STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE "The Adversary" TEASER FADE IN: 1 INT. WARDROOM Close on JAKE, who looks solemn and determined. JAKE Dad, there's something I've been wanting to say to you for a long time. And now that I finally have the chance, I'm going to make it short and simple... 2 NEW ANGLE To reveal SISKO, standing at attention. Jake reaches out and pins an additional pip on Sisko's collar. JAKE Congratulations, Captain Sisko. Sisko smiles, and Jake gives him a hug. The camera widens to reveal... 3 CROWD OF WELL-WISHERS Including KIRA, DAX, O'BRIEN, BASHIR, ODO, QUARK, LIEUTENANT COMMANDER EDDINGTON, and a number of Bajoran and Starfleet officers. Also present is FEDERATION AMBASSADOR KRAJENSKY, a skilled career politician. The senior staff immediately crowds around Sisko to offer their congratulations. KIRA (playful) Now that you have another pip on your collar, does that mean I can't disagree with you anymore? SISKO (smiling) No. It just means I'm never wrong. KIRA We'll see about that. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - TEASER 2. 3 CONTINUED: DAX (to Sisko) Curzon would've been proud of you, but not as proud as I am. SISKO That means a lot to me, Dax. ODO (to Sisko) Though I don't fully understand this humanoid obsession with rank and title, if anyone deserves to be promoted, it's you. EDDINGTON Well, as someone who is obsessed with rank and title... (smiles) Congratulations, captain. O'BRIEN That goes for me, too. It's about time. Quark approaches with a glass of champagne on a tray. QUARK This calls for a toast. BASHIR (re: the champagne) That better not be from a replicator, Quark. QUARK Chateau Cleon, twenty-three-oh-three. (smug) I already put it on your account. People begin taking glasses. Jake picks one up, and looks at Dad. JAKE Can I? SISKO I guess a sip wouldn't hurt. Everyone raises their glasses. BASHIR (to O'Brien) Chief? DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - TEASER 2A. 3 CONTINUED: (2) O'BRIEN To the newest, and best captain in Starfleet... All I can say is... (raises his glass) It's about time. Everyone cheers and takes a sip. Jake goes to take a second sip, but before he can, his father deftly takes the glass from his hand. SISKO (smiles) That's enough. Various crewmembers come up to shake Sisko's hand, as does Ambassador Krajensky. SISKO Thank you for coming, Ambassador. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - TEASER 3. 3 CONTINUED: (3) KRAJENSKY Those pips look good on you, Captain. Though to be honest, I'm not really here for the ceremony. Krajensky and Sisko begin to walk away from the others, so they can speak privately. SISKO (not surprised) I had that feeling. What can I do for you? KRAJENSKY Our intelligence reports indicate there's been a coup d'etat on the Tzenkethi homeworld. SISKO I doubt anyone is going to miss the Autarch. KRAJENSKY I know I won't. (a beat) Unfortunately, it's too early to tell who's in control. But we don't want to take any chances. We need to remind the Tzenkethi that the Federation is committed to protecting our colonies near their border. SISKO (knows what he means) You want to show the flag. KRAJENSKY Exactly. (a beat) The Defiant will leave in two days for a week-long patrol. I'll be coming along as an observer. I've heard a lot about the Defiant. I'm looking forward to seeing her in operation. SISKO I don't think you'll be disappointed. She's a fine ship. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - TEASER 4. 3 CONTINUED: (4) KRAJENSKY With a fine crew. (smiles) Now what do you say we get back to the party? Sisko smiles his acknowledgment, and he and Krajensky rejoin the others. As Sisko walks toward them, O'Brien, Dax, and Bashir lead the crowd in a chorus of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." 4 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE - STOCK (OPTICAL) With the Defiant docked at the outer ring. 5 INT. DEFIANT - ENGINE ROOM This is a smaller area than we're used to for Engineering sections in Starfleet ships, but with a recognizable warp core stretching from floor to ceiling. Sisko and O'Brien ENTER. SISKO I want a complete overhaul of the deflector shield generators and the targeting sensors. And take on an extra complement of photon torpedoes. O'BRIEN Don't worry, Captain, if the Tzenkethi try to make trouble, we'll be ready for them. SISKO I don't doubt it, Chief. Sisko EXITS, and O'Brien goes to work. 6 NEW ANGLE O'Brien kneels down, removes a panel and begins poking around inside. Without the sound of conversation, the engine room has an ominous feel to it. There are a number of dark corners and sharp shadows. Plenty of places for someone to hide. As O'Brien works, a shadow seems to move suddenly and rapidly behind him. O'Brien catches the movement out of the corner of his eye. He turns his head to see who's there. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - TEASER 5. 6 CONTINUED: O'BRIEN Captain? But there's no response and no one there. Nothing moves. O'Brien looks around with a puzzled and somewhat unsettled expression. He tries to shrug it off with a smile. He must have been imagining things. O'BRIEN Getting jumpy in your old age, O'Brien. O'Brien goes back to work. And as we hold on his exposed and vulnerable back... FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT ONE 6. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes) 7 INT. DEEP SPACE NINE - TURBOLIFT Sisko and Dax are in the Turbolift, headed for the docking ring. DAX So have you told her yet? SISKO Told who? DAX Captain Yates. About your promotion. SISKO I barely had time to send a transmission to my father. Anyway, I don't even know where Kasidy is. DAX She's hauling a load of duridium ore to Solais Five. You could probably contact her on subspace. SISKO I'd rather tell her in person. DAX When's she due back on the station? SISKO About a month. The Turbolift doors open and they EXIT into... 8 INT. DOCKING RING CORRIDOR As they start down the corridor. DAX (frowns) A month? (a beat) There's nothing worse than a long- distance relationship. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT ONE 7. 8 CONTINUED: SISKO I wouldn't call it a relationship, Dax. I only went out with her once. Dax looks at him skeptically. SISKO All right, twice. DAX I believe the exact figure is three times. SISKO (smiles) She's quite an interesting woman. Very independent. A little opinionated, but she has a nice sense of humor. DAX And? SISKO What do you want me to tell you, Dax? DAX That you miss her... that you can't wait to see her... I don't know... anything. Kira, O'Brien, Bashir, they're all dying of curiosity. I have to tell them something. Sisko and Dax reach the airlock. The door opens and Dax starts up the steps. SISKO Fine. Tell them that when she gets back, I plan on taking her to a holosuite to watch game seven of the nineteen sixty-four World Series. DAX (smiling) You do like her. Sisko doesn't deny it. And as they ENTER the airlock... CUT TO: DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT ONE 8. 9 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE Sisko and Dax ENTER the Bridge. O'Brien, Kira, and Odo are already at their stations. Ambassador Krajensky and Eddington are standing near the Captain's Chair. EDDINGTON (a traditional salute) Captain on the bridge. Dax takes her place at the helm and Sisko nods to Krajensky, then seats himself in the Captain's Chair. SISKO All stations report. DAX Helm ready. KIRA Weapons ready. ODO Communications systems standing by. O'BRIEN Warp and impulse engines on-line. SISKO Seal the airlock and release docking clamps. DAX Docking clamps released. SISKO Engage thrusters. DAX Clearing the station. SISKO Lay in a course to the Tzenkethi border, warp eight. DAX (smiling) Aye, aye... captain. SISKO Engage. 10 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE - STOCK (OPTICAL) As the Defiant warps away from the station. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT ONE 8A. 11 INT. DEFIANT - JEFFERIES TUBE (OPTICAL) O'Brien is still working on systems upgrades while the ship is in route to Tzenkethi space. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT ONE 9. 11 CONTINUED: Once again, stylistically, it's important to emphasize the Jefferies Tube as a claustrophobic, isolated place. It's not a comfortable place to be alone. O'Brien's making some adjustments at an open panel when he hears a noise. Trying to find the source of the noise, he looks down the tube. There's an intersection up ahead. O'BRIEN Hello... who's there? There's no answer. O'Brien goes crawling forward to investigate, and just as he's about to turn the corner... SHOCK CUT TO: 12 SHADOWY FIGURE Coming out from behind the corner. O'Brien smacks right into him and for a second, O'Brien and the audience should think O'Brien's been attacked by an intruder. But then O'Brien gets his bearings and we see it's... 13 BASHIR Looking guileless and innocent, carrying a TOOL CASE in one hand and a TOOL in the other. BASHIR You call me, Chief? O'BRIEN Julian, you scared me half to death. Why didn't you answer me? Bashir holds up the tool. BASHIR I had this spanner in my mouth. O'BRIEN (still cranky) What are you doing in here, anyway? BASHIR I was connecting my new diagnostic console into the medical bay's power grid. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT ONE 10. 13 CONTINUED: O'BRIEN I would've done that for you. BASHIR Just putting those engineering extension courses to work. Besides, I know you have your hands full. Bashir begins crawling past O'Brien toward the access panel. O'BRIEN Now where are you going? Bashir turns to O'Brien and then gives him a self-satisfied smile. BASHIR I'm done. Bashir EXITS. O'Brien waits a beat, thinks it over, and then instead of going back to his work, crawls around the corner. 14 NEW ANGLE As O'Brien opens a panel and examines the insides, double- checking Bashir's work. O'BRIEN (begrudgingly) Not bad. For extension courses. Satisfied, O'Brien closes the panel and crawls back around the corner. But the camera lingers for a beat on this empty section of conduit. 15 INT. DEFIANT - MESS HALL Since the quarters on the Defiant are so cramped, the ship is equipped with a small mess hall for dining and meetings. The room consists of four metal tables attached to the wall, plus a few replicators. It's very submarine-like in its design and the girders of the hull structure are visible in the walls and ceiling. There are no windows and no decoration. This is the crew's mess on a warship. Sisko gets a raktajino from one of the replicators, as Eddington ENTERS. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT ONE 11. 15 CONTINUED: EDDINGTON You wanted to see me, sir? SISKO It's about Ambassador Krajensky. I know Starfleet doesn't intend for this to be a combat mission, but just in case the Tzenkethi have other ideas, I want to make sure the ambassador is kept out of harm's way. EDDINGTON Yes, sir. I'll see to it that if hostilities do occur, the ambassador is escorted off the bridge. This is what Sisko wanted, but he knows it won't be as easy as Eddington makes it sound. SISKO He won't like it. EDDINGTON (smiles) I won't let that bother me. SISKO Very good, commander. That'll be all. Eddington starts to leave, then turns around. There's something on his mind. EDDINGTON Captain, I just want to say that I agree with what Chief O'Brien said. About your promotion. It's about time. SISKO I appreciate the sentiment. But you know, it doesn't really change anything. I have the assignment I want, the crew I want... the rank doesn't make much difference. EDDINGTON You'd be surprised. Let's face it... People don't enter Starfleet to become commanders... or admirals for that matter. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT ONE 12. 15 CONTINUED: (2) EDDINGTON (Cont'd) It's the Captain's Chair that everyone has their eye on. (a beat) That's what I wanted when I joined up. But you don't get to be a captain wearing a gold uniform. SISKO You could always transfer from Security to Command. EDDINGTON (smiles, dodging the question) Then who would protect the ambassador? SISKO (smiling, "touche") Dismissed, Mister Eddington. EDDINGTON Thank you, sir. Eddington EXITS. 16 EXT. SPACE - THE DEFIANT - STOCK (OPTICAL) At warp. SISKO (V.O.) Captain's log, Stardate 48962.5. We are twelve hours from the border. I haven't been in this area since the last Federation/Tzenkethi War. 17 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE Close on a monitor. SISKO (V.O.) Being here brings back a lot of memories... most of them bad. PAN over to find Sisko seated in the Captain's Chair. Dax, Kira, Odo and O'Brien are at their stations. The Ambassador and Eddington are observing. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT ONE 12A. 17 CONTINUED: ODO Captain, we're receiving a priority one distress signal from Barisa Prime. Audio only. SISKO Put it through. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT ONE 13. 17 CONTINUED: (2) An audio signal of a COLONIST comes up. He sounds panicky and his signal is broken up by static. Only the underlined words can be clearly heard. COLONIST'S COM VOICE (in mid-sentence) ... under heavy fire from Tzenkethi warships. I don't know how much longer we can hold out. Can anyone hear me, This is... Just then, an especially strong burst of static wipes out the signal. 18 OMITTED 19 ANGLE ON SISKO As he reacts. SISKO Constable... ODO We've lost contact. SISKO Try to re-establish. Odo works his panel, then... ODO It's no use, Captain. They're gone. And as Sisko and the crew react to the destruction of Barisa Prime, we... FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT TWO 14. ACT TWO FADE IN: 20 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE - CONTINUOUS Sisko thinks for a beat, then... SISKO (to Dax) Lieutenant, set a course for Barisa Prime, maximum warp. I want continual scans for Tzenkethi ships. (to Odo) Constable, contact Starfleet Command and tell them what's happened. Odo nods and immediately begins working his console. SISKO Major, what other starships are in this sector? KIRA (off console) The closest one is the Ulysses. They're studying protoplanetary masses in the Helaspont Nebula. SISKO That puts them... (thinks about it) Twenty hours away at maximum warp. (to Dax) Lieutenant, transmit a message to Captain Entebe on the Ulysses... Tell her... ODO (interrupting) Captain. Sisko turns to Odo. ODO I'm having trouble getting through to Starfleet Command. There seems to be a power fluctuation in the communications system. DAX I can't get a message out either. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT TWO 15. 20 CONTINUED: O'Brien goes over to the communications panel and checks the console. O'BRIEN The console is functioning normally. The problem must be in the transceiver assembly. SISKO I need that system back on-line, Chief. O'BRIEN I'll get right on it. (to Dax) Lieutenant, I could use some help. Dax looks to Sisko. SISKO Major, take the helm. KIRA Yes, sir. Kira takes over for Dax, who EXITS with O'Brien. 21 INT. JEFFERIES TUBE O'Brien and Dax are in the same section of Jefferies Tube where Bashir was working on the Medical Bay's power grid. O'Brien takes off a panel (a different one than Bashir was working on) and looks inside. O'BRIEN Lieutenant... what do you make of this? Dax joins him and looks inside the panel. 22 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) Inside the panel, there's a piece of technology that clearly doesn't belong there. It's different in color and design than the rest of the systems. Leads from the device are attached to a number of different locations inside the panel. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT TWO 16. As O'Brien and Dax watch, another cable snakes out of the device and clamps onto a system inside the bulkhead, like an octopus grasping with a tentacle. It's an eerie, disturbing sight. 23 INCLUDE DAX AND O'BRIEN As they react to this bizarre sight. O'BRIEN I've never seen anything like this. Dax scans the device with a tricorder. DAX It's spreading through the system like some kind of parasite. O'BRIEN It seems to be linked to key points within the transceiver assembly. We'd better get it out of there. Dax nods her agreement. O'Brien takes a tool and reaches into the panel. 24 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) As O'Brien reaches for the device, he is zapped by a forcefield. Unlike our normal security fields, this one hurts. The pain makes O'Brien drop the tool. O'BRIEN What the... Dax scans the panel. DAX (surprised) A forcefield. O'Brien thinks for a beat, then crawls down the Jefferies Tube. O'BRIEN Come on. DAX Where are you going? DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT TWO 17. 24 CONTINUED: O'BRIEN To check the other Command Systems. I've got a bad feeling about this. 25 EXT. SPACE (STOCK) (OPTICAL) The Defiant at warp. 26 INT. DEFIANT - ENGINE ROOM (OPTICAL) Sisko, Dax, and O'Brien are examining another open panel with a similar device to the one in the communications system. As they watch, it sends out a tentacle. SISKO You say these things are all over the ship. O'BRIEN (nods) They've attached themselves to the command and communication relays, the internal sensors, the transporter, the deflector shield grid, almost every critical system. SISKO Is there any way to get past the forcefields? O'BRIEN None that we've found. But we're still working on it. SISKO So I guess the question is, how did these devices get aboard? There's a beat as the three of them look at each other. They know the answer, but they're not eager to voice their suspicions. SISKO Or should I say... who placed them here? O'BRIEN I don't know who it was, but it definitely happened after we left the station. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT TWO 18. 26 CONTINUED: O'BRIEN I did a complete systems check before our departure, and they weren't here then. SISKO (grim) Then someone aboard this ship is a saboteur. As much as they want to, neither Dax nor O'Brien can deny the truth of Sisko's statement. DAX We've got forty-seven people on board. Theoretically, anyone of them could've planted these devices. Sisko notices that O'Brien looks disturbed by something. SISKO Chief? O'BRIEN It's nothing, sir. It's not even worth mentioning. SISKO You don't sound too sure about that. O'BRIEN Well, it's just... I did see someone crawling around one of the Jefferies Tubes the other day... SISKO Who? O'BRIEN (reluctantly) It was Julian. (quickly) He was connecting a medical console into the power grid. SISKO Which is right next to the communications relay. DAX Are you accusing Julian of sabotage? DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT TWO 19. 26 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO No one's accusing anyone of anything. (reluctantly) But I want to talk to Julian. DAX Wait. I think I've got a better idea. 27 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE Dax, Kira, Bashir, Odo, O'Brien, Krajensky and Eddington, are all gathered on the bridge, along with two bridge crew N.D.s. Sisko is addressing the group. SISKO This crew has been through a lot together. I'd trust any one of you with my life. But... after looking at the evidence, there's only one conclusion I can draw. Someone on this ship is guilty of sabotage. 28 NEW ANGLE As we pan across the faces of the crew. All of them are uncomfortable with this idea. They look at each other, not exactly with suspicion, but with a slight uneasiness. 29 ANGLE ON BASHIR Who looks concerned and serious about what he's hearing. 30 ANGLE ON EDDINGTON Who does not seem happy at all. We hold on him for a beat longer than anyone else. EDDINGTON With your permission, Captain, the Constable and I can begin questioning the crew immediately. ë DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT TWO 20. 30 CONTINUED: SISKO That won't be necessary. (turning the floor over to Dax) Lieutenant. 31 ANGLE ON DAX Who is carrying a tricorder. DAX We found one of the devices planted in the warp plasma conduit. Which means whoever put it there would've been exposed to trace amounts of tetryon particles. KRAJENSKY And those particles would still be detectable on the saboteur. O'BRIEN Yes. But not for much longer. They dissipate quickly. ODO So you're going to scan all the members of the crew for tetryon particles? SISKO Starting with the senior staff. DAX O'Brien and I already scanned positive, since we opened up the warp core controls during our investigation. EDDINGTON You realize, of course, that if no one else tests positive... O'BRIEN We'll be the prime suspects. I know. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT TWO 21. 32 ANGLE ON SISKO As he steps forward. SISKO We might as well get this started. Dax nods and scans Sisko. This takes a beat, during which the tension in the room rises. DAX (off tricorder) You're clean. SISKO I'm glad to hear it. KIRA Might as well do me next. Dax scans her as well. 33 OMITTED NEW ANGLE As everyone waits with anticipation. DAX You're okay, too. 34 ANGLE ON BASHIR Looking concerned as Dax moves to him next. DAX Julian? BASHIR (snapping out of it) Oh, of course. Bashir holds out his hands. As Dax begins to scan Bashir... 36 ANGLE ON EDDINGTON Who moves his hand back to rest on his phaser. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT TWO 22. 37 CLOSE ON BASHIR As Dax completes the scan. O'BRIEN (looking over Dax's shoulder) Nothing. BASHIR You sound relieved. O'BRIEN I am. After all, you were in that conduit the other day. 38 NEW ANGLE What happens next occurs very quickly as Bashir reacts to O'Brien's statement with a puzzled expression, Dax moves over to Ambassador Krajensky. BASHIR DAX I was never in any Ambassador, if you please. conduit. O'BRIEN KRAJENSKY Of course you were. (holding out his I saw you. hands) Certainly. BASHIR I don't know what... As Dax scans Krajensky, three things happen in rapid succession: 39 INCLUDE THE TRICORDER First the tricorder makes a fast beeping sound, and almost at the same time... 40 DAX Looks up at Krajensky in sudden understanding as virtually simultaneously... 41 KRAJENSKY (OPTICAL) smiles and MORPHS EXPLOSIVELY knocking aside Kira and one of the N.D.s and transforming into a flailing column of Shape-shifter goo. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT TWO 23. 41 CONTINUED: Before anyone can react, Krajensky stretches out, slams open an access hatch in the ceiling, and sucks himself into a conduit. 42 NEW ANGLE And as everyone reacts in shock and surprise. KIRA It's a changeling. She looks at Odo, who is clearly disturbed by seeing one of his people on the Defiant. Hold on Odo for a beat, then... FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT THREE 24. ACT THREE FADE IN: 43 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE - CONTINUOUS Suddenly, the lights on the bridge dim noticeably. Sisko reacts to the lights. Kira checks tactical. SISKO We've cloaked. As everyone else reacts, Sisko is instantly in action. SISKO (to Dax) Lieutenant, bring the ship out of warp. Full stop. Now. Dax goes immediately to comply. SISKO (to Odo and Eddington) Constable, Commander, deploy security teams immediately. I want that changeling found before he can do any more damage. EDDINGTON Yes, sir. Odo and Eddington EXIT. Dax works hurriedly at the helm. She looks worried. DAX Captain. Sisko turns to Dax. DAX The helm isn't responding. We're still at warp. O'Brien works the engineering console. O'BRIEN I can't disengage the cloaking device. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT THREE 25. 43 CONTINUED: KIRA (alarmed) The weapons array has activated. The phaser banks are charging and we've got photon torpedoes on-line and ready to launch. DAX The ship's no longer under our control. 44 OMITTED 45 CLOSE ON SISKO As he reacts. He's not surprised, but he's deeply concerned by the implications. 46 INT. MESS HALL Gathered in the room are Sisko, Kira, Bashir, Odo and Eddington. Sisko is the focus of the meeting as the senior officers update him on the situation. EDDINGTON Our security teams have gone over every centimeter of the ship... checked every piece of cargo... questioned every crewmember. We still haven't been able to find the changeling. SISKO Is there any way he could've been transported off the ship? EDDINGTON At warp? It's unlikely. But with Dominion technology... I suppose it's possible. ODO (with certainty) He's still here. There's a beat of silence as Sisko, Kira, Bashir and Eddington react to Odo. They know he's right. ODO He won't leave until he's completed his mission. BASHIR Which is? DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT THREE 26. 46 CONTINUED: SISKO It looks like the Dominion is hoping to start a war between the Federation and the Tzenkethi. KIRA If you ask me, the Tzenkethi are doing a pretty good job of that all by themselves. SISKO Not necessarily. The transmission we saw from Barisa Prime could've been faked using that device we found implanted in the communications relay. This is disturbing news for everyone. They all feel exposed and vulnerable, not able to trust anything about their situation. SISKO In fact, our entire mission could've been engineered by the Dominion. (off reactions) Think about it. We've been all over this ship, and we haven't seen a trace of the real Ambassador Krajensky... or his remains. Eddington sees what Sisko's getting at. EDDINGTON Which means he was probably replaced before we left the station. ODO Maybe the real ambassador never came to Deep Space Nine at all. BASHIR Then anything Ambassador Krajensky told us could be a lie. The Tzenkethi coup d'etat, the increased tension along the border, the threat of an attack... Sisko sees that the situation is pretty dire. SISKO And now here we are, cloaked, armed for battle, and headed into Tzenkethi territory. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT THREE 26. 46 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO (determined) If we don't stop this ship before we reach the border, we may wind up causing a war instead of preventing one. ODO Which is no doubt what my people are hoping for. A war between the Tzenkethi and the Federation would destabilize the Alpha Quadrant, and make it that much easier for the Dominion to move in. There's a growing sense of tension in the room. Even though they outnumber the Shape-shifter fifty to one, there's a feeling that the deck is stacked against them. EDDINGTON I wish the internal sensors were on- line. It'd make it a lot easier to track down the changeling. ODO I'm not sure sensors would help. If you scan me when I'm a rock, you'd detect a rock. I may not be able to duplicate a humanoid perfectly, but I'm guessing he can. BASHIR (confirming) When we scanned "Ambassador Krajensky" for tetryon particles, he registered as human. KIRA Then right now the changeling could be anything or anyone on this ship. 47 NEW ANGLE As we pan across the faces of the senior staff. No one wants to think that one of their friends and colleagues may be the Shape-shifter, but they can't deny the possibility. Sisko knows he must take decisive action. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT THREE 28. 47 CONTINUED: SISKO We have to try to narrow his options... (to Odo, an order) Confine all nonessential personnel to quarters and seal them in with forcefields. No one likes this solution, but they don't have much of a choice. Odo nods and gets up. SISKO (to Bashir) Doctor, I want you to review those tricorder readings. See if you can find anything that will help us find that changeling. BASHIR I'll get right on it. SISKO (to Bashir) Take some security with you. From here on, no one should be left alone. Bashir nods. He and Odo EXIT. SISKO (to all) We have seven hours before we enter Tzenkethi space. I want that changeling found before then. EDDINGTON That won't be easy. (concerned) Let's face it, no matter how many precautions we take, he could replace any one of us... and we won't know it until it's too late. 48 CLOSE ON SISKO AND KIRA They don't have an answer for that, and they're just as concerned as Eddington. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT THREE 29. 49 INT. DEFIANT - CORRIDOR (OPTICAL) Odo is watching as a three red-shirted crewmembers ENTER a crew cabin. ODO Thank you for your cooperation. Hopefully this will be over soon and you can return to duty. The door closes and Odo nods to a Security Officer who activates a forcefield in the doorway. Odo turns to a group of officers who are waiting for him. ODO All right. Let's go. Odo begins leading the other crewmembers to their quarters. 50 INT. DEFIANT - ANOTHER CORRIDOR Bashir and a Security Officer are walking along the corridor. They stop before a door. (This is the entrance to the medical bay and bears the appropriate insignia, but we don't see inside.) BASHIR This may take a while. He EXITS into the medical bay. The Security Officer walks in behind him and the camera lingers on his face just long enough to make us suspicious. 51 INT. DEFIANT - YET ANOTHER CORRIDOR Eddington and Odo are distributing hand phasers from a weapons locker to a group of four Security Officers (one a BOLIAN) and an engineer (all wearing gold uniforms.) EDDINGTON Keep your phasers on stun. And stay calm. I don't want anyone getting nervous and shooting one of us by mistake. They continue handing out the phasers. Once they're done, Eddington takes one for himself. EDDINGTON (to Odo, re: phasers) You sure I can't interest you in one of these? DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT THREE 30. 51 CONTINUED: ODO I don't use them. Besides, in the history of my people, no Changeling has ever harmed another. I'd hate to be the first. EDDINGTON Apparently that changeling doesn't feel the same way. If we don't stop him, no one on board will escape unharmed. Including you. Odo doesn't have an immediate reply. He's clearly bothered by the fact that a fellow changeling would callously endanger his life. ODO You may be right. But I've been a security officer for most of my humanoid existence. And in all that time, I've never found it necessary to fire a weapon or take a life. I don't intend to start now. Eddington nods. He can't argue with that. Just then... O'BRIEN'S COM VOICE (panicky) This is O'Brien. I need a security team in the engine room immediately. And as Odo and Eddington move out... 52 INT. ENGINE ROOM Odo, Eddington and two Security Officers rush in, followed almost immediately by Bashir with a third Security Officer. O'Brien is tending to Dax, who's sprawled out on the floor, unconscious. O'BRIEN It must've been the changeling. I went down the hall to get an Interphasic Compensator. I heard a noise and when I came back... O'Brien looks down guiltily at Dax. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT THREE 31. 53 NEW ANGLE Sharp eyes might notice that Bashir's escort is not the same officer we saw with him before. Bashir examines Dax, scanning her with a medical tricorder. He injects her with a hypospray. BASHIR She's got a severe concussion. I'd better get her back to the medical bay. (to two Security Officers) Give me a hand. As the first two Security Officers start to lift Dax... 54 CLOSE ON O'BRIEN He's worried, but he knows he has to keep working. So does Odo. ODO (to the third Security Officer) Stay here with the chief. The officer nods. O'Brien hits his combadge. O'BRIEN (to com) Damage control team report to the Engine Room. And as Odo and Eddington EXIT, hold on O'Brien, who stares impassively at the sabotaged systems. CUT TO: 55 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE Bashir is updating Sisko and Kira. Armed Security Officers stand at the back of the bridge. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT THREE 32. 55 CONTINUED: BASHIR Dax is still unconscious. I've given her cortical analeptics to stabilize her condition. She should be all right in a day or two, but until then... SISKO Is there any way to speed up the process? BASHIR (after a beat) I could use a neural stimulator but it might cause irreversible brain damage. I don't recommend it. This isn't what Sisko was hoping to hear, but he knows Bashir's done his best. SISKO (nods) Then Chief O'Brien's going to have to regain control of the ship without her. BASHIR I'm afraid so. (a beat) I'd better get back to my patient. Bashir EXITS, followed by a Security Officer. 56 ANGLE ON SISKO AND KIRA Kira does not look happy. KIRA Taking out Dax makes O'Brien's job a lot harder. Sisko thinks about it for a beat. He has an idea, all right. But it's not one he's particularly enthralled with. SISKO (determined) One thing's for sure, we're not going to start a war with the Tzenkethi. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT THREE 32A. 56 CONTINUED: SISKO If O'Brien can't regain control before we cross the border... I'll have no choice but to destroy the Defiant. And as Kira reacts to this grim decision... FADE OUT. END OF ACT THREE DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 33. ACT FOUR FADE IN: 57 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE Sisko is addressing Kira, Odo, Eddington and a group of N.D.s. SISKO Our objective is simple. Find the changeling and stop him from doing any more damage. (a beat) We'll break up into two-person teams. Each team will be equipped with phaser rifles. Sisko indicates a stack of phaser rifles. EDDINGTON We've reconfigured the rifles to fire an expanding energy pulse. ODO The phasers are set low enough to avoid damaging equipment... but high enough to affect the changeling. SISKO The changeling could be hiding anywhere. He could look like anything. So we're going to have to systematically sweep the ship with phaser fire. Every corridor, every conduit. If he's out there, we're going to find him. (a beat) Any questions? One of the Security Officers, a BOLIAN, nods. BOLIAN What if the changeling's not out there? What if he's one of us? Though the Bolian's the one who said it, clearly everyone's been thinking the same thing. The crewmembers eye each other suspiciously. They know there's no way to tell the changeling from the person it's imitating. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 34. 58 CLOSE ON SISKO He knows it too, but he's determined to keep the crew together and working toward a solution. SISKO That's why everyone will be in teams. Keep your partner in sight at all times. KIRA And if we see anyone without a partner? SISKO Escort them to the brig. We don't want to take any chances. Kira nods. That's good enough for her. But Sisko knows the tension's still getting to her, and to the rest of the crew. SISKO (picks up a phaser rifle) Let's go. The group begins breaking up into two-person teams. 59 INT. DEFIANT - CORRIDOR (OPTICAL) Close on Kira and the Bolian, looking around the corridor, both carrying phaser rifles. The Bolian is working on removing an access plate to a Jefferies tube. The halls of the ship are empty and silent, except for the omnipresent hum of the engines. With the cloaking device engaged, the corridors are dark and full of shadows. Kira looks around, scanning the corridor, knowing that anything she sees could be the changeling. Her old terrorist instincts, the feeling of being the hunter and the hunted at the same time, are all coming back to her. She looks grim and determined, a professional with a job to do. The Bolian removes the access plate. BOLIAN Ready. Kira stoops down and fires the phaser rifle into the tube. The beam is different from the usual needle-like laser. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 34A. 59 CONTINUED: It's an expanding ball of energy which grows larger as it moves, then dissipates. After a burst with the phaser, Kira nods toward the tube. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 35. 59 CONTINUED: (2) KIRA All right... let's go. The Bolian hesitates. He doesn't like the idea of turning his back on Kira. For all he knows, she's the Shape-shifter. BOLIAN After you. KIRA Don't you trust me? BOLIAN No. I don't. KIRA (smiles) I know just how you feel. But Kira refuses to allow her concerns to keep her from doing her job. KIRA Follow me. She disappears into the tube. The Bolian follows. 60 INT. JEFFERIES TUBE (OPTICAL) Eddington and Odo are moving through another tube. Eddington fires his modified phaser rifle. Nothing happens. Eddington and Odo stare into the shadowy depths of the tube, as if waiting for the changeling to jump out at them. The tube is cramped and uncomfortable. Eddington is sweating. EDDINGTON Don't you ever sweat? ODO No, I don't. (sees that Eddington is) It's the modified phaser beam. It's heating up the air. EDDINGTON (nods, he knows) You know, this'd be a lot easier if we knew where he was hiding. Where would you be if you were him? DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 36. 60 CONTINUED: ODO I couldn't say. I'm not him. EDDINGTON He is one of your people. Can't you put yourself in his place... try to anticipate his next move? ODO I've thought about it... but the truth is... I don't understand my people all that well. Eddington examines the tube ahead of him, knowing that the changeling could appear at any moment. EDDINGTON That's too bad. ODO Yes, it is. EDDINGTON For all of us. Eddington and Odo move down the tube. 61 INT. DEFIANT - ANOTHER JEFFERIES TUBE (OPTICAL) Sisko and another Security Officer pick their way carefully down yet another of the Defiant's cramped, dark maintenance conduits. They reach a ladder, which leads deeper into the bowels of the ship. Sisko "sterilizes" the ladder with his modified phaser rifle, then slings the rifle strap over his shoulder. SISKO Watch my back. 62 NEW ANGLE As Sisko climbs down the ladder. He moves slowly, keeping one hand on the trigger of the phaser rifle. It's difficult to keep the phaser trained on the bottom of the ladder while descending, but Sisko's doing his best. In the middle of the ladder, Sisko reaches a four-way intersection. A tube leads off both to Sisko's right and left, and the ladder continues down to a lower deck. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 37. 62 CONTINUED: Sisko stops just above the intersection. He sizes up the side passageways, then signals for the Security Officer to join him. 63 CLOSE ON SISKO As he waits, constantly shifting his aim between the three branching tunnels, while the Security Officer makes his way down the ladder. 64 NEW ANGLE After a tense wait, the Security Officer finally reaches Sisko. Sisko indicates that the Security Officer should take the right tunnel. SISKO (quietly) On three. The Security Officer nods. Sisko holds up one finger, then two, then three. SISKO Now. Simultaneous, Sisko swings down to fire into one passageway, and the Security Officer moves to fire into the other. 65 NEW ANGLE - CLOSE ON THE SECURITY OFFICER But as the Security Officer swings his phaser rifle into position and is about to fire... 66 NEW ANGLE - SECURITY OFFICER'S P.O.V. (OPTICAL) A section of the passageway suddenly MORPHS, extending a pseudopod and slamming the officer into a bulkhead. 67 ANGLE ON SISKO (OPTICAL) As he turns in response to the Security Officer's choked cry. But before Sisko can level his rifle at the Changeling, the Changeling, now a writhing mass of protoplasm, springs at Sisko from the tunnel, smashing him back against the ladder, and shoots down the Jefferies tube. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 38. 68 NEW ANGLE As Sisko, who's bleeding from a cut on his hand, regains his balance and hits his combadge. SISKO This is Sisko. The changeling's in Jefferies Tube Seven-A heading toward the lower decks. Sisko checks the pulse of the Security Officer. There isn't one. Sisko reacts. Now he's even more determined than ever to get the changeling. SISKO I'm in pursuit. 69 INT. CORRIDOR A quick cut of Eddington and Odo running on their way toward the lower decks. 70 INT. ANOTHER CORRIDOR Two Security Officers move to help Sisko. 71 INT. JEFFERIES TUBE Sisko reaches a dead end, and kicks out the access panel. 72 INT. CORRIDOR (OPTICAL) As Sisko emerges, a phaser beam narrowly misses him. Sisko looks up and sees... 73 NEW ANGLE The Bolian aiming his phaser rifle past Sisko down the corridor. BOLIAN The changeling... he's right over there. Sisko realizes the Bolian is aiming at someone further down the corridor. He turns and sees that it's... DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 39. 74 KIRA Who's near a bend in the corridor. KIRA Put the phaser down. It's me... Kira. (to Sisko) We were on our way to meet up with you and we got separated for a few seconds. The next thing I know, he opened fire.. BOLIAN You can't fool me. You're the changeling. I saw you come out of that hatch and go around the corner. Kira steps closer to Sisko and the Bolian. KIRA I didn't see anyone. Maybe he morphed into the ventilation system. (growing suspicious) Or maybe he didn't. For all we know, you could be the changeling. Kira continues approaching Sisko and the Bolian. BOLIAN Keep back. Sisko looks from Kira to the Bolian, not sure whether he can trust either one of them. SISKO (an order) Both of you put your weapons down. 75 CLOSE ON THE BOLIAN As he looks from Kira to Sisko. He's in over his head. For all he knows, Sisko could be the Shape-shifter. BOLIAN I can't do that, Captain. KIRA (to the Bolian) You heard him... But as Kira steps forward, the Bolian suddenly takes aim at Kira and just as he's about to fire... DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 40. 76 NEW ANGLE We hear the sound of a morph and a changeling's hand grabs his phaser rifle and jerks it away. Sisko, Kira, and the Bolian turn just in time to see... 77 ODO Tosses aside the rifle with one hand and decks the Bolian with the other. Eddington jogs up the corridor to join the group. He looks down and sees one of his Security Officers lying on the ground. EDDINGTON What happened? 78 CLOSE ON SISKO As he looks from Kira to Odo to Eddington to the unconscious Bolian. SISKO (to Odo) How long have you two been apart? Odo looks over at Eddington and they both realize what Sisko's getting at. ODO (chagrined) At least a minute. SISKO Then we've got a problem. Any of us could be the changeling. (to Odo) You, Kira, Eddington... even me. 79 CLOSE ON ODO He'd like to say otherwise, but he can't. He knows Sisko's right... or almost right. Something near Sisko's foot catches his eye. ODO Not you. SISKO What do you mean? ODO You're bleeding. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT FOUR 41. 79 CONTINUED: SISKO (not following) I cut my hand when the Changeling attacked me. EDDINGTON (to Odo) What are you getting at? 80 NEW ANGLE Odo indicates a spot on the floor by Sisko's feet. Several small flecks of blood are visible on the deck. ODO When blood leaves a humanoid body... it's still blood. But when any part of me separates from my body... KIRA (finishing for him) It reverts back to a gelatinous state. Kira looks up at Sisko and they lock eyes. They're both clearly thinking the same thing. Sisko hits his combadge. SISKO (to com) Sisko to Bashir. BASHIR'S COM VOICE This is Bashir. SISKO Doctor, meet us in the Mess Hall immediately. And off this... CUT TO: 81 INT. MESS HALL Bashir draws blood from the Bolian using a high-tech syringe. Sisko, Kira, Odo, and Eddington watch the procedure. BASHIR This should only take a second. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 42. 81 CONTINUED: Bashir injects the Bolian's blood (it's blue) into a clear glass vial, then hands it to Sisko. Sisko holds the vial up to the light and examines it. The blood remains blue. 82 ANGLE ON THE BOLIAN Looking relieved. BOLIAN Satisfied? Sisko puts the vial into the rack. SISKO So far. BASHIR Who's next? KIRA I'll go. Bashir draws some blood from Kira, drips it into a vial, holds it up to the light, and shakes it a little. It stays red. BASHIR I'd say the major is exactly who she appears to be. KIRA (to the Bolian) Try not to look so surprised. Bashir places the vial in the replicator and we hear it activate and dispose of the vial. BASHIR (to Eddington and Sisko) There doesn't seem to be much of a point in obtaining a sample from the Constable, so I guess that leaves the three of us. Eddington steps forward. EDDINGTON Let's get this over with. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 43. 82 CONTINUED: Bashir repeats the same procedure we saw above. He draws the blood, takes the syringe over to the rack of vials, selects a vial (although he blocks the rack of vials for a second as he does so), drips in the blood, and holds it up to the light. 83 CLOSE ON THE VIAL (OPTICAL) But this time, after a few seconds, the blood MORPHS into orange goo. 84 NEW ANGLE As everyone reacts, and Kira levels her rifle at Eddington. KIRA I think you'd better come with me. 85 CLOSE ON EDDINGTON As he reacts to the rifle. He looks stunned. 86 INT. DEFIANT - CORRIDOR Sisko, Kira, Odo and Bashir escort Eddington down a corridor. EDDINGTON Look, this is ridiculous. I'm not the changeling. If I were, don't you think I'd put up a little more of a fight? They reach a section of corridor with three doors. Odo opens one of them. ODO Inside. EDDINGTON You're making a mistake. KIRA Do as he says. Eddington sees it's no use arguing, and is about to ENTER the room, when... DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FOUR 44. 87 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) One of the other doors shorts out explosively and opens. Another Bashir, trapped inside the room, slams his fist into the security field. (This Bashir's combadge is missing.) BASHIR (exasperated) Would someone please get me out of here? 88 ANOTHER ANGLE (OPTICAL) All eyes turn from the Bashir behind the forcefield to the Bashir in the hallway, who looks startled, then MORPHS, stretching out and rising rapidly through a vent in the ceiling. 88A NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) Sisko fires his phaser but the changeling's already gone. 89 ANGLE ON ODO (OPTICAL) As he steps forward and starts to MORPH in pursuit of the changeling. 89A CLOSE ON SISKO As Odo morphs away. COM VOICE Bridge to Captain Sisko. SISKO Sisko here. As he talks, Sisko picks up the changeling's discarded combadge. COM VOICE Captain... we're entering Tzenkethi space. And as Sisko, Kira, Eddington, and the real Bashir react to this news... 90 OMITTED FADE OUT. END OF ACT FOUR DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FIVE 45. ACT FIVE FADE IN: 91 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE Sisko takes his seat in the Captain's Chair. Kira takes over at the helm. Eddington positions himself at tactical. SISKO Any sign of Tzenkethi ships? EDDINGTON Sensors aren't picking up any warp signatures. KIRA We've altered course. Our new heading is zero-one-five mark four-seven. (consults readout) We're headed directly for the Tzenkethi settlement on M'kemas Three. SISKO How long before we're in weapons range of the settlement? KIRA Twelve minutes. There's a beat. All eyes are on Sisko. Everyone knows he can't let the Defiant fire on an unsuspecting civilian population. Sisko places his hand on a scan pad on one of the consoles. SISKO Computer, this is Captain Benjamin Sisko. Initiate auto-destruct sequence. Authorization Sisko Alpha One Alpha. COMPUTER VOICE Identity confirmed. Additional authorization required. Kira places her hand on the scanner. KIRA This is First Officer Kira Nerys. Auto-destruct authorization Kira Beta Two Beta. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FIVE 46. 91 CONTINUED: COMPUTER VOICE Identity confirmed. Auto-destruct sequence armed. SISKO Set the countdown for ten minutes from my mark. Authorization Sisko One-Five Destruct. (beat) Mark. Red Alert lights come on. They should be on in all locations for the duration of the auto-destruct sequence. COMPUTER VOICE Sequence initiated. Auto-destruct in nine minutes, fifty seconds. 92 NEW ANGLE As we pan across the faces of the bridge crew. All of them fully aware that unless they can stop the ship, they'll all die in less than ten minutes. 93 CLOSE ON SISKO Looking grim. 94 INT. DEFIANT - ENGINE ROOM O'Brien and an N.D. Engineer are setting up a device in the middle of the engine room. O'Brien's combadge chirps. SISKO'S COM VOICE Sisko to O'Brien. O'BRIEN O'Brien here. 95 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE Sisko's in the Captain's Chair. SISKO (to com) I could use some good news right now, Chief. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - REV. 04/10/95 - ACT FIVE 47. 96 INT. DEFIANT - ENGINE ROOM O'Brien continues working. Intercut as necessary with the Bridge. O'BRIEN How about this... I think I may be able to shut down the changeling's forcefields and gain access to the sabotaged systems. The only problem is, there's a chance we'll lose our own forcefields, too. COMPUTER VOICE Auto-destruct in seven minutes. SISKO'S COM VOICE Just tell me how long it will take. O'BRIEN I guess it'll have to be less than seven minutes. 97 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE As Sisko reacts to O'Brien's estimate. SISKO That'd be my suggestion. Sisko out. As Sisko cuts of the transmission, Bashir ENTERS the Bridge. EDDINGTON (seeing him) Doctor... how's Lieutenant Dax? Bashir looks grim. BASHIR Still unconscious. The changeling gave her enough sedatives to keep her under for days. I've filtered most of them out of her system, but she'll be out for at least another few hours. (a beat) I wish I could do more. SISKO You've done all you can, Doctor. Now it's up to Chief O'Brien. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FIVE 48. 98 NEW ANGLE As we pan across the faces of Sisko, Kira, Bashir and Eddington, all of them tense as they wait for further word from O'Brien. 99 INT. DEFIANT - ENGINE ROOM O'Brien and the Engineer work at the device he's using to override the forcefields. COMPUTER VOICE Auto-destruct in six minutes. O'Brien tries to act like there's no pressure from the countdown. O'BRIEN All right, we're almost there. Look, when we set off this device there's a possibility we'll lose the protective field around the warp core. If that happens, this room's going to heat up real fast. So give the warp core a wide berth or you'll get a dose of radiation poisoning that even Bashir can't cure. The Engineer nods. Just then... 100 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) A puddle of protoplasm emerges from a grating and MORPHS into Odo. For reasons that will become clear, let's call him... FIRST ODO (to O'Brien) Where's the changeling? I lost him in the conduits. O'BRIEN We haven't seen him. But almost simultaneously... 101 ANOTHER PROTOPLASMIC MASS (OPTICAL) slides out of a different grating. The Engineer draws his phaser as the second protoplasmic mass also shape-shifts into ODO. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FIVE 48A. 101 CONTINUED: SECOND ODO Wait... it's me. Odo. O'BRIEN You don't say. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FIVE 49. 101 CONTINUED: (2) The Engineer shifts his aim from one Odo to the next, not sure which to shoot. O'Brien draws his own phaser. 102 CLOSE ON O'BRIEN (OPTICAL) As he tries to figure out what to do. SECOND ODO Chief, remember the last time we went kayaking in the holosuites... You had lamb stew for lunch. O'Brien looks suspiciously at the First Odo. O'BRIEN That's right... FIRST ODO But you forgot to bring a fork. (a beat) Anyone could've gotten that information. COMPUTER VOICE Auto-destruct in five minutes. SECOND ODO You'd better make a decision. We're running out of time. O'Brien isn't sure who to believe and knows he doesn't have time to figure it out. He puts away his phaser and goes to a console and begins inputting commands. O'BRIEN I've got more important things to do than play choose the changeling. (to the Engineer) Keep a phaser on both of them. The Engineer keeps a phaser trained on the Shape-shifters. 103 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) As the two Odo's stare at each other for a beat, each waiting for the other to make the first move. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FIVE 50. 104 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE Sisko, Kira, and Eddington at their stations. KIRA The shuttlebay doors are sealed and the evacuation pods are locked down. We have no way out. EDDINGTON Weapons are fully charged and ready to fire. Tactical systems are programming an attack run on the Tzenkethi settlement. 105 CLOSE ON SISKO He knows they're running out of time. 106 INT. DEFIANT - ENGINE ROOM The two Odo's continue to face off and O'Brien continues working at the console. There's silence in the room, the tension building, until, finally the Second Odo can't keep quiet any longer. SECOND ODO (evenly) Chief, what are you doing? Although O'Brien knows that either Odo could reach him in seconds, he remains poker faced and continues unflappably with his work. COMPUTER VOICE Auto-destruct in four minutes. O'BRIEN You'll see. There's a long beat as O'Brien continues to work, then... 107 CLOSE ON O'BRIEN As he hits one more control with grim satisfaction. O'BRIEN (to the Engineer, urgent) Now. 108 CLOSE ON THE ENGINEER (OPTICAL) Who hits a control on the device he and O'Brien constructed. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FIVE 51. 108 CONTINUED: The device goes off, shorting out all the forcefields protecting the Founder's sabotage. There's also a massive forcefield FRITZ OUT around the warp core. Clarions sound. COMPUTER VOICE Warning. The protective field around the warp core has been breached. The engine room will be sealed in ten seconds. Evacuate immediately. But O'Brien isn't interested in evacuating. He immediately resumes working. O'BRIEN (to the Engineer, an order) Shut down the main power grid. But before the Engineer can respond... 109 THE SECOND ODO (OPTICAL) MORPHS into a recognizably different changeling, of the same basic height and weight as Ambassador Krajensky. He slams the Engineer in the head, then turns and strikes O'Brien. O'Brien collapses to the ground and the doors to Engineering slam shut. COMPUTER VOICE Engine Room sealed. The real Odo grabs the changeling and pulls him away from O'Brien. ODO No. 110 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) But as Odo pulls the Changeling back and spins him around, the Changelings arm MORPHS into its gelatinous state and the Changeling punches Odo in the stomach, sinking the gelatinous arm deep into Odo's belly. Odo looks down in shock at the arm sticking out of his body. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FIVE 52. 110 CONTINUED: CHANGELING Why are you protecting these solids? Odo tries to speak, but can't. Whatever the changeling is doing to him, it's not good. CHANGELING You don't belong with them. As he speaks, we can tell the changeling is manipulating Odo's body in some way through their physical link. 111 CLOSE ON ODO (OPTICAL) Odo's abdomen begins to lose its cohesion and melt into liquid. CHANGELING You belong with us. As Odo tries to resist whatever the changeling is doing to him, his body shifts back and forth between liquid and solid states. COMPUTER VOICE Auto-destruct in three minutes. CHANGELING Let go. Don't you see? You've lost. It's too late for you to help them... but it's not too late to help yourself. We hold on Odo for a beat, his whole body roiling with pain. Spasmodic eruptions of goo bubble up out of his upper body. CHANGELING Link with me, Odo. We can escape together. And for just a moment, it looks like Odo is going to give in. But then his expression hardens. He looks more determined than ever. 112 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) Odo lifts up his hands and grips the Shape-shifter by the shoulders. DEEP SPACE: "The Adversary" - 04/07/95 - ACT FIVE 53. 112 CONTINUED: ODO I don't think so. Then, in the same instant, Odo solidifies back into his fully humanoid form, and shoves his hands down into the changeling's shoulders. 113 CLOSE ON THE CHANGELING (OPTICAL) Who's shocked to see his body liquify around Odo's hands. With a look of distress and confusion, the changeling reverts completely to his gelatinous shape. Odo swings him around trying to hurl the changeling away from him. But instead they lose their balance and... 114 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) The changeling falls back against the unshielded warp core, dragging Odo behind him. A shock of energy from the core blasts the changeling and, through him, strikes Odo. The force of the blast propels Odo away from the core. 115 CLOSE ON ODO As he reacts in horror to what has just happened, then glances over at O'Brien. 116 NEW ANGLE As O'Brien struggles to regain his feet.
