SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) A TRANSPORT SHIP pulls up and docks at the station. 2 INT. PROMENADE (as PASSENGERS from the transport ENTER the Promenade through the airlock. There are a few Starfleet officers, various aliens and several Ferengi, including QUARK, who's wearing a smile from ear-to-ear. From off-screen, a harsh voice calls out -- ODO (O.S.) Quark. Quark turns to see ODO, arms crossed, glaring at him. ODO Where's your luggage? QUARK (above reproach) Back at the retrieval rack. ODO Aren't you going to hover over your bags and harass my cargo inspectors? QUARK Not today. I wanted to give your inspectors time to do their job. No doubt you've got them examining every square millimeter of each and every one of my bags. Odo takes this as another round of their ongoing battle. ODO (even more suspicious) You're hiding something. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - TEASER 1A. 2 CONTINUED: QUARK Oh, no I'm not. (grinning widely) But I know you can't take my word for that -- so go ahead. Do what you have to do. Go through my luggage. Search it, scan it, tear it apart -- in fact, why don't you just keep it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - TEASER 2. 2 CONTINUED: (2) And with that smile still plastered on his face, Quark walks away, leaving a perturbed Odo to ponder their encounter. 3 INT. OPS DAX, O'BRIEN, WORF and SUPERNUMERARIES are at their stations. O'Brien checks his console nervously. O'BRIEN I never should have let her go. Not in her condition. WORF Chief... I'm certain Doctor Bashir and Major Kira are taking good care of your wife. DAX And besides, you know there was no way to keep Keiko from going. She's been talking about the botanical mysteries on Torad Five for a long time. You're lucky she agreed to limit the trip to three days. O'BRIEN (shaking his head Three days in the Gamma Quadrant... you know what she wanted to do last week? She wanted to go back to Bajor and rappel down the cliffs of Undalar to get a fungus sample. Rappel -- to get fungus! (at his wits' end) It's as if I have to remind her that she's pregnant. Dax shoots him a look. DAX Yeah... I guess the extra weight, the morning sickness, the mood swings, the medical examinations... they aren't reminders enough. O'BRIEN I have work to do. O'Brien makes himself busy at another console. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - TEASER 3. 4 INT. QUARK'S The place is very busy as Quark ENTERS, maintaining his ebullient disposition. He spots ROM, sitting at the bar, wearing his work outfit -- Bajoran maintenance crew, junior grade. Quark greets him with open arms. QUARK Rom, my brother! It's good to see you. Come, let me pour you a snail juice -- ROM Okay. But only one -- my shift starts in thirty-three minutes. Other customers start to filter in as well; by the end of this scene, the place should be fairly busy. QUARK I'll make it a tall one -- and on the house. We're celebrating. ROM Celebrating? What? QUARK My return from two weeks on Ferenginar. Didn't you miss me? ROM (thinks about it) I suppose. QUARK And I missed you. That's two reasons to celebrate. Quark prepares Rom's drink himself, hands it to Rom. QUARK Enjoy. ROM Thanks. QUARK Just the way you like it? ROM (taking a sip) Perfect. They both sit back... a quiet, happy moment between the brothers. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - TEASER 4. 4 CONTINUED: (2) ROM So, how was your trip? Did you close the vole belly deal? QUARK The what -- oh, yeah. Closed it on the first day. Fifteen percent profit margin. ROM Great. Did you see Moogie? QUARK Mother's fine. She sends her love. Rom smiles, pleased. ROM What else did you do? QUARK Well... let's see... closed the deal. Told you that. Did some shopping... made a pilgrimage to the Great Marketplace... and, oh, yes, I found out -- (directly in Rom's face and at the top of his lungs) -- I'M DYING! 5 WIDER as the now very busy bar falls silent with everyone looking at Quark. After a long beat, Quark looks out at the crowd pleasantly; he's calm again. QUARK what are you all looking at? Haven't you ever seen a dying man before? And on that, we: FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/01/96 - ACT ONE 5. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes) 6 INT. QUARK'S (OPTICAL) As before. A few moments later. The crowd has gone back about their business -- drinking, eating and laughing amongst themselves. ROM You're... dying? QUARK (nodding) I got the results of my annual insurance physical. All the tests came back negative... except one. I have Dorek Syndrome. ROM But that's incurable. QUARK That's right. Which explains the dying part... and why they canceled my policy. ROM But Dorek Syndrome... it's so rare. QUARK (weirdly proud) It strikes only one out of every five million Ferengi. (smiles) I finally beat the odds. ROM (tears in his eyes) How long do you have... before... QUARK According to Doctor Orpax six days... maybe seven. ROM Is he sure? QUARK Of course he's sure -- he's one of the most expensive doctors on Ferenginar. He charges two strips of latinum just to walk into the waiting room. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT ONE 5A. 6 CONTINUED: ROM This is terrible... I don't want you to die, brother. (a beat) Maybe you should get a second opinion. Have Doctor Bashir examine you when he gets back from the Gamma Quadrant. QUARK (dismissive) Bashir... how good can he be? He doesn't even charge. Besides what could a Hew-mon doctor know about Dorek Syndrome? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT ONE 6. 6 CONTINUED: (2) ROM (as it sinks in) You're going to die... QUARK That's right. And you know what that means? We have to settle my accounts. (thinking out loud) That gives me six days to take care of everything... my will... Moogie's pension... I've got to make funeral arrangements... pay off my debts... ROM (worried) That's a lot of debts, Brother. QUARK Yeah, but half are to Hew-mons, Bajorans... a couple of Klingons... ROM (continuing the list) The Tholians, the Dosi, the Romulans, the Cardassians -- QUARK (cuts him off) Forget those. The ones I need to pay off are the Ferengi debts. They're the only ones that really matter. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT ONE 7. 6 CONTINUED: (3) ROM Rule of Acquisition seventeen: "A contract is a contract is a contract. But only between Ferengi." QUARK Exactly. (getting overwhelmed) But you're right... it's still a lot of debt. A silent beat, till Rom gets an idea. ROM You can always sell the desiccated remains of your corpse on the Ferengi Futures Exchange. QUARK Who's going to want to buy a disk of desiccated Quark? I'm nobody... just some bartender with a domineering mother and an idiot brother. ROM That's not true. QUARK Which part? ROM All of it. Except for the mother part. You're more than just a bartender. You're the first Ferengi to make contact with the Dominion. QUARK I won't get any cheers for that. Rom thinks about it a moment. ROM (I know!) You were the Grand Nagus -- QUARK For a week. If I'm lucky, I'll be a footnote in some Ferengi financial almanac. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT ONE 7A-8. 6 CONTINUED: (4) ROM You anticipated the change of administrations here on the station -- QUARK (with contempt) And as a reward, I'm inextricably linked to the Federation. I'm a joke back on Ferenginar. Starfleet's favorite bartender. The Synthehol King. (shudders) What a legacy. ROM You're not a joke here. You're a respected businessman... a pillar of the community... a man with many friends. QUARK Friends? Community? You sound like some sniveling Hew-mon. The only opinions I care about are those of my peers -- Ferengi businessmen. And in their eyes, I'm a second-rate, small-time operator... a loser. (a beat) Two days ago, I thought I had all the time in the world to achieve my dreams... to buy my own moon... marry a few women... maybe even rent some children... but now, it's all over. I'll never be rich... Rom won't let Quark run himself down like this. He leaps to his defense. ROM Stop it, brother! Stop it. You are somebody -- you'll see. You march right over to that com-link and offer your vacuum-desiccated remains for sale on the Futures Exchange. You'll see... bids will come flooding in from all over the Ferengi Alliance. Everyone will want a disk of Quark on their desk. In fact -- there may not be enough of you to meet the demand. Quark looks dubious. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT ONE 9. 6 CONTINUED: (5) QUARK You really believe that? ROM Yes. QUARK You're a liar. But I love you. Quark lets himself be steered over to the monitor. He works the monitor for a moment; Ferengi graphics appear next to a picture of Quark. ROM Just wait... when you see how much your body is worth -- you're going to wish you'd died years ago. Quark pauses, looks at Rom for a beat. ROM (realizing that didn't come out quite right) or something like that... 7 INT. OPS SISKO ENTERS, headed for his office when Dax announces: DAX Something's coming through the wormhole. SISKO Onscreen. 8 ANGLE ON THE VIEWSCREEN (OPTICAL) to see a badly damaged runabout emerge from the wormhole. 9 RESUME WORF (off his console) The Volga. It's been damaged. Doctor Bashir's requesting an emergency transport to the Infirmary. Two patients -- Major Kira and Keiko O'Brien. SISKO Do it. Sisko turns to O'Brien. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT ONE 10. 9 CONTINUED: SISKO Go. And O'Brien is halfway out the door before Sisko completes to the "O." 10 INT. INFIRMARY O'Brien rushes in to find KIRA lying on one of the beds, with a bruise on her forehead, her body covered with a blanket. A NURSE tends to her wound. KIRA Keiko's in surgery -- but she's going to be fine. O'BRIEN And the baby? Kira hesitates, not quite sure how to put this... O'Brien misreads her hesitation, fearing the worst. O'BRIEN Oh, my god... Kira quickly corrects his impression. KIRA No, no, Chief -- the baby's fine. O'BRIEN You sure? He looks towards the surgery room. KIRA Positive. Everything's okay. The baby's just had a... change of address. O'BRIEN What? She removes the blanket and touches her enlarged abdomen. KIRA (smiling) Your son is living here now. And on O'Brien's bewildered face, we: FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 11. ACT TWO FADE IN: 11 INT. WARDROOM - LOUNGE AREA (OPTICAL) O'Brien is sitting in one of the chairs, a little shell- shocked, grappling with the news. BASHIR is explaining what happened. BASHIR Kira almost had us clear of the asteroid field, but the deflectors got overwhelmed. We were side- swiped by a rock the size of this room. A fuel pod exploded and Keiko was thrown against the bulkhead. She had a concussion, broken ribs, internal hemorrhaging -- O'Brien pales a little listening to this list of injuries to his wife. BASHIR I was able to stabilize her -- but the baby's autonomic functions were failing. (a beat) I had to find another womb for the baby, and the only two people available were Major Kira and... me. SISKO I think you made the right choice, Doctor. O'Brien is struggling with all this. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 12. 11 CONTINUED: O'BRIEN But the Major's Bajoran... how can she carry a human child? BASHIR I had to stimulate Kira's estrogen and progesterone production, and administer high doses of tesokine to enable the baby to metabolize Bajoran nutrients. O'Brien is starting to look worse by the moment. Sisko steps in. SISKO But the bottom line is it worked, right? BASHIR Right. O'BRIEN So when do you think Keiko will be strong enough to take the baby back? Bashir hesitates, this a difficult moment for him. BASHIR (taking a breath) Keiko should be up on her feet in a day or two. However... the baby... He trails off, not quite sure how to say this. O'BRIEN What? BASHIR Major Kira will have to carry the baby to term. Sisko gets up, moves to the replicator. SISKO (to replicator) One Alvanian brandy. (beat) Make it three. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 13. 11 CONTINUED: (2) BASHIR You see, Chief... Bajoran women carry their children for less than five months. Because they have such a short gestation period, they vascularize very quickly. Sisko has brought over the brandies, handing one to each man. BASHIR Mother and child form a complex network of interconnecting blood vessels. To "transfer" the baby back to Keiko, I'd have to sever those ties, and that would likely cause a massive internal hemorrhage in Kira and a severe respiratory trauma for the baby. O'BRIEN So what you're telling me is... Major Kira is going to have my baby. Bashir nods. After a beat -- SISKO Should be an interesting few months. They all look at each other, and then, as one, they all down their drinks in a single gulp. 12 INT. QUARK'S QUARTERS (OPTICAL) Quark is watching the monitor. On the screen is the picture of Quark and the Ferengi Futures Exchange Index hieroglyphics we saw earlier. The door CHIMES. QUARK (irritable) What is it? The door OPENS, Rom ENTERS. ROM Hello, Brother. You wanted to see me? QUARK Come here. Rom moves eagerly to the monitor. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 14. 12 CONTINUED: ROM Did you get lots of bids? QUARK I wouldn't say "lots." ROM How many? QUARK (dripping irony) Let me count... ah, one. ROM Oh. Rom looks at the monitor and brightens. ROM Seventeen bars, three strips, and five slips of latinum for the entire collection. It's a generous opening bid. QUARK It's an insultingly low offer and it also happens to be exactly the sum total of your life savings... ROM Oh. What a coincidence. QUARK Stop it. I don't want your charity. ROM It's not charity. I want to have something to remember you by... when you're gone. Quark moves away from the monitor. QUARK I knew this was a mistake... ROM (re: the monitor) But Brother, you've got to give it time. Your body's only been on the Exchange for -- QUARK Oh, forget the bidding. This has all been a mistake... my life... coming here... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 15. 12 CONTINUED: (2) QUARK (Cont'd) ... putting a bar on this Cardassian monstrosity of a station... what was I thinking? (a beat) I should've followed Moogie's advice and stayed home. I could have made a fortune in waste extraction like Uncle Pax. ROM (disgusted) You mean Uncle "Stinky." QUARK You think he cares what he smells like -- he's rich and what's more, he's respected! ROM You're respected, too. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 16. 12 CONTINUED: (3) QUARK (sarcastic) By who... Morn? A few dabo girls? The monitor BEEPS. Rom quickly moves to the monitor. ROM (excited) Brother come here, quick. It's a bid. QUARK A bid? ROM A huge bid. Quark moves over with some skepticism, but his expression changes once he sees the bid. QUARK Five hundred bars of latinum... for the entire set. ROM That's ten thousand strips. QUARK Or one million slips. ROM That sounds even better. QUARK It doesn't say who the bidder is. ROM It's not me. QUARK No kidding. ROM You think it's Moogie? QUARK Maybe she'd buy one disk... but all fifty-two? No... she doesn't like me that much. (thinking) Who could it be. Who could afford to spend five hundred bars of latinum... on me. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 16A. 12 CONTINUED: (4) QUARK (Cont'd) (a sudden idea) Grand Nagus Zek. Rom is startled by that thought. ROM The Nagus? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 17. 12 CONTINUED: (5) QUARK Of course, it makes perfect sense. He's always liked me. ROM He used you when it suited his needs. I don't think it's the same thing. But Quark has convinced himself that the Nagus is his benefactor, and he's not about to let Rom dissuade him. QUARK Don't you see, Rom? He used me because he likes me. He just couldn't admit it in public. So he made an anonymous bid as a gesture of gratitude and appreciation. ROM (thinks about it) That doesn't sound like the Nagus I know. (shrugs) But I suppose it doesn't matter who made the offer. The important thing is this could stimulate further bidding. QUARK Now let's not be greedy, Rom. if we wait the Nagus might change his mind. Quark taps a few keys on the monitor's console. QUARK (lightning fast) Going once, going twice, SOLD! ROM Congratulations, Brother. Quark takes in the magic moment. QUARK It took me all my life, but I'm going to die a winner. Quark smiles -- genuinely happy for the first time in this episode. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 17A. 13 INT. O'BRIENS' QUARTERS - BEDROOM KEIKO is awake, propped up in bed. She looks a little drawn and tired, but clearly on the mend, though she stares into middle-distance with a touch of melancholy. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 18. 13 CONTINUED: Kira ENTERS. She has a big, warm smile for Keiko; she's here to lift Keiko's spirits and reassure her that everything will be all right. KIRA Hi. Keiko musters a smile in return. Kira approaches and sits on a corner of the bed. KIRA How you feeling? KEIKO Like I was hit by a ten ton rock. (rallying herself) Julian says I'll be on my feet tomorrow. How are you? KIRA Fine. (twinkle in her eye) Though I think I've put on a little weight. Keiko smiles. KEIKO You carry it well. And though Keiko is smiling, her eyes go down to stare at Kira's abdomen and there is an undeniable sadness in those eyes. KEIKO You know... what you're doing for me... for us... I don't know how to thank you. Kira takes Keiko's hand in hers. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 19. 13 CONTINUED: (2) Keiko's eyes drift down to stare at her baby in Kira's womb. Kira knows what's on her mind. KIRA Go ahead. Touch it. KEIKO You sure? KIRA It's your baby, Keiko. Keiko reaches out and places her hand on Kira's belly. Her eyes well up, but she's smiling -- it's a strangely sad and happy moment. There's a deep sense of loss but at the same time, there's happiness because the baby is alive and well and it looks like everything is going to be all right. 14 INT. QUARK'S Medium busy. A re-energized Quark is instructing Rom on settling his complicated affairs. Rom is taking notes on a PADD. QUARK ... that'll pay off Moogie, leaving one hundred and ninety-six bars to pay off Uncle Gorad and Cousin Gaila. Is that clear? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 20. 14 CONTINUED: ROM I think so... QUARK Good. Now on to my funeral arrangements. Rom SNIFFLES slightly. ROM That makes me sad, Brother. QUARK Now, now. None of that. My death is nothing to get upset about -- I'm making money on it. From behind the counter, Quark takes out a set of holosuite program rods. QUARK First, I want my eulogy to take place in the holosuite. We'll charge admission. Two slips a head. ROM I don't know about that... QUARK You're right, make it three. I want you to use this program -- it's Doctor Bashir's. ROM (reading the label) Roman chariot races? QUARK (nodding) Trust me, it's spectacular. Big crowds. Lots of cheering. Tell all the women -- especially Dax -- they have to come naked... out of respect. Rom makes a note on his PADD to do so. Bashir ENTERS. BASHIR Quark... I just got an odd message from a Doctor Orpax on Ferenginar. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 21. 14 CONTINUED: (2) BASHIR (Cont'd) He wanted me to tell you: he's very sorry. You don't have Dorek Syndrome. Does that make any sense to you? Quark and Rom are both momentarily stunned. ROM You don't have Dorek Syndrome... QUARK You know what that means, Rom? ROM (very happy) It means you're going to live! QUARK It means I get to sue Doctor Orpax for malpractice. (exhilarated) And I'm going to live! BASHIR Were you sick? QUARK (to Rom) See why I don't go to Hew-mon doctors? He couldn't even tell I was sick. ROM But you weren't sick. QUARK He couldn't tell that either. Bashir heads for the door. BASHIR I don't have time for this. If you want a physical, you know where to find me. Bashir EXITS. ROM Come, Brother. Let's celebrate. QUARK Celebrate? We have work to do! DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 22. 14 CONTINUED: (3) ROM We do? QUARK Rom, you idiot, we just spent seven hours selling off my assets and paying my debts. We have to undo all that. (to business) Now, rescind the debt payments to Moogie, Uncle Gorad and Cousin Gaila. Rom starts frantically working the PADD again. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 23. 15 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) (STOCK) Re-establish. 16 INT. QUARK'S QUARTERS - BEDROOM Quark is asleep. The door CHIMES several times. QUARK I'm coming. I'm coming. Quark drags himself out of bed and heads out to the living room. 17 INT. QUARK'S QUARTERS - LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS Quark emerges as the doorbell continues CHIMING. QUARK Computer. Lights. The lights come up. QUARK (to the door) Come in already. The door opens to reveal BRUNT, the F.C.A. liquidator from "The Bar Association." BRUNT Brunt. F.C.A. Quark is now fully awake. Quark eyes him warily, he knows and dislikes Brunt intensely. Quark fears Brunt, though he tries not to show it. QUARK Don't tell me, this is a surprise audit. BRUNT Not this time. Brunt steps closer to Quark and looks him over, from head to toe. BRUNT I'm here to check on my merchandise. QUARK What are you talking about? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT TWO 24. 17 CONTINUED: BRUNT I'm talking about you. I paid five hundred bars of latinum for your desiccated remains and I'm here to collect. QUARK (worried) You're the anonymous buyer? BRUNT Who did you expect? The Nagus? Quark tries to laugh that off. QUARK The Nagus? Of course not. I'm just a little surprised it was you. I guess you haven't heard the news. BRUNT You mean that you don't have Dorek Syndrome? I know all about it. QUARK But then... I don't understand. What are you doing here? BRUNT I'm here to get what I paid for. The contract called for fifty-two disks of vacuum-desiccated Quark available within six days. I'm here to make sure you deliver the merchandise. Brunt smiles his patently evil smile. And Quark begins to realize his troubles are far from over. FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT THREE 25. ACT THREE FADE IN: 18 INT. QUARK'S QUARTERS - LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS As before. Quark is a little dumbfounded; he thinks Brunt didn't understand him. QUARK Maybe I wasn't clear... I'm not dying. BRUNT Maybe I wasn't clear... I don't care. I want my merchandise. I have a thousand ideas on how to defile your remains... want to hear my favorites? Brunt seems serious, but Quark still can't quite believe it. After a beat, Quark thinks he understands... QUARK Oh, I see. How foolish of me -- I forgot to mention, that on top of your full refund, you'll also be receiving an additional five bars of latinum for your troubles. Brunt says nothing. QUARK Did I say five? I meant ten. (a beat) You drive a hard bargain. Twelve. And that's my final offer. Brunt remains silent. QUARK Well, not my final-final offer... twenty bars. Brunt just grins his quiet malevolent smile. QUARK Look, it's late. You've come a long way... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/02/96 - ACT THREE 26-26A. 18 CONTINUED: QUARK (Cont'd) Why don't we stop this haggling and you just tell me how much you want. BRUNT What I want is fifty-two disks of vacuum-desiccated Quark -- nothing more. Nothing less. QUARK But I'm not going to die just yet! What do you expect me to do -- kill myself? BRUNT Of course not. (off Quark's look of hope) You can have someone do it for you. I recommend strangulation... it leaves the body relatively unmarked for desiccation. Quark is stunned by Brunt's attitude; he finds it incomprehensible. QUARK You can't be serious? BRUNT A contract is a contract -- QUARK -- is a contract. I know that! But you don't collect on contracts under these circumstances -- we're not Klingons! We're businessmen. BRUNT This isn't business, Quark. This is personal. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT THREE 27, 18 CONTINUED: (2) QUARK But... why? What have I ever done to you? BRUNT Done to me? (a beat) And you call your brother an idiot? Nothing you've ever done to me has been more than a minor inconvenience. (a beat) No... protecting your mother from an F.C.A. audit, and secretly settling with your striking employees were merely symptoms of a much more vile and insidious weakness. A weakness that makes me loath you... not for what you've done but for who you are... what you are. QUARK A bartender? BRUNT A philanthropist. QUARK I am not! BRUNT You give your customers credit at the bar... you only take a thirty percent kickback from your employees' tips and -- (most damning) -- you sold food and medicine to Bajoran refugees at cost. QUARK That's not true -- it was just above cost. BRUNT Close enough. It was still a generous, humanitarian gesture. (with disgust) You've gone Starfleet -- you might as well be wearing one of their uniforms. This is Quark's own worst fear: that he's become too soft. Brunt is openly contemptuous of his weakness. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/02/96 - ACT THREE 21A-28. 18 CONTINUED: (4) BRUNT It's people like you that give honest Ferengi businessmen a bad name. Quark is starting to really sweat this; Brunt is hitting him where it hurts. QUARK I can reform. I'll start gouging the customers again. I'll revoke all my employees' vacation time... BRUNT You gave them vacations? QUARK I didn't give them anything they contributed to a central fund which I manage and -- BRUNT You disgust me. Brunt heads for the door. QUARK Look, I understand your anger. You're absolutely right about me... but there must be some accommodation we can make... something other than me killing myself. BRUNT Of course there is. You can break the contract. The thought of breaking the contract had not even occurred to Quark; he finds it appalling. QUARK Me? Break a Ferengi contract? Never. BRUNT Never? I wonder if there's enough Ferengi left in you to stick to that. Part of me hopes you will break it... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT THREE 29. 18 CONTINUED: (6) BRUNT (Cont'd) ... because then -- everything you and your family own on Ferenginar will be confiscated and sold to the lowest bidder... your mother will be forced to live in the streets, begging for scraps of food... and of course, no Ferengi will do business with you, or even talk to you. You'll be cut off from all contact with your own people. QUARK But I like Ferengi. I feel comfortable around them. BRUNT Well we don't feel comfortable around you. You're a disease, Quark, a festering tumor on the lobes of Ferengi society. And it's my job to cut you off. The prospect of being surrounded only by non-Ferengis is a frightening thought to Quark... more frightening than death. Quark sits, depressed. Brunt flashes him one last grin, then EXITS, leaving Quark to ponder his situation. 19 INT. O'BRIENS' QUARTERS Emerging from the bedroom door, Keiko is holding onto O'Brien's arm as they walk toward the couch. Keiko is recuperating well, but she is still a bit delicate. O'BRIEN That's it... one step at a time. As they get a few steps from the sofa -- O'BRIEN We're almost there. Prepare for docking. Thrusters back to half. O'Brien gently turns Keiko slowly, then gently eases her down into a sitting position. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" -RE7V1. 04/08/96 - ACT THREE 30. 19 CONTINUED: O'BRIEN Nice landing, Captain. Let me know when you want to get underway again. KEIKO I think I'll sit here for a week. There's a silence, then she pats her own belly out of habit. KEIKO Did you see Kira today? O'BRIEN (nodding) Saw her in Ops. KEIKO I was thinking of inviting her to dinner. O'BRIEN Good idea. Maybe she could come every night. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT THREE 31. 19 CONTINUED: (2) Keiko sighs with a sad realization. KEIKO Even if she came every night... it wouldn't be enough. O'Brien understands, but there's not much he can offer to change the situation. KEIKO I know I'm being selfish... I should be grateful that my baby is alive and well... but I shouldn't have to make appointments to be with my own child. O'Brien sits next to her and puts his arm around her, comforting her. She leans into him. KEIKO What are we going to do, Miles? O'BRIEN I don't know... Keiko forces a smile. He comforts her, but there's no apparent solution at the moment. 19A INT. KIRA'S QUARTERS (OPTICAL) (FORMERLY SC. 25) Odo is watching Kira looking herself over in a full- length mirror. KIRA So where's this "glow"... this "radiance" pregnant women are suppose to have? All I have is a sudden... weight gain. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT THREE 31A. 19A CONTINUED: ODO It's not that noticeable. KIRA Maybe not now. But just wait. Julian showed me a picture of a human mother just before she gave birth. It looked like she swallowed a runabout. Suddenly, Kira is startled. KIRA Whoa. ODO Are you all right? KIRA I think it... kicked. Odo smiles. She looks momentarily lost at sea. KIRA What do I do? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT THREE 31B. 19A CONTINUED: (2) ODO You don't have to do anything. It's my understanding the child will kick and move periodically... KIRA It did it again. This time, through the fear and confusion comes excitement and pleasure. Kira's on an emotional rollercoaster that she didn't anticipate and she's trying to hang on. KIRA Odo... I'm pregnant. ODO Yes. KIRA I mean I knew I was... but... this is amazing. As the baby "kicks" once again, Kira touches her combadge. KIRA Kira to Keiko O'Brien. The baby's kicking. Can you come? KEIKO'S COM VOICE I'm not supposed to leave my quarters. Julian -- KIRA It's okay, I'll come to you. Kira stands up and immediately GASPS again. It's difficult for her to move around -- much less make it all the way to the O'Briens'. KIRA Oh, what the hell. Kira to Ops. Emergency transport. Beam me directly to the O'Briens' quarters. (to Odo) Don't mention this to the captain. ODO I wasn't even here. Kira DEMATERIALIZES. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT THREE 31C-33. 20 thru OMITTED 21 22 INT. PROMENADE - UPPER LEVEL Quark and Rom descend the spiral staircase as they talk. ROM I know what you're thinking, brother: That you can't break a sacred Ferengi tradition. But the truth is... defying Ferengi tradition isn't so bad. I did it. I formed a union. Everyone said I was crazy... that no Ferengi would have anything to do with me. QUARK (so what) They didn't want anything to do with you before you formed the union... At this point, they've walked into 23 INT. GARAK'S SHOP GARAK is finishing attending to his only customer, MORN. GARAK -- try on the trousers first. I've added extra padding to the seat -- you should find swiveling on a barstool much more comfortable. Morn disappears into the changing room as Quark steps up to Garak. GARAK I'm afraid your pants won't be ready 'til next week, Quark. QUARK That's not why I'm here. GARAK Oh? Then what can I do for you? QUARK I want to hire you. Not as a tailor... as an assassin. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT THREE 34. 23 CONTINUED: GARAK I don't know what you're talking about. QUARK Oh, yes you do. You weren't always a tailor. GARAK You're right. I used to be a gardener. Now, if you have something you want weeded, you let me know. QUARK Not something... someone. Garak moves away, but the idea has Rom excited. ROM You're going to have Brunt killed? I didn't think you had it in you, brother. What a bold, uncompromising move. QUARK Would you be quiet? Quark chases down Garak. QUARK I don't want you to kill Brunt... I want you to kill me. Garak looks at Quark intently. And on Quark's dead- serious expression, we: FADE OUT. END OF ACT THREE DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FOUR 35. ACT FOUR FADE IN: 24 INT. GARAK'S SHOP - CONTINUOUS Moments later. Garak stares at Quark for a moment. GARAK You want me to kill you? Well, that's different... QUARK Something swift and painless, preferably bloodless, though I imagine that's not always possible. ROM Wait a minute -- you can't do this. I thought you were going to break the contract. QUARK What are the key words there? "You thought"... ROM But brother -- QUARK Don't "brother" me, Rom. I'm not like you... or Nog or Moogie or the rest of our pathetic family. I'm a Ferengi businessman and I made a contract. And a contract is a -- ROM Don't quote the Rules of Acquisition to me. This is your life we're talking about. QUARK That's right -- my life. And what's the most important thing in my life? GARAK Business? QUARK (nodding) That's who I am... that's what I do. I'm a businessman. And more than that, I'm a Ferengi businessman. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 -- ACT FOUR 36. 24 CONTINUED: QUARK (Cont'd) Do you know what that means? it means that I'm not exploiting and cheating people at random. I'm doing it according to a specific set of rules. The Rules of Acquisition. And I won't disregard them when I find them inconvenient. ROM Inconvenient? Brother, you're going to die. QUARK Yes. And when I arrive at the gates of the Divine Treasury, the Registrar will accept my bribe and usher me inside... and you know why? Because I died exactly the way I lived -- as a Ferengi. Rom is speechless. Quark has made his stand and there doesn't seem to be any way to talk him out of it. QUARK Garak. Let's talk about death... 24A INT. O'BRIENS' QUARTERS Kira's on the couch, smiling. Keiko and O'Brien are nearby. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FOUR 37. 24A CONTINUED: KIRA He's kicking so hard, you think he's all right? KEIKO (nodding) It's a good sign. I thought Molly was going to kick her way out of me. Kira shifts a bit on the couch, trying to make herself comfortable. O'BRIEN The lower back, right? Kira nods. O'Brien heads for the bedroom. O'BRIEN Hold on -- I've got just the thing. He EXITS, leaving the two women. KEIKO It was very thoughtful of you to share this with us. Thanks, major. KIRA Please, Nerys. KEIKO (nodding) Any morning sickness? KIRA What's that? KEIKO Well, I don't know how it is for Bajorans... but human mothers typically wake up feeling nauseous. KIRA It doesn't work that way with Bajorans... typically, we start sneezing. Uncontrollably. But this is a human child... so I don't know what to expect. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FOUR 36. 24A CONTINUED: (2) O'Brien REENTERS carrying a strangely shaped pillow. He wedges it behind Kira's back. O'BRIEN Better? KIRA Much. Molly steps up to Keiko. MOLLY Mommy, I'm hungry. O'BRIEN It is about that time. I'll get dinner started. KIRA And I should get back to my quarters. KEIKO Why? Have dinner with us. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FOUR 38A. 24A CONTINUED: (3) KIRA I don't want to impose. KEIKO Nerys. You're having our child you're family now. O'Brien and Keiko exchange a look -- is now the time to tell her? O'BRIEN That's right. In fact, Keiko and I have been talking about something... we have an idea we'd like you to consider. KEIKO It's just an idea... we don't want to pressure you. KIRA I understand. What is it? The O'Briens exchange a final look, still internally debating how to put this. On Kira's curious expression, we go to -- 25 OMITTED DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FOUR 39. 26 INT. HOLOSUITE/QUARKIS BAR (OPTICAL) The bar is empty. Quark is sitting at a table, eating a plate of food which he is enjoying as if it where his last meal. The figure of Garak approaches from behind. Quark doesn't hear him or sense him in any way. Garak slides his arm to his throat, and with a sharp, quick move of his other hand, SNAPS Quark's neck. Quark keels over into his meal, stone dead. GAPAK How's that? WIDEN to include the real Quark, who's been standing to one side, watching. QUARK Awful. Did you hear that sound of bone snapping? I don't want that to be the last thing I hear. GARAK, It wasn't that loud... QUARK You don't have these ears. Snapping vertebrae is out. GARAK We're running out of options, Quark. You don't want to be vaporized because you need a body... the disruptor ruined your clothes... a knife was too savage... the nerve gas smelled bad... hanging took too long, and poison... what was wrong with poison? QUARK It won't work. If I know my food is poisoned, I won't eat it. Quark grimaces looking at the dead body. QUARK Can you get rid of that? The sight of it makes me sick. GARAK Computer. Remove corpse. The dead Quark disappears. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FOUR 40. 26 CONTINUED: GARAK For a man who wants to kill himself, you seem strangely determined to live. QUARK I am going to die -- don't you worry about that. I just want to find the right way. I don't want to see it coming... or hear it... or smell it... or feel it. I just want to go on with my life until -- (snaps fingers) -- I'm dead. GARAK You want to be surprised. QUARK Exactly. I want to wake up in the Divine Treasury and have no idea how I got there. GARAK I see. Perhaps that can be arranged. QUARK Really, how? GARAK If I tell you, it won't be much of a surprise. Will it? QUARK That's true. All right. I leave it up to you. Garak gives Quark his most deadly look. GARAK You have my word... you'll never know what hit you. Garak holds his chilling stare for another beat, then EXITS. We HOLD ON Quark as he realizes he's signed his own death warrant. QUARK Computer. End program. The holosuite reality DISAPPEARS all around Quark. 27 INT. CORRIDOR Quark ENTERS from the turbolift. The corridor is empty. Now Quark can't help but look for Garak in every shadow. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FOUR 41. 27 CONTINUED: Quark walks briskly down the corridor glancing over his shoulder several times. Finally, he arrives at his quarters and goes inside. 28 INT. QUARK'S QUARTERS - CONTINUOUS Quark locks the door behind him. He's scared and a little out of breath. A sudden thought panics him and he whirls around the room. QUARK Computer -- lights. Lights come up. There's no one there. Quark slows his breathing with relief. He moves to his bedroom. 29 INT. QUARK'S QUARTERS - BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS Quark looks inside. QUARK Garak, if you're here... I'm not going to be surprised. There's no answer. Quark sits down on the bed. Takes a deep breath, and lies back. As soon as his head hits the pillow, we HARD CUT TO -- 30 INT. DIVINE TREASURY - WAITING ROOM Gaudy doesn't begin to describe this place. It's a latinum-covered nightmare. A few chairs, a single, ornate door with a large Ferengi sign over it. A few pieces of Ferengi sculpture. Everything is gold and everything is cheap. The latinum is peeling off the wall in a few places. Quark is standing in the middle of the room, looking around, bewildered. QUARK Where am I? Then seeing the sign over the door. QUARK (reading) "Please have your profit and loss statements ready for inspection before entering the... Divine Treasury." (a beat) I'm dead. Garak... you're good. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FOUR 42. 30 CONTINUED: And on his face of shock, we: FADE OUT. END OF ACT FOUR DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 43. ACT FIVE FADE IN: 31 INT. DIVINE TREASURY - WAITING ROOM - CONTINUOUS Moments later. Quark looks around the room, coming to grips with his situation. QUARK I'm really dead... The ornate double doors slowly swing open, letting in a blaze of golden light too bright to look at directly. A CRESCENDO of Ferengi choir VOICES herald the arrival of a FIGURE stepping out of the light. This is GINT, a stooped, ancient Ferengi, and the First Grand Nagus. He bears the staff and robes of a Nagus, but looks astonishingly like a very, very old Rom. Quark throws himself on the ground, cowering before the spectral Nagus. The doors CLOSE, shutting off the LIGHT and MUSIC. GINT You're not just dead, Quark... you're an idiot. Quark shoots up a look at the very sound of Gint's voice. It sounds strangely familiar to him. QUARK Who are you? GINT I am Gint. The First Grand Nagus. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 44. 31 CONTINUED: QUARK You look like... like my brother, Rom. GINT That's because this is a dream, you imbecile. Quark starts to get up, a sudden realization on his face. Quark stands, looks around. QUARK So, I'm not dead... GINT What a clever boy... always thinking. QUARK I'm asleep. That explains why this place looks so tacky. I mean... (gestures around) The Divine Treasury? Please. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 45. 31 CONTINUED: (2) GINT Don't blame me for your limited imagination. Now, I'll make it simple. You have to break the contract with Brunt. QUARK You gotta be joking. You're Gint. You wrote the Rules of Acquisition. The sacred precepts upon which all Ferengi society is based. You can't really expect me to break them. GINT Why not? They're just rules... they're written in a book, not carved in stone. And even if they were in stone, so what? A bunch of us just made them up. QUARK Are you saying they don't matter? GINT Of course they matter. That's why they're a best-seller... but we're talking about your life here. The Rules are nothing but guideposts, suggestions... QUARK Then why call them Rules? GINT Would you buy a book called "Suggestions of Acquisition"? Doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it? QUARK You mean it was a marketing ploy? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 46. 31 CONTINUED: (3) GINT A brilliant one... Rule of Acquisition two hundred thirty- nine: "Never be afraid to mislabel a product." This is all difficult for Quark to accept. QUARK I've built my entire life around these rules. How can I just walk away from them? GINT Because I'm telling you to. QUARK But you can't do that -- you're not Gint... this is just a dream. GINT Exactly. And I wouldn't be here if you didn't want to break the Rules. You just need someone's permission. So I'm giving it to you. Quark is struggling with all this; now trying to rationalize... QUARK (more to himself) I suppose if First Nagus Gint came to me in a vision, and told me to break the Rules... that would be all right. BRUNT (O.S.) Hold it right there. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 46A. 31 CONTINUED: (4) Quark turns to see Brunt, sitting in one of the chairs. BRUNT Brunt... F.C.A. QUARK What are you doing here? This is a private vision. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 47. 31 CONTINUED: (5) BRUNT I'm here to remind you of the consequences of disregarding the Rules. Poverty, destitution, exile... QUARK I know, I know. But look -- Gint himself has come to me in a vision. He's telling me to break the contract. BRUNT That is not Gint. Gint was a lot taller. Gint straightens up a little, slightly insulted. BRUNT (to Quark) Listen to that fraud and you'll regret it for the rest of your miserable life. Gint lifts his staff with menace. GINT (to Quark, re: Brunt) I say we kill him, right now. BRUNT This is a dream. You can't kill me. (standing up and moving over to Quark, menacingly) However, people have been known to die in their sleep. Brunt advances against Quark, who backs away and looks toward Gint for help. QUARK Come on Rom... Gint... whatever your name is -- help me! GINT (sorry) He's got a point, Quark. It's a dream... I can't really do anything. Quark is now backed up against the wall. Brunt grabs Quark by the neck and starts CHOKING him. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 48. 31 CONTINUED: (6) GINT But if you want to live -- 32 CLOSE ON QUARK as Brunt tries squeezing the life out of him. GINT (O.S.) Break the contract... it's your only hope. MATCH CUT: 33 INT. QUARK'S QUARTERS - BEDROOM CLOSE ON QUARK as he jolts himself awake -- PANTING -- his own hands at his throat. He looks at them, horrified, letting out a SCREAM. Then realizing he's awoken from the dream... QUARK I'm alive... But the joy of the moment quickly vanishes as the reality of his situation returns. He has to make a decision. He lies there, catching his breath. 34 INT. QUARK'S Brunt is sitting at a table, lasciviously chatting with a dabo girl. Quark ENTERS, carrying a PADD, and steps up to Brunt's table. BRUNT (to Dabo girl) I find it surprising that someone with such long, slender and nimble fingers has never practiced oo-mox. Quark waves away the dabo girl. She EXITS. Brunt looks up at Quark expectantly. BRUNT Come to beg for your life? Quark doesn't answer; he simply tosses the PADD onto the table in front of Brunt. BRUNT What is this? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 49. 34 CONTINUED: QUARK I'm returning your five hundred bars of latinum. Plus interest. BRUNT I told you I wasn't interested in a refund. QUARK I know. I'm breaking the contract. Brunt smiles and leans back. Victory is always his. BRUNT I knew it. You're just like the rest of your family... weak-lobed degenerates. Another loser in a long line of failed Ferengis. QUARK (cutting him off) Look, I've broken the contract so do your job -- take my assets, revoke my Ferengi business license... do whatever you have to do, then get out. And if I ever see you walk into my bar again... Brunt stands up, staring Quark down. BRUNT Yes? QUARK You won't walk out. The two men stare at each other, neither showing any signs of intimidation. Brunt finally smiles and turns to address the entire bar. BRUNT Your attention, please. Then, marching through the crowd -- BRUNT Brunt... F.C.A. As of this moment, no further Ferengi commerce may be conducted in this bar... Brunt slaps the F.C.A. insignia on the wall near the front door. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 50. 34 CONTINUED: (2) BRUNT ... no Ferengi may be employed in this bar... no Ferengi may eat or drink in this bar... and no Ferengi may do business with -- (pointing an accusatory finger) -- that man. Everyone looks at Quark, who is resigned to his fate. Quark nods to the waiters, giving them permission to leave. The waiters put down their trays and file out the door. BRUNT The confiscation of assets will begin immediately. QUARK Ladies and gentlemen, the bar is closed until further notice. Thank you for your patronage... Quark sits down and watches impassively as all his customers leave. Brunt gives Quark one final smile of victory, then heads out the door. 35 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) (STOCK) Re-establishing. 36 INT. O'BRIENS' QUARTERS CLOSE ON the door as it opens to reveal Kira, carrying a single suitcase. She ENTERS. O'Brien steps up to Kira. In the b.g. Keiko sits on the couch watching Molly play with a toy. O'BRIEN I'll take that, maj-- Nerys. (re: the single bag) Is this it? KIRA I travel light. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 51. 36 CONTINUED: KEIKO Would you like to see your room? KIRA Sure. They lead her to a bedroom door. 37 INT. O'BRIENS' QUARTERS - KIRA'S NEW BEDROOM The O'Briens have decorated the room with flowers and have installed a Bajoran shrine in one corner. Kira walks in and smiles at the thoughtfulness of the shrine. There's a slight, awkward moment which Keiko breaks by stepping up to Kira and hugging her. KEIKO Welcome to your new home. KIRA At least until the baby's born. O'Brien smiles in support and agreement. Molly comes in and goes to Kira. MOLLY Are you my aunt? KIRA (looking at the O'Briens for help) Well... Keiko and O'Brien nod and smile. O'BRIEN Sounds right to me. KIRA (then nodding, to Molly) Aunt Nerys. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 52. 37 CONTINUED: Molly is fine with that. MOLLY (to Kira) Aunt Nerys, can I play in your room? KIRA Any time. And as Molly puts her toys down on the floor, Kira settles in with her new family. 38 INT. QUARK'S Quark is sitting on the only chair remaining in the otherwise empty and stripped bar. Brunt's men have taken all the barware, decorations, gaming tables, chairs, stools, etc. There are F.C.A. seals on the walls of the bar and whatever has yet to be taken away. Quark seems resigned to his destitute fate as Rom ENTERS. ROM How are you, Brother? QUARK (matter of fact) How am I? I'm broke. Ruined. Destitute. A pariah. (a beat) How are things with you? ROM Not bad. QUARK Glad to hear it. Rom looks around the room. ROM They took everything? QUARK Including this shirt. I'm supposed to send it to Brunt in the morning. ROM Don't worry. I have some old clothes I was going to throw out. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 53. 38 CONTINUED: QUARK I'd rather be naked. ROM Okay. (a beat) Brother... The way you stood up to Brunt... well, I want you to know that I'm very proud of you. QUARK Oh. Well, then I guess throwing my entire life away was worth it. ROM I wouldn't go that far. (a beat) So, what are you going to do now? QUARK Well, Rom... I've been thinking Long and hard. And you know what? (a beat) I don't have a clue. Rom nods. A long silence that's not broken until Bashir ENTERS, carrying a case of bottles. BASHIR Quark, where do you want this? QUARK What is it? BASHIR A case of Alvanian brandy. Bashir sets it on the bar. BASHIR A patient sent it to me as payment. But I can't accept it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 54. 38 CONTINUED: (2) QUARK Nice try, Doctor. But I don't want your charity. BASHIR It's not charity. I find this undrinkable. Now do you want it or should I dump it? DAX (O.S.) Quark. Quark turns to see Dax ENTER with a box of glassware. DAX My sister sent me these. I thought you might want them. They're really ugly. Rom picks up a glass. ROM They're not as ugly as the old ones, but they're pretty bad. QUARK This is all very amusing, but I can't start a bar with a case of bad brandy and a set of ugly glasses. SISKO (O.S.) Quark! Quark looks to see Sisko approaching. QUARK Yes, captain? SISKO We're doing some structural repair work on level two of the Habitat Ring. We need a place to store some extra furniture for the next few months and it looks like you have the room... Odo is directing a few N.D.s who are carrying lamps, chairs, tables, etc. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 55. 38 CONTINUED: (3) ODO Where would you like this, Captain? SISKO There are three levels, Constable. Use them all. ODO Understood. Odo leads his crews into Quark's and they start moving furniture into the bar. Quark has to step out of the way of the incoming furniture, then puts his foot down: QUARK Captain -- you can't do this! Everyone stops, turns to look at Quark. Quark looks around at all the faces of his friends that have come to help him in his time of need... he reconsiders his position. QUARK Not without paying a storage fee. (a beat) A minimal storage fee. Practically nothing. SISKO (smiles) Send me a bill. Quark's dignity restored, he takes charge: QUARK All right. (to Odo) Well, don't just stand there, Odo. Move it all in. And as everyone continues to move in the furniture, Bashir and Dax start unpacking the liquor and glasses. 39 NEW ANGLE to see Rom approach Quark. In the b.g., Morn ENTERS, carrying in a barstool; he places the stool at his "usual spot," and then sits on it. The steady stream of people bringing in furniture, lamps, stools, etc. ROM (proud and pleased) Look at them, brother. And you thought you had no assets. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Body Parts" - REV. 04/08/96 - ACT FIVE 56. 39 CONTINUED: QUARK Sisko... Bashir... Dax... Morn... they're my assets? ROM To name a few. Quark looks at his brother. Maybe he's right... maybe these people -- the Federation Hew-mons, Bajorans and Trills are what he can count on. QUARK I guess you're right... And to Quark, that thought has horrifying implications. QUARK I need a drink. And on Quark pouring himself a tall one, we: FADE OUT. END OF ACT FIVE THE END
