SISKO and ODO are sitting together at a table, drinking their morning coffee. ODO What do you think of the O'Brien's plan to name their baby Sean? SISKO I kind of like it. "Sean." It's got a nice ring to it. ODO Except in Bajoran it means "swamp." Sisko reacts, surprised. SISKO Do the O'Briens know that? ODO I doubt it. SISKO Someone should tell them. ODO I nominate you. Just then, DAX comes over with a cup of raktajino and Joins them. DAX Morning. As she sits, she rubs her neck with a groan. ODO Neck bothering you again? DAX It's just a muscle pull. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - TEASER 2. 1 CONTINUED: SISKO What is that, the eighth muscle pull this month? ODO Actually, I believe Commander Dax has been treated for seven muscle pulls, two contusions, and three cracked ribs. The only person who's spent more time in the Infirmary in the past few weeks is Commander Worf. SISKO Isn't there any way for the two of you to... you know... DAX Make love? SISKO ... without injuring yourselves? DAX Interspecies romance isn't without it's dangers. That's part of the fun. (brightens) Maybe we'll have better luck on Risa. SISKO Risa? I thought you and Worf were going to take your vacation on Earth. DAX That was Worf's suggestion. I changed his mind. ODO From what I hear, Risa makes the Hoobishan Baths look like a monastery. SISKO I hope they have a good hospital. (smiles) I can't believe you actually convinced Worf to go to a pleasure planet with you. He must really be loosening up. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - TEASER 3. 1 CONTINUED: (2) ODO I haven't noticed. SISKO Come to think of it, neither have I. DAX Oh, he's still the same old Worf. Dax nods towards the replicators. Sisko and Odo turn to see WORF ordering his morning drink. WORF Prune juice. Extra large. DAX See what I mean? She waves Worf over and he joins them. WORF Captain, commander, Constable. He takes a seat. SISKO Dax said you're going to Risa. Worf look accusingly at Dax. WORF Did she? DAX (defensive) It's no secret. WORF Apparently not. ODO You must be looking forward to it. WORF I am "looking forward" to spending some time alone with Lieutenant Commander Dax. Dax smiles at this admission. DAX Isn't he sweet? But Worf remains stoic. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - TEASER 4. 1 CONTINUED: (3) WORF We have much to discuss. SISKO About what? WORF It is a private matter. DAX Worf is upset that I had lunch with Captain Boday. ODO The Gallamite? The mention of his name instantly puts Worf in a bad mood. WORF His skull is transparent. DAX And if you couldn't see his brains, would it make you feel better? WORF It is not proper for you to have lunch with an ex-lover while we are together. DAX Worf, we were just talking. You have to learn to trust me a little more. WORF I trust you. But I do not trust Captain Boday. Sisko and Odo can see that Worf and Dax have some issues to resolve, so they look to make a graceful exit. ODO I can see it's going to be quite a trip. SISKO You'll have to tell us all about it when you get back. WORF I'm sure she will. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - TEASER 4A. 1 CONTINUED: (4) Sisko and Odo EXIT, leaving Worf and Dax alone. 2 NEW ANGLE On the two of them. Dax can tell that Worf is not too happy with her right now. WORF I don't see why you feel the need to talk about our personal life with other people. DAX And I don't see why you feel the need to control my every move. (a beat) Besides, they're not "other people." Benjamin and Odo are my friends. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - TEASER 5. 2 CONTINUED: Just then BASHIR and LEETA, his dabo girl paramour, arrive at the table. BASHIR Jadzia. Worf. We've been looking for you. (to Dax) I was thinking about this trip you're taking to Risa. Worf looks over at Dax. DAX (defensive) He's a friend, too. LEETA Julian and I were talking it over, and we'd like to come along... if that's all right. Dax looks over at Worf, who does not look pleased. DAX Actually, we were hoping for some time alone together. BASHIR And you'll have it. LEETA Once we get to Risa, you'll never even see us. Dax knows Worf wants to say no and makes a preemptive strike. DAX (to Worf) There's no harm in sharing the runabout. Worf isn't happy with this, but he decides not to make an issue of it. WORF I suppose not. LEETA (to Worf) Thank you so much. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - TEASER 6. 2 CONTINUED: (2) She hugs Worf. LEETA (to Bashir) I'm going to go pack. She EXITS. BASHIR (to Worf) Commander... WORF Do not hug me. BASHIR I promise, we'll stay out of your hair. WORF Good. Because we... (to Dax, pointedly) Have much to discuss. 3 CLOSE ON DAX Who sighs and nods in resignation. 4 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Establishing. 5 INT. HABITAT RING CORRIDOR Dax and Worf are headed for the runabout, carrying twenty-fourth century-style duffel bags. Sisko's walking along with them. SISKO I wish I was going with you. Dax and I had some great times on Risa. Worf looks from Sisko to Dax and then over back to Sisko. SISKO (clarifying) Curzon Dax. WORF Yes, of course. Curzon. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - TEASER 7. 5 CONTINUED: SISKO Have fun. Worf nods and he and Dax EXIT into the turbolift. 6 INT. DOCKING RING CORRIDOR Worf and Dax EXIT the turbolift into the corridor and almost run into... 7 NEW ANGLE QUARK, who's dressed in loud Ferengi vacation wear and is carrying a suitcase. Bashir and Leeta are standing nearby, looking sheepish. QUARK It's about time you got here. The rest of us were ready to leave an hour ago. WORF What is he doing here? QUARK I've always wanted to go to Risa. And this seemed like a perfect opportunity. LEETA (apologetic) He wouldn't give me any time off unless we promised to take him with us. BASHIR I hope this isn't going to be a problem. QUARK Why should there be a problem? We're going to have a wonderful time. (impatient) Now, if you don't mind, Risa awaits. Quark EXITS into the airlock. LEETA Sorry. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - TEASER 8. 7 CONTINUED: She goes into the runabout. Bashir looks at Worf and Dax for a second, at a loss for words, then shakes his head apologetically and follows Leeta. 8 CLOSE ON DAX AND WORF As they react to this latest development. WORF Jadzia... DAX I know, I know. We have much to discuss. Hold on Worf for a beat. He is not pleased. Resigned, he and Dax EXIT to the Runabout and we... FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 9. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes) 9 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) The Runabout at warp. 10 INT. RUNABOUT Worf is piloting the ship. Dax is in the co-pilot's seat and Bashir is lounging at one of the side consoles. Leeta ENTERS carrying a tray of beverages. LEETA (gives Dax a drink) Let's see. That's a raktajino for you. (hands a cup to Bashir) A Tarkalean tea. (and finally for Worf) And an extra-large prune juice. Dax shakes her head with disapproval. DAX Leeta, you're on vacation, not in Quark's. You don't have to serve us. LEETA It gives me something to do. Space travel's so dull. Have you ever noticed that all the stars look the same? Worf bristles. 11 NEW ANGLE Quark pokes his head out of the back. He's carrying a small sack. QUARK Excuse me, but I believe I ordered a snail juice. Hand-squeezed. LEETA Get it yourself. I'm on vacation. Quark looks miserable. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 10. 11 CONTINUED: QUARK How much longer until we get there? DAX Another six hours. QUARK (impatient) Six hours. WORF (to Dax) Tell the Ferengi to return to his cabin. QUARK You call that a cabin? It's a cot and a waste disposal unit. It's so small even I can't stand up in there. Look. I'm developing a slouch. WORF (losing patience) Tell the Ferengi to return to his cabin. Now. DAX (admonishing) Quark. QUARK What's he going to do? Turn around and take me home? Ruin everyone's vacation? Worf immediately begins altering course. WORF Coming about. Setting course for Deep Space Nine. QUARK Okay, okay. You made your point. I'm going. (hefting the sack) But first, I have a little present for everyone. Quark reaches into the bag and begins handing out horga'hns, the distinctive carved wood fertility icons of Risa. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 11 CONTINUED: (2) QUARK (to Bashir, Leeta, and Dax) One for you, one for you, one for you... (reaching Worf) And none for you. Leeta looks at the horga'hn, mystified. LEETA What's this? BASHIR It's a horga'hn. The Risian symbol of fertility. QUARK Displaying one to the locals indicates you're seeking jamaharon. LEETA What's jamaharon? BASHIR I'll show you later. Leeta thinks about it for a second, then realizes what he means. LEETA Oh. She holds up her horga'hn in front of Bashir. He smiles and holds his up too. LEETA (re: the horga'hns) Look, they like each other. QUARK (as he exits) I think I'm going to be sick. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 12. 11 CONTINUED: (3) Worf glares over at Quark. QUARK All right, I'm going. Quark EXITS. DAX So am I. WORF Going? Where? DAX To change into something more comfortable. You don't think I'm going to beam down to Risa dressed like this, do you? She gets up to leave. LEETA That's a good idea. Leeta follows her. Bashir looks at Worf and then shrugs as if bowing to the inevitable. BASHIR When in Rome... They all EXIT, leaving Worf alone to pilot the ship. 12 CLOSE ON WORF This vacation is not going the way he'd hoped. CUT TO: 13 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) The Runabout in orbit of a beautiful blue green world. 14 EXT. RISA - TEMTIBI LAGOON - DAY If you had your choice of anyplace in the galaxy, this is where you'd want to be. Not only is the setting beautiful, but the people aren't bad either. Clothing is casual to the point of nonexistence, and the mood is one of unselfconscious ease and contentment. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 13. 15 NEW ANGLE (OPTICALY Dax, Worf, Bashir, Quark and Leeta MATERIALIZE in the middle.of the festivities. Everyone's dressed in beachwear except Worf. Dax is wearing a very sexy swimming outfit, covered by a wrap. Even still, it shows off more spots than we've ever seen before. And we now know without a shadow of a doubt that neither Bashir nor Leeta have any spots whatsoever. They all look around, drinking in the sceneny. LEETA I can't believe we finally made it. Bashir and Leeta kiss, then they break off their embrace and smile at their traveling companions. BASHIR Well, enjoy your vacation. LEETA We will. They EXIT. Quark reaches into his sack and takes out a pair of horga'hns, gripping one in each fist like a gunfighter ready for action. QUARK Time to test these babies out. TWO beautiful, scantily clad RISIAN WOMEN walk by. QUARK Oh, ladies. Quark proudly displays his horga'hns. The Risian women approach Quark. RISIAN WOMAN #1 You seek jamaharon? QUARK I seek whatever you've got. RISIAN WOMAN #2 All that is ours is yours. QUARK (in heaven) I'll take it. He presents an arm to each woman, they take them, and the three walk off together. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 14. 16 CLOSE ON WORF AND DAX As they look around, finally alone. DAX Aren't you uncomfortable in that uniform? As a matter of fact, Worf is feeling a bit uncomfortable, but he's not going to admit it to Dax. WORF Starfleet uniforms are designed for comfort in even the most extreme environments. DAX You look so... out of place. I mean, look around you. Isn't it beautiful? WORF It's an artificially created paradise, maintained by the most elaborate weather control system in the Federation. In it's natural state, Risa is nothing but a rain soaked, geologically unstable jungle. DAX Maybe so, but right now the only dark cloud I can see is you. WORF I did not come here to admire the scenery. DAX If you say so. She casually shrugs off her wrap, uncovering even more spots. DAX I guess we might as well go home. WORF I wouldn't be so hasty. DAX I take it the scenery has improved? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 16 CONTINUED: WORF A few months ago, when I was commanding the Defiant on a scouting mission into the Gamma Quadrant, we encountered a protostar cluster. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 14A. 16 CONTINUED: (2) WORF (Cont'd) A swirling mass of color, set against a background of glowing clouds and burning sky. It was the most beautiful thing I ever saw... until now. Dax soaks up the compliment for a beat, then smiles. DAX I've got to take you on vacation more often. Dax steps up to Worf and the two of them begin to kiss. Just then... WOMAN'S VOICE Dax? Is that you? Dax and Worf turn around and see... 17 NEW ANGLE A striking Risian woman in her thirties approaching them. This is ARANDIS, the Head Facilitator of Temtibi Lagoon, which makes her something of a High Priestess for Risa's sybaritic lifestyle. Dax smiles as she recognizes Arandis. DAX (excited) Arandis. I was wondering if you were still here. ARANDIS Not only am I still here, I've been promoted. I'm Chief Facilitator for the entire Temtibi Lagoon. Worf looks uncomfortably from Dax to Arandis. DAX Worf, this is Arandis. WORF (with disapproval) A friend of Curzon's. DAX She and Curzon spent a lot of time together on his last trip here. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 16. 17 CONTINUED: ARANDIS We had a wonderful time. (a little guilty) Until I killed him. WORF Killed him? Arandis shakes her head. She still feels a little guilty. ARANDIS Death by jamaharon. (to Dax) I suppose there are worse ways To go. DAX (reassuring her) Trust me. He died happy. ARANDIS He was a very sweet old man. Worf is clearly uncomfortable being confronted with Dax's masculine past. WORF I'll take your word for it. Arandis looks at Dax and smiles. ARANDIS (with affection) It's good to see you again, Dax. Your new host is very attractive. DAX I like to think so. You haven't aged a day. ARANDIS Risa's been kind to me. Worf doesn't like the way this conversation is going. ARANDIS Come on. Let me show you around the lagoon. WORF Maybe later. Arandis gets the hint. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 17. 17 CONTINUED: (2) ARANDIS Of course. (a formal parting) All that is ours is yours. WORF Thank you. But we have everything we need. Arandis nods and leaves. 18 CLOSE ON DAX AND WORF Dax knows Worf is angry, but she's a little annoyed herself. DAX That wasn't very nice. WORF Why? Is there something of hers you want? DAX Arandis was Curzon's lover, not mine. WORF I hope you remember that. Dax realizes what this is all about. DAX You're still angry about Captain Boday. WORF If I am angry, it's because you do not take our relationship seriously. DAX Worf, we just got here. Do we have to start arguing again? Apparently so. WORF If you were a Klingon woman, we would already be married. DAX In case you haven't noticed, I'm not a Klingon woman. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 18. 18 CONTINUED: WORF That's no excuse. I have been loyal to you. And I expect you to be loyal to me in return. DAX I have been loyal to you. But I'm not going to let you run my life. WORF I'm not trying to run your life. DAX Good. Then I'm going to go have a nice big glass of icoberry juice. Worf tries not to be baited, but he is getting exasperated. WORF That would be a mistake. You are allergic to icoberry juice. It makes your spots itch. DAX But I like the taste. WORF Fine. Have as much icoberry juice as you like. (a beat) But it is a mistake. Dax isn't looking for a fight. She tries to calm Worf down. DAX But it's my mistake to make. (smiles) Now what do you say you go up to our room, put on a bathing suit, and we'll go for a swim in the lagoon. Worf can see he's not going to make much headway right now. WORF As you wish. Dax kisses him. DAX Hurry back. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 18A. 18 CONTINUED: (2) Worf takes another look at Dax in her swimwear, then EXITS.. 19 INT. DAX AND WORF'S GUEST CHAMBER - DAY This can be somewhat similar to Picard's room in "Captain's Holiday." It's an airy, bright environment with large windows and an abundance of plants (but please lose the ceiling fans). We open close on a skimpy twenty-fourth century bathing suit (male), then pull back to reveal Worf, looking at it dubiously, trying to think of a way to avoid wearing it. Just in the hick of time, the door CHIMES. Worf puts aside the bathing suit. WORF Come in. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT ONE 19. 19 CONTINUED:, There's a distinguished looking man at the door, dressed in a conservative Federation-style suit. He looks every bit as out of place on Risa as Worf does. This is PASCAL FULLERTON. And he's on a mission from (a philosophical construct that might be interpreted as) God. FULLERTON I hope I'm not disturbing you... (checks the pips) ... lieutenant commander. My name is Pascal Fullerton. I'm the Chairman of the New Essentialists Movement. WORF I'm not familiar with that organization. FULLERTON We're dedicated to restoring the moral and cultural traditions of the Federation. Fullerton hands Worf a PADD. FULLERTON This is our statement of principles. And if you want to hear more, we're holding a rally later this afternoon. WORF On Risa? FULLERTON What better place? This world revels in the kind of self- indulgence that's eroding the foundations of Federation society. And we intend to shut it down. This piques Worf's curiosity. And as he takes the PADD, we... FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " REV. 09/23/96 - ACT TWO 20. ACT TWO FADE IN: 20 INT. RISIAN SOLARIUM - DAY This is a large common room lit by (off screen) skylights and subdivided into smaller chambers by hanging translucent silk curtains. It serves as a combination restaurant/lounge/gathering place for the Temtibi Lagoon. There's constant foot traffic winding through the different subchambers, which are full of people lounging on cushions, doing yoga-like exercises, working on art, getting massages or eating sumptuous meals. It's not a place to come to for privacy, but it's still not uncommon to walk through chambers occupied by couples cuddling romantically or find someone proudly displaying a horga'hn. Worf and Dax make their way through the solarium. Dax is still dressed in her swimwear, but Worf hasn't yet removed his uniform. He's deeply engrossed in reading the Essentialists' manifesto, all but oblivious to the numerous beautiful bodies (of both sexes) surrounding him. Dax and Worf ENTER another chamber. Here, a woman is teaching a man to play a harp-like instrument. She reaches her arms around his to guide his hands. Worf continues reading the PADD. DAX I really wish you'd stop reading that. WORF I would not dismiss Fullerton so quickly. His analysis of recent Federation history is insightful. And very disturbing. Dax and Worf pass two scantily clad couples who are playing a game that involves balancing on each other, shifting into artistically pleasing positions (think Cirque du Soleil). DAX What's disturbing is that you're still wearing that uniform. WORF It would not hurt you to read this. Worf and Dax walk through yet another curtain. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT TWO 21. 21 NEW ANGLE On a subchamber occupied by Leeta, who is lying naked on a table while a handsome Risian host anoints her with oil, then runs a small high-tech device over her back. LEETA Mmm. The host continues to apply the device. Leeta picks up a discussion that's been going on for a while. LEETA The truth is, not everyone can be a dabo girl. First of all, you have to be able to wear the clothes, and believe me, that's not easy. You have to be able to calculate odds in your head very quickly, and most importantly, you need a very supple wrist. She roles toward him, exposing her upper body to him (but not to the audience), takes his hand and shows him how to spin an imaginary wheel. LEETA Like this. Dabo. While Leeta holds her host's hand, Worf and Dax ENTER. She's looking at the PADD. DAX Worf, people have been predicting the end of the Federation since the day it was founded. Trust me, I know... Dax trails off as she and Worf spot Leeta in this very compromising position. LEETA (guiltless) Oh, hi. Both Worf and Dax are a little taken aback. DAX Leeta... what a surprise. LEETA Care to join us? We were just about to take a reyamilk soak. DAX Maybe later. Dax heads for the nearest curtain, tugging on Worf's arm. He follows her. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT TWO 22. 22 CLOSE ON WORF AND DAX As they ENTER yet another subchamber. This one's empty except for a cage with a pair of songbirds. Their whistle is soft, compelling and surprisingly complex. Closer to music than random notes. Worf seems to be taking Leeta's dalliance very personally. WORF That was not Doctor Bashir. DAX Worf, it's none of our business. WORF Are you defending her actions? DAX I'm not defending anything. It's not my business... or yours. (trying to lighten the mood) Now what do you say we sign out a couple of floaters and take in the sights. WORF I cannot. The Essentialists are having a rally and I'm going to attend. DAX You're kidding. (off Worf's look) You're not kidding. Worf opens up the curtain and ushers Dax out of the chamber. 23 EXT. RISA - DAY (MATTE) A view of the breathtaking Temtibi coast. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT TWO 23. 24 EXT. RISA - TEMTIBI LAGOON - DAY A surprisingly large crowd is gathering to hear Fullerton speak. There is a festive atmosphere as if most of the guests see this as just one more entertainment. Worf and Dax join the assembly. DAX (surprised at the crowd) Don't these people have anything better to do? WORF Perhaps you underestimate the power of Fullerton's message. Dax looks around. Something catches her eye. DAX The plot thickens. Worf follows Dax's gaze and sees... 25 NEW ANGLE Bashir standing on the other side on the crowd, arm-in- arm with a beautiful Risian woman. DAX And you were worried about Julian. WORF Why are he and Leeta not together? DAX I don't know. But don't jump to conclusions. I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation. But Worf isn't buying it. He looks over Dax's shoulders and sees something he doesn't like. WORF This place is a bad influence on people. Dax follows Worf's gaze and sees Arandis approaching them from the crowd. ARANDIS Here for the show? WORF I would not call it a show. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT TWO 24. 25 CONTINUED: ARANDIS Really? I find Mister Fullerton very entertaining. DAX He seems pretty determined to discourage people from coming here. ARANDIS Risa receives millions of visitors every year. And all of them leave happier than when they arrived. I don't see how one man, no matter how determined, could change that. WORF Kahless fought off an entire army at Three Turn Bridge. And he was only one man. ARANDIS Fullerton and his Essentialists have been here for almost a month. And no matter how many speeches he gives, the water is still warm, and the wind still smells sweet. (smiles) But if he's enjoying himself, who are we to discourage him? Suddenly, there's a commotion and Fullerton arrives at the gathering, accompanied by a half dozen of his followers. It's a mixed group of men and woman, humans and aliens, but they stand out from the crowd because of their conservative dress and serious demeanors. Fullerton walks to the top of a small rise. The crowd reacts to his arrival with lighthearted curiosity. FULLERTON That's right. Take a good look. I can only imagine what you must think of me. A middle-aged, ponderous academic, sweating under the hot Risian suns, wasting his time telling you things you don't want to hear. (a beat) But you know what I see when I look at you? Children. Pampered spoiled children. During the above, Bashir spots Dax and Worf, kisses his Risian companion good-bye, and joins his friends. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT TWO 25. 25 CONTINUED: (2) BASHIR Am I wrong, or have we just been insulted? FULLERTON Somehow the citizens of the Federation have come to believe that they're entitled to lives of ease and privilege. If you want something to eat, you get it from a replicator. If you want amusement, you go to a holosuite. And if you need protection, you call for Starfleet. But someday, someday soon, you're going to have to learn to take care of yourselves. Worf nods his agreement. FULLERTON Because if I see you as helpless children, then how do you think the Borg see you? Or the Romulans? Or the Klingons or the Dominion? These empires look at the Federation and they see a prize, a prize we've forgotten how to protect. And if we don't change our ways, they're going to take it from us. There's a general murmur from the crowd. Some people begin drifting away while others argue about Fullerton's point. ARANDIS Mister Fullerton certainly has a flair for the dramatic. BASHIR (to Dax) Does he really believe that? DAX I think he does. Fullerton continues to speak. FULLERTON The way I see it, we've got two options. We can either turn our backs on childish things and re- embrace the hard work that built the Federation in the first place... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT TWO 26. 25 CONTINUED: (3) FULLERTON (Cont'd) ... or we can lie here, napping in the sun, until we wake up with Jem'Hadar guns to our heads. The choice is ours. Heaven help us if we make the wrong one. 26 INT. RISIAN SOLARIUM - NIGHT Worf, Dax and Bashir are seated around a floor-level table (think Moroccan), leaning back on cushions as they eat their meal. BASHIR Worf, you can't be serious. WORF I am merely observing that the Klingons never would have attacked if they hadn't believed the Federation was vulnerable. Even now, after the changeling on the Klingon High Council was exposed, some of my people continue to call for war. Because they think they can win. BASHIR None of which has anything to do with Risa. WORF You cannot be certain of that. DAX All I know is I've spent lifetimes defending the Federation, and I deserve a vacation every now and then. Just then... LEETA (O.S.) Julian. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT TWO 27. 27 NEW ANGLE Everyone turns and sees Leeta as she parts one of the silk hangings and ENTERS their subchamber. Both Dax and Worf find this an awkward moment. They look to Bashir, who seems genuinely happy to see Leeta, despite the fact that they're both with other people. LEETA There you are. She kisses Bashir hello and sits down. LEETA I'm so glad we came here. I'm having the most wonderful time. BASHIR I told you this was just what we needed. Worf can't believe this. Right now both Bashir and Leeta seem to be incredibly deceitful people in his eyes. He slams his mug down on the table with more force than he intended. BASHIR Something wrong? DAX (cautioning Worf) It's nothing. There's a beat, then Worf can't contain himself any longer. WORF The two of you dishonor each other with your actions. LEETA (to Bashir) Do you know what he's talking about? Bashir's beginning to suspect. He acts as if he forgot to do something important. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT TWO 28. 27 CONTINUED: BASHIR (to all) You mean, we never told you why we came here? From reactions, it's clear they haven't. BASHIR We're conducting the Rite of Separation. LEETA It's an old Bajoran custom. When a couple separates, they spend several days celebrating their parting. It's a way to remember all the good times, and to seek out new... opportunities. BASHIR (grins) It's a wise and ancient culture. LEETA (to Bashir) You know, Julian, I don't think I've completely gotten you out of my system yet. BASHIR I know exactly what you mean. (to all) Excuse us. We have a few little... details to work out. Leeta and Bashir EXIT. Worf still looks disturbed. WORF Terminating a relationship should not be treated so... frivolously. DAX Not every relationship has to end like a Klingon opera. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT TWO 29. 27 CONTINUED: (2) WORF No. Only the ones that mean something. Suddenly we hear a loud commotion, the sounds of things breaking and tables being over turned. 28 CLOSE ON WORF AND DAX As they react to the sound. They both leap to their feet and push aside their curtain and see... 29 NEW ANGLE A group of Essentialists carrying phaser rifles bursts into the Solarium. They begin intimidating guests and pulling down the curtains. One of the Essentialists, Fullerton's BOLIAN AIDE, levels a phaser rifle at Dax and Worf. BOLIAN AIDE Stay where you are. 30 CLOSE ON DAX AND WORF As they react to this threat we. FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 30. ACT THREE FADE IN: 31 INT. RISIAN SOLARIUM - NIGHT 31, The Essentialists' orgy of destruction continues, but it's being carried out in a very methodical and unemotional way. 32 CLOSE ON WORF AND DAX Dax signals Worf with her eyes. If they coordinate their attack, one of them should be able to get the gun. DAX On three. One... But Worf shakes his head. There's more going on here than meets the eye. For all their apparent belligerence, the Essentialists are being very careful not to hurt anyone. WORF Wait. Dax looks surprised. But before she can respond, Worf's instincts prove true as... 33 NEW ANGLE Fullerton steps into the room. FULLERTON That's enough. His people immediately cease their "rampage." FULLERTON Well, I hope we've proved our point. The Essentialists relax. Dax uses this opening to wrest away one of the Essentialist's weapon. She raises it, then looks puzzled. DAX The power cells are empty. FULLERTON We have no intention of hurting anyone. Dax lowers the rifle. DAX I don't understand. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 31. 33 CONTINUED: FULLERTON (to the crowd) You think you're safe here in this "paradise" of yours. But you're not. What if we had been Jem'Hadar or Klingons or Romulans. You'd all be dead. Fullerton looks at Dax and Worf. FULLERTON Even you -- Starfleet officers -- were lulled into a false sense of security. If you can be taken unaware, what chance do the rest of us have? (to all) The sad truth is... the galaxy is a hostile place. Forget that, even for a moment, and you risk losing everything. 34 CLOSE ON WORF As he reacts to Fullerton's words of warning. They're sentiments that Worf shares. FULLERTON Just something to think about while you wait for your desserts. With that the Essentialists disperse and Dax makes a beeline for Fullerton. Worf follows her. DAX As a Starfleet Officer, I have the authority to arrest you for what you just did. FULLERTON But that would be a waste of time. We both know the Risians won't prosecute. They don't have the courage for it. Believe me, I wish they did. Fullerton turns his attention to Worf. FULLERTON what did you think of our little demonstration, Commander Worf? WORF I can't condone what you did. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 34 CONTINUED: FULLERTON Maybe not, but I think you understand it. Worf doesn't deny it. Fullerton smiles and EXITS. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 32. 35 CLOSE ON DAX As she studies Worf, realizing that the gulf between them is widening. 36 OMITTED 37 INT. DAX AND WORF'S GUEST CHAMBER - NIGHT Worf is sitting in a chair, brooding. Dax comes out of the bedroom wearing a nightgown. She looks good. DAX I don't know about you, but it's past my bedtime. WORF We need to talk. DAX About the Essentialists? WORF About us. DAX Oh, I suppose you've got another list of things I'm doing wrong. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 33. 37 CONTINUED: WORF I didn't say you were doing anything wrong. It's just that some of your behavior... DAX What about my behavior? WORF At times, you are too impulsive. You act without thinking. You have no self-control. DAX And you think I need you to control me? WORF Jadzia, you are my Par'machkai. And that means everything you do reflects on me. DAX (bristling) I'm sorry if I embarrass you. WORF I just want to know that you take this relationship as seriously as I do. DAX And I just wish you'd relax a little and let yourself enjoy what we have together. (a beat) Worf, I'm not going to change who I am. WORF Nor am I. For a moment it looks like the whole relationship is going to end right there, but Dax doesn't want that to happen and pulls back. DAX (false cheerfulness) Well, at least we agree on something. Now, what do you say we go to bed. But Worf's still got things to think about. WORF You go. I will be there shortly. Dax knows that Worf will be up for a while. She decides not to fight it and EXITS into the bedroom. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 33A. 38 CLOSE ON WORF Now alone in the sitting room of their chamber. He stares at the horga'hn Quark gave to Dax, then looks away in disgust. 39 EXT. RISA - TEMTIBI LAGOON - DAY Another beautiful day in paradise, 40 INT. RISIAN SOLARIUM - DAY Dax ENTERS to find Arandis directing a group of Risians who are busy putting the finishing touches on a repaired Solarium. Dax is in a melancholy mood, but she manages a smile when she realizes how far along the repairs have come. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 34. 40 CONTINUED: DAX This place looks a lot better than it did last night. I guess Risians aren't as lethargic as the Essentialists would like everyone to believe. ARANDIS The Essentialists are wrong about many things. (a beat) What that Mister Fullerton needs is a little jamaharon. (smiles) No. A lot of jamaharon. Dax laughs. DAX I'd buy him a horga'hn myself if I thought held take it. Arandis studies Dax for a beat. ARANDIS It looks like he's not the only one who could use some cheering up. DAX I've had better vacations. ARANDIS (mock alarm) Better than Risa? DAX I never knew a Klingon who had a tougher time enjoying himself. ARANDIS That's no reason for you not to have a good time. Risa is famous for its... diversions. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 35. 40 CONTINUED: (2) Arandis glances toward an attractive (and half-naked) Risian man who's helping to clean up the Solarium. DAX I wish it was that simple. ARANDIS It was for Curzon Dax. And I can tell, there's more than a little Curzon in you. DAX He really loved this planet. ARANDIS (a fond memory) And Risa loved him. Dax tries to snap out of her doldrums. DAX Why don't I give you a hand cleaning up? Arandis smiles appreciatively. She could use the help. ARANDIS All that is ours is yours. And with a shared smile, Dax pitches in with the repairs. 41 EXT. RISA - TEMTIBI LAGOON - DAY Bashir and Leeta and kneeling in front of each other, looking into each other's eyes with fondness. They're in the middle of the Bajoran Rite of Separation. LEETA (reciting the ceremony) Our paths have grown apart. She takes a drink from a shallow bowl, then hands it to Bashir. BASHIR (also reciting) What was one is now two. He also takes a sip. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 36. 41 CONTINUED: LEETA The time of sharing is over. Leeta takes the bowl and smashes it. LEETA May the Prophets guide you toward the path of happiness. BASHIR And may they walk with you always. Bashir and Leeta lean forward slowly as if to give each other one last passionate kiss, but just before their lips touch, they ritualistically turn their heads away from each other. This ends the ceremony, they stand up, no longer a couple. 42 NEW ANGLE To reveal Quark, who has been acting as their witness. He's carrying a new edition of his everpresent horga'hn. QUARK That's it? LEETA That's it. Bashir and Leeta start walking. Quark follows them. BASHIR What were you expecting? QUARK I was expecting some fireworks. Where's the anger, the vicious name-calling, the irrational accusations? I never would've agreed to be a witness if I knew you were going to be so... civil. It's disgusting. BASHIR Personally, I think it's admirable. No incriminations, no hurt feelings. I've never felt so good about the end of a relationship. LEETA I agree. Now I can finally be honest about my feelings. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/-96 - ACT THREE 37. 42 CONTINUED: This stops Bashir in his tracks. Quark's ears perk up at the sound of potential conflict. BASHIR What does that mean? LEETA (a difficult admission) It's just... for the past few months I've been... I don't know... thinking a lot about... another man. QUARK Let me get this straight, while you were still dating Julian here, you were having fantasies about someone else. Leeta looks uncomfortable. LEETA I'd rather not discuss it now. But Bashir wants everything out in the open. BASHIR You brought it up, you might as well tell me who it is. QUARK Yes, do tell. LEETA It's... She looks at Quark. QUARK Me? LEETA Your brother Rom. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 38. 42 CONTINUED: (2) QUARK (shocked) My brother Rom? BASHIR (even more shocked) His brother Rom? LEETA He's so cute. And very sexy. She walks away, lost in her own thoughts. 43 CLOSE ON BASHIR AND QUARK Both flabbergasted by Leeta's confession. BASHIR Cute? QUARK Sexy? BASHIR AND QUARK Rom? Quark hands Bashir his horga'hn. QUARK Here. You need this more than I do. 44 INT. RISIAN SOLARIUM - DAY Worf, dressed in his uniform, is walking through the Solarium. By now it's back to business as usual and Worf still looks distinctly out of place surrounded by so many half-naked people. We follow Worf through one or two chambers until he parts a curtain and looks into... 45 NEW ANGLE A subchamber a little longer than most. At the far end, Dax is sitting at a stool with her eyes closed, molding wet clay. Arandis is standing behind her guiding her hands as she manipulates the clay. ARANDIS Doesn't the clay feel good? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE - 39. 45 CONTINUED: DAX Wonderful. ARANDIS Now pour your emotions into it. Begin to mold it. Feel the texture in your hands. 46 CLOSE ON WORF As he reacts to this scene. Seeing Arandis and Dax together, it's easy to leap to the wrong conclusion, and Worf does. WORF Dax. Dax opens her eyes and sees Worf. DAX (surprised) Worf? He turns and leaves. Dax knows what he's thinking, and it ticks her off that he trusts her so little. DAX (shouts after him) Worf! But he EXITS, leaving Dax angry and not knowing what to do next. 47 OMITTED DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 40. 48 INT. DAX AND WORF'S GUEST CHAMBER - DAY Worf ENTERS fuming. Worf looks around the room and sees Dax's horga'hn. He picks it up and looks at it. But this just makes him more angry and he ends up smashing it against a wall. 49 CLOSE ON WORF As he ponders what to do next. 50 OMITTED 51 INT. FULLERTON'S GUEST CHAMBER - DAY This room is basically identical to Worf and Dax's. Fullerton, his BOLIAN AIDE and a handful of other Essentialists are gathered around a table, plotting strategy. FULLERTON I'm tired of giving speeches. It's time we took action. BOLIAN AIDE We've taken action. The raid on the Solarium... FULLERTON It'll be forgotten by tomorrow. Just then, the door CHIMES. The Bolian Aide looks worried, but Fullerton signals for him to relax. FULLERTON Enter. 52 NEW ANGLE As Worf ENTERS the room, looking focused and in control for the first time in days, comfortable now that he has decided to take action. FULLERTON Mister Worf? WORF You want to make people leave Risa? I think I know a way. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT THREE 41. 52 CONTINUED: And on Worf's look of determination, we FADE OUT. END OF ACT THREE DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FOUR 42. ACT FOUR FADE IN: 53 INT. DAX AND WORF'S GUEST CHAMBER - DAY Dax, her spirits low, is picking at a plate of fruit while Bashir and Quark keep her company. BASHIR I have to admit, I probably would've reacted the same way Worf did. I know Arandis was Curzon's lover, not yours, but if I'd walked in and seen the two of you together... trying to figure you out at any given moment isn't exactly easy. QUARK I like that about her. BASHIR So do I. It's why I chased after her for so long. DAX Would you please stop talking about me like I'm not here. BASHIR But it's also why I stopped chasing her. (to Dax) You're too much work. DAX Worf is the one who's too much work. QUARK What you need is a Ferengi. DAX Maybe. (a glum admission) But what I want is Worf. This is one thing Bashir's never understood. BASHIR Why? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FOUR 43. 53 CONTINUED: DAX (thinks about it) Because he has the courage of a berserker cat and the heart of a poet. QUARK And the brain of a pigheaded idiot. DAX (begrudging) Sometimes. As they are speaking, the doors open and Arandis ENTERS. DAX Any luck? ARANDIS I'm afraid not. None of the staff has seen him. But I'm sure he'll turn up. QUARK Well, no sense waiting around here for him. I say we all take some floaters up into the hills and go skinny dipping in the hot springs. BASHIR I never thought I'd say this... but I'm with Quark. Suddenly, LIGHTNING flashes across the window, followed almost immediately by a CRACK OF THUNDER. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FOUR 53 CONTINUED: (2) DAX What was that? Everyone turns their attention to the window. 54 NEW ANGLE - ON THE WINDOW Without further warning, the skies open up, letting loose a torrential downpour. QUARK Great. Just what we needed. Both Quark and Bashir look disappointed by the change in weather, but Arandis and Dax have a much more concerned reaction. DAX I thought it wasn't supposed to rain in this part of Risa. ARANDIS It's not. Something must've gone wrong with the weather grid. And as everyone reacts to this... CUT TO: 55 INT. RISIAN SOLARIUM - DAY The illumination from the skylights ripples from the rainfall, which is now pounding down even harder. Thunder rumbles in the distance and a chill wind roars through the trees. Suddenly, it's hurricane season on Risa. Arandis ENTERS the Solarium, followed by Dax, Bashir and Quark. The room is full of confused, soaking wet people who've just rushed in from the storm. This is not what they were promised in the travel brochures. Arandis takes charge. ARANDIS Could I please have your attention. Obviously the weather grid is experiencing some kind of malfunction. But I'm sure we'll be able to repair it soon. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FOUR 45. 55 CONTINUED: FULLERTON (O.S.) No you won't. Everyone turns and sees Fullerton and his Essentialists ENTER the room. DAX (to Fullerton) You're responsible for this? FULLERTON I authorized it. But it wasn't my idea. To Dax's surprise and dismay, Worf ENTERS the room and joins the Essentialists. He's carrying a tricorder modified into an UPLINK, which he's used to sabotage the weather control grid. WORF It was mine. BASHIR You're not serious. DAX He's serious. What did you do, Worf? Build an uplink so you could take control of the weather grid? Worf looks down at the modified tricorder. WORF The grid has been deactivated. It'll take three or four days to restore the system to normal operation. During that time, the inhabitants of Risa and their guests will experience the planet's natural weather cycle. ARANDIS And for most of Risa, that means rain. And plenty of it. QUARK But why are you doing this? FULLERTON Because Risa is an illusion created by weather control systems, industrial replicators, and seismic regulators. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FOUR 46. 55 CONTINUED: (2) FULLERTON (Cont'd) And if the Federation is going to survive, we're going to have to stop wasting our time with toys and get back to the essentials. Fullerton EXITS. ARANDIS (to Dax) I'm beginning to think there's no hope for that man. (to Worf, with regret) or for you either, Mister Worf. Arandis leaves. Worf waits, knowing that Dax and the others will have something to say. And sure enough, they make a beeline for him. BASHIR (heated) Commander, with all due respect... have you lost you mind? WORF I think you'll find me quite rational. QUARK As rational as Klingons get, anyway. DAX Worf, this is wrong. WORF I disagree. If Federation citizens cannot handle a little bad weather, how will they handle a Dominion invasion? Worf EXITS. 56 EXT. RISA - DAY (MATTE) The rain keeps pouring down. 57 INT. RISIAN SOLARIUM - DAY From the flickering shadows and intermittent thunder we can tell that the storm is still going unabated. But Dax is still dressed for the sun. She's sitting on a divan, basking in the glow of a high-tech sunlamp. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FOUR 47. 57 CONTINUED: In the background, we can see that there are fewer people in the resort and those that are still present are looking somewhat discontented. But no one looks quite as disheartened as those guests who have just come inside after trying to enjoy themselves in the rain. They're cold, wet and miserable, bundled up in layers of clothing they never thought they'd have to wear on Risa. Quark ENTERS soaked through with rainwater and looking very unhappy. He joins Dax. QUARK I've seen drier days on Ferenginar. And we have a hundred and seventy-eight different words for rain. Right now it's "glebbening" out there. And that's bad. DAX If you're so unhappy, take your horga'hn and find some company. Quark shakes his head. He's tried that. QUARK Have you taken a good look at the Risians lately? They're even more depressed than the guests. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FOUR 48. 58 NEW ANGLE As if to prove Quark's point, Arandis approaches them, looking a little down. ARANDIS I'm trying to organize a game of hoverball. Would either of you like to join us? QUARK In the rain? ARANDIS No, on one of the indoor courts. QUARK Indoor hoverball. That's just wrong. DAX (always game) I'll play. ARANDIS (discouraged) Good, that makes one. DAX Having trouble keeping the guests happy? Arandis sits down. She looks tired. ARANDIS I've never heard so much complaining in my life. QUARK No one came here to sit around in the rain. ARANDIS It's not just the weather. People are starting to complain about everything. Their rooms, the entertainment, the food. DAX What's wrong with the food? ARANDIS Nothing, as far as I can tell. But the guests are starting to say it doesn't taste right. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FOUR 49. 58 CONTINUED: QUARK It's the humidity. (off reactions) It dampens the food, makes everything mushy. Trust me. There's no word for "crisp" on Ferenginar. ARANDIS Maybe Mister Fullerton is right. Maybe we have forgotten how to deal with adversity. And off this dour assessment, we... CUT TO: 59 INT. FULLERTON'S GUEST CHAMBER - DAY Fullerton, his Bolian Aide and several other Essentials are discussing their situation with Worf. BOLIAN AIDE According to our figures, the guest population has declined thirty percent in the last three days. WORF And you can be sure the guests who've stayed are taking what you have to say seriously. FULLERTON It's a start. WORF One that you can build on. (a beat) Good luck. FULLERTON You're leaving? WORF I've had my fill of Risa. FULLERTON Mister Worf, you've been an inspiration to us all. Worf EXITS. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FOUR 50. 60 CLOSE ON FULLERTON As he watches Worf go. FULLERTON (to the Bolian Aide) You still have the uplink to the weather control grid? BOLIAN AIDE Right here. The Bolian indicates a jury-rigged Starfleet tricorder. FULLERTON By tomorrow, the weather grid will be restored to normal and no one here will remember this ever happened. (picks up the uplink) But I intend to send a message they won't forget. Fullerton takes the uplink, adjusts a control, and lightning crashes in the background. We... FADE OUT. END OF ACT FOUR DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FIVE 51. ACT FIVE FADE IN: 61 INT. DAX AND WORF'S GUEST CHAMBER - DAY Rain beats down on the window while Worf practices his Klingon tai-chi. Dax comes in. She's barely inside when she launches into Worf. DAX I bet you're feeling pretty good right now. The weather's terrible, the guests are miserable, and more and more people are leaving Risa every day. WORF Their response only proves my point. DAX I see. You ruined the vacations of a few hundred thousand people to bolster the moral fiber of the Federation. Worf's hurt that Dax isn't more sympathetic. WORF (with regret) I don't expect you to understand. DAX I understand. Even better than you do. What you did had nothing to do with Risa, or the Essentialists, or the Federation. (a beat) It was about you and me. WORF You give yourself far too much credit. DAX Do I? You think I'm irresponsible, frivolous. That I care more about pleasure than I do about commitment. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FIVE 52. 61 CONTINUED: DAX (Cont'd) (cutting to the heart of the matter) What do you think is going on between Arandis and me? This puts Worf on the defensive a little. WORF You know what I think. DAX That's right I do. And you know what? You're wrong. (a beat) Did it occur to you to ask me about it? Or even trust, just a little? WORF A Klingon woman would never even give me grounds for suspicion. DAX How would you know? Curzon spent more time around Klingons than you ever did. WORF You may have lived among my people, but you are not a Klingon. I am. DAX Maybe so. But you're not like any other Klingon I've ever met. Dax calms down a little. She wants to make sure Worf knows she's not there just to browbeat him. She's trying to deal with an important issue in their relationship. DAX What happened to you, Worf? You're a paragon of Klingon honor and discipline, but when it comes to the Klingon passion for life, the exuberance, the enjoyment of the moment, you're constantly holding yourself back. Why? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FIVE 53. 61 CONTINUED: (2) Dax has obviously struck a nerve. WORF That's not the issue here. DAX I think it is. Worf grows quiet. Dax is asking a lot of him. These are some of his most private and closely guarded feelings. WORF (simply) I do not wish to lose you, Jadzia. DAX Then talk to me. Please. Worf goes inside himself for a moment, then... WORF (a rhetorical question) You know that from the age of seven I was raised by humans on the farmworld of Gault? Dax nods. WORF It was a sparsely populated world of not more than twenty thousand inhabitants. It often seemed as if everyone knew everyone else. But one thing was for certain... everyone knew me. (a beat) I was the Klingon child. The "uncontrollable" one. I was the biggest, strongest, most fearless child on the entire planet. I fought hard, I played hard, I did as I pleased. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FIVE 54. 61 CONTINUED: (3) DAX What changed? WORF When I was thirteen, I was captain of my school soccer team. We made it to the championships, and I was determined to win. Near the end of the second half, with the score tied, my team got a corner kick. The ball sailed up high. Both I and one of my opponents, a human boy named Mikel, leaped up to head the ball. He had position, but I was determined to score. I remember laughing with excitement as I threw myself at him. This is a difficult memory for Worf. He stops, overcome by emotion. DAX Go on. WORF The next thing I knew, the ball was sailing into their goal. I roared in triumph and turned to Mikel, to gloat, only to find him lying on the grass bleeding. Our heads had collided when we went up for the ball. I didn't even feel the impact, but I'd broken his neck. He died the next day. DAX It was an accident. WORF Which only makes it worse. Compared to Klingons, humans are fragile creatures. I realized at that moment that to live among them I would have to practice... restraint. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FIVE 55. 61 CONTINUED: (4) DAX That must've been difficult for you. WORF At first. But in time, it became part of who I was, who I am. DAX And you're still afraid that if you lose control... Worf looks up at Dax. WORF Someone I care about might get hurt. DAX That explains a lot. (a beat) But you have to realize, there're some things in life you just can't control. And one of them is me. (with affection) But what you can do is trust me. I care about you Worf. And I would never do anything to hurt you. Worf nods. He believes her. And by sharing a little bit of his past with her, he feels he's bound them even closer together. WORF Nor would I do anything to hurt you. DAX (smiles) Who knows, I might have more self- control than you give me credit for. There's a long beat between them. They're just beginning to think there's a chance of reconciliation when... 62 NEW ANGLE The earth shakes. A piece of artwork on a pedestal tips over and crashes to the floor. And outside, the storm gets even worse. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FIVE 55A. 62 CONTINUED: DAX That felt like an earthquake. The earth shakes again. DAX so did that. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FIVE 56. 62 CONTINUED: (2) WORF The Essentialists. And as the earth shakes a third time, they make for the door. CUT TO: 63 INT. FULLERTON'S GUEST CHAMBER - DAY Fullerton ENTERS to find his followers are gathered around the uplink. The earth shakes again. FULLERTON You should see them all run. I think they've finally realized that the party's over. Fullerton turns to his Bolian Aide. FULLERTON Increase the feedback in the tectonic stress regulators. BOLIAN AIDE If I do, there won't be a building left standing in this part of Risa. The earth shakes once more, but the Bolian Aide hasn't touched the controls. BOLIAN AIDE It might be a good idea to head for the spaceport. (another shake) Or at least get out of this room. Fullerton can see that all the Essentialists are getting a bit nervous. FULLERTON Very well. I think we're done here. One of them heads for the door, but as it opens, Worf and Dax ENTER the room, blocking the way out. WORF The uplink. Give it to me. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FIVE 57. 63 CONTINUED: FULLERTON Mister Worf, I suggest you all get off this planet as soon as possible. I have no wish to see you or your friends harmed. DAX (a quiet threat) Give us the uplink or the only person who'll be "harmed" is you. Worf steps in front of Fullerton. The earth shakes. Fullerton realizes that he doesn't have much choice and signals his followers not to resist. Worf takes the uplink and adjusts it. The quaking STOPS. FULLERTON I thought you were one of us. WORF Perhaps I was... for a time. But I believe the Federation will survive the Dominion, the Borg... and even people like you. Worf turns to go, but Fullerton steps in front of him. FULLERTON If you walk out of here now, you'll be turning your back on the Federation. Don't you see, overindulgence, lack of self-control, they'll destroy everything we hold dear. And you'll be responsible. WORF You say we have to return to traditional Federation values? I agree. But one of those values is trust. It is "Essential," we remember that. Worf heads for the door, along with Dax but Fullerton grabs him and spins him around. FULLERTON Don't you walk away from me. Infuriated, Fullerton punches Worf. Worf barely flinches. He smiles, then lifts Fullerton up and tosses him across the room. Fullerton sprawls on the floor. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FIVE 57A. 63 CONTINUED: (2) WORF I'll do as I please. I'm on vacation. Dax and Worf EXIT as the Bolian Aide helps Fullerton to his feet. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FIVE 58. 64 OMITTED 65 EXT. RISA - TEMTIBI LAGOON - DAY It's a few days later. Worf, Dax, Quark, Arandis and Leeta walk on the beach. The the sun has finally come out from behind the clouds. QUARK Figures. The weather improves the day we leave. LEETA I can't wait to get home. (to Arandis, apologetically) Not that I didn't enjoy myself. She turns and leaves. QUARK I'd better go find Doctor Bashir. He brought a horga'hn down to breakfast and that's the last I saw of him. Quark walks off, leaving Dax, Worf and Arandis. ARANDIS I hope the two of you will visit Risa again. WORF I did not think I'd be welcome. ARANDIS You still have a lot to learn about my people. She turns to Dax. They hug. ARANDIS I never got a chance to say good-bye to Curzon Dax. DAX And you're not saying good-bye to me either. I'll be back. ARANDIS (pleased) Risa will be waiting. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... " - REV. 09/23/96 - ACT FIVE 59. 65 CONTINUED: She EXITS. DAX (to Worf) So what do we do now? She means about their relationship. But for a change, Worf does not feel like discussing anything. WORF Now... (looks at the sky) We watch the sun set. Dax smiles. DAX I have a better idea. Let's go for a swim. Worf grimaces. That wouldn't be his activity of choice. But now that he and Dax are getting along again, he's not going to ruin it for them. He reaches up and begins to strip off his uniform. Suddenly he stops -- WORF I don't have a bathing suit. DAX (smiling) I won't tell if you won't. They exchange a smile. CUT TO: 66 EXT. RISA - TEMTIBI LAGOON - DAY (MATTE) As the sun goes down on Risa, we... FADE OUT. END OF ACT FIVE THE END
