Odo and I are returning to Deep Space Nine after reviewing security procedures at Prophet's Landing, the Bajoran Colony closest to the Cardassian Border. 2 INT. MEKONG KIRA and ODO are at the controls of the Mekong. KIRA Those orbital sensor platforms should give the colonists plenty of advanced warning in case the Cardassians ever decide to violate the new treaty. ODO (distracted) Hopefully. KIRA How did your meeting with Security Chief Bemar go? ODO Fine. Odo seems preoccupied and maybe a little grumpy. KIRA (joking) I assume he was properly impressed by the depth of your expertise. Odo just harumphs. Kira studies Odo for a beat, wondering why he's not making any effort to keep up his end of the conversation. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - TEASER 2. 2 CONTINUED: KIRA Odo, is something bothering you? ODO What makes you say that? KIRA For one thing, you haven't said more than five words to me since we left Prophet's Landing. Odo harumphs again. KIRA Look, if I've done something to offend you I wish you'd tell me what it is. Odo looks at her for a beat. For a second it seems like he's going to open up, but then he thinks better of it. ODO It's nothing. KIRA No. It's something. So you might as well talk about it. It might make you feel better. Odo harumphs again. KIRA Nevermind. Forget I asked. There's an awkward silence, then... ODO It's not important. KIRA Whatever you say. ODO It's certainly not worth making an issue about. KIRA I'm glad to hear it. ODO It's just... when Governor Avesta invited us to dinner at his house... 54:[1,#b] STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - TEASER 3. 2 CONTINUED: (2) KIRA Go on. ODO You said no. KIRA (still not getting it) And? ODO (uncomfortable) You never bothered to ask me if I wanted to go. Kira looks at Odo. She can't believe that that's what's troubling him. KIRA You wanted to go to dinner at the governor's house? ODO Not particularly. KIRA Then what's the problem? ODO The problem is... you never asked what I wanted. KIRA I'm sorry... I just thought that you wouldn't want to go. ODO How could you know for certain if you never asked? KIRA Odo... you don't eat! (beat) Besides, you hate socializing with people you don't know. ODO That's beside the point. I would've liked to have been consulted, that's all. KIRA You're right. (joking) Next time we're invited to dinner, I'll let you be the one to say no. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - TEASER 4. 2 CONTINUED: (3) ODO I'd appreciate that. Kira can't help but smile. Suddenly, the moment is broken by a signal from the control panel. KIRA (off readouts) Hold on, I'm picking up a wide band subspace transmission from a Lissepian supply ship. They were just attacked by a Maquis interceptor. Odo quickly consults the runabout controls. ODO Long range sensors are detecting a modified Peregrine Class courier ship, lightly armed, one man crew, bearing two-six-eight mark three-oh- one. KIRA The Maquis use Peregrine Class courier ships. (off Odo's nod) The Lissepians didn't sustain any serious damage. I'm going after him. ODO Right. And as Kira works the controls... 3 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) The Mekong goes to warp. FADE OUT. END OF TEASER STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT ONE 5. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes) 4 INT. COMMANDER'S OFFICE SISKO is working at his desk, retrieving information from a PADD. O'BRIEN'S COM VOICE O'Brien to Sisko. SISKO Go ahead. O'BRIEN'S COM VOICE Commander, there's... someone here to see you. SISKO Who is it? 5 INT. OPS Intercut as necessary. O'BRIEN'S at his station. He looks down at Sisko's visitor. O'BRIEN (can't believe it himself) It's... Nog, sir. NOG looks up at O'Brien and smiles nervously. He's carrying a small bundle wrapped in a bar rag. SISKO'S COM VOICE (surprised) Nog. NOG Tell him it's urgent. O'BRIEN (dubious) He says it's urgent. SISKO'S COM VOICE (resigned) Send him in. NOG (self satisfied) I told you he'd see me. Nog marches into... STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT ONE 6. 6 INT. COMMANDER'S OFFICE Where he finds Sisko at his desk. NOG Commander, first let me express my most sincere thanks for allowing me to speak with you. He sticks out his hand for Sisko to shake. After a beat, Sisko takes it and shakes it. SISKO You're welcome. Now what's this all about? NOG I wanted to give you... this. Nog places the bundle on Sisko's desk. Sisko looks at the bundle, and then looks at Nog. NOG Open it. Sisko looks at Nog for a beat, then cautiously unwraps the bundle. It's a large stack of latinum. SISKO What's this? NOG It's latinum. SISKO I know it's latinum. Why are you giving it to me? NOG Yesterday I completed the Ferengi Attainment Ceremony. (with pride) I'm an adult. SISKO Congratulations. NOG Thank you. SISKO (re: the latinum) But that still doesn't explain this. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT ONE 7. 6 CONTINUED: NOG It's my life's savings. According to Ferengi Bylaws, section one-oh- five, subparagraph ten, upon reaching adulthood, Ferengi males must purchase an apprenticeship from a suitable role model. (a beat) I choose you. SISKO You want to be my apprentice? NOG That's right. I want to be the first Ferengi in Starfleet. Now who do I see about getting a uniform? SISKO Nog, I'm afraid it doesn't work that way. We don't just give Starfleet uniforms to anyone. Nog was half expecting this. NOG I understand. He reaches into his coat and pulls out two more handfuls of latinum and plops them on the desk. NOG But a man of your stature could undoubtedly arrange something. One day, I plan on being a commander just like you. SISKO Nog, if you want to be a Starfleet Officer, you have to attend the Academy. NOG (thinks about it for a beat) All right. Where do I sign up? SISKO It's not that simple. As a non- Federation citizen, you need a letter of reference from a command level officer before you can even take the entrance exam. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT ONE 8. 6 CONTINUED: (2) NOG A command level officer? You mean, like you? SISKO Yes. Like me. NOG Perfect. Is it a form letter or would you like me to help you write it? SISKO Tell me Nog... why do you want to join Starfleet? Why not serve aboard a Ferengi ship? NOG Are you saying that, as a Ferengi, I'm not good enough to join Starfleet? SISKO Not at all. NOG Then you'll write the letter. SISKO I'll think about it. NOG Thank you, Commander. I know you'll make the right decision. He sticks out his hand for Sisko to shake again, and Sisko shakes it. Nog turns to leave. SISKO Hold on. Nog stops and turns back. SISKO (re: the latinum) Aren't you forgetting something? NOG Keep it. Consider it a token of my appreciation. And Nog EXITS, leaving a puzzled and slightly suspicious Sisko behind. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/28/94 - ACT ONE 9. 7 EXT. SPACE - THE MEKONG (OPTICAL) at warp. 8 INT. MEKONG (VPB) Kira and Odo continue their pursuit of the Maquis interceptor. There's a graphic representing the fleeing ship on one of the monitors. KIRA I don't know what the Maquis have done to that ship's engines, but it's fast. ODO Not fast enough. We're closing on him. KIRA We'd better catch him soon. We're entering the Badlands. ODO Clever. He probably knows this territory a lot better than we do. KIRA Now aren't you glad I didn't accept that dinner invitation. If I had, we would've missed all this excitement. ODO That would've been a pity. (a beat, off monitors) Wait a minute... I've lost him. The Badlands' plasma fields are disrupting our sensors. KIRA Increase the sensor bandwidth. That should compensate for the interference. Odo follows her instructions. ODO I hope you're right. KIRA He couldn't have gotten far. He's probably somewhere in this solar system. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/28/94 - ACT ONE 9A. 8 CONTINUED: ODO (as he works) There he is. It looks like he's headed for one of the moons orbiting that gas giant. KIRA I'm following him in. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/28/94 - ACT ONE 10. 8 CONTINUED: (2) ODO Something's wrong with his ship. It looks like his attitude stabilizers have failed. KIRA (urgent) Can we get a transporter lock on him? ODO (off monitors) There's too much interference. On the monitor, the graphics show the Maquis ship moving toward a planetary surface. ODO He's trying to land on that moon. The symbol representing the Maquis ship disappears. ODO We've lost him. KIRA Did he make it? ODO I don't know. Something in the moon's atmosphere is jamming our sensors. KIRA Then I guess we'll have to land and see for ourselves. Kira begins piloting the runabout in for a landing. 9 EXT. SPACE - THE MEKONG (OPTICAL) alters course at impulse speed. TIME CUT: 10 INT. LUNAR CAVERNS Odo and Kira round a bend in the cavern. Kira is armed with a Bajoran phaser and both she and Odo carry tricorders and palm beacons. (The beacons are the only source of light). STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT ONE 11. 10 CONTINUED: ODO The tricorders are useless. The atmospheric ionization is jamming their transponders. KIRA You're sure he's in these caverns? ODO He wasn't in the wreckage of his ship. And given the weather conditions on the surface, there's no way anyone could survive out there very long. So that leaves... Suddenly, a violent tremor shakes the caverns. KIRA That's the third quake since we landed. This moon must be seismically unstable. ODO The sooner we find our fugitive, the better off we'll be. They come to a split in the cave. Two likely looking corridors branch off into the darkness. KIRA Finding him isn't going to be easy. These caverns could go on forever. And given all this seismic activity, I don't want to stay here any longer than we have to. (a beat) I say we split up. We can meet back here in twenty minutes. If we haven't found him by then, we may have to leave without him. ODO If he's smart, he'll let us find him. A Federation prison would be paradise compared to this place. KIRA Let's hope he's smart. ODO I'll see you in twenty minutes. Kira nods and she and Odo separate. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT ONE 12. 11 INT. ANOTHER PART OF THE CAVERN Time cut. Odo is searching his corridor. Suddenly his combadge chirps. The signal is full of static. Only underlined words can be heard clearly. KIRA'S COM VOICE Kira to Odo. Odo, do you hear me? ODO (to com) This is Odo. I can barely hear you. KIRA Odo, I'm trapped and I need your help. Come quickly. Odo, do you read me? This is Kira... ODO Stay where you are, Major. I'll be right there. Odo immediately heads back up the corridor in the direction he came. 12 INT. LUNAR CAVERN Odo reaches the branch in the cave. He goes down the branch that Kira took. 13 INT. CAVERN CORRIDOR Odo moves down the corridor. Kira's voice can be heard in the distance. KIRA'S VOICE Odo... Odo is that you? Odo hurries and emerges into... 14 INT. CAVERN CHAMBER Odo ENTERS a large more open chamber in the cavern. Multiple corridors lead away from the chamber deeper into the system of caves. There's also a large amount of rubble in the cave, the result of the high level of seismic activity. ODO I'm right here, Major. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/18/94 - ACT ONE 13. 15 NEW ANGLE Kira is leaning against an outcropping of wall. Her beacon is in the middle of the room as if she'd dropped it and it'd rolled away. KIRA Odo, am I glad to see you. ODO What's wrong? KIRA (embarrassed) You're not going to believe this... my foot is stuck. ODO Stuck? (makes his way over to her) How? KIRA I don't know. I must've stepped into a fissure or something. I can't get it loose. ODO Let me take a look. Odo kneels down and shines his beacon on Kira's foot. 16 CLOSE ON KIRA'S FOOT (OPTICAL) In the beacon light, we can see that Kira's foot has been encased in some kind of crystalline formation. The crystals sparkle in the beacon light. As Odo watches, the crystal spreads, almost imperceptibly, up to Kira's ankle. 17 CLOSE ON ODO As he reacts to this strange sight. ODO It's not a fissure. KIRA Then what is it? ODO Your foot's been encased in some kind of crystal. And from the look of things... STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT ONE 14. 17 CONTINUED: ODO (he looks up at Kira) The crystal's spreading. 18 CLOSE ON KIRA As she reacts to her bizarre situation. Hold on her expression for a beat, then... FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT TWO 15. ACT TWO FADE IN: 19 INT. CAVERN CHAMBER - CONTINUOUS As before. Kira is still trapped and the crystal formation has encased her foot. There's another minor tremor. ODO You're sure you can't pull it loose? KIRA (still tugging at it) Believe me, I've tried. ODO Maybe if you slipped your foot out of your boot. KIRA I can barely feel my foot, the crystal is pressing against it so hard. There's no way I can get my boot off. Odo considers the situation for a beat, then... ODO Hold on. Odo goes and picks up a large chunk of rock that's been shaken loose by one of the tremors. ODO This might hurt a little. KIRA Go ahead. Odo uses the rock to hammer on the crystal formation. After a couple of medium hard blows, which have no effect, Odo hauls off and really smashes the crystal. The rock he's using as a bludgeon cracks and shatters in his hand. Kira can't help herself; she shakes her head and chuckles. ODO I fail to see the humor in this situation. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT TWO 16. 19 CONTINUED: KIRA Oh come on, Odo. You have to admit, it's pretty ridiculous. (joking) The two of us outsmarted by a chunk of crystal. Odo is not nearly as amused by the situation as Kira. ODO I'm not giving up just yet. Kira thinks about it for a beat, then... KIRA Neither am I. Hand me my phaser. Odo looks around. KIRA It's over there. By the palm beacon. Odo dutifully retrieves the phaser, but he's not enthusiastic about Kira's solution. ODO You're sure this is a good idea? If you're not careful... KIRA I'll blow my foot off and Julian will have a chance to prove what a wonderful doctor he is. (smiles) Don't worry, I have no intention of giving him the opportunity. Now stand back. Kira adjusts the setting on her Bajoran phaser. 20 CLOSE ON KIRA'S LEG (OPTICAL) As Kira fires the phaser at the crystal formation. The crystal is bathed in energy from the phaser, but instead of shattering, it grows, rapidly spreading until it reaches a point just above Kira's knee. 21 NEW ANGLE As Kira and Odo react to this latest development. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT TWO 17. 21 CONTINUED: KIRA I guess that wasn't a very good idea after all. ODO (examining the crystal) The crystal formation seems to have somehow fed off the energy from the phaser. Suddenly, the cavern is rocked by another tremor, this one severe. After the tremor subsides, Odo looks around at the cavern with concern. Odo hits his combadge. ODO (to com) Odo to Mekong. Two to beam out. Energize. There's a long pause with no answer. ODO (to com) Odo to Mekong. (gives up, to Kira) I can't contact the runabout. There's too much interference. I'll have to walk back to the landing site and try to transport you from there. But Odo hesitates. KIRA You're worried about leaving me here? ODO Now that you mention it, yes. KIRA I'll be fine, Odo. (smiles) I promise not to go anywhere. ODO What about our Maquis fugitive? Kira holds up her phaser. KIRA If he shows up, I'll make sure he waits here until you get back. Odo nods and leaves. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT TWO 18. 22 ANGLE ON KIRA Alone in the cavern. 23 INT. QUARK'S Quark's is closed. ROM and Nog are working on the replicator. ROM Nog, hand me that phase matrix recalibrator. Nog dutifully searches for the right tool. NOG Here you are, Father. QUARK hurries over, nervously inspecting the work. QUARK Is it fixed yet? ROM Not yet, Brother. QUARK What's taking so long? NOG We're working as fast as we can. The replicators' entire power supply grid has been shorted out. ROM (to Quark) I told you, Brother, if you don't shut down your replicators at least once a week for routine maintenance, you risk system overloads like this one. QUARK You said it "might" overload the system. "Might." NOG (gently) He tried to warn you, Uncle Quark. You should've listened to him. Quark looks like he's about to explode, but Rom jumps in. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT TWO 19. 23 CONTINUED: ROM No. It's my fault. I should have explained it better. QUARK Of course it's your fault. Everything that goes wrong here is your fault. It says so in your contract. (a beat) This mess better be cleaned up before lunchtime or I'm taking the losses out of your pay. Quark storms off. ROM Of course, Brother. 24 NEW ANGLE On Rom and Nog, now alone in the bar. Rom studies the replicators for a beat, the wipes off his hands. ROM I need to get a replacement power coupling from the storeroom. I'll be right back. Rom EXITS up the stairs. Nog continues to poke around inside the workings of the replicator. After a beat, JAKE ENTERS the bar, looks around, and sees Nog. He joins him. JAKE Hey, Nog. What's going on? NOG If you're here to order lunch, you'll have to come back in an hour. JAKE Actually, I just ate. (a beat) Hey, that was a pretty funny joke you pulled on my Dad this morning. (off Nog's questioning look) You know, about wanting to join Starfleet. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT TWO 20. 24 CONTINUED: NOG I wasn't joking. JAKE (smiles) Come on, Nog. You don't really expect me to fall for that one. NOG (anxious) Did you tell your father I was joking? JAKE Yeah, kind of. NOG How could you do that to me? I want you to go back to your father and tell him that you were wrong. JAKE All right. Take it easy. I mean how was I supposed to know you were serious? You never said you wanted to join Starfleet before. NOG I'm saying it now. JAKE So what brought this on? NOG I have my reasons. JAKE Okay. Name one. NOG Why should I? JAKE Cause I'm your friend. And friends don't have secrets from one another. NOG It isn't a secret. I just don't want to talk about it. JAKE Why not? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/21/94 - ACT TWO 21. 24 CONTINUED: (2) NOG Because it's personal. Now stop asking me. JAKE All right. But my father's a pretty smart guy. If this is some kind of trick, he's going to figure it out. NOG There's nothing to figure out. I'm going to join Starfleet. And that's that. (looks back at the replicator) Now if you don't mind, I have work to do. Nog resumes working on the replicator. Jake looks at him for a beat, not sure what to make of his friend's newfound conviction, then gives up and EXITS. Nog turns and watches Jake go, a look of determination on his face. 25 EXT. MOON (MATTE) Establishing shot of the runabout on the surface of a windswept moon. 26 INT. MEKONG Odo has just sat down at the controls. The sound of a hard, fierce wind can be heard outside the runabout. He finishes inputting a series of coordinates. ODO Computer, lock onto these coordinates and initiate transport sequence. COMPUTER VOICE Unable to comply. ODO Explain. COMPUTER VOICE The high level of atmospheric ionization is inhibiting transporter lock. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT TWO 22. 26 CONTINUED: ODO Can you compensate for the interference by using pattern enhancers? COMPUTER VOICE Negative. Pattern enhancers will not function in a polarized ionization field. ODO Is there any way to achieve a transporter lock in this kind of ionization field? COMPUTER VOICE Negative. Odo looks at the control panel in frustration. ODO Computer, send out a priority one distress signal to Deep Space Nine. COMPUTER VOICE Unable to comply. Communications systems are inoperable due to atmospheric interference. ODO (not giving up) In that case, launch a communications probe and instruct it to begin a continuous broadcast of our whereabouts as soon as it clears the atmosphere. COMPUTER VOICE Working. After a beat, there's the SOUND of the probe launching and a small ship shake. COMPUTER VOICE Probe launch confirmed. ODO Computer, given ideal conditions, how soon can we expect help from Deep Space Nine? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/21/94 - ACT TWO 22A. 26 CONTINUED: (2) COMPUTER VOICE Deep Space Nine should receive the probe's distress signal in approximately two days. Odo slumps back in his chair, defeated. CUT TO: 27 INT. CAVERN CORRIDOR Odo's on his way to rejoin when he hears the SOUND of phaser fire. He rushes down the corridor. 28 INT. CAVERN CHAMBER Odo rushes into the central chamber to find Kira, safe and sound, but with both legs entirely covered in crystal. ODO (relieved) Kira... I heard phaser fire. KIRA You just missed our friend. He came out of that tunnel. (she points) I think he was as surprised as I was. He fired at me from over there, but when I shot back he ran off down the tunnel. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT TWO 23. 28 CONTINUED: Odo looks around and sees phaser scars across one of the rocks behind Kira. KIRA Don't worry, his aim wasn't any better than mine was. Odo checks the phaser scars. ODO He didn't miss by much. KIRA (false bravado) This must be my lucky day. 29 CLOSE ON ODO As he looks from the phaser scars to the crystal growth covering Kira's legs. She's in a lot of trouble, and Odo knows it. And as Odo tries to think of a way to get Kira out of her predicament, we... FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/18/94 - ACT THREE 24. ACT THREE FADE IN: 30 INT. PROMENADE - SECOND LEVEL Sisko and BASHIR are walking along the second level, talking about station business. SISKO I see you've put in a request to reassign Ensign Vilix'pran from Cargo Inspection. BASHIR I thought it'd be for the best. Given his condition, I don't want him coming in contact with any hazardous materials. SISKO His condition? BASHIR Ensign Vilix'pran is budding. The buds will be undergoing individuation in a little over a month. SISKO You mean... he's pregnant? BASHIR Twins. SISKO Reassignment granted. I'll have to offer the ensign my congratulations the next time I see him. BASHIR O'Brien and I are throwing him a baby shower in a couple of days. I'm sure it'd mean a lot to him if you were there. SISKO Are you getting him anything? BASHIR O'Brien's building him a hatchling pond and I've already placed an order with Garak for some baby clothes. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT THREE 25. 30 CONTINUED: SISKO Count me in. Just then... 31 NEW ANGLE Nog approaches, having spotted Sisko and Bashir from the sidewalk tables outside of Quark's. NOG (calling out) Commander Sisko. Sisko isn't exactly thrilled to have to deal with Nog, but it's unavoidable. SISKO If you'll excuse me, Doctor? BASHIR (smiles) By all means. Bashir EXITS just as Nog reaches Sisko. NOG So, Commander, have you made up your mind yet? About my letter? SISKO Not exactly. NOG What does that mean, "not exactly?" SISKO Look, Nog, I have to be honest with you, when I think of candidates for Starfleet Academy, yours is not the first name that comes to mind. NOG Why not? Because I'm a Ferengi? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT THREE 26. 31 CONTINUED: SISKO Not at all. The fact is, your reputation on this station leaves a lot to be desired. Your school grades are mediocre at best, you've had more than a few run-ins with Constable Odo... NOG Okay, I've made some mistakes. I admit that. But I can do better. Just give me a chance. And as Sisko considers Nog's heartfelt plea, we... CUT TO: 32 INT. COMMANDER'S OFFICE Sisko is sitting at his desk. DAX ENTERS. DAX You wanted to see me, Benjamin? SISKO Lieutenant, I need a complete inventory on the contents of Cargo Bay Twelve. DAX Didn't we inventory Twelve last week? SISKO I'd like it done again. DAX (no problem) All right. I'll assign a crew to it immediately. SISKO Actually, I already have someone in mind for the job. Dax is confused. She's not exactly sure where this is going. DAX Really? Who? SISKO Nog. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/18/94 - ACT THREE 27. 32 CONTINUED: DAX (surprised) Nog? SISKO He's asked for a recommendation to Starfleet Academy. DAX (even more surprised) Nog. SISKO My reaction exactly. DAX I've always thought it would be interesting to have a Ferengi in Starfleet, but Nog? SISKO I know it seems unlikely, but before I make up my mind, I want to give him a chance to prove himself. DAX Commander, there's a lot of valuable equipment in Cargo Bay Twelve. SISKO I know. DAX Maybe I'd better assign a couple of crewmembers to... assist him. Meaning she doesn't trust Nog for a second. SISKO No. I want him to do it alone. No help. No interference. And no one looking over his shoulder. Dax thinks about this for a second, then nods. She sees what he's getting at. 33 INT. CAVERN CHAMBER The crystal formation is now up to Kira's waist. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/18/94 - ACT THREE 28. 33 CONTINUED: ODO (re: the crystal) I wish I could analyze this material. KIRA Too bad our tricorders don't work. ODO Or our communicators... or the transporter. Our fugitive couldn't have picked a better place to hide. Very convenient, don't you think? KIRA You make it sound like he planned on trapping us. ODO Maybe he did. But it's not going to work. I'm going to get you out of here. But Kira doesn't share Odo's confidence. KIRA How much longer do you think I have, Odo? ODO Long enough. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/21/94 - ACT THREE 28A. 33 CONTINUED: (2) KIRA I figure if the crystal keeps growing at its current rate, it'll cover me completely in less than twelve hours. Just then, there's a severe tremor, the worst one they've experienced until now. The quake is prolonged and violent, and triggers a small avalanche of debris from the ceiling of the chamber. KIRA Unless this cave collapses first. ODO (his frustration leaking through) There has to be a way to shatter the crystal. KIRA I'm sure there is. But that doesn't mean that we're going to find it in the next twelve hours. ODO We'll find it. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT THREE 29. 33 CONTINUED: (3) KIRA Odo, maybe you should go back to Deep Space Nine. ODO We're too far away. Even if they sent a rescue team right now, they'd never make it here in time. KIRA Maybe not, but there's no point in both of us being buried here. ODO You mean you want me to leave? KIRA You've done all you can. ODO Major, I haven't even begun yet. KIRA (with a smile) Oh, I see. So everything you've done up until now has only been... a warmup exercise. He studies the rock. ODO (trying to raise her spirits) Exactly. I've just been lulling this crystal into a false sense of security. KIRA I think it's working. Odo gets an idea. ODO Major, do you ever look at the Criminal Activity Reports we get from Starfleet Security? Kira's a little thrown off by this non sequitur. KIRA Not often. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT THREE 30. 33 CONTINUED: (4) ODO You should. They make fascinating reading. A few months ago we got a report on a theft on Remmil Six. It seems the natives spin a kind of crystalline webbing that they use to construct their buildings. A band of Nausicaan raiders broke into their central museum by using a high frequency ultrasonic generator to create a sympathetic vibration in the webbing and shatter it. KIRA (joking) So all we have to do is find some Nausicaan raiders and ask them to give us a hand. ODO I might be able to put together a makeshift generator using the covariant oscillator from the runabout. The trick will be finding the right frequency to create a sympathetic vibration inside this crystal. (a beat) I'll have to go back to the runabout and start assembling the generator. Keep your phaser ready in case our friend comes back. KIRA I will. ODO I'll be back as soon as I can. He turns to go. KIRA (calls after him) Constable. (as he turns) When we get back to the station, I'm going to start reading those Criminal Activity Reports. ODO I'll make sure you get them. They share a brief smile, and Odo EXITS. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/18/94 - ACT THREE 31. 34 INT. CARGO BAY TWELVE Dax is showing Nog around this crowded cargo bay. She's carrying a PADD. DAX Due to a computer error, we lost the manifest on this entire cargo bay. Commander Sisko would like you to re- inventory the contents. NOG Of the entire cargo bay? DAX That's right. NOG By myself? DAX Look Nog, Starfleet isn't only about exploration and diplomacy. A lot of the time, it's just hard work. NOG When does Commander Sisko want it done? DAX He'd like the manifest on his desk first thing tomorrow morning. Nog looks around, then draws himself up to his full height. He's determined to make a good impression. NOG He'll have it tonight, before he goes off duty. DAX (humoring him) Tomorrow morning will be fine. NOG Now if you don't mind, Lieutenant, I'd like to get started. She smiles and gives him the PADD, then EXITS, leaving Nog alone with several tons of valuable Starfleet hardware. 35 CLOSE ON NOG Looking around the cargo bay and smiling. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/18/94 - ACT THREE 32. 36 INT. CAVERN CHAMBER Odo's brought in more lights from the runabout. The cave is significantly brighter. He's busy putting the final touches on an ultrasonic generator using equipment salvaged from the runabout. Suddenly we hear a groan. Odo looks up to see... 37 ANGLE ON KIRA The crystal formation has now grown to cover Kira's rib cage. ODO (concerned) What's wrong? KIRA (trying to be light) It's getting a little snug in here, that's all. She's having trouble breathing, which becomes obvious when she tries to talk. This condition will continue and worsen through the rest of the show as the crystal formation inches upward, making it more and more difficult to inhale. KIRA How long do you think it'll take the generator to find the right frequency? Odo is hesitant to tell her, but knows she deserves the truth. ODO It's hard to say. It could take hours. KIRA I don't suppose there's any way to speed things up? Odo's expression says it all. KIRA I didn't think so. Odo activates the machinery. ODO Don't worry, Major. I have every intention of getting us back to the station by tomorrow night. Chief O'Brien is counting on it. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/21/94 - ACT THREE 32A. 37 CONTINUED: KIRA What does O'Brien have to do with it? ODO (doesn't want to get into it) We have... an appointment. KIRA What kind of appointment? Odo doesn't answer. KIRA Talk to me, Odo. It'll help pass the time. ODO The Chief and I are supposed to go kayaking together... in a holosuite. KIRA You're kidding. How did he talk you into that? ODO He didn't talk me into anything. (a beat) It's really quite enjoyable. KIRA You mean you've done it before? ODO Twice. He invited me one evening and, seeing I had no other plans, I accepted. KIRA I'm sorry. I'm just having a little trouble picturing you and O'Brien together in a boat. ODO Well if it helps any, he's the one who does all the singing. KIRA He sings? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT THREE 32B. 37 CONTINUED: (2) ODO He says it's necessary to establish a smooth paddling rhythm. KIRA This gets better and better. (a beat) What kind of songs does he sing? ODO Ancient human sea chanties, mostly. He's particularly fond of one called "Louie, Louie." KIRA I never knew O'Brien was so... nautical. ODO Next to his work and his family, "shooting the rapids" is his favorite activity. He's had the holo-program since he was on the Enterprise. KIRA So how long do these boat trips usually take? ODO That depends. KIRA On what? ODO On how many times we capsize. (a beat) The truth is, Major, Chief O'Brien's never completed the entire program. KIRA Not once? ODO Not in seven years of trying. KIRA It must be a very difficult program. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT THREE 33. 37 CONTINUED: (3) ODO Extremely difficult. According to him, he's dislocated his shoulder a half dozen times trying to make it down those rapids. KIRA Then why does he keep doing it? ODO Because he loves it. And it's been my observation that you humanoids have a hard time giving up the things you love... no matter how much they might hurt you. There's a beat as Odo looks at Kira. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT THREE 34. 37 CONTINUED: (4) ODO I should check the equipment. KIRA The equipment's fine. (a beat) I'm glad you're here, Odo. ODO (heartfelt) I'm glad I'm here, too. Just then, there's a powerful tremor, even worse than the last one. 38 CLOSE ON KIRA As she reacts to the violent quake. There's a loud cracking sound. Kira looks up in alarm. KIRA (alarmed, reacting to what she sees) Odo... And as rubble begins to rain down on them, we... FADE OUT. END OF ACT THREE STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/21/94 - ACT FOUR 35. ACT FOUR FADE IN: 39 INT. CAVERN CHAMBER - CLOSE ON KIRA Who's raised her arms over her head to protect herself from the falling debris. But, to her surprise, the amount of rubble falling from the roof slows to a trickle, then stops altogether. She looks up and sees... 40 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) Odo has MORPHED his body into a metal dome to shield Kira and the ultrasonic generator from the falling rubble. 41 CLOSE ON KIRA As she reacts to what Odo has done. The quake stops and we hear the sound of a morph off camera. 42 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) As Odo finishes MORPHING back into shape and looks suspiciously at the roof. ODO (concerned) Major? KIRA I'm all right. What about the generator? Odo checks. ODO It's fine. But it still hasn't found the right frequency to shatter the crystal. KIRA Tell it to hurry. A few more tremors like that last one and this whole cave will collapse. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FOUR 36. 42 CONTINUED: ODO Then we'll have to make sure we're not here when that happens. After all, we've been in worse situations than this one and come out all right. Odo tries to look confident for Kira, but he's pretty worried. KIRA Name three. This throws Odo off a little. KIRA I can't think of any either. ODO It's not that. It's just... That wasn't the response I expected. KIRA What do you mean? ODO In the detective novels Chief O'Brien gives me to read, when the hero says, "We've been in tougher scrapes than this one," his friends always agree. KIRA I never read any of those books. ODO There must be some humanoid platitude I can use to cheer you up. KIRA I'm afraid I don't have much use for platitudes, Odo. I'd rather just face the truth about a situation and go on from there. ODO I feel the same way. KIRA I know. That's why you and I get along so well. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FOUR 37. 42 CONTINUED: (2) ODO I suppose it is. But in this case, the truth is we are going to get you out of here, Major. And that's no platitude. Kira musters a smile at Odo's reassurance. 43 INT. REPLIMAT Sisko and Dax are eating dinner together as Sisko glances over a PADD. SISKO I have to admit, this is impressive work. DAX Incredible is more like it. He inventoried the whole cargo bay in under five hours. SISKO You're sure he didn't have any help? DAX According to the internal sensors, no one else entered that cargo bay for the entire time he was there. SISKO I guess he learned a few things working in his uncle's storeroom. (trying to put it delicately) I assume all our equipment is still... where it's supposed to be? DAX If you're asking if he stole anything, the answer is no. He even found some items we missed during our last inventory. SISKO Okay, so we know he's a hard worker, but the question remains: Why does he want to join Starfleet? DAX I have no idea. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FOUR 38. 43 CONTINUED: SISKO So we still can't be sure if he's serious or if this is all part of some elaborate scam. Before Dax can answer... 44 NEW ANGLE Quark and Rom approach Sisko. QUARK Commander, we need to talk. SISKO Go right ahead. QUARK It's about my nephew. SISKO Somehow, I'm not surprised. QUARK Rom, tell Commander Sisko what's on your mind. ROM Well, the thing is... I'm not quite sure... QUARK (interrupting) What my brother's trying to say is he's furious that you'd even consider allowing his son to attend Starfleet Academy. (to Rom) Isn't that right? ROM Well, I... QUARK (interrupting) You see. He can barely speak he's so angry. Now we... I mean, he... demands you refuse the boy's request and return his latinum immediately. SISKO Rom, is that what you want? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FOUR 39. 44 CONTINUED: ROM The thing is... we've always assumed... that is... I did promise that Nog would become... my brother's apprentice... DAX That explains things. QUARK Lieutenant, please, this is between my brother and Commander Sisko. SISKO Actually, that's not true. Your... brother's feelings aren't at issue here. According to both Federation law and Ferengi tradition, Nog is old enough to make his own decisions. ROM You see, brother, I told you. SISKO (to Quark) And as for the latinum, must I remind you of the first Rule of Acquisition? ROM (smiling) "Once you have their money, you never give it back." It's one of my brother's favorites. (to Quark) Isn't that so, Brother? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FOUR 40. 44 CONTINUED: (2) QUARK I'm not going to stand here and argue Rules of Acquisition with a human. DAX Especially one who knows them as well as you. QUARK (ignoring her, to Sisko) That apprenticeship money is rightfully mine. And I will protest your actions to the Nagus himself if I have to. SISKO Give the Nagus my best. ROM Can we leave now, brother? The two of them start to walk away. QUARK Would you stop calling me that? ROM Calling you what? QUARK "Brother." ROM But you are my brother. (a beat) Unless mother lied to us. QUARK (wistful) If only that were true. As Rom and Quark walk away down the Promenade... 45 CLOSE ON SISKO AND DAX As they exchange an amused look. DAX So I take it you are going to write Nog's letter of recommendation? SISKO I don't know. That depends on Nog. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FOUR 42. 45 CONTINUED: And off Dax's questioning look... CUT TO: 46 INT. CAVERN CHAMBER The crystal formation has reached the middle of Kira's chest. Her breathing is noticeably strained and shallow. Odo is working on the ultrasonic generator. He looks grim. ODO I don't understand it. I've run through the entire harmonic spectrum and none of the frequencies have had an effect on the crystal. It's almost as if the structure of the crystal is mutating to keep us from finding the right frequency. KIRA Odo. Odo turns to see Kira grimacing in pain. ODO Yes, Major. He hurries over to her. She grabs hold of his hand as if to fight down the pain. ODO I wish there was something else I could do... KIRA Just keep talking to me. There's a slight tremor, but it has no effect on the cave. Both Odo and Kira try to ignore it. ODO What do you want me to say? KIRA Anything. Tell me a story. You can almost see the wheels turning in Odo's mind as he tries to come up with something to talk about. ODO A story? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FOUR 42. 46 CONTINUED: KIRA I know. Tell me how you got your name. ODO My name? Come to think of it, that is an amusing story. KIRA Tell it to me. ODO Well, as you know, when Doctor Mora first brought me to his laboratory, it was under Cardassian supervision. All specimens had to be clearly labeled in Cardassian, so that the overseers would always know what the scientists were working on. Since no one could decide exactly what I was, Mora labelled me "Unknown Sample," which the overseer translated into Cardassian as "Odo'ital." KIRA So your name is "Unknown Sample?" ODO No. "Odo'ital" literally means "Nothing." Even after it became clear that I was sentient, the Bajoran scientists kept calling me that. As a joke, they split it into two words, like a Bajoran name: "Odo Ital." Which eventually got shortened... KIRA To Odo. There's yet another tremor, this one strong enough to knock some dirt from the ceiling. ODO (nods) But the thing is, for the longest time, when anyone spoke my name, the first thing I'd think of was what it meant: "Nothing." What better way to describe me? I had no family, no friends, no place where I belonged. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FOUR 42A. 46 CONTINUED: (2) ODO I thought it was the most appropriate name anyone could give me. (a beat) And then I met you... STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FOUR 43. 46 CONTINUED: (3) ODO (Cont'd) (covering) And the others. Sisko, Dax, even Quark. And now, when I hear one of you call me "Odo," I no longer think of myself as "Nothing." I think of myself as... me. There's a pause as Kira and Odo both ponder the meaning of Odo's story. ODO (with a wry smile) I'm sorry, Major. I guess that story wasn't as amusing as I'd hoped it would be. KIRA No. I liked it very much. There's another awkward silence, then... KIRA (softly) The ultrasonic generator isn't going to work, is it? ODO No, I'm afraid it's not. KIRA I don't suppose you have any other ideas. ODO I wish I had. KIRA If it makes you feel better, I don't have any either. ODO It just doesn't make sense. The ultrasonic generator should have worked. Something's not right here. KIRA Odo, you've done your best. Now I think it's time for you to go. ODO Go? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - REV. 11/18/94 - ACT FOUR 44. 46 CONTINUED: (4) KIRA This place could collapse at any minute. That Maquis has probably been killed already by one of the cave-ins. There's nothing more you can do for me. ODO If you're asking me to leave... KIRA No. I know you wouldn't listen to me. ODO You're right about that. KIRA So as your superior officer, I'm telling you to take the runabout and get the hell off this moon. (a beat) That's an order. 47 CLOSE ON ODO As he weighs his options. FADE OUT. END OF ACT FOUR STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 45. ACT FIVE FADE IN: 48 INT. CAVERN CHAMBER - CONTINUOUS As before. Odo makes no move to leave. KIRA Odo, what are you standing there for? I told you to get out of here. ODO I'm not leaving. KIRA Constable, I gave you a direct order. ODO You can order me all you want. As of now, I'm resigning my commission. KIRA Odo, if you stay here, you'll die. ODO You don't know that for certain. And even if it were true, I'm not going to abandon you. There's another quake, a fairly strong one. KIRA But I want you to go. Odo looks tortured. ODO Don't you understand? I can't. KIRA You have to. Odo doesn't say anything. KIRA Please, Odo. There's another quake. ODO No. I won't leave you. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 46. 48 CONTINUED: KIRA Why not? ODO (angry) Because... (a beat, defeated) Because, I'm in love with you. 49 CLOSE ON KIRA As she reacts in utter surprise by this revelation. 50 CLOSE ON ODO Who's just said the hardest thing he's ever had to say. Odo slumps down against a wall of the cavern, ashamed, exhausted, and heartbroken. He can't even look at her. ODO So now you know. 51 INCLUDE KIRA As she studies Odo for a long beat, then... KIRA Odo... The mere sound of her voice makes Odo lower his head even more. KIRA I'm in love with you, too. And as Odo looks up at Kira in shock and surprise, we... CUT TO: 52 INT. COMMANDER'S OFFICE Nog ENTERS to find Sisko waiting for him. NOG (eager to please) You wanted to see me, Commander? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 47. 52 CONTINUED: SISKO Nog I've given your request a lot of thought. NOG I appreciate that, Commander. SISKO But I'm afraid I have to turn you down. This is not what Nog expected. NOG Turn me down? Why? Did I do something wrong? SISKO It's not anything you did, Nog. You're just not Academy material. Sisko places Nog's latinum on his desk. SISKO Here. This belongs to you. Nog doesn't reach for the latinum. NOG Commander, can't we talk about this? SISKO There's nothing to talk about. We both know you'd never make it through the Academy. You couldn't handle the workload or the discipline. You wouldn't last two weeks. NOG (desperate) That's not true. I'm a hard worker. I proved that to you. SISKO It doesn't matter. I'm not going to place my reputation on the line just to satisfy some whim of yours. Nog, who until now has been on the defensive, begins to get angry. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 48. 52 CONTINUED: (2) NOG It's not just a whim. I'm serious about joining Starfleet. SISKO I don't have time for this, Nog. Whatever little scheme you had, you can forget it. You're not getting that letter. NOG It's not a joke... or a scheme. I want to join Starfleet. I want it more than I've ever wanted anything in my life. Sisko gets in Nog's face. He towers over the Ferengi. SISKO You're a Ferengi. Why would you want to be in Starfleet? Where's the profit in it? NOG I don't care about profit. SISKO (really pushing) Then what do you care about? Come on, Nog, tell me. Why is it so damned important for you to get into Starfleet? Why are you doing this? Nog is angry, flustered, and desperate. NOG (finally blurts out the truth) Because I don't want to end up like my father. Sisko calms down. He was only acting angry to push Nog to reveal his reasons for wanting to join Starfleet. SISKO Your father. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 49. 52 CONTINUED: (3) NOG That's right. My father. He's been chasing after profit his whole life. And what has it gotten him? Nothing. And you know why? Because he doesn't have the lobes. (a beat) And neither do I. SISKO (quoting) And "A Ferengi without profit... " NOG (finishing) "... Is no Ferengi at all." SISKO The eighteenth Rule of Acquisition. NOG (nods) My father's a mechanical genius. He could've been the chief engineer of a starship if he'd had the opportunity. But he went into business instead, like a good Ferengi. The only thing is, he's not a good Ferengi... not when it comes to acquiring profit. So now all he has to live for is the slim chance that someday, somehow, he might be able to take over my uncle's bar. Well I'm not going to make the same mistake. I want to do something with my life... something worthwhile. SISKO Like joining Starfleet. NOG I might not have an instinct for business, but I've got my father's hands and my uncle's tenacity. I know I've got something to offer, I just need a chance to prove it. Sisko studies Nog for a long beat. SISKO All right. I'll see to it you get that chance. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 49A. 52 CONTINUED: (4) NOG (can't believe it) You'll recommend me to Starfleet Academy? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 50. 52 CONTINUED: (5) SISKO I'll send the letter first thing tomorrow morning. Nog is overwhelmed. NOG Commander, I don't know how to thank you. SISKO Don't thank me yet. You've got a lot of work ahead of you. NOG Don't worry. You'll never regret this. Sisko smiles, not entirely sure Nog is right, but willing to take that chance. 53 INT. CAVERN CHAMBER Kira is now covered up to her neck. Her arms have also been immobilized by the crystal. Odo is studying the phaser hits from Kira's gunfight with the Maquis. He's not in Kira's restricted range of vision. KIRA Odo? ODO Yes, Major. KIRA You haven't said a word in almost an hour. Odo seems troubled. Something's been eating at him for a while now and he's beginning to come to some unpleasant conclusions. ODO I've just been going over a few things in my mind. KIRA You've been thinking about me, haven't you? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 51. 53 CONTINUED: KIRA (Cont'd) (off his reaction) I'm sorry that it took so long for me to tell you how I feel about you. Maybe if I'd told you earlier, things would've been different. A long pause. Odo is now looking across the room, from the phaser hits to the corridor and back again, as if tracing out the trajectories in his mind. Odo smiles a bitter smile. KIRA What are you smiling about? ODO (still looking at the phaser hits) I think I've finally figured out what's going on here. This whole situation hasn't seemed right since the beginning. There've been too many coincidences, too many unanswered questions. KIRA Are you still trying to prove this is some kind of conspiracy? Instead of answering, Odo walks over to the entranceway of one of the side tunnels. ODO You said the Maquis was standing about here when he fired at you? KIRA That's right. ODO How tall was he? My height? KIRA No. Maybe a little shorter. Odo scrunches down a little bit. ODO Like this? KIRA More or less. Why does it matter anyway? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 52. 53 CONTINUED: (2) ODO It matters because from this position, you're blocking those phaser hits. Odo indicates the phaser burns Kira attributed to the Maquis. ODO (continues) There's no way someone standing here could've hit those rocks without hitting you first. KIRA Maybe he was standing somewhere else. ODO Maybe. Or maybe you were lying to me. Which makes two times you've lied to me today. KIRA What are you talking about? STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 53. 53 CONTINUED: (3) ODO You lied when you said you were shot at by the Maquis. And you lied when you said you loved me. KIRA But I do love you. ODO I wish you did. But you don't. (a beat) Remember Major, I pride myself on my ability to observe human nature. And I've watched you for the past three years. In all that time, I never saw the slightest indication that you had those kinds of feelings for me. You like me. You think of me as a close friend... but love? I'm afraid not. There's a long beat as Kira wrestles with how to reply. KIRA Maybe I said I loved you because I thought it'd make you feel better. Because I thought it was what you wanted to hear. ODO You're lying again. The Kira I know values our friendship far too much to lie to me, even for the best of reasons. KIRA Odo... I can explain... The cavern is hit by another tremor. Odo picks up Kira's Bajoran phaser and aims it at her. ODO Good. You can start by telling me who you are and what you've done with Kira. There's a long beat, and then Kira smiles. 54 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) As Kira and her crystalline prison both MORPH into the FEMALE CHANGELING we met in "THE SEARCH." STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 54. 54 CONTINUED: FEMALE CHANGELING Well done, Odo. You really are quite a skillful investigator. ODO And you're quite a skillful changeling. FEMALE CHANGELING You still have much to learn. ODO If you want to share your wisdom with me, you can start by telling me where Major Kira is. FEMALE CHANGELING Close by. ODO You were the fugitive we were chasing, weren't you? FEMALE CHANGELING That's correct. ODO How'd you get your hands on a Maquis ship? FEMALE CHANGELING Now, Odo, you can't expect me to give you all the answers. ODO But why did you lead us here? And why replace Kira? The ground shakes again. FEMALE CHANGELING I needed to understand why you chose to live with the Solids rather than your own people. I suspected it had something to do with Major Kira. (a beat) And now I'm certain of it. ODO So your plan was to let me think she died. You thought that would take away my link to the Solids. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 55. 54 CONTINUED: (2) FEMALE CHANGELING And then you would return to us. ODO I assure you, nothing will ever make me do that. FEMALE CHANGELING I wouldn't be so sure. ODO (still aiming the phaser) Tell me where she is. FEMALE CHANGELING And if I don't, then what? You'll shoot me? (smiles) No changeling has ever harmed another. ODO There's a first time for everything. The Female Changeling studies Odo for a beat, then comes to a decision. FEMALE CHANGELING (points) Major Kira is down that tunnel, two hundred meters south of here. Save her if it suits you. (pointedly) But it won't make any difference. She's never going to love you. How could she? You're a changeling. And with that... 55 ANGLE ON THE FEMALE CHANGELING (OPTICAL) The Female Changeling disappears in a Dominion Transporter beam. 56 CLOSE ON ODO As he reacts to her beam out. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 55A. 57 INT. SIDE CORRIDOR A tremor shakes the caverns. It's one of the most violent ones yet. Odo bends down into frame and pulls the cover off a coffin-like containment chamber. Kira is inside. ODO (urgent) Major. Wake up. KIRA (groggy) Odo, what happened? How did I get here... The tremor continues. ODO It's a long story. Right now we have to get you to the Mekong. And as Odo helps Kira up and the two of them retreat down the quaking corridor... CUT TO: STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 56. 58 EXT. DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Re-establishing. 59 INT. PROMENADE As Odo and Kira step out of the airlock. KIRA There's one thing I still don't understand. If that Founder wanted to test your allegiance to the Solids, why did she impersonate me? There's a long beat as Odo searches for an answer. ODO I suppose it's because you happened to be with me in the runabout. It could just as easily have been Commander Sisko... or Doctor Bashir. KIRA So what finally made you realize the truth? ODO Eventually she made a mistake. She said something I know you would never say. KIRA And what was that? ODO Just a slip of the tongue. Nothing important. And as they pass out of frame, the camera moves into... 60 INT. QUARK'S Where Quark is railing against the injustice of Sisko's decision while Rom and Nog continue work at the bar. QUARK I tell you, I won't stand for it. No nephew of mine is going to disgrace our family name by joining Starfleet. NOG But Uncle Quark... STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 56A. 60 CONTINUED: QUARK My mind is made up. I forbid it. Suddenly Rom decides he's had enough of this. ROM No you don't. STAR TREK: "Heart of Stone" - 11/17/94 - ACT FIVE 57. 60 CONTINUED: (2) QUARK Rom, stay out of this. ROM I will not.
