Blackened redfish was a Creole dish. It was once prepared and served at a banquet by Benjamin Sisko for his senior staff. Sisko, as with many recipes, learned this one from his father's restaurant in New Orleans.

Benjamin Sisko insisted that beets were a "misunderstood vegetable" and that anyone who didn't like them simply hadn't eaten any that were properly prepared.

Yolad Belar was a Trill male, brother to Joran Belar. Yolad was a musician who graduated from the same music academy as Joran in the late 23rd century.

Benzocyatizine is type of medication used to treat low serum isoboramine levels in Trill patients. In 2371, Jadzia Dax's isoboramine level began to decline when the Dax symbiont experienced flashbacks of a previous host, Joran Belar, as a result of the failure of a memory block. To compensate (and in an attempt to hide the truth regarding Trill symbionts), Doctor Renhol put Jadzia Dax on a regimen of benzocyatizine. This treatment, however, did not work.

The Caves of Mak'ala were a series of interconnecting underground caves on the Trill homeworld. Deep within these caves were kilometers of interconnecting pools of a milk-like substance which was the natural environment of the Trill symbionts.

Isoboramine (also spelled as isoboromine) is a neurotransmitter in Trill physiology which regulated the connections between the host and the symbiont. Low isoboramine levels were harmful and could be fatal to the host and/or symbiont, so if isoboramine levels dropped below 40%, then the symbiont was removed.

Sisko told a nurse on Trill to tell Doctor Torvin to get himself a raktajino - as opposed to preparing a new host for the Dax symbiont - just before confronting Doctor Renhol.

The Symbiosis Commission is the Trill organization responsible for nearly all aspects of the joining of a Trill host and symbiont. The Guardians work for the Commission and care for the symbionts before they are joined in the Caves of Mak'ala.

Torvin was a Trill doctor living on the planet Trill in 2371. When Jadzia Dax returned to Trill in that year to find out the cause of her strange hallucinations and she was having major difficulties, Doctor Renhol asked for Doctor Torvin to prepare a new host for surgery.

On average, only 300 symbionts are available for hosting each year. Because there are many more humanoid Trill than symbionts, prospective hosts are weeded out by a demanding selection procedure, overseen by the Symbiosis Commission.

Common belief in Trill society holds that only one in 1,000 Trill make acceptable hosts. In fact, this figure is vastly understated, and nearly half of the Trill population is capable of being joined. The myth is perpetuated very carefully, though, in order to avoid the widespread chaos which would arise if the information were made public, since the symbionts would become, essentially, objects to be fought over, as people fought to gain the few prized symbionts.

Sisko is from New Orleans.
