SECURITY OFFICE where ODO is working on his COMPUTER. After a moment he finishes what he's doing and selects two PADDS. ODO Computer, download this week's Criminal Activity Reports to PADDS J Six and Eight. We hear the SOUND of the Computer working, then... COMPUTER VOICE Files downloaded. Odo glances at one of the PADDS to make sure, and when he's satisfied: ODO Time? COMPUTER VOICE Oh-seven fifty-nine hours. Odo is expecting Kira for their weekly meeting in which they go over the Criminal Activity Reports. He looks forward to this time with her, and does everything he can to make sure that she enjoys it, too. Odo places a PADD on the front edge of his desk, square with the corner, facing away from him, then stands and moves around to the front of his desk. He pulls a CHAIR over so that it faces the desk, positions it just so. He then crosses to the replicator. ODO One Raktajino, extra hot... two measures of kava. We hear the SOUND of the replicator working, and then Odo turns back to his desk with the raktajino in hand. He sets it down next to the PADD, being careful to make sure that the cup's handle is facing the chair. He studies the set-up for a beat, and when satisfied, crosses back behind his desk and takes a seat. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - TEASER 2. 1 CONTINUED: He picks up his PADD so as to look busy, and a beat later, KIRA ENTERS from the Promenade and greets Odo with a smile. KIRA Good morning. ODO Major. She slides into the seat Odo prepared for her, picks up the raktajino and takes a sip. KIRA Mmm... (picking up PADD) So... how many have we got? ODO Sixteen items. KIRA (wry) The station's criminal element has been busy this week. ODO Nothing out of the ordinary; three petty thefts, two incidents of disorderly conduct, one assault... Kira has been reading along as Odo ticks them off, and her attention is caught by a familiar name. KIRA Ijarna's wife hit him again? Why does he stay with her? ODO (see for yourself) Skip to item twelve. Kira skims the list until she finds it. KIRA Public lewdness. ODO The same night Ijarna reported the assault, I caught him and his wife... (you know) ... behind the information kiosk on the second level. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - TEASER 3. 1 CONTINUED: (2) KIRA (smiling) That answers my question... Kira continues reading, and we might catch Odo watching her over the top edge of his PADD. Truth is, he knows these reports by heart, and only goes through the formality of reviewing them with Kira as an excuse to spend time with her. KIRA What about item seven? ODO One of my deputies found Ojuy Gel scrawling political graffiti on a wall in section four. KIRA He's always riled up about something, isn't he? what was it this time? ODO He was protesting First Minister Shakaar's upcoming visit to the station. KIRA (nodding) He's been handing out leaflets saying that Shakaar should drop the petition to join the Federation. ODO Leaflets are one thing, vandalism is quite another. Ojuy spent a night in a holding cell for his trouble, and I understand the Arbiter sentenced him to three weeks of community service... (with satisfaction) -- on Sanitation Duty. Kira can't help but smile at Odo's evident pleasure in this fact. KIRA Just make sure he scrubs that wall clean before Shakaar gets here. I don't want him to see it. Odo nods. Just then QUARK ENTERS, looking harried and maybe a little tired. QUARK I'd like to file a complaint. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - TEASER 4. 1 CONTINUED: (3) ODO Not now, Quark. QUARK (accusing) A noise complaint. (pointing at Odo) Against you. Odo is not about to let Quark interfere with his time with Kira. ODO We're conducting station business. QUARK (to Kira) My quarters are right below his. You wouldn't believe the racket he makes. ODO Quark. QUARK Do you know what it's like to hear someone practice shape-shifting? Last night, it sounded like a Takaran wildebeest was tromping around up there. ODO That was for all of five minutes. Once you complained, I took the form of a Rafalian mouse. QUARK Yeah, little tiny feet skittering across the floor... (skin crawling) back and forth, back and forth... KIRA You could hear that? Quark points to both of his ears simultaneously. QUARK (what do you think?) Hello... ? (beat) Sometimes I can even hear him... (with a shudder) -- oozing around. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - TEASER 5. 1 CONTINUED: (5) KIRA Maybe you should change quarters. QUARK Maybe he should have a little more consideration. Shape-shifting in the middle of the night, there ought to be a regulation against it. ODO Come back in half an hour, I'll be happy to take your complaint then. QUARK Oh, I'll be back. You can count on that. And with that, Quark turns and EXITS. Kira and Odo watch him go, then turn to look at each other... KIRA It's just Quark's luck that you'd be assigned quarters right above his... A beat, then... ODO Luck had nothing to do with it... Kira iooks at him for a moment, and finally a faint smile traces itself on his features. As she realizes what he means and breaks into a grin... 2 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (STOCK OPTICAL) as a Bajoran transport (or some other stock vessel) approaches the station. 3 INT. AIRLOCK CORRIDOR where SISKO, Kira, O'BRIEN and BASHIR are waiting for Shakaar's arrival. All are in DRESS UNIFORM. O'Brien leans over and grumbles something to BASHIR. O'BRIEN (sotto) I don't see why Captain Sisko insisted I had to be here. I'm not a senior officer. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - TEASER 6. 3 CONTINUED: BASHIR Maybe he just wanted to see you in your dress uniform. It does show off your figure. O'BRIEN Why, thank you. DAX hurries up, still straightening her uniform, and moves to join the group. Sisko decides to give her a bit of a hard time, though it's all in good fun. SISKO Good of you to make it, old man. Shakaar's transport just docked. DAX Sorry. There were so many people on the Promenade it was hard to get through. Kira turns to Sisko, speaks in a low voice. KIRA I hope Shakaar's gotten better at talking in front of groups. He used to mumble his way through mission briefings; everyone in our resistance cell had to learn to lip read. Sisko smiles at this... just then, SHAKAAR, his Adjutant, SARISH REZ, and TWO SECURITY GUARDS begin to emerge from the airlock. Despite his new position, Shakaar has maintained an unpretentious style of dress and a down-to-earth manner. Still, he knows that pomp and ceremony can be important, and knows how to handle himself on these occasions. SISKO Welcome to Deep Space Nine, minister. SHAKAAR Thank you, Captain. I've been looking forward to visiting the station... and meeting the Emissary. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - TEASER 7. 3 CONTINUED: (2) Sisko smiles a slightly uncomfortable acknowledgement. SISKO (gesturing) This is part of my senior staff: Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax, Chief of Operations Miles O'Brien, Doctor BASHIR, and, of course, you know my first officer, Major Kira. Shakaar breaks into a grin when he sees her. SHAKAAR Nerys... KIRA It's good to see you, Edon... Though the two old friends have much more to say to each other, this is neither the time or the place. SHAKAAR (wry) I guess I should introduce my senior staff... (gesturing) Here he is. Sarish smiles at his boss's humor, introduces himself to SARISH Sarish Rez, the first minister's adjutant. Sisko nods a greeting. SISKO A pleasure. (indicating) This way. There's quite a crowd waiting for you on the Promenade. Shakaar tries not to show his discomfort. SHAKAAR (ironic) Can't wait... As they move off, Dax holds Kira back for a moment... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - TEASER 7A. 3 CONTINUED: (3) DAX Why didn't you tell me? KIRA What? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - TEASER 8. 3 CONTINUED: (4) DAX That he's so good looking. Dax flashes Kira a mischievous grin, and Kira seems to almost blush at Dax's comment. As they move off... 4 INT. AIRLOCK CORRIDOR that exits onto the Promenade. TWO GUARDS frame the doorway, through which we can make out part of the CROWD that fills the Promenade. The SOUND of the waiting throng bleeds in through the door. Sisko and Kira are standing with Sarish and Shakaar, who looks a little nervous. SISKO The guards will escort you to the podium whenever you're ready. Sarish pulls Shakaar aside for a last-minute reminder. SARISH Don't forget to mention the transit subsidies you just allocated. Tell them they can expect the price of transport to Bajor to start dropping within a few months. Shakaar nods an acknowledgement. SARISH And remember... (enunciating) -- enunciate. Shakaar smiles as if to say he'll try, then moves toward the doorway. KIRA Good luck. SHAKAAR Let's go. Shakaar and the Guards EXIT, and when the crowd catches sight of him, it erupts into a welcoming ROAR... Just then, Sisko's combadge beeps. ODO'S COM VOICE Odo to Captain Sisko. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - TEASER 9. 4 CONTINUED: SISKO Go ahead, Constable. INTERCUT WITH: 5 INT. SECURITY OFFICE where Odo is standing just inside the doors, a grim- looking deputy nearby. The view to the Promenade is blocked by the bodies of those standing outside. ODO I just received a disturbing communication. I have reason to believe that someone is planning to assassinate First Minister Shakaar. Sisko reacts, turns to look toward the doorway through which Shakaar disappeared... off his grim features we... FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 10. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes) 6 INT. CAPTAIN'S OFFICE Sisko, Odo, Kira and Sarish have met to discuss the threat to Shakaar, and as we cut in, it's clear that Odo's better-safe-than-sorry philosophy has him at odds with Sarish. Sisko and Kira are still in dress uniform. ODO (to Sarish) As far as I'm concerned we should've gotten the First Minister off that podium as soon as we received the information. SARISH If Shakaar canceled his public appearances every time someone threatened his life, he'd never leave his office. ODO We're not talking about some disgruntled shopkeeper who writes a letter threatening Shakaar for raising taxes, we're talking about a Cardassian extremist group that's already succeeded in assassinating two Bajoran officials. SARISH I know all about "The True Way" and what they're capable of. ODO My sources in the Cardassian Civilian Government believe "The True Way" already has an operative in place aboard the station. I suggest you cancel the First Minister's conference and reschedule it at another location. SARISH Absolutely not. Nothing is going to keep Shakaar from meeting with those Delegates tomorrow. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 11. 6 CONTINUED: SARISH (Cont'd) Bajor's effort to join the Federation hinges on what happens over the next few days. SISKO Shouldn't the decision be up to the First Minister? SARISH It will be. But I already know what he's going to say. KIRA So do I. Shakaar knows better than anyone that you can't capitulate to terrorists. He used to be one, and the day the Cardassians started negotiating with him was the day he knew they'd been beaten. (beat) He'll stay. SISKO I suppose I'd do the same thing if I were in his position. (turning to Odo) Constable, I want station security stepped up for the duration of Shakaar's visit. Odo accepts this without further argument. ODO (nodding) The First Minister will have round- the-clock protection. I'd like to deploy Starfleet Security Personnel in addition to my own deputies. SISKO Of course. (considers) Commander Eddington is on leave... I'll ask Mister Worf to head up Starfleet Security while he's gone. Off Odo's nod of acknowledgement... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 11A. 6A INT. SECURITY OFFICE where Odo and WORF are studying a schematic of the station and talking about security matters. ODO I've cleared the rooms above, below and to both sides of the First Minister's quarters. WORF I would recommend clearing that entire section of the Habitat Ring. ODO I'm afraid that isn't feasible; there are over twelve hundred people living there. Worf doesn't like it, but he sees Odo's point. WORF Providing security was difficult enough aboard the Enterprise. It appears to be next to impossible on this station. ODO It's not easy. WORF I prefer a more... orderly environment. This gets Odo's attention, and he studies Worf for a moment. ODO We have that in common. My people have an innate need for order. WORF How do you tolerate living here? ODO I make order where I can. For one thing, I have a daily routine, and I follow it unwaveringly. The shopkeepers on the Promenade joke that they can set their clocks by me. WORF Unfortunately, I have found it difficult to establish a routine here. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 11B. 6A CONTINUED: Odo goes on to offer another suggestion. ODO There are other ways to create order in your life. Your quarters, for example. Everything in mine has its specific place. And it's all arranged just so. Worf's eyes go wide as he realizes they have this in common. WORF Yes... mine, too. Even with my eyes closed, I would still know where everything was. ODO Exactly. WORF I couldn't tolerate it any other way. ODO And I'll tell you what else to do. Make sure everyone knows that they can't just "drop by" your quarters to say hello. Worf nods thoughtfully. ODO If someone does, whatever happens, don't make them feel welcome. They're co-conspirators now, it's them against the forces of chaos. WORF Of course not. That would invite subsequent visits. ODO Precisely. WORF So far, the only person who has a tendency to "drop by" is Chief O'Brien. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 6A CONTINUED: (2) ODO That's probably because he knows you from the Enterprise. WORF (thoughtful) Perhaps if I am more inhospitable, he will stop. ODO (I hope so) Good luck. A moment as the two men privately consider the difficulties of life on the station... ODO Well... I'd better get down to the First Minister's quarters. Worf acknowledges with a nod, and Odo takes his leave off Worf's features as he contemplates putting Odo's advice into action... 6B EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Re-establishing. 7 OMITTED DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 13. 8 INT. HABITAT RING CORRIDOR A GUARD is posted at an intersection. After a beat Odo passes by and they exchange a nod. ODO (taps combadge) Odo to Worf. INTERCUT WITH: 9 INT. SECURITY OFFICE where WORF is at work. A Security N.D. mans a side panel. WORF Go ahead. ODO The guards are in position. The corridors between Shakaar's quarters and the wardroom have been cleared. Odo rounds a corner and approaches the door to Shakaar's quarters, where two guards are posted. WORF Acknowledged. ODO The First Minister is scheduled to leave for the reception in half an hour. WORF The wardroom will be scanned and secured well before then. END INTERCUT ON: 10 INT. HABITAT RING CORRIDOR where Odo, is standing near the door to Shakaar's quarters with the two guards. The door OPENS and Shakaar and Sarish ENTER. SHAKAAR Ah, you must be Odo. ODO (a greeting) First Minister... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95.- ACT ONE 14. 10 CONTINUED: SHAKAAR I was hoping I'd get to meet you. I just wish it wasn't under these circumstances. Odo nods to acknowledge the sentiment. SHAKAAR We're ready to go. ODO The reception doesn't start for another -- DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 15. 10 CONTINUED: (2) SHAKAAR I know, but I'd like to stop by the Promenade and visit the Temple first. ODO (to Sarish) Why wasn't I told about this? SARISH I didn't know myself until a moment ago. SHAKAAR Is there a problem? ODO I would have posted extra security on the Promenade. SHAKAAR We'll just slip in, I'll stay for a few minutes, and we'll slip out. ODO With all due respect, now that you're First Minister, you can't "slip" in or out of bed without people noticing. SHAKAAR Maybe not... but that doesn't mean I'm going to stay in bed all day... And with that, Shakaar heads off down the corridor. Odo follows, signaling to a guard down the corridor to take the lead. ODO (hits combadge) Odo to Worf, there's been a change of plans... Off Odo's stern features... 11 INT. PROMENADE as Odo, Shakaar, Sarish, and Three Guards make their way toward the Bajoran Temple. Shakaar studies Odo for a beat. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 15A. 11 CONTINUED: SHAKAAR I understand you used to work for the Cardassians when they were running the station. Odo stiffens a bit, wondering why Shakaar is bringing this up. ODO I was in charge of keeping order on the Promenade. SHAKAAR They could've given that job to one of their own people. They must've thought very highly of you. The statement hangs in the air for a beat... although Shakaar's tone was neutral, Odo can't help but wonder if it's an accusation... SHAKAAR I know Kira does. She once told me she trusted you with her life. Odo reacts to this unexpected turn in the conversation. ODO I'm gratified to hear that... SHAKAAR I've always found her to be a good judge of character... so I'll trust you with my life, as well. Odo acknowledges this gesture of faith with a nod. People are beginning to recognize Shakaar; some are rushing to see him, pressing forward to offer their hands. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 16. 11 CONTINUED: (2) Shakaar works the crowd, smiling and taking the hands that are offered to him. 12 ON ODO flanking Shakaar, trying to keep people from overrunning him. He scans the crowd with determination, looking for possible danger. INTERCUT WITH: 13 ODO'S POV -- people's faces, some smiling, some overcome with emotion... WORF'S COM VOICE Worf to Odo, we've secured the Temple. ODO I'll try to get him inside as soon as I can. -- a woman catches his eye, bending down to get something from below... Odo reacts as she emerges into his view again... he steps toward her, expecting the worst... until he sees that she's merely lifting her young son up so that he can see Shakaar... 14 ON SHAKAAR as he steps to the entrance to the Bajoran Temple, waves a final time to the crowd, then EXITS inside... Odo takes up position outside the door, his face registering relief... 15 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Re-establishing. 16 INT. WARDROOM This is a reception giving the station's most important Bajoran residents the chance to meet Shakaar; we see Vedeks, shopkeepers, and some uniformed Bajoran officers. There's not a single Starfleet Uniform in sight. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 17. 16 CONTINUED: Quark and a few other FERENGI WAITERS are catering the affair. Shakaar is surrounded by a knot of eager Bajoran faces; he's listening intently to their problems and concerns. Odo hovers nearby, discreetly keeping an eye on him. 17 ON KIRA AND SARISH watching Shakaar as he fields questions from the group that surrounds him. Kira is still in her dress uniform. KIRA Is it always like this? SARISH (nods) It's not every day people get a chance to talk to the First Minister. Besides... (lightly) Have you ever met a Bajoran who didn't have a fervent opinion about everything from Prophetic interpretation to farm policy? KIRA (smiles) I guess not. Sarish sees someone across the room. SARISH Is that Vedek Tonsa? KIRA Yes. SARISH I hear he's an excellent springball player. KIRA He's one of the best on the station. Why? SARISH I think I'll see if we can arrange a game. KIRA I hope you're good. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 18. 17 CONTINUED: SARISH I'm terrible. (off Kira's surprise) But it'll give me a chance to talk to him about supporting Shakaar in the Vedek Assembly. He gives Kira a wink and moves off to talk to Tonsa. Kira sees Odo standing alone and approaches. KIRA Do you have to stare like that? I think it's making people nervous. ODO Good. Kira smiles... A quiet moment passes as they stand together surveying the crowd... there's nothing awkward about the silence between them, they're good enough friends to be wordless with each other... KIRA You know, I've been meaning to ask you... (indicating his waist) ... how come you don't wear that belt anymore? Odo never imagined that someone would notice something like that and it takes him off guard. ODO I don't know. (looks down at himself) It didn't really serve a purpose... it's not as if I needed it to hold my pants up. KIRA I just thought it looked good on you, that's all. Odo is a little flustered by her attention to this. ODO Really? KIRA Really. Odo feels absurdly pleased with Kira's attention. ODO If you say so... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 18A. 17A NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) as Odo MORPHS a belt around his waist. ODO Better? KIRA Much. Odo nods, feeling a bit like a Beau Brummel. Kira looks Shakaar's way and sees that he's still surrounded by people. Odo follows her glance, sees the trace of disappointment on her features. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 19. 17A CONTINUED: KIRA You know... I think I'll turn in. And now we see a similar trace of disappointment on Odo's features. ODO Of course. Good night, Major. KIRA Night. She starts to snake her way through the crowd toward the door. Suddenly Quark appears at his side brandishing a tray. QUARK Care for some hasperat? ODO You know I don't eat. QUARK (pleased with himself) Have something. I'm charging by the head for this little function, and you do have a head... at the moment. Odo doesn't reply, and Quark follows his gaze to... 18 SHAKAAR as he sees Kira leaving and excuses himself from the people he's talking to. SHAKAAR Would you excuse me... He moves to intercept her, take her arm from behind... SHAKAAR Nerys... She turns, smiles when she sees it's him. 19 ON ODO AND QUARK as Quark watches Odo's face as he takes all this in. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 20. 20 ON KIRA AND SHAKAAR SHAKAAR Where are you going? You haven't even said hello. KIRA You were so busy, I didn't want to bother you. SHAKAAR You wouldn't be bothering me, you'd be rescuing me. KIRA That bad? SHAKAAR You have no idea. KIRA (wry) I don't suppose this would be a good time for me to give you my opinion about how Bajor should be dealing with the Klingons? SHAKAAR Actually, it would be. But not here. KIRA I was joking. SHAKAAR Fine, then we'll talk about something else. Let's take a walk. Kira smiles through her surprise. KIRA Okay. Shakaar takes Kira by the arm and they start for the door. 21 ON ODO AND QUARK as Odo reacts to their movement and starts toward them. Quark watches him go for a beat, his features thoughtful, before turning away and getting back to work. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 21. 22 NEW ANGLE Odo intercepting Kira and Shakaar, who were held back by a well-wisher. SHAKAAR (to Odo) We're going to take a stroll. ODO If you tell me where you're going, I'll secure your route. SHAKAAR (smiling) If I knew where we were going, it wouldn't be a stroll, would it? Odo stifles his reaction. ODO I suppose not. I'll escort you. SHAKAAR Fine, but just you. Shakaar steps toward the door, and as he passes by Odo, leans in close. SHAKAAR (sotto) And don't stay too close. Odo is unsure what to make of this, but turns and follows Shakaar and Kira out... 23 INT. CORRIDOR as Shakaar and Kira ENTER and make their way down it, Odo a few paces behind. Guards are in evidence along the corridor, but Odo motions them to stay put. 24 INT. ANOTHER CORRIDOR as Shakaar and Kira round the corner, Odo trailing them. They're engaged in quiet conversation, oblivious to his presence. 25 ON ODO as he sees Shakaar lean in and say something to Kira that causes her to break into a laugh. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT ONE 22. 25 CONTINUED: Almost unconsciously, he slows his step, as if to drop behind them a few paces and give them more privacy. Off Odo's features as he trails behind them we... FADE OUT END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT TWO 23. ACT TWO FADE IN: 26 INT. HABITAT RING CORRIDOR Odo is standing guard by the door to the wardroom. Other Guards are positioned at intersections along the corridor. After a moment the door OPENS and Shakaar steps out of the conference room. Behind him, we can see Sarish seated at the table, talking with THREE FEDERATION DIPLOMATS in CIVILIAN CLOTHES. Shakaar looks less than happy with the results of a long and arduous morning. SHAKAAR Let's go. ODO Where? SHAKAAR (abrupt) Back to my quarters. ODO This way. They start down the corridor, and Odo signals to one of the other Guards to take the lead. 27 INT. ANOTHER HABITAT RING CORRIDOR as Odo, Shakaar and the Guard make their way toward Shakaar's quarters. Odo can't help but notice Shakaar's mood. ODO I take it the negotiations aren't going all that well. SHAKAAR How'd you know? ODO The truth is, Bajorans are even less successful than most humanoids in hiding their emotions. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT TWO 24. 27 CONTINUED: SHAKAAR (wry) So you're saying it's as plain as the nose on my face. Odo acknowledges Shakaar's humor. ODO I've been working with the Federation for a number of years. They claim to be open and understanding, but somehow, they're always convinced they're right. It can be exasperating at times. SHAKAAR I'm trying to get them to cut the timetable for Bajor's admittance to the Federation by half. Every time I think I've made them understand my reasons, they "remind" me that every Federation member has gone through the same admissions process. ODO (knowing) And why should Bajor be any different. SHAKAAR (sarcastic) I can't think of a single reason. ODO Unless of course, you take into account the effects a fifty year occupation might have on a society. SHAKAAR (someone understands) Thank you. They reach the door to Shakaar's quarters, where TWO GUARDS are posted. SHAKAAR I've been a soldier and I've been a politician... (wry) I have to say, I'm starting to think being a soldier was easier. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT TWO 25. 27 CONTINUED: (2) Shakaar gestures toward the door. 28 INT. SHAKAAR'S QUARTERS as Odo and Shakaar ENTER. ODO I'm afraid I don't know much about politics. The door shuts behind them. SHAKAAR Well, you agree with me. (smiling) As far as I'm concerned, that makes you an expert. Shakaar smiles, gestures that Odo take a seat. Odo sits, but now he's wondering why Shakaar asked him inside. Shakaar sits on a nearby chair, and a small silence settles between the two men for a beat. SHAKAAR You know... I realize I haven't made your job any easier the past few days. ODO I can't argue with that. Shakaar can't help but smile at Odo's honesty. SHAKAAR I want to be sure you understand that I appreciate your thoroughness. ODO Thank you. An awkward moment... then Shakaar decides to dive in. SHAKAAR Odo... I know you and Nerys are friends. And I was wondering... (with difficulty) Has she ever talked to you about me? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT TWO 26. 28 CONTINUED: ODO Of course. She's spoken about you on more than one occasion. SHAKAAR What I mean is... has she ever said anything that would indicate that... (this isn't easy) ... maybe she thought of me as more than just a friend? This is a confirmation of what Odo sensed when he saw Shakaar with Kira. If he had blood in his veins, it would go cold. It takes him a moment to reply. ODO Hmm... let me think. (a beat, then flat) No. Shakaar is not happy to hear this. SHAKAAR I see. A quiet moment... SHAKAAR I've known Nerys for over ten years. I've trusted her with my life on more than one occasion. ODO So have I. SHAKAAR She knew how to follow orders. She never complained when things got rough. She was a good soldier and a good friend. But now, somehow, it's different. ODO Is it? She's still your friend. SHAKAAR I know. (beat) But I think -- I'm falling in love with her. Odo says nothing, almost as if he doesn't trust himself to speak. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT TWO 26A. 28 CONTINUED: (2) SHAKAAR Sometimes I get the sense that maybe, just maybe, she feels the same way. But I could be wrong. I'm afraid that if I say anything, I might ruin our friendship. But if I don't, I could be letting something precious slip through my fingers. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT TWO 27. 28 CONTINUED: (3) This is eerie for Odo... it's as if Shakaar is giving voice to his thoughts... ODO It's... a difficult situation. Shakaar lets out a long breath... SHAKAAR For all I know I've gotten myself all twisted up over nothing. If she hasn't said anything to you, then this whole thing is probably just in my head. Odo is not about to admit that he really doesn't know Kira's heart. But there is one thing he does believe: ODO Frankly, I think she's still grieving for Vedek Bareil. SHAKAAR Of course. It's only natural. (considers) Maybe I just need to be patient. ODO That's... what I would do. SHAKAAR On the other hand, maybe I should let her know how I feel. It might help her get over her loss if she knew that there was someone else who cared about her. (beat) What do you think? In truth, Odo prefers plan A, but he's not about to say so. ODO I'm afraid I know even less about relationships than I do about politics. Shakaar decides not to push him. SHAKAAR I understand... I don't mean to burden you with my problems. Shakaar stands, realizing that he should probably let Odo go. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT TWO 28. 28 CONTINUED: (4) SHAKAAR Talking about humanoid relationships can't be very interesting for you. ODO For the most part, no... A moment as they acknowledge the conversation they've shared, and then they part ways... 29 INT. WARDROOM where Quark is putting the finishing touches on a buffet table, complete with a PUNCH BOWL. Odo is scanning the room with a TRICORDER, and now approaches Quark's food display and starts scanning it. QUARK You don't have to bother, Odo, I can personally vouch for every one of my employees who had access to this food. Odo stops scanning for a beat. ODO I can't tell you how relieved that makes me feel. And with that, he continues scanning. Suddenly he reacts to some odd reading. Cautiously, he moves the tricorder closer to a fruit basket. ODO I'm reading some sort of power signature... Odo works the tricorder, then reaches in to the basket to pick out a small DEVICE. ODO A Ferengi eavesdropping device... (turning to Quark) I don't suppose you know anything about this? For a moment, Quark can't decide which way to jump. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT TWO 29. 29 CONTINUED: QUARK There it is. I've been looking for that all day. ODO You admit it's yours? QUARK (what of it?) I must've misplaced it. ODO I take it you were hoping to peddle information about Shakaar's meeting? QUARK Odo, you know as well as I do that it's illegal to listen to someone's conversation without their consent. ODO Why else would someone like you own such an expensive listening device? Quark has to think fast... QUARK I use it to monitor Rom's sleep. You see, ever since he was a boy, my brother's had this condition where he sometimes stops breathing in the middle of the night. I just can't sleep unless I know he's all right. ODO Very touching. Odo holds the device out as if to return it, and Quark reaches to take back his property. To his dismay, Odo lets the device drop into the punch bowl. We hear a FRITZING SOUND that tells us it shorted out. ODO How clumsy of me. QUARK You're in a bad mood today. ODO I don't have moods. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT TWO 30. 29 CONTINUED: (2) Quark starts fishing around the bowl to retrieve the device. QUARK Of course not. You're an unfeeling changeling. All you care about is order. ODO That's right. QUARK Oh, please. I know what's going on. You don't have to pretend with me. By this point Quark has fished out the device, seen that it's ruined, and thrown it away. ODO I have no idea what you're talking about. QUARK You're in love with her. ODO Who? QUARK Kira. Odo is surprised by Quark's insight, but isn't about to show it, so he continues scanning the room. ODO That's ridiculous. QUARK And what's more, you're worried she's falling in love with Shakaar. Odo is momentarily stunned to realize that Quark has seen through his facade, but he's not about to give him the satisfaction of admitting it. ODO (dismissive) Is that a fact. QUARK It's the truth. Why can't you just admit it? It's nothing to be ashamed of. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT TWO 31. 29 CONTINUED: (3) Odo has no ready response for this. It's a question he's probably asked himself a million times: "Why can't I tell her how I feel?" QUARK (with sympathy) Look, Odo, I know this can't be easy for you... Eliciting sympathy from Quark makes Odo feel too damn pathetic, so he lashes out sharply -- ODO I don't want your sympathy, Quark. And I don't need your advice. Just stay out of my business. And with that, Odo turns and stalks from the room... off Quark's features as he watches him go we... FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT THREE 32. ACT THREE FADE IN: 30 INT. SECURITY OFFICE - CLOSE ON A RAKTAJINO sitting on the edge of Odo's desk, arranged just so. PAN to REVEAL a PADD laid out next to it, square with the line of the desk... then MOVE to INCLUDE -- 31 ODO sitting behind his desk, waiting. After a moment... ODO Computer, time. COMPUTER VOICE Oh-eight twenty-one hours. Kira's twenty minutes late. She's never late for their Tuesday morning meetings. Odo sits for another long moment, then finally the door OPENS and she ENTERS. KIRA Sorry I'm late. I didn't realize what time it was. Odo nods to acknowledge the apology, but says nothing to let her off the hook. He studies the computer monitor in front of him as if he's been busy looking over the Criminal Activity Report and has hardly noticed the time. Kira takes a seat, picks up the PADD, leaving the raktajino untouched. KIRA So what've we got? ODO Nine items. Odo can't help but notice that Kira hasn't touched her raktajino. He watches over the top of his computer screen as she studies her PADD, expecting her to reach to pick up the drink any second. KIRA (off PADD) Hmm... so far, it's all fairly routine. Still, she ignores her drink. Finally, she notices Odo's intent stare. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT THREE 32A. 31 CONTINUED: KIRA Something wrong? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT THREE 33. 31 CONTINUED: (2) ODO Your raktajino... ? KIRA (realizing) Oh, I had one this morning with Shakaar. Odo nods as if accepting this matter-of-factly, but the truth is he's wondering where they shared a morning raktajino, under what circumstances? After a moment... ODO I didn't... see you in the Replimat. KIRA It was in his quarters. He asked me to look over a proposal he's going to make to the Federation delegates. ODO Ah... Odo returns his attention to the PADD in his hand. He sees something that he was looking forward to calling Kira's attention to. ODO There's an interesting story behind item four... But Kira gently informs him that she has to go. KIRA I'd love to hear it, but I'm a little pressed for time right now. ODO (all right) Of course. KIRA I promised Shakaar I'd give him a tour of the station. Odo nods that he understands. ODO I'll make sure security is in place. KIRA Thanks. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT THREE 34-35. 31 CONTINUED: (3) She sets the PADD down, stands. KIRA See you later. And with that, she turns and EXITS. UPPER PYLON where Kira is showing Shakaar the view from one of the windows. Odo stands a discreet distance away. KIRA The upper pylons have the best view of the wormhole. SHAKAAR (looking out) I've never seen it, actually... Kira reacts... her face says "You're really missing something." KIRA Why don't we stay a few minutes, a ship might go through and you could see it open. SHAKAAR (joking) You're the first officer, can't you order a ship through? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT THREE 33 CONTINUED: KIRA (smiles) You're the First Minister, you should be able to order an entire fleet through. They share a smile... A quiet moment as they both stand and look out the window... the mood starts to take on an intimate feel... 34 ON ODO as he looks away from them, as if sensing the change in mood... 35 ON KIRA AND SHAKAAR (OPTICAL) SHAKAAR (quiet) The other day I heard someone say that if you happen to see the wormhole open, you get to make a wish. KIRA That's been going around the station for a while now... Their eyes meet, and a look passes between them... it's as if they're both attracted to each other, but neither knows for certain that the other feels the same way... KIRA Look... Through the window behind them we see the wormhole OPEN... a moment, then it's gone. KIRA Did you make a wish... ? He turns to her, looks her squarely in the eye... SHAKAAR Yes... They're standing very close, and they look at each other for a long beat... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT THREE 37. 35 CONTINUED: ... then Shakaar leans toward her almost imperceptibly, as if to see how she might respond to a kiss... the moment hangs in the air for a beat, then he seems to remember they're not alone, glances Odo's way... 36 ON ODO studiously staring at the wall in front of him. 37 ON SHAKAAR AND KIRA as they look at each other. KIRA We should get going... there's a lot more to see. Shakaar nods, and they turn away from the window and start toward the turbolift. ODO (hits combadge) Odo to Worf. INTERCUT WITH: 38 INT. SECURITY OFFICE WORF Go ahead. ODO'S COM VOICE We're heading back down to the Docking Ring. WORF (off monitor) Acknowledged. Your route has been secured. They EXIT to the turbolift and the door shuts behind them. 39 INT. TURBOLIFT as Odo, Kira and Shakaar ENTER and take position. ODO Level Two-D. COMPUTER VOICE Please enter security code. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT THREE 38. 39 CONTINUED: Odo works the panel and the Turbolift starts to descend. We see the LIGHTS whiz by as the car passes each floor. A quiet moment passes... SHAKAAR You know... I haven't had a meal outside the wardroom or my quarters since I got here. KIRA There are some nice places to eat on the Promenade. SHAKAAR You have a favorite? 40 NEW ANGLE favoring Odo, who senses that Shakaar is trying to work up to asking her to dinner, but is having a hard time of it. KIRA Actually, there's a new Bolian restaurant that's pretty good. SHAKAAR I've never had Bolian food. KIRA I know this isn't going to sound very appetizing, but the meat they use is sort of... aged. As Kira continues, Worf's com voice cuts in: SHAKAAR WORF'S COM VOICE Aged? Worf to Odo, a turbolift is stuck on Level KIRA Forty-one. We're going Well, partially to have to re-route decayed would be more you. accurate. But it's really delicious. ODO Verify your security SHAKAAR code and I'll release I'll take your word the controls to you. for it; why don't we go there tonight? Shakaar's question hangs there and right now, Kira's answer is the most important thing in the world to Odo. KIRA I'd love to. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT THREE 39-40. 40 CONTINUED: Odo reacts, and in his distraction, reaches and works the panel before getting the codes verified. Suddenly, the Turbolift lurches once and goes into a free-fall. The LIGHTS start whizzing by faster and faster. KIRA We're falling! Odo starts working the Turbolift control panel to see if he can stop their fall. Kira slaps her combadge, but there's no response, not even a com-beep. KIRA Kira to Worf. She slaps it again, still nothing. KIRA Someone cut our com-links. ODO (giving up on the panel) The controls aren't responding... CUT TO: 41 INT. TURBOLIFT (FORMERLY IN ACT THREE) The LIGHTS whiz by ever faster... we HEAR the rush of wind as the Turbolift cuts through the air in the shaft... A grim moment as they realize they're helpless... then, Odo gets an idea: he plants himself firmly in the middle of the car, then reaches and places his hands flat against the front and back of the car... 43 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) Odo MORPHS his arms into metal rods... there are flat plates on the ends, and screw-like threading along the shafts. 44 THE BACK-WALL The shaft starts to rotate slowly, extending itself as it unscrews... causing the metal to CRUMPLE outward from the pressure... 45 RESUME SCENE Odo straining against the walls... suddenly, we hear the SOUND of metal scraping on metal... CUT TO: 46 INT. TURBOLIFT SHAFT (OPTICAL) as the car plummets, SPARKS fly up from either side... Odo is creating friction on the sides of the car, slowing it... 47 INT. TURBOLIFT (OPTICAL) as we see the LIGHTS start to WHIZ by more slowly... the terrible SOUND of grinding metal continues... until, finally, the car lurches to a stop... As they catch their breath, Odo UNMORPHS to his normal state. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95. - ACT FOUR 41A. 47 CONTINUED: SHAKAAR I guess this means my tour's over... Off this moment... 48 INT. CAPTAIN'S OFFICE where Odo is standing before Sisko's desk. Sisko can't quite believe what he's hearing. SISKO You're telling me that someone overrode the station's com system, faked Worf's voice, and sent one of our turbolifts into a free fall... ? ODO I'm afraid so, sir. Apparently they tapped into the com system with a voice synthesizer. SISKO What I want to know is how they got Worf's security code. ODO We don't know that they did, sir. SISKO What do you mean? Odo's professional pride is on the line as he has to make the terrible admission: ODO I turned over control of the turbolift without verifying his code. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FOUR 41B. 48 CONTINUED: Sisko couldn't be more surprised. After a moment... SISKO They say to err is human (beat) But you're not human, Odo. You're not even humanoid. And this isn't the sort of mistake I'd expect from you. We can see that it pains Odo to hear this from his commanding officer. ODO I was... distracted. SISKO Distracted? ODO It's a personal matter. I prefer not to discuss it. Sisko has too much respect for Odo to ignore his request. SISKO All right, Constable. But whatever this personal matter is, don't let it interfere with your job again. ODO It won't, sir. SISKO That's all I need to hear. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FOUR 42. 48 CONTINUED: (2) Sisko sits behind his desk. SISKO No ships have been allowed to leave since this incident occurred. That means that whoever was responsible is still on the station. I want them found. ODO Yes, sir. And with that, Sisko dismisses him... Odo EXITS; off Sisko's thoughtful face... 49 INT. SECURITY OFFICE where Odo and Worf are at work on various PADDS. Actually, Worf is the one working; the truth is, Odo is ignoring the PADD in his hand and is pretty much staring at the wall, lost in thought. WORF (off PADD) It appears that they accessed the turbolift control system through the ODN relays. Worf looks up and is a little annoyed to see that Odo is barely paying attention. He picks up a different PADD. WORF There might be a trace of the access signal left in the relays, if we can isolate it, we might be able to follow it back to the source. If Odo heard him, he gave no indication. Finally, Worf says something. WORF Odo. (when he's got Odo's attention) Are you listening? ODO I've heard every word. WORF Your mind doesn't seem to be on your work. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FOUR 43. 49 CONTINUED: Odo is in no mood for this... ODO With all due respect, commander, you don't know me well enough to gauge my state of mind. WORF When someone fails to ask for security verification, their state of mind is obvious. ODO (hard) Is it. WORF And with all due respect, I do not see how sitting in a chair staring at a wall is going to help apprehend Shakaar's would-be assassin. ODO You're right, it's not. (standing) I'm going to go talk to Major Kira. WORF Why? She already gave us her statement. ODO You follow your leads, Commander, I'll follow mine. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FOUR 44. 49 CONTINUED: (2) And with that, Odo turns and EXITS. Worf watches him go for a beat, then returns to his work... 50 INT. HABITAT RING CORRIDOR as Odo makes his way toward Kira's quarters. He comes to an intersection and sees a Guard posted there, then rounds the corner and is surprised to see another Guard, JIMENEZ, posted outside her door. A third Guard is posted further down the corridor. ODO What are these men doing here, Jimenez? JIMENEZ First Minister Shakaar is in Major Kira's Quarters. Odo tries not to betray his reaction to this news. ODO How long has he been there? JIMENEZ Since they finished dinner, about three hours ago. ODO All right, ensign. You're relieved. JIMENEZ Sir, I'm not scheduled to go off duty for another four -- ODO I said you're relieved. I'll take the rest of your shift. JIMENEZ Yes, sir. Without another word, Jimenez moves off down the corridor. He and the second Guard exchange a puzzled look as he passes, then he's gone... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FOUR 45. 51 ON ODO as he takes position outside Kira's door. His face says it all... the woman he loves is behind closed doors with another man. He can't know what's going on in there, but the possibilities are gnawing at him. DISSOLVE TO: 52 INT. HABITAT RING CORRIDOR where Odo, is now in a slightly different position. It is now morning. After a moment the door suddenly OPENS to reveal Kira and Shakaar in mid-conversation. She's in civilian clothes, and there's an easy manner between she and Shakaar. SHAKAAR Great, I'll see you then. Just now, Kira sees Odo, outside the door. She was a expecting a security officer, but not necessarily someone she knows so well, and it takes her off guard. KIRA Good morning... Odo musters a professional nod, then waves the two Guards over. ODO May I ask where you're going, First Minister? SHAKAAR My quarters, then to the meeting in the Wardroom. Odo turns to the Guards to indicate they should escort him, and the three men move off (off-screen com voices should give us the impression that the Guards are checking in with other security personnel, clearing Shakaar's route). Odo is desperate to know what happened, wanting more than anything to hear it was nothing... but even so, he can't bring himself to ask. ODO Major, I was wondering if you had a moment to answer a few questions about what happened in the turbolift. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95. - ACT FOUR 46. 52 CONTINUED: KIRA Sure. Come on in. 53 INT. KIRA-S QUARTERS as Odo and Kira ENTER and the door shuts behind them. The LIGHTS are DIMMED, there's a half-empty bottle of champagne on a nearby table, two glasses; a few candles are burning their last inches, as if they'd been lit all night. It's clear even to Odo that these are the vestiges of a night of romance. KIRA Lights. The LIGHT level RISES to NORMAL. Kira turns to Odo with a smile; she wants to share her happiness with her friend, and since she has no idea how Odo feels about her, there's no reason for her to hide anything. Odo looks at her, unsure what the spreading smile on her face could mean. ODO Did I do something amusing... ? KIRA No, it's just... Edon and I... we... Though he's dying inside, Odo tries not to show it. ODO I understand. She jumps onto the couch, sits cross-legged as she tells the story. KIRA If someone had told me a year ago that this was going to happen, you know what I would've said? You're crazy. Yes, I respect him. Yes, he makes me laugh. But we know each other too well. He's seen me go weeks without a bath, we've spent long cold nights huddled together for warmth... there's no mystery left between us. We're friends, that's all. She shakes her head in wonder... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FOUR 47. 53 CONTINUED: KIRA I guess I was wrong. She turns and looks at Odo... who does his best to sound glad for her. ODO I'm... happy for you. KIRA This all probably seems very silly to you. She can have no idea how deeply this tears at him. ODO No... not in the least. She leans over to give him a kiss on the cheek. KIRA You're such a good friend to me. I'm glad you're the first person to know. Odo manages a nod of agreement... KIRA So, you wanted to ask me something about what happened in the turbolift? ODO Yes, but... we can talk about it later. KIRA Are you sure? ODO Yes, I... have an appointment. KIRA All right. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FOUR 48. 53 CONTINUED: (2) There's a moment we think Odo might say something else, then he takes his leave. 54 INT. HABITAT RING CORRIDOR as Odo ENTERS from Kira's quarters. When the door shuts behind him, he stops to pull himself together... off the emotion in his features... 55 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Re-establishing. 56 INT. SECURITY OFFICE Odo ENTERS and finds Worf and another Guard with a MALE ALIEN in their custody. WORF (to Guard) Take him to a holding cell. The Guard hustles the Alien toward the back. Odo looks at Worf, decides he should try to be a little friendlier. ODO What'd he do... ? WORF He was responsible for the attack on First Minister Shakaar. Odo wasn't expecting this and is stunned to hear it. ODO What? WORF He has admitted to being a True Way operative. They provided him with an isolinear interface to access station systems. Odo can't believe Worf got their man without him. He's supposed to be the relentless lawman, the one who never gives up... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FOUR 49. 56 CONTINUED: WORF He was attempting to use it to depressurize Shakaar's quarters by sabatoging the environmental controls. ODO (flustered) I see... WORF When he tried to access them, I traced the signal path back to him. He was operating out of an abandoned cargo hold on Level Thirty-one. Odo is disturbed by the fact that he wasn't part of it... ODO Why didn't you call me before you made the arrest? WORF It wasn't necessary. This hits home. If there's one thing Odo has always believed, it's that he's good at his job, better than anyone. Perhaps Worf sees the depth of Odo's reaction to what's happened, because after a beat, he continues with genuine sincerity. WORF Your deputies assisted me quite capably. They are well-trained. You're to be commended. But Odo, is so thrown by the situation that he doesn't acknowledge the compliment. Worf EXITS to the holding area... leaving Odo, to contemplate what's happened... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FOUR 50. 57 INT. ODO'S QUARTERS as Odo ENTERS and comes to a stop just inside his door, as if he doesn't quite know what to do with himself. He's a man defeated on every front: the woman he loves is with someone else, he's not needed at his job... He lets out a frustrated breath, slams a fist against the surface of his "jungle gym." Suddenly, as if finding that this feels unexpectedly good, he explodes in a rage, starts tearing the place apart... He smashes a piece of the jungle gym in two... throws part of it against a wall... as he swings a second piece around toward the CAMERA and it grows large enough to fill the FRAME we... BLACKOUT. END OF ACT FOUR DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FIVE 51. ACT FIVE FADE IN: 58 INT. ODO'S QUARTERS where we find Odo sitting slumped on the floor amidst the wreckage of his room. The lights are DIMMED so that it's DARK. His jungle gym is upended and scattered, furniture is thrown in a corner. The door CHIMES, but Odo is oblivious; he just sits there, staring numbly. We hear a muffled VOICE from outside. QUARK (O.S.) I know you're in there. 59 INT. CORRIDOR Quark is standing at the door in his BATHROBE, furious at the noise Odo's been making. QUARK I heard you. No answer. QUARK Fine, we'll do this the hard way. Quark bends to study the door control panel, starts working it, his fingers flying. 60 INT. ODO'S QUARTERS Odo hasn't moved. After a beat, the door OPENS and Quark reacts to the wreckage. Odo is facing away from him, so Quark can't see the look on his face. QUARK I knew it would come to this. You take the form of an animal, you're going to end up behaving like one. (crossing in) What was it... a Klingon targ, a Trellan crocodile? Quark comes to a stop a few paces behind Odo, who remains silent. QUARK Well, I've had it. This time, you crossed the line. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95.- ACT FIVE 52. 60 CONTINUED: QUARK (Cont'd) (no response) Odo. Quark moves around and reacts when he sees the vacant look on Odo's face... clearly something is very wrong with Odo. QUARK Odo... ? Are you okay? After a long moment, Odo seems to almost smile to himself... when he speaks, it's in a hoarse whisper. ODO You were right... Quark realizes what this is all about. QUARK Ah... I take it Shakaar and Major Kira are... Odo, manages a nod... QUARK (re: the wreckage) Whew... you really are in love. Quark settles to a sitting position near him. QUARK I've got to say, I really didn't think you had it in you. It takes passion to do something like this, and I always thought you were colder than a Breen winter. After a moment, Odo shakes his head morosely... ODO What was I thinking? How could I have fooled myself into believing she could ever love someone like me? Quark is thoughtful for a moment... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FIVE 53. 60 CONTINUED: (2) QUARK Look, the last thing I want to do is interfere with your personal life... (re: wreckage) But this... this just isn't any good, for either of us. ODO (sardonic) I'll try to keep my problems more quiet next time... QUARK I'm not talking about the noise, I'm talking about business. I'm losing my shirt in the Manhunt Pool. ODO The what? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FIVE 60 CONTINUED: (3) QUARK Anytime there's an unusual crime committed on the station, I run a pool so people can bet on how long it'll take you to catch the perpetrator. It's very popular. In another context, Odo might be flattered to hear this. QUARK Frankly, I don't care whether you and Kira end up living happily ever after or not, I just want the situation resolved. And the way I see it, you've either got to tell her how you feel, or forget about her and get on with your life. Concentrate on the essentials. Because you can't keep going like this. It's interfering with your job... and my profits. ODO Your profits? QUARK Unless you do something about this situation, I'm going to have to stop running the pool. ODO (sarcastic) I'm devastated. QUARK You should be. Because the fact that that pool exists says something about you. About who you are. People see you as the guy who always gets his man. Now you're becoming the guy who tears up his quarters and sits alone in the rubble. And no one is going to want to place bets on how long someone is going to sit around in the dark. Odo takes this in, and we can see that Quark's words are getting through to him... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FIVE 55. 60 CONTINUED: (4) QUARK Well, I've said my piece... Quark stands, moves toward the door. QUARK Sorry for butting in, but I'm just looking out for my business. ODO Funny... for a minute there, I thought you were talking to me as a friend. Quark holds his gaze for a beat... QUARK Naw... A moment, and we get the sense that they both know he doesn't mean it... 61 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Re-establishing. 62 INT. KIRA'S QUARTERS where Kira is getting ready to start the day. The door CHIMES. KIRA Yes. The door OPENS to reveal Odo, and Kira's reaction tells us she wasn't expecting him. A discerning eye might notice that Odo is no longer wearing the belt that Kira mentioned liking in the wardroom. ODO Good morning, Major. KIRA Come on in. what brings you by? ODO I wanted to talk to you about something... Odo's manner indicates it's something important... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FIVE 56. 62 CONTINUED: ... but he's having a hard time getting it out. After a moment... KIRA What is it? Odo takes a breath... ODO I don't quite know how to say this... but I've given it a lot of thought, and... He stops, and when he doesn't continue for a beat... KIRA Go on... just say it. Odo comes out with it, though his voice is full of regret. ODO I'm afraid I won't be able to make our Tuesday morning meetings anymore. Kira is surprised and a bit disappointed. KIRA Oh... Why not? ODO I've decided to schedule additional training exercises with my deputies. KIRA Well, maybe we can have our meetings at another time? ODO My schedule is rather tight. And lets face it, the Criminal Activity Reports speak for themselves. There's really no reason we have to review them together. KIRA Maybe not... but I kind of enjoyed doing it. I thought you did too. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FIVE 56A. 62 CONTINUED: (2) ODO Of course. Kira knows Odo well enough to see there's something more going on here than scheduling conflicts. KIRA Odo... is something wrong? ODO It's just a matter of... using my time more efficiently. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95.- ACT FIVE 57. 62 CONTINUED: (3) She also knows him well enough to know that he can't be pushed into talking. KIRA I understand. ODO Well... When he steps toward the door, Kira notices he's no longer sporting the belt. KIRA No belt? He considers how best to put it... ODO I'm just trying to keep to the essentials, Major... KIRA (nodding) See you. And with that, he EXITS... off Kira's face as she contemplates his visit... 63 INT. QUARK'S where Quark is working behind the bar as Odo ENTERS. SUPERNUMERARIES as needed. Quark thinks he knows why Odo's here. QUARK They're upstairs. ODO Who? QUARK Kira and Shakaar. They're in Holosuite Three, practicing the speech he's going to give tomorrow before he leaves. I hear he's going to announce that the Federation has agreed to cut the timetable for Bajor's admittance. ODO Where'd you hear that? QUARK (covering) Just a rumor. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FIVE 58. 63 CONTINUED: ODO Are you sure you haven't been listening in on your holosuites again? QUARK Even if I wanted to, I couldn't. I don't have the right equipment. ODO Not anymore. Quark frowns at the memory of what Odo did to his eavesdropping device. QUARK By the way, I dropped by your quarters this morning. ODO Oh? QUARK I heard some noise, and when I went up there to complain, I found a work crew installing soundproofing in the floor. I have to say, Odo, I'm touched. That you would do something like that for me... Odo is not about to admit to Quark that he's doing it for him. ODO I'm having the floor... reinforced. The fact that they're soundproofing it as well is incidental. QUARK Uh-huh... ODO If you think I'd put up with three days of construction for your sake, think again. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Crossfire" - 11/27/95 - ACT FIVE 59. 63 CONTINUED: (2) Quark knows the rules of their engagements as well as Odo does. Just as Odo let him pretend it was "just business" in his quarters, Quark returns the favor... QUARK I guess I should've known. Thanks, anyway... Now that they're square. ODO Don't mention it. A customer calls Quark over, and he moves off to take his order. Odo turns away from the bar in time to see... 64 KIRA AND SHAKAAR coming down the staircase from the second level. Even though the assassin has been caught, there are Guards in front and behind them. Odo watches as they make their way to a table, laughing and smiling, eyes only for each other... A moment as he watches... then he turns and EXITS to the Promenade. As he moves off, his hands fall into position behind his back... he's the cop on the beat once more... FADE OUT.
