Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - TEASER 1. STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE "For the Uniform" TEASER FADE IN: 1 INT. CAVES - REFUGEE CAMP - NIGHT This is an underground Maquis camp in the DMZ. Conditions are crowded and primitive. Families are huddled together for warmth, children play in the rubble, people distribute food, others tend small cooking fires, while still others lie sick or wounded on the cold cave floors. We should get the feeling that this camp has been set up for some time. 2 ON THE CAVE ENTRANCE where a silhouetted figure pauses in the entryway and looks around. A few refugees glance up at him for a moment and then continue about their business. The figure steps out of the backlight, revealing his features for the first time. It's CAPTAIN SISKO, wearing the tattered clothes of another "refugee." He glances around the cave, as he walks through the chamber, taking in the pathetic sights and sounds of these humans and their living conditions. Sisko is looking for someone, scanning the faces, then spotting something off screen, he moves towards an OLD MAN working a twenty-fourth century equivalent of an arc welder, welding a section of a broken-down replicator. The light from the welder FLASHES on his face, revealing a distinctive scar running the length of his cheek. Sisko approaches him. SISKO I'm looking for a friend of mine. The Old Man keeps working without even glancing up at Sisko. SISKO His name is Cing'ta. On the mention of that name, the Old Man finally looks up at Sisko, seeming to size him up. Sisko returns the look. After a beat, the Old Man points to a curtain, drawn to cover the entrance to another chamber. The Old Man returns his attention to his work. Sisko crosses the room. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - TEASER 2. 2 CONTINUED: Then, making sure that no one has followed him or even taken notice of him, Sisko steps through the curtain. 3 INT. CAVES - INNER CHAMBER Sisko steps into the dark room, looks around. No one seems to be there. SISKO Cing'ta? Sisko senses that something's not quite right. He takes a few steps into the room and then, slowly, trying not to draw attention to what he's doing, slips a hand into his coat pocket. But before he can pull out his phaser, the wrong end of a disruptor is pressed against his head. Sisko freezes. And then a familiar voice: MAN'S VOICE Throw it on the ground. Sisko does as he's told. The disruptor is eased away from his head, but its aim is never altered. MAN'S VOICE Turn around. Sisko turns to come face-to-face with MICHAEL EDDINGTON, the erstwhile lieutenant commander and Starfleet security chief on Deep Space Nine. EDDINGTON Hello, captain. Sisko stiffens at the sight of his former officer. SISKO Eddington. EDDINGTON Mister Cing'ta won't be joining us. SISKO Is he dead? EDDINGTON You just don't understand the Maquis, do you Captain? (MORE) DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - TEASER 3. 3 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON (Cont'd) We're not killers. Mister Cing'ta has been marooned on a particularly nasty planet in the Badlands, but I assure you -- he's very much alive. SISKO How merciful. You condemned him to a slow death. EDDINGTON It's more than he deserved. He was going to sell us out to you. He betrayed us. SISKO There's a subject you know a lot about. EDDINGTON You've been on my tail for eight months and now that we're face-to- face -- that's all you have to say to me? SISKO I'll say the rest at your court- martial. EDDINGTON Tell me, captain... what is it that bothers you more -- the fact that I left Starfleet to fight for a higher cause, or that it happened on your watch? SISKO You didn't "leave" Starfleet. If you had, I wouldn't be here. You "betrayed" Starfleet... you used your position as security chief to feed the Maquis information about us. And at the same time, you misled us with false information about them. There's a word for that... treason. Eddington's eyes harden... there's a lot of tension between these two men. Eddington indicates the curtain with his disruptor. Sisko stares at him for a moment -- long enough to make the point that he's not at all intimidated by Eddington. Then slowly, and deliberately, walks over to the curtain. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - TEASER 3A. 3 CONTINUED: (2) EDDINGTON Look out there. Sisko pulls the curtain. 4 SISKO'S POV of the first chamber, where he sees the refugees going about their sad existence. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - TEASER 4. 5 INTERCUT WITH. EDDINGTON Those people... they used to be colonists on Salva Two. They had farms and shops and homes and schools... and then one day, the Federation signed a treaty and handed their world over to the Cardassians. (snapping his fingers) Just like that... they made these people refugees overnight. SISKO It's not that simple and you know it. These people don't have to live here like this. We've offered to resettle them. EDDINGTON They don't want to be resettled -- they want to go home to the lives they built. How would you feel if the Federation gave your father's home to the Cardassians? Think he'd like to be "resettled?" SISKO (turning to face Eddington) I'm not here to debate Federation policy with -- EDDINGTON (snapping) I didn't tell you to turn around. Sisko swallows his anger for a moment and turns back to look at the refugee camp. EDDINGTON Look at them, captain. They're humans. Just like you and me. And Starfleet took everything away from them. Remember that the next time you put on that uniform. There's a war out here and you're on the wrong side. Sisko takes that in for a beat. SISKO You know what I see out there, Mister Eddington? I see victims... DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - TEASER 5. 5 CONTINUED: SISKO (Cont'd) ... but not of Cardassia or the Federation. Victims of you. The Maquis. You've sold these people the dream that one day, they can go back to those farms and homes and schools -- but you know they never can. Sisko turns around, faces him directly. SISKO (continuing) And the longer you keep that hope alive, the longer they're going to suffer. Eddington glares at him, raising the gun directly to his face. SISKO Go ahead, shoot me. But Eddington has no such plans. He relaxes his aim. EDDINGTON Someday, I may take you up on that. For now, let me leave you with one piece of advice... don't come after me... you'll regret it. Eddington smiles for the first time; then pulls out a small control device, taps a key and DEMATERIALIZES. The second he's gone, Sisko reaches inside his coat, taps his combadge. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - TEASER 6. 5 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO Sisko to Defiant. Eddington just beamed out. Trace his transporter signal. KIRA'S COM VOICE We've got it, Captain. He's on a Maquis Raider. They're breaking orbit and heading out of the system. SISKO Beam me aboard and lay in a pursuit course. All hands to battle stations. Sisko DEMATERIALIZES. 6 EXT. Sisko stands by his chair, still out of uniform. KIRA He's headed for the Badlands, all right. Course is zero mark two- one-three. SISKO (to Dax) Lieutenant. DAX Changing course now to zero mark two-one-three. We're on his tail, captain. SISKO Maximum warp. (to Worf) How long until we're in firing range? WORF Twenty-two minutes. SISKO Major? KIRA Not good enough. He'll reach the plasma fields two minutes before we're in range. SISKO We need help. (to Worf) What's the position of the Starship Malinche? DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT ONE 8. 8 CONTINUED: WORF They're on patrol in the DMZ, near the Gamma Seven outpost. SISKO (smiles) Perfect. (to Kira) Is the new holo-communicator ready? KIRA The chief has had it on-line for six hours. I think he's eager to have someone give it a try. SISKO Always like to please the chief. Open a channel to Captain Sanders on the Malinche. Kira taps a few keys as Sisko turns to face the back of the ship. After a beat, the hologram of CAPTAIN SANDERS APPEARS on a small PADD that has been installed in the aft section of the Bridge. Sanders is a human male in his forties, a thoughtful and deliberate man, he's not prone to snap decisions. SANDERS Are you receiving my image, captain? SISKO Yes. And you? SANDERS (nodding) You appear to be sitting on my bridge. It may take me a while to get used to this. (dry) I'm not fond of uninvited guests. SISKO I'll try not to overstay my welcome... but at the moment I need your help. We're in pursuit of a Maquis raider headed for the Badlands. Can you intercept? Sanders works an invisible console. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT ONE 9. 8 CONTINUED: (2) SANDERS On our way. (a beat) You seem pretty eager, Captain. What did this Maquis raider do? SISKO It's not what they did, it's who's in command. Michael Eddington. Sanders's head snaps up at the name. SANDERS Everyone's favorite traitor. SISKO Captain, if you don't mind... SANDERS (understands) You want him in your brig. We'll cut him off -- you can grab him. Sanders out. The hologram DISAPPEARS. KIRA The Malinche is moving to intercept. SISKO (to Worf) Prepare to target the Maquis ship. I want to disable them -- but I want them alive. WORF Understood. SISKO (to Kira) Send a security detachment to the Transporter Room. Have them prepared to receive -- DAX Captain -- Eddington's dropping out of warp. SISKO Go to impulse. Raise shields. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT ONE 10. 8 CONTINUED: (3) KIRA (re: Eddington) What's he doing? DAX He's changing course... he's now heading directly for us. WORF He's locked his weapons on us. KIRA He's no match for the Defiant. Is this some kind of suicide run? SISKO (shaking his head) Not Eddington. He's up to something... (making a decision) Let's not give him a chance to make his move. Mister Worf -- fire phasers. Worf hits a control on his console -- and the second he does, all hell breaks loose: flashing LIGHTS, ALARMS, consoles blinking then going to static. Every system on the ship is crashing. SISKO Report. KIRA We've got a massive computer failure. Every computer system is down -- and all the backups. Kira is shocked by what she sees. KIRA We're losing control over... everything. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT ONE 8 CONTINUED: (4) DAX Main power's off-line... weapons... navigation... helm... propulsion... SISKO Bridge to Engine Room. No response. SISKO (to Worf) Commander -- get down there. Find out what's going on. Worf rushes out as Sisko turns to Kira. SISKO Try to route the auxiliary controls through the -- Suddenly the holographic communicator comes to life and Eddington APPEARS on the Bridge. EDDINGTON Before you waste a lot of time running around trying to restore computer control... let me save you some trouble. You can't. You'll find that your memory cores are completely wiped and will have to be reprogrammed... from scratch. (re: the holo- communicator) These work remarkably well. Glad we were able to "procure" one... SISKO (sticking to what matters) You left a cascade virus in the Defiant's computers. EDDINGTON Sounds simple, doesn't it? But I assure you it took a great deal of time to devise one that wouldn't be detected by Odo or Chief O'Brien. I'm really quite proud of it. SISKO I'll add it to the list of charges against you. EDDINGTON Well, as long as you're making a list... why don't you add this. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... SPACE (OPTICAL) The Maquis Raider makes a strafing run at the defenseless Defiant, blasting it with its phasers. 12 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE (OPTICAL) Suddenly, the Defiant ROCKS under the attack. A few consoles EXPLODE with a shower of SPARKS. Everyone, except Eddington, is rocked as the ship is pounded -- again and again. EDDINGTON You know what your problem is, captain -- you've made this personal. It didn't have to be. It wasn't with me. Another EXPLOSION. EDDINGTON I have no animosity... no harsh feelings toward you. SISKO I wish I could say the same. EDDINGTON Does it really pay to risk yourself... your ship... your crew on a personal vendetta? And would Starfleet approve? Another EXPLOSION. SISKO I don't need any lectures about Starfleet from you. And no matter what happens here today... Yet another EXPLOSION. SISKO (continuing) This isn't over between us. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT ONE 13. 12 CONTINUED: (2) EDDINGTON Captain -- I'm the one in control here. Your ship is defenseless... I could destroy you right now. (a beat) But I won't. Like I said, the Maquis aren't killers. Our quarrel is with the Cardassians, not you... Leave us alone and we'll leave you alone. Another EXPLOSION. EDDINGTON (to someone O.S.) Cease fire. And indeed, the pounding stops. SISKO Am I supposed to thank you? EDDINGTON No, and I'm not going to make you grovel for your life. (a beat) You see, captain, unlike you, I know when to walk away. (a beat) Maybe you should think about that... on your long trip home. Without waiting for a response, Eddington DISAPPEARS. 13 CLOSE ON SISKO as he contemplates his position. His face full of anger and humiliation. We HOLD on the complete silence on the Defiant Bridge, until we: FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 14. ACT TWO FADE IN: 14 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) (STOCK) To establish the Defiant docked at its mooring. SISKO (V.O.) Captain's Log: Stardate 50488.2 The Defiant has returned to the station... but not under its own power. The Starship Malinche had to tow us home. 15 INT. CAPTAIN'S OFFICE Sisko is getting a report from ODO, O'BRIEN and Worf. O'BRIEN We've got our work cut out for us. Eddington's cascade virus disabled every memory circuit on the Defiant. We have to reload and reprogram the entire database. SISKO How long? There's an urgency to Sisko throughout this scene; he's itching to get back out after Eddington. O'BRIEN If we were at a shipyard with a spacedock and a full crew of -- SISKO (cutting him off) We're not. How long? O'BRIEN Two weeks. And that's using three shifts working round the clock. It's a struggle not to snap at O'Brien, but Sisko knows this is not O'Brien's fault -- he's just delivering the bad news. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 15. 15 CONTINUED: SISKO Get started. (can't help but adding) If there's any way you can speed things along... O'Brien nods. O'BRIEN I'll do what I can. O'Brien EXITS as Sisko turns his attention to Odo. ODO I've removed two similar cascade viruses hidden on the station's main computer. By transmitting a signal, Eddington could've disabled our entire defense system. SISKO How long until you've eliminated all of Eddington's handiwork? ODO A good question. I can't guarantee we've found all of them. (off Sisko's look) Eddington was DS9's chief of Starfleet security for eighteen months. He had the opportunity to infiltrate and compromise every system on the station. SISKO Then check every system on the station. ODO I intend to. Odo heads for the door, but pauses as another thought hits him. ODO Have you ever reminded Starfleet command that they stationed Eddington here because they didn't trust me? SISKO No. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 16. 15 CONTINUED: (2) ODO Please do. Then he EXITS. SISKO What's the word from Starfleet Intelligence? WORF Two Bolian freighters have disappeared near the Badlands, and they believe the Maquis are responsible. SISKO What were the freighters carrying? WORF Several thousand tons of selenium and rhodium nitrite. SISKO (puzzled) Not very valuable cargo. What would they want with it? WORF Commander Dax is analyzing the possibilities. Captain Sanders approaches Sisko's door from Ops. Sisko sees him and waves him inside while he finishes up with Worf. SISKO Good. In the meantime, help the chief bring the Defiant back on- line. I want to get out there as soon as possible. WORF Aye, sir. Worf EXITS. Sisko now turns his attention to Sanders, who's been waiting patiently for Worf to leave before delivering some awkward news. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 17. 15 CONTINUED: (3) SISKO What can I do for you, Captain? SANDERS (taking a breath) I don't know quite how to tell you this... so I'll just say it. Starfleet Command has given me a new assignment. They want me to bring in Eddington. Sisko can't quite believe what he's hearing. SISKO You mean you've been ordered to help me bring him in, don't you? SANDERS No. Your mission orders have been changed. Eddington is no longer your responsibility. This is not easy for Sisko to hear. He takes a moment before asking: SISKO Did they give you a reason? SANDERS You've been after him for eight months... not to put too fine a point on it, but you haven't gotten the job done. Sisko turns to look out the window, trying to contain a swirl of emotions. Sanders is not insensitive to what he's feeling, and tries to help with: SANDERS Look, captain, I understand how you feel. If one of my officers had fooled me the way Eddington fooled you, I'd take it personally, too. That comment stings a bit. Sisko shoots him a quick look. SANDERS Bad choice of words, I didn't mean "fooled"... SISKO No -- you're exactly right. He did fool me. But it won't happen again. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 18. 15 CONTINUED: (4) SANDERS That's not the issue. Starfleet also believes that, where Eddington is concerned, you're vulnerable. He knows you too well, captain. So maybe it's time for someone he doesn't know to go after him. Sisko takes a deep breath to control his emotions; he knows that Captain Sanders isn't to blame for Starfleet's new orders. After a long beat, Sisko steps up to Sanders, stretching out his hand. SISKO Good hunting. Sanders smiles admiringly; Sisko is a class act. SANDERS Thank you, captain. Sanders then EXITS. We stay with Sisko as he sits down at his desk. His tightened jaw tells us just how difficult it is for him to accept what has happened. 16 INT. DEFIANT - ENGINE ROOM O'Brien and a full engineering CREW are working on the Defiant, trying to bring her back on-line. Consoles are open, optical cable and portable equipment are strewn everywhere. The room is a mess. QUARK ENTERS with two waiters carrying a large ice chest-like container. QUARK Lunchtime! For once, everyone's glad to see Quark. The repair crew put down their tools and line up to get sandwiches and drinks out of the container. QUARK Okay, who's doing the honors? O'BRIEN I'll take it. QUARK Just put your thumb print right there. But before he does, O'Brien looks over the bill carefully. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 19. 16 CONTINUED: QUARK What? You don't trust me? O'BRIEN Starfleet accounting has been all over me for these bills of yours. Apparently, two weeks ago I ordered six cases of champagne for the night shift. QUARK Can I help it that you care about your crew? O'Brien sees something on the bill that isn't right. O'BRIEN Quark -- But before O'Brien can say anything else, Quark takes back the PADD. QUARK All right -- if you're going to get picky... Quark starts reworking the PADD. BASHIR ENTERS, joining the food line behind O'Brien. O'BRIEN How's it going, Julian? BASHIR (sarcastic) Wonderful. I've reloaded two percent of the medical database into the computer... at this rate, working round the clock, I should be done, oh, a year from Thursday. O'BRIEN I still can't believe how much damage Eddington managed to do. BASHIR I never trusted him, you know. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 20. 16 CONTINUED: (2) O'BRIEN Oh, come off it -- BASHIR No, I'm serious. Right from the beginning, there was something... slightly "off" about him. O'BRIEN What are you talking about? You were always inviting him to play darts with us. BASHIR I was just trying to be polite. I never really liked him. Besides, you're the one that had him over for dinner to your home -- with your wife and child. They get their food and pick a spot to sit and eat. O'BRIEN (defensive) It was a dinner party -- there were twelve other people there. I didn't like Eddington -- I invited him because I thought he was your friend. BASHIR That's ridiculous. He was never my friend. Okay, he played a great game of darts... and he knew how to tell a good story. O'BRIEN (smiling) Remember the one about the four- legged Talorian... ? BASHIR And the Orion slave girl? They both grin at the memory as they open their sandwich containers. But before they eat, there's a long quiet moment. BASHIR You know what, Miles? I guess I did like him... O'BRIEN Me, too. And on that sad note, they take bites from their food. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 21. 17 INT. HOLOSUITE CLOSE ON A GLOVED FIST SLAMMING into a punching bag. ADJUST TO REVEAL Sisko, drenched in sweat, working out his frustration by furiously pummeling the bag being held in place by Dax. DAX The good news is Starfleet Intelligence made some progress breaking the Maquis communication codes. Sisko just keeps punching the bag relentlessly. SISKO The bad news is it won't do us any good. We're out of the game. (what can you do?) But what the hell, right? You win some, you lose some. But Dax isn't fooled by Sisko's "it's okay" attitude; she knows this is bothering him deeply. DAX You always had problems with the "lose some" part of that. SISKO (letting the hurt show through) What can I say, old man? In twenty-five years of duty, I've never been taken off an assignment... until now. Sisko releases another flurry of punches. DAX (not believing him) Right. This is just about being taken off an assignment. Slam. DAX It has nothing to do with a certain ex-security officer we both know... Sisko pounds the bag even harder. SISKO He worked under me for a year and a half... DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 22. 17 CONTINUED: SISKO (Cont'd) I saw him almost every day... read his reports... had him over for dinner... even took him to a baseball game in a holosuite once... Sisko slams the bag between phrases... again and again. SISKO And I never saw it... it's my job to be a good judge of character... and what did I do? I not only didn't see it -- I put him up for a promotion... DAX He played his hand well. Sisko slams the bag harder and harder... SISKO He played me all right... and what's my excuse? Is he a changeling? No. Is he a being with seven lifetimes of experience? No. Is he a wormhole alien? No. He's just a man. Like me. (slamming the bag with all his strength) And he beat me. With this last hit, Sisko rocks Dax back off the bag and it swings in the air back and forth. Sisko stands there, breathing heavily, his fists at his sides. DAX That's good. Sisko stops, confronting Dax. SISKO Good? DAX It's good you're working it out on the bag. Because, Benjamin... this one you're going to have to let go. Eddington is someone else's problem now... and you're going to have to live with that. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 23. 17 CONTINUED: (2) Sisko looks hard at Dax, not liking what she has to say -- especially because he fears it may be true. Kira's COM VOICE interrupts the moment: KIRA'S COM VOICE Ops to Captain Sisko. SISKO What is it, Major? KIRA'S COM VOICE Sir -- you'd better get up here. There's news... and it's about Eddington. Sisko and Dax exchange a look. 18 INT. OPS Kira and Worf are at their stations. Sisko and Dax ENTER, a towel still draped around Sisko's neck. SISKO Report. KIRA Eddington just upped the ante -- he attacked the Cardassian colony on Veloz Prime with a biogenic weapon. SISKO (shocked) What? WORF He launched three stratospheric torpedoes at the planet and spread cobalt diselenide throughout the biosphere. DAX A nerve agent that is harmless to most humanoids... but deadly to Cardassians. WORF The Cardassians are already evacuating. And Eddington has announced that the Maquis intend to "reclaim" the planet once they're gone. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 24. 18 CONTINUED: KIRA What I don't understand is where the Maquis got the materials to make a biogenic weapon. DAX I do. I should've seen it earlier... the selenium and rhodium nitrite they hijacked can be reformulated and, with some work, synthesized to produce cobalt diselenide. SISKO Where's the Malinche? KIRA On the other side of the Badlands. They're headed for Veloz Prime now, but by the time they get there... SISKO ... Eddington will be long gone. Sisko takes a few steps away, weighing a decision. KIRA (to Dax) Given the amount of chemical compounds Eddington stole... how many of these weapons will he be able to make? SISKO (grim) Enough to poison every Cardassian colony in the DMZ. DAX There must be something we can do. Worf, are there any other Starships near Veloz Prime? WORF (shaking his head) The Malinche is our only ship in the sector. KIRA So unless they can stop Eddington ... it looks like the Maquis have turned the tide. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT TWO 25. 18 CONTINUED: (2) Sisko turns around, a determined look on his face. SISKO There is another ship in the area... (off their looks) It's moored at Docking Bay Three... Without another word, he heads for the turbolift. The others exchange a look... they know exactly what he's decided, and they're with him. Kira, Worf and Dax join Sisko on the waiting turbolift. When everyone's aboard: SISKO (to Com) Defiant. And as Sisko and his officers sink out of view, we: FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT THREE 26. ACT THREE FADE IN: 19 INT. DEFIANT - ENGINE ROOM Sisko and Dax stand near O'Brien, watching him and his CREW working feverishly on every system on the ship. O'BRIEN It's going to be tricky, Captain. only half the systems are back on- line -- and most of those aren't operating at full capacity. SISKO What about the warp drive? O'BRIEN (nodding) We can go to warp six -- but the inertial dampers haven't been fully repaired, so don't expect a smooth ride. O'Brien moves over to another open panel where a couple of crewmen work on another system. Dax joins them. DAX Weapons are also on-line but the targeting scanners need to be manually calibrated. We can shoot, but God knows what we'll hit. O'Brien nods and makes a couple corrections to what his crew is doing before moving on to the next open panel where two more crewmen work. SISKO What about communications? O'BRIEN The Defiant's comm system is fried. And I do mean fried. DAX Well, we still have our combadges... O'BRIEN I'm afraid not. They won't work either -- not with all the interference from the unshielded EPS conduits. DAX So what do we use? Cups on a long string? DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Sisko turns to see NOG come over and stand stiffly at attention. NOG Cadet Nog, reporting as ordered, sir. SISKO Stand easy. Nog stands at ease. O'BRIEN (to Sisko) With most of the bridge control functions off-line... all orders to Engineering have to be relayed. For the sake of clarity -- I thought it best that one voice relayed all those messages... (indicating Nog) Mister Academy here. Sisko nods. The chief is right, this is going to be very tricky. O'BRIEN I thought you'd want someone who could hear you while the bridge is exploding all around us. NOG (suddenly concerned) Exploding? SISKO (to Nog) We may be going into a combat situation -- think you're ready for that, cadet? NOG Sir, yes, sir. Absolutely, sir. Sisko nods reassuringly. SISKO Glad to hear it. Report to the bridge. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT THREE 28. 19 CONTINUED: (2) NOG Aye, sir. Nog turns and heads out of the Engine Room; as he does, he mutters to himself: NOG Exploding... ? Sisko, Dax and O'Brien continue their "tour." O'BRIEN Just to give you all the bad news at once... we also have no cloak, no transporters, no replicators and the stabilizing gyros are at only fifty percent -- so don't ask for any sharp turns, not unless you want to end up doing barrel rolls. DAX (dry) That could be fun. SISKO Any good news, Chief? O'Brien thinks about it for a beat. O'BRIEN The new holo-communicator I installed... it works perfectly. SISKO Let's be grateful for small favors. (off O'Brien's look) Prepare for departure. Sisko moves off, leading Dax up the ladder. 20 INT. DEFIANT - CORRIDOR Sisko and Dax emerge from around the corner, headed for the bridge. Sisko in the lead. They take a few steps, Sisko stops, turns, and confronts her. SISKO All right, say it. DAX What? DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT THREE 29. 20 CONTINUED: SISKO That I've lost all perspective... that I'm turning this into a vendetta between me and Eddington, and that I'm putting the ship, the crew and my entire career at risk. And that if I had any brains at all I'd go back to my office, sit down and start reading Odo's crime reports. DAX I wasn't going to say that. SISKO But you were thinking it, weren't you? DAX No... actually, what I was thinking is that you're becoming more like Curzon all the time. That catches Sisko off guard; he smiles, almost laughs. SISKO I don't know quite how to take that. DAX Consider it a compliment. (a beat) And the next time I go off, half- cocked, on some wild-eyed adventure... think back to this moment and be a little more understanding. Dax smiles at him and continues down the corridor. Sisko smiles to himself, shaking his head, then follows her toward the bridge. 21 EXT. Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT THREE 35. 34 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE The ship rocks occasionally as we move through the unpredictable plasma fields. Sisko watches the plasma fields on the viewscreen and paces around the room. A calm stream of orders flow from Dax, Worf and Kira to their respective crewmen. Sisko's jaw tightens. SISKO Put him through. 35 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) as Eddington's image APPEARS on the Bridge, behind Sisko's chair. EDDINGTON You just couldn't resist the temptation to come after me, could you? SISKO I like to finish what I start. EDDINGTON Well, I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed... again. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT THREE 35 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON (Cont'd) You won't get me, captain. But I do have a consolation prize for you... actually it's more of a gift. SISKO (dry) Thank you, but I've read it. EDDINGTON Recently? If not, you should read it again. Pay close attention to the character of Inspector Javert -- the French policeman who spends twenty years chasing a man for stealing a loaf of bread. Sound like anyone you know? SISKO Why don't you beam over and we'll discuss it. 36 ANGLE ON KIRA KIRA Closing on the Maquis ship, captain. Seven hundred kilometers... SISKO (to Worf) Ready weapons. WORF Phaser banks charged. SISKO Lock target. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT THREE 38. 36 CONTINUED: WORF Locked. Through this whole exchange, Eddington doesn't seem particularly worried. SISKO It's over, Eddington. Surrender your vessel and prepare to be boarded. EDDINGTON It's a tempting offer, but I have other plans... enjoy the book. It's an unmanned probe... set to transmit a false warp signature. SISKO He wanted to lure us here -- why? KIRA (speaking for both of them) He's up to something outside the plasma fields. Sisko is furious at being had by Eddington once again. SISKO Helm, bring us about. Get us out of here. Engines at full impulse. DAX NOG (to her crewmen) Engine Room, bridge. Hard to port. NOG (to Sisko) Sir -- Chief O'Brien doesn't recommend increasing our velocity through the plasma fields. SISKO (overruling the recommendation) Objection noted. Now get me more speed. NOG Engine Room, bridge. More speed. 40 ANGLE ON THE VIEWSCREEN to see the plasma fields clear as the ship goes out into open space. 41 RESUME But the sigh of relief is short-lived. KIRA (off console) Sir -- picking up a distress call. It's the starship Malinche. They've been ambushed by the Maquis. DEFIANT - BRIDGE (OPTICAL) Sisko gets up from his chair as the image of a very angry and embarrassed Captain Sanders MATERIALIZES on the holo-communicator. Sanders wears the scars of his recent battle: his uniform has been blackened with several burn marks. SISKO How can we help you, captain? SANDERS Our warp core matrix compositor is fused and our navigational systems are disabled. If you could spare some micro-power relays, we should have the engines back on-line in a day or two. SISKO (to Nog) Engine Room, beam a damage control team to the Malinche. Tell them to take along a dozen micro-power relays. Nog repeats the order to the Engine Room in the b.g. as Sanders continues his conversation with Sisko. SANDERS NOG He got me -- we'd Engine Room, bridge. just entered the Transport a damage Badlands when we got control team to the a distress signal Malinche with twelve from a Cardassian micro-power relays. freighter. The Malinche's Captain continues: SANDERS They'd been attacked by the Maquis and had suffered casualties... our sensors confirmed what we were being told, but when we lowered our shields to transport the wounded... DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FOUR 42. 44 CONTINUED: Sisko can see the scenario perfectly -- and he knows that what happened to Sanders could just as easily have happened to him. SISKO The sensor readings had been faked. SANDERS (nodding) There were no Cardassians on that freighter. The Maquis had rigged it with a focused particle beam that punched through our gyro shielding and we lost helm control. And before we got back on our feet, three Maquis raiders came out from the plasma field... Captain Sanders has built a healthy anger for Eddington, tempered only by his embarrassment at having been bested by him. SANDERS (with meaning) It seems I couldn't get the job done either... Sisko understands how Captain Sanders feels perfectly. SISKO It's not over. SANDERS I figured you'd be going after him. We have something that might be useful to you. We intercepted a coded message from one of Eddington's raiders. Maybe you can decode it -- our computer's still down. SISKO I appreciate it. SANDERS Do me a favor? SISKO Of course. This is the call he's been very anxious to get. Odo MATERIALIZES near Sisko's chair. ODO Captain. SISKO We could use some good news around here, Odo. Tell me that you have some. ODO Possibly... I've analyzed the Maquis message. SISKO And? DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FOUR 45. 47 CONTINUED: Throughout this, Dax, Worf and Kira continue to give their steady stream of orders to their crewmen. ODO It appears to be a simple, Breen nursery rhyme. A heterophonic, five-line verse. Quite a catchy one, too. Odo HUMS a few bars for Sisko. SISKO What's it mean? ODO Metrical analysis shows an alternating tetrameter and pentameter structure... but the computer could find no meaningful pattern in the words. They appear to be just what they are -- nonsensical phrases strung together because they rhyme... at least to the Breen. SISKO And the music? ODO It's written on a Lyxian scale... I ran it through the computer, too. (shaking his head) No meaningful pattern. Sisko seems crestfallen. SISKO So we're nowhere? ODO I wouldn't say that. You see, I remembered something Eddington once said to me... "The best place to hide something is in plain sight." So, considering it's a Breen nursery rhyme... SISKO (catching on) ... you think Eddington is using it as a signal for a rendezvous in the Breen system? DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FOUR 46. 47 CONTINUED: (2) ODO Or a Breen settlement -- like the one on Portas Five, which isn't far from the DMZ. The biogenic components of the weapons Eddington's been using are very bulky and very unstable. They need to be kept in a large, sophisticated cold storage unit. SISKO And if anyone knows how to keep things cold, it's the Breen. Thank you, Odo. ODO Captain. Odo DEMATERIALIZES. Sisko turns to Worf. SISKO Mister Worf -- don't we have a series of sensor relays near Portas Five? WORF Yes, sir. Two class-five intelligence drones. SISKO Pull their sensor logs. I want to see who's been visiting the Breen Settlement. 48 EXT. SPACE - THE DEFIANT (OPTICAL) (STOCK) streaking past at warp speed. SISKO (V.O.) Captain's Log: Supplemental. The freighter was last seen headed into the Dorvan sector of the DMZ. DAX Considering the freighter's range, velocity, and heading... (pointing) ... Eddington's next target is one of four Cardassian colonies. WORF And of those, these two are unlikely targets. Their defenses were recently upgraded by the Cardassians. SISKO (agrees) Eddington isn't looking for a fight. That leaves only these two... Quatal and Panora. WORF Quatal's got a lucrative mining operation and their weapon systems are in the process of being upgraded, but are not yet fully operational. SISKO A tempting target. DAX But not as tempting as Panora. The Maquis raided them two months ago -- and most of their defense systems were seriously damaged. They're almost helpless. KIRA And there are constant ion storms in that system -- good places to hide, if you want to mount a surprise attack. WORF A tactic Eddington knows well. (summing it up) Panora is a more logical target than Quatal. Sisko agrees with part of his staff's assessment. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... A beat as they work, then Kira is taken aback by something on her console. KIRA We're too late, Captain. Eddington's detonated his weapon. The nerve agent is already spreading through the planet's atmosphere. Sisko's jaw hardens at the news. DAX Which means the Cardassians don't have much time to get away. But if you come after me -- you'll have to pay a price... you'll have to let all those helpless Cardassians spiral down to their deaths. (a beat) The choice is yours. Sisko swivels to Kira. SISKO How long do they have? KIRA Two minutes to impact. EDDINGTON Not much time. Probably take you at least a minute to get back to the planet... (oh, well) They're just Cardassians. DAX (shaking her head) I can't stand Victor Hugo. I tried to read The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but I couldn't get through it... it's so melodramatic and his heroines are so two- dimensional. Sisko looks back at the PADD. SISKO Eddington compared me to one of the characters... Inspector Javert. A policeman who relentlessly pursues a man named Valjean who's guilty of a trivial offense... and in the end, Javert's own inflexibility destroys him... he commits suicide. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FIVE 55. 64 CONTINUED: DAX (doesn't buy the comparison) You can't believe that description fits you. Eddington is just trying to get under your skin. SISKO He did that eight months ago. (a beat) What strikes me about this book is that Eddington said it was one of his favorites. DAX No accounting for taste. SISKO Think about it... A Starfleet security officer is fascinated by a nineteenth-century, French melodrama. And now he's a leader of the Maquis... a resistance group fighting the "noble" battle against the "evil" Cardassians. DAX Sounds like he's living out his own fantasy. SISKO Exactly. And you know what? Les Miserables isn't about the policeman... it's about Valjean. The victim of a monstrous injustice who spends his entire life helping people... making noble sacrifices for others... that's how Eddington sees himself. He's Valjean... he's Robin Hood... he's a romantic, dashing figure, fighting the good fight, against insurmountable odds. DAX The secret life of Michael Eddington... How does it help us? SISKO Eddington's the hero of his own story... that makes me the villain. And what is it that every hero wants to do? DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FIVE 56. 64 CONTINUED: (2) DAX Kill the bad guy. Sisko gets up and walks around, figuring this all out. SISKO That's part of it... but heroes only kill when they have to. Eddington could've killed me back in the refugee camp or when he disabled the Defiant. (a beat) But in the best melodramas... the villain creates a situation that forces the hero to sacrifice himself for his people or his cause... one final grand gesture... DAX What are you getting at, Benjamin? SISKO (determined) I think it's time for me to become the villain. Off Sisko's face -- he's got a plan. 65 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE Sisko takes only a few steps in the room before calling out: SISKO (to Worf) Commander, prepare two quantum torpedoes. Have engineering attach a cargo pod with two hundred kilograms of trilithium resin to each torpedo. This unusual order surprises Worf. WORF Yes, sir... but... SISKO But what? Less than an hour away. SISKO Helm, set a course for Solosos Three. (back to Kira) I want you to send the following message on all Maquis frequencies. Sisko pauses for a moment to collect his thoughts. SISKO To all members of the Maquis resistance. This is Captain Sisko of the USS Defiant. In response to the Maquis's use of biogenic weapons in their recent attacks, I am about to take the following action: in exactly one hour, I will detonate two quantum torpedoes that will scatter trilithium resin in the atmosphere of Solosos Three. Kira, Dax and Worf exchange a surprised look; even if this is just a bluff, it's a hell of a threat to make. SISKO I will thereby, make the planet uninhabitable to human life... for the next fifty years. (a beat) I suggest evacuation plans begin immediately. Sisko sits in his chair, contemplating the move he's just made. Everyone on the Bridge stares at him for a shocked moment. SISKO What are you waiting for people? Carry out your orders. (off her console) And still no transport ship activity or any other sign that they're getting ready to evacuate. This is disappointing to Sisko, but not unexpected. SISKO Mister Worf... prepare to fire torpedoes on my mark. WORF (to his crew) Detach safeties on torpedoes one and two. KIRA (brightening) Incoming message. It's Eddington. Sisko takes a deep breath, preparing for the encounter. Sisko is determined to play his role as the "bad guy" to the hilt. He's harsher, more unyielding than we've ever seen him. Eddington APPEARS on the Bridge. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FIVE 59. 67 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON What are you really up to, Javert? Eddington reacts, beginning to believe Sisko might be serious. A little worry creeps into his voice. EDDINGTON You're bluffing. SISKO Am I? (staring at Eddington) Commander Worf. Launch torpedoes. This is the order no one was expecting, least of all Eddington. Everyone was hoping that it wouldn't come to this. Dax, Kira and every N.D. on the Bridge turns and looks at Worf, who finds himself hesitating to carry out an order for the first time in his life. SISKO Commander -- I said launch torpedoes. WORF Aye, sir. Worf taps his console -- 68 EXT. SPACE - THE DEFIANT (OPTICAL) launches two torpedoes at the planet's atmosphere. We see the FLASHES as they detonate; a moment later, the clouds start CHANGING COLORS as the trilithium resin is released. 69 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE (OPTICAL) As before. Kira checks something on her console. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FIVE 59A. 69 CONTINUED: KIRA The trilithium resin is dissipating throughout the biosphere. (off something else) The Maquis are scrambling their transport ships. They're starting to evacuate. Eddington erupts with anger and shock. EDDINGTON Do you realize what you've done? DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FIVE 60. 69 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO I've only just begun. I'm going to eliminate every Maquis colony in the DMZ. EDDINGTON You're talking about turning hundreds of thousands of people into homeless refugees. SISKO That's right. Your attack on the Malinche proved one thing -- the Maquis have become an intolerable threat to the security of the Federation. I intend to eliminate that threat. EDDINGTON But think about those people you saw in the caves -- huddled and starving -- they didn't attack the Malinche. SISKO You should've thought about that before you attacked a Federation starship. Sisko sits in his chair and swivels away from Eddington, turning his back on him. SISKO Helm, lay in a course for Tracken Two. Warp six. (to Worf) Mister Worf, prepare two more torpedoes. Eddington stands behind Sisko, flabbergasted. DAX NOG (overlapping) (overlapping) Set course zero-five- Engine Room, bridge. zero mark one-seven- Warp six. nine WORF (overlapping Unlatch safeties on torpedoes three and four... DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FIVE 61. 69 CONTINUED: (3) Eddington is desperate. The situation is getting out of his control. EDDINGTON Can't you see what's happening to you? You're going against everything you claim to believe in -- and for what? To satisfy a personal vendetta. Sisko swivels around -- playing out his hand: SISKO (angry; defensive) You betrayed your uniform. EDDINGTON (firing back) And you're betraying yours -- right now! The sad part is you don't even realize it... (a beat) I feel sorry for you, captain. This obsession with me -- look what it's cost you. Sisko acts like Eddington stabbed him in the heart, but in truth, Sisko's drawing Eddington in. SISKO (to Kira, feigning anger) Major -- Shut that thing off. (to Worf) Prepare to launch torpedoes. EDDINGTON Wait! DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FIVE 61A. 69 CONTINUED: (4) Sisko nods to Kira, allowing Eddington to finish. Eddington takes a moment, he realizes there's only one way out. EDDINGTON (a beat) If you call off your attack... I'll turn over all our biogenic weapons. SISKO Not enough. Eddington knows what Sisko wants and it plays right into his ego. EDDINGTON All right, Javert... I'll give you what you want... Eddington takes a deep breath, and prepares himself to make the ultimate sacrifice. A hero's final grand gesture... EDDINGTON Me. Sisko nods to Kira and the image of Eddington DISAPPEARS. The second it does, Sisko leans back and lets out a big SIGH of relief. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FIVE 62. 70 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) (STOCK) Re-establishing. SISKO (V.O.) Captain's Log: Supplemental. Resettlement efforts in the DMZ are underway. The Cardassian and Maquis colonists who were forced to abandon their homes will make new lives for themselves on the planets their counterparts evacuated. 71 INT. DOCKING RING - AIRLOCK Odo awaits as the airlock OPENS, revealing Sisko and Dax and allowing them to emerge. SISKO (V.O.) (continuing) The balance in the region will be restored, though the situation remains far from stable. ODO Captain. Commander. Welcome home. SISKO It's good to be back. ODO I understand your trip was... productive. Without answering, Sisko turns back to face the airlock; he wants to see the SECURITY DETAIL escorting Eddington. 72 NEW ANGLE as Eddington and Sisko exchange a long, silent stare. A stare which is finally broken by Sisko. DEEP SPACE NINE: "... Uniform" - REV. 11/26/96 - ACT FIVE 63. 72 CONTINUED: SISKO (without taking his eyes off Eddington) Constable. Odo takes charge of Eddington, grabbing him by the arm and leading him away. 73 HOLD ON SISKO AND DAX as they watch Eddington being led off to the holding cell. DAX I'm curious, Benjamin... your plan to poison the Maquis planets -- you didn't clear it with Starfleet, did you? SISKO I knew I'd forgotten to do something. Dax nods her head, impressed. DAX Big gamble. SISKO (it was nothing) That's what it takes to be a good villain. They start walking down the corridor. DAX You know... sometimes I like it when the bad guy wins. Sisko allows himself the smallest of grins. And on that, we: FADE OUT. END OF ACT FIVE THE END
