple of minutes this whole settlement is going to be crawling with Jem'Hadar. So you'd better get us to that launch site now. Eddington looks around as if trying to get his bearings. EDDINGTON That way. SISKO Are you sure? EDDINGTON Reasonably. That's about the best Sisko can hope for. The two men, each carrying Jem'Hadar rifles, move into the darkness. 63 EXT. MAQUIS SETTLEMENT - STREET - NIGHT Sisko and Eddington move cautiously around a corner. 64 EXT. MAQUIS SETTLEMENT - ANOTHER STREET - NIGHT Sisko and Eddington pick their way carefully through the settlement, aware that they could run across more Jem'Hadar at any moment. 65 EXT. MAQUIS SETTLEMENT - ALLEY - NIGHT Eddington and Sisko come to an intersection. Eddington looks a little confused. He stops to get his bearings. EDDINGTON We're close. SISKO Then let's keep moving. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FOUR 43. 65 CONTINUED: Eddington starts to go one way, but Sisko spots something in the other direction. SISKO Wait. He walks forward. There's something lying on the ground. Sisko examines it. It's a dead human body. Eddington joins him. EDDINGTON Vance. SISKO You knew him? EDDINGTON He was a shuttle pilot... and a friend. Sisko looks up. There's another body farther down the alley. SISKO There're more. Sisko and Eddington move to the next body. They can see yet another body up ahead, at the opening to a plaza. 66 EXT. MAQUIS SETTLEMENT - PLAZA - NIGHT Sisko and Eddington follow the trail of bodies into the plaza. It just gets worse. The courtyard is littered with dead Maquis. It's a nightmarish scene. 67 CLOSE ON EDDINGTON As he walks among the slain. These are people he knows. Friends, comrades in arms. EDDINGTON My God. Eddington stops, stares at the bodies. EDDINGTON This wasn't supposed to happen. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FOUR 44. 67 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON (Cont'd) We were winning. The Cardassian Empire was falling into chaos. The Maquis colonies were going to declare themselves an independent nation. Sisko bends down so that he's close to Eddington. SISKO Eddington, listen to me. This isn't the time. EDDINGTON It's over. SISKO It's not over. We've got to stop those missiles. EDDINGTON That's all you care about? The missiles. SISKO It's too late to help these people. But if we don't stop the missiles, this'll only be the beginning. EDDINGTON I was their leader. I was responsible for them. And I failed. I failed them all. SISKO Maybe we all failed them. Maybe we could've prevented this from happening. I don't know. It's going to take a long time, a lot of soul-searching before I can answer that question. But right now, we have a mission to complete. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FOUR 45. 67 CONTINUED: (2) Eddington looks up at Sisko, and aims the Jem'Hadar rifle at him. EDDINGTON I wish I knew for certain that killing you would make me feel better. Sisko lets the statement hang there in the air between them. EDDINGTON But I suppose that can wait for another time. Eddington gets to his feet and walks on. After a beat, Sisko stands up and follows him. 68 EXT. MAQUIS COMMAND CENTER - NIGHT Close on Sisko and Eddington as they look at a bunker- like building. There're no Jem'Hadar in sight. EDDINGTON That's it. SISKO You're sure. EDDINGTON You want to stand here and argue about it? Come on. It looks clear. Eddington starts to head for the building, but Sisko stops him. SISKO Wait. 69 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) Without warning, Sisko pops up out of cover and sprays the entire side of the building with phaser fire from the Jem'Hadar rifle. Two Jem'Hadar, who've been camouflaged by their chameleon-like cloaking ability, shimmer in as they're blow back against the wall and collapse to the ground. 70 CLOSE ON SISKO AND EDDINGTON Eddington turns to Sisko. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FOUR 46. 70 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON I'm glad one of us remembered they can do that. Sisko and Eddington move forward. 71 NEW ANGLE As they rush to the door. Eddington tries to key in a punch code at the door panel, but nothing happens. Sisko raises his rifle. EDDINGTON No. Wait. I don't want to damage any of the equipment. Let me try something. Eddington wrenches open the panel and manipulates the controls from the inside. The door opens. 72 INT. MAQUIS COMMAND CENTER - NIGHT Close on the door as Sisko and Eddington ENTER. Sisko is stopped short by the surprising sight that greets his eyes. A DOZEN MAQUIS PRISONERS stand in the center of the room, looking expectantly at the door. One of them is Rebecca, the same woman we saw in the recorded message. She steps forward. REBECCA Michael... I was wondering when you'd get here. EDDINGTON I came as soon as I could. Eddington turns to Sisko. EDDINGTON Captain Sisko... I'd like you to meet Rebecca Sullivan... My wife. And as Sisko reacts to this revelation, we... FADE OUT. END OF ACT FOUR DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FIVE 47. ACT FIVE FADE IN: 73 INT. MAQUIS COMMAND CENTER - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS Sisko looks around at the Command Center. There's nothing even remotely resembling a missile launch facility. EDDINGTON All right, we're getting out of here. (to Rebecca and the Maquis) We've got a runabout hidden at the landing site. We can still access the tunnels through the old well. Stick together. Try not to lose each other in the fog. As they all move to the door, Sisko grabs Eddington by the arm. SISKO Wait a minute. What about disarming the missiles? EDDINGTON Look around you, Ben. Does this look like a launch site? Eddington tries to break loose from Sisko's hold, but Sisko only grips him tighter. SISKO I want the truth, Eddington. Now. REBECCA There never were any missiles, no retaliatory strike against Cardassia. It was all a ploy. A way to let Michael know that we'd made it here. EDDINGTON This was our fall back position. But I needed your help to evacuate these people. SISKO What would you have done if I hadn't forced you to come with me? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FIVE 47A. 73 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON (smiles) I would've volunteered. Sisko finally lets go of Eddington. EDDINGTON You should be smiling, Ben. That Dominion counterstrike you were so worried about. It's not going to happen. Sisko thinks it over. Finally he does smile. SISKO You're right. That is good news. Without warning, Sisko decks Eddington. SISKO (continuing) But I still don't like being lied to. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FIVE 48. 73 CONTINUED: (3) Eddington springs to his feet. He's had enough of Sisko. EDDINGTON I hope you're ready to finish what you started. Eddington lunges for Sisko, but Rebecca steps between them. REBECCA Michael. We don't have time for this. Eddington backs down. EDDINGTON We'll finish this later. Rebecca gets down to business. REBECCA All right, you heard what Michael said. Stick together. Eddington goes to the door and looks outside. Once he's sure the coast is clear, he signals Sisko and the Maquis to follow. 74 EXT. MAQUIS COMMAND CENTER - NIGHT As Sisko and Eddington lead the Maquis out of the Command Center, Rebecca and another Maquis arm themselves with rifles from the fallen Jem'Hadar guards. The group disappears into the fog. 75 EXT. MAQUIS SETTLEMENT - STREET - NIGHT Sisko, Eddington, and the Maquis pick their way through the fog. SISKO You should've told me the truth. If I'd known there were going to be Jem'Hadar here, I would've brought more men. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FIVE 48A. 75 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON The Jem'Hadar weren't supposed to be here. No one knew about this base but us. REBECCA They landed three days ago. We tried to fight... EDDINGTON I know, I saw the bodies. I thought for a while there... REBECCA I didn't think I'd make it either. But they kept all the leaders alive. They were going to make a present of us to the Cardassian government. Now I guess we'll end up in a Federation prison. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FIVE 49. 75 CONTINUED: (2) EDDINGTON We're not going to prison. Not if I have anything to say about it. SISKO Right now, I suggest you concentrate on getting off this planet. We can worry about the rest later. EDDINGTON (simple) There's nothing to worry about. You're not going to put us in jail. Not this time. SISKO You never give up, do you, Mister Eddington? EDDINGTON Never. Just then... 76 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) A phaser shot strikes one of the Maquis in the back, killing him. Sisko and the others look back and see Jem'Hadar emerging from the fog. They fall back and return fire. 77 EXT. MAQUIS SETTLEMENT - BY THE WELL - NIGHT Sisko and the others reach the courtyard with the well. Sisko, Eddington, and Rebecca take up firing positions at the entrance to the courtyard, while the other Maquis head for the well. EDDINGTON Go. Whatever happens, don't stop until you get to the runabout. 78 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) Jem'Hadar approach from down the street, firing as they leapfrog forward. Sisko, Eddington and Rebecca provide covering fire for the retreating Maquis. EDDINGTON You too. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... Eddington and Sisko continue exchanging fire with the Jem'Hadar. SISKO I didn't know you were married. EDDINGTON We held the ceremony two weeks before you captured me. SISKO Not much of a honeymoon. (fires into the darkness) I suggest we both fall back. EDDINGTON For once, you'll get no argument from me. They fall back toward the well. Eddington turns toward the well. But before he can climb down, he gets nailed in the side by a phaser shot. Sisko rushes to help. 78A NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) Eddington fights past the pain and grabs his rifle. A look of grim determination comes over his face. EDDINGTON You'd better get to the Runabout. SISKO What about you? EDDINGTON I'd only slow you down. (firm) Just get Rebecca and the others to safety. SISKO I'm not going to let you just... Eddington points his rifle at Sisko. EDDINGTON (an order) Go. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... EDDINGTON I told you only one of us would be coming back from this mission. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FIVE 51. 78A CONTINUED: (2) Sisko takes one last look at Eddington. The former Maquis commander's focus is on the task at hand. He methodically fires into the darkness. Sisko heads for the well. 79 INT. TUNNEL - NIGHT Sisko joins Rebecca in the tunnel. REBECCA Where's Michael? SISKO He's not coming. REBECCA What do you mean, he's not coming? She starts to go back up the ladder. Sisko restrains her. SISKO Rebecca... we have to go. Now. Rebecca lets herself be led away. 80 EXT. MAQUIS SETTLEMENT - BY THE WELL - NIGHT (OPTICAL) Eddington fires a burst into the darkness. EDDINGTON (calling out to no one) Okay, Crenshaw, Yuen, circle around to the left. Try to hit 'em from behind. Stiles, Dimitris, watch our right flank. Eddington takes a deep breath, and for the first time, we see that he's scared. EDDINGTON (muttering, his doubts showing through) Right. Seems like a perfect time for a song. I wish I could think of one. (shouting) Does anyone know a good song? Something rousing? Eddington pauses, as if waiting for an answer. He looks up and sees five Jem'Hadar coming at him out of the fog. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze... " - REV. 03/21/97 - ACT FIVE 52. 80 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON Too bad. KIRA You must've searched every crawlway in the central core. NOG Just doing my job. KIRA And doing it with style. Nog smiles. NOG Glad to be of help. Suddenly Martok comes off the Turbolift right in front of them. He walks past Nog and nods brusquely. MARTOK Cadet. NOG General. They pass each other. Despite all the pain and trouble it's caused, Sisko's not eager to close the book on the Maquis. SISKO Who knows? There could still be more of them out there, hiding from the Dominion, biding their time. DAX You almost sound hopeful. SISKO There is something attractive about a lost cause. DAX Maybe you and Eddington had more in common than you want to admit. SISKO Maybe. Dax gets up to leave. DAX Good night, Benjamin. Try to get some rest. Sisko nods, but it's clear that he's a long way from the peacefulness of sleep. Dax EXITS. 86 NEW ANGLE On Sisko as he stands and walks over to his window. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Blaze...
