Paul Dooley made his first appearance as Enabran Tain in this episode. He later reprised the role in "Improbable Cause", "The Die is Cast", and "In Purgatory's Shadow".

When Tain first meets Bashir, he calls the doctor Julian Subatoi Bashir, the first and only mention of Bashir's middle name in the series.

This also marks the first appearance of the Obsidian Order.

Algorian mammoth is a large animal. After Elim Garak told Dr. Bashir, he administered to himself a dosage of thirty cc's of triptacederine, the alarmed doctor told him that that was enough to anesthetize an Algorian mammoth.

The Arawath colony is a Cardassian settlement. Enabran Tain moved here after his retirement from the Obsidian Order.

The Cardassian Mechanized Infantry is a division of the Cardassian Central Command charged (presumably) with ground operations. At one point in time Elim Garak was supposedly a Gul in the Cardassian Mechanized Infantry but given Garak's shady history, there is no way to be sure of his claim.

The Galipotans are a spacefaring race that conducted trade in the Alpha Quadrant during the late 24th century. The Galipotan culture is known for refusing to acknowledge the concept of time, however, according to Elim Garak, "they make magnificent sweaters."

Hartla was a dabo girl at Quark's Bar on Terok Nor during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. She was still working there as of 2370. One of her special clients was a Cardassian officer named Boheeka.

After he had nearly died, Garak asked Bashir how the I'danian spice pudding was today.

Ledonia III is a planet, home to an exotic plant. Ledonian soil contains a benevolent mycorrhizal fungus that helps the native plants retain water. When the plantlife is deprived of this soil, it will quickly die.

Meditations on a Crimson Shadow is a Cardassian novel by Preloc. It takes place in the future, when the Cardassians are at war with the Klingons. The Cardassians emerge victorious. Elim Garak recommended the book to Julian Bashir in 2370.

Quark claimed that Elim Garak had a sizing scanner from Merak II.

The Never Ending Sacrifice is a Cardassian novel, which Elim Garak thought was the "finest Cardassian novel ever written." Archetypical of the repetitive epic genre of Cardassian literature, The Never Ending Sacrifice describes seven generations of a Cardassian family, all of whom live selfless lives of devotion to the state.

Nillimite was a material known by the 24th century. In 2370, Doctor Bashir offered to tell Enabran Tain his opinion about new tennis rackets made out of nillimite alloy.

Red leaf tea is a Cardassian hot beverage, a tea with a garnet-red color and a rather sweet and spicy taste. It was Elim Garak's favorite breakfast beverage.

Rigel IV hosts a nearly week-long conference on hydroponics attended by Keiko O'Brien.

When trying to distract Doctor Bashir from his dealings with Garak in 2370, Quark asked Bashir if he wanted "a little Saurian Brandy to go or maybe a late-night in a holosuite."

Julian Bashir often enjoyed Tarkalean tea, usually preferring it "extra sweet".

Triptacederine is an analgesic medication. Elim Garak used 30 cc of triptacederine to alleviate the pain caused by his cranial implant.
